GPS-server tracking - General Questions and Answers

Hello Guys,
i have plans to buy software app for android for my company needs, including vehicles and phones.
Searching for likely any advice/recommendation from others maybe using GPS-server.net services for tracking vehicles etc. or any other valuable information.
Thank you in advance,
Robert

Hail guys again,
after some little research found i can tell it is not so easy.
Some of the programs charge you in addition for every option you are willing to include on your tracker,
while other include lots of option for one time payment.
currently looking into:
GPS tracker WP
and waze
any opinion/experience on that ones?

Use this app for GPS Tracking (Free): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fsp.android.c
And use Waze in the same time. Nothing compliceted here.
If this is not what you are looking for, please be more specific.

Interesting, thanks for an answer.
I am looking for best all-rounder not necessarily Phone tracker or Traffic GPS tracker. However it could be an option app-wise in it self.
Obviously the priority is for an app where you can configure more or less in a sense to optimize need/performance and battery life.
After all there are few on top, well advertised programs with massive download figures, but are they any good or so much more better in general comparing them with newer or not so continent wise popular ones like GPS Tracker WP or any else as i can find truly hundreds of them.
And the problem appears to be the choice.
Generally, why should any "wrong" or "bad" app be put in google store? or i am wrong in something i do not get.

GPS Innvoation / My Thesis about Community Based Innovation

hello xda-dev community!
first of all... this is the one of the most amazing communities i have ever seen! this site and its members helped solving a lot of my problems and improved my mobile experience. thx!
as a business administration student in german i am actually writing my thesis about community based innovations
i asked my prof if i can bring in a practical example on how innovations and product improvements were created by community members and i want to use the xda community as a "real life example" how to generate product innovations for needs of consumers which were not recognized by manufacturers in a "co-creative innovation process"... means that i really would like get your ideas on this subject!
Subject: Transmitting your GPS-coordinates via SMS - to contacts & added functions like displaying your location and creating routes on maps
there is no "commercial" software solution for this... please correct me if im wrong.
please let me know ur ideas and questions...
also there is no phone that (by default) can send your GPS coordinates as sms combined with more useful information like showing your location and the given location on the map and creating routes, showing the distance in km/miles... please add more functions YOU are missing. all im writing is just theory and i dont know if it all options are possible...
i can think of options like
- sending the coordinates in certain periods e.g every 5/20/40... minutes. interesting for hikers and let people know where you are...in case of accidents.
- this "product" can be interesting for parents.
- could this solution "imitate" navigation with static maps without standard navigation software. is there a way of synchronizing to "locations" so that each party is updated in intervals ?
- ... ?
these are the current GPS apps for reading / sending coordinates:
- LocationSMS presented @ xda by user AX3L ...works and is very simply... but just sending coordinates nothing else.
- GPS Tracking - CodeProject
...havent tested yet...sounds good!
- GPSbySMS - looks good but created an error during install. but the description says that it can display the location on maps
examples of use - add more if u like
a) you are new in town and want to meet up with a friend... but at least one of you doesnt know the place. both use a gps phone (a-gps/gps) but havent installed any navigation software like tomtom.
b) your friends already met and you are too late... they call you and try to describe their location by telling you street names / places that none of you know...
c) your wife/son/daughter is out and wants you to pick him/her up...
d) you go hiking and want to send your location as a precaution...
e) forwarding several locations to groups...
Do you think this would be interesting for YOU ?! Have you ever looked for such a function ?
EDIT: of course i need some basic facts about the community itself e.g. founders, vision, dates, members (admins, mods, senior members ?...), # threads, # of downloads .... who are the xda-dev "founders" ?
...i guess it was too much...
where are the GPS experts?
first off, good luck with your study.
secondly, i am not really sure what kind of feed back you want. i like the idea, but google has the latitude function that does something similar to what you are doing.
finally, especially in the case of a hiker, power consumption can be an issue, where a hiker would prefer to keep power to make an emergency phone call rather than continuously running the gps and eating power that will be needed later if an accident happens.
i hope what i said was something you were looking for, once more good luck
thanks a lot!
mainly i want to get ur ideas on this function to see if is useful for the majority of mobile users who have GPS but use it just for "classic" navigation...
i havent checked google latitude? is it a WM application or just a google service?
hiking is just one example... the emergency call doesnt tell authorities your exact location... means they have to locate your mobile.
is there a gps forum @ xda where i can get more feedback about this? hoped that more people would be interested in this function =(
Where can i get background infos on the xda site itself? see the edit above (in red)

google maps latitude is for windows mobile. another application that does location sharing is mologogo, i have used it, and it is very good.
in the hiking situation, i was just saying that continuously sharing your location might drain the battery, and if an emergency situation happens, you won't have a phone to call for help.
there is no dedicated GPS forum in xda, each device has its own forum, and there gps issues specific to the device are discussed. the development and hacking forum has many general gps programs.
here is some info on xda-devs, from wikipedia, i don't know about other sources:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xda-developers
the main page has some info as well:
http://www.xda-developers.com/
Great initiative.
I´ve been looking into this for quite some time. Two or three apps you would like to add to the list is:
- LocateMe http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/...-third-party-with-windows-mobile-gps-devices/
(is a trialware, 10 US bucks for a nag free license)
- RunGPS.net
More than just a send gps by sms but still usable.
- Trackme
Not as easy to use as locateme but with really nice options: http://luisespinosa.com/trackme_eng.html
It seems that the community is not so keen to develop such a tool.
I am looking for long time for a tool to send GPS-Position via SMS. I tried GPS Tracker by Phonekai and GPS Location and investigated some others. Unfortunatelly every tool is missing some essential features.
The first feature is the format of the position data. I would like to choose the position format. E.g. GPS Location uses strictly dd,dddd. I would like to use the well known geocaching format dd mm,mmm.
Further it is important to have a link to navigation software on the ppc. There should be a parser to search incoming SMS for geocoordinates and automatically convert to waypoints in OziExplorer (.wpt) or TomTom POI (.ov2) and to show these on the map.
Can someone recommend a GPS-exchange software via SMS with Ozi and/or TomTom interface ???
Regards,
Oli
@olih
nothing useful in all the apps we posted ? have u tried GLOPUS ?

I'm getting fed up with EasyMoney, any other good free/paid financial management app?

Anyone here with any recommendations? I'm kinda sick of the support from EasyMoney, and I want something better and more worthy of the money I spent on EasyMoney. I just want it to be easy to use and have a way to backup my records.
Financisto. Appbrain page
It's free (there's a donation app that doesn't add features but does support the devs, consider it if you like the app), open source and feature loaded.
Lots of account options, budgeting, places management, scheduled transactions, custom entries (awesome feature). It's really really flexible, to me it's awesome. The only thing wrong with it is the interface which I think could need an overhaul but top notch otherwise.
Edit: Btw, you can export to CSV, backup to your SD or backup to your Google Docs. Take your pick!
+1 for financisto
Been using it a long time, recommend it.
Sent from my Eris using XDA App
There is a problem with financisto, which is its reporting, it doesn't let different account reports to be viewed separately, that is, it clubs the different account reports. Other than it is better than easy money.
Give Loot a try maybe that fits your requirements.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/loot/net.gumbercules.loot
there is a premium version of it, which is free because the developer is really nice and have made it free for sometime due to christmas and all.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/loot-premium/net.gumbercules.loot.premium
Cheers
I tried some expense tracking apps and finally I stayed with Tap Money Tracker.
If you try and feel that you already seen better alternatives, just let me now so I can try them also
Thanks guys. Anyone tried out anMoney yet? I've been trying it out with Financisto, but still undecided which I like better. I do like Financisto, but it does not have a bill reminder function, or a page where I can dump bills that I should pay and the due date.
I am really in need of an analog to pocket quicken. I use quicken for my finances and need something that syncs and keeps a balance on the mobile...Has anyone seen something like this or a good workaround. Mint.com is not really an accounting program as it only deals with things that have cleared and will not sync to quicken.
Go defend America then get USAA. Hands down the best.

I would like something as powerful too.
Mint.com is what i use to track all of my finances. Its super powerful and there is a mint.com app that if very feature packed.
mint.com looks alright but yeah only US and canada right now so useless for other countries.
I use financisto, seems the best free one I could find
To the OP: You asked about AnMoney and I have been using it for a few months. I find it VERY useful for daily transactions as well as getting a handle on my personal finances. It gives me a snapshot of where my $$ is at any point in time, and it does include budget and reporting capabilities. While it would be great if those 2 features packed more options, I'm still very satisfied with the product. I forget how much it costs... but it was very reasonable IIRC. It allows transfers to/from savings/checking, loan payments, recurring entries (such as payroll or automatic debit). Very user-friendly and customizable. I also tried Mint and thought it was pretty good except for the fact that none of the credit unions I utilize permit Mint to access the accounts. Sort of defeats the purpose if you can't get your savings and checking accounts to show up lol. Hope this helps you.

Thanks for the reply! Is there also a bill reminder option in the full version of anMoney? I don't see it in the full one, so I'm gonna ask you since you have it!

Choosing a Mobile Advertisers

Hey Guys,
I have a app developed that I have been charging for use, but i am thinking about switching to a ad model and make my app free. I was wondering what advertising options are out there.
I know that admob owns a pretty big market share, but was wondering what are my options regarding how best to choose an advertiser, what are the other advertisers I have to choose from, and is there a benefit of one advertiser vs. another? Which one would pay more? I know this is dependent on how popular my app is.
Thanks for any info provided!!!
I personally use AdMob in my app. It also integrates Google AdSense ads into your app for when AdMob doesn't have an ad to show. I only just released my app a few weeks ago, but it seems like it will generate a pretty decent revenue. I searched before I implemented AdMob, but I really didn't find anything else.
Ed
wow...so admob has a monopoly of sorts in the market eh? So people use admob or get no ad revenue at all?
What about for the apple iphone? I heard there was iAds, and I guess admob as well? Is one better than the other?
can anyone provide anymore insight, or know of a forum which is popular among android/iphone app developers to better answer my question? There don't seem to be that many app developers browsing these forums.
thanks!!!
Personally, i use admob and have 2 apps using it. I don't make much from it (usually around $0.20 a day) but it's better than nothing i guess
As for which ad company to use, it doesn't really matter. They all pay out roughly the same: Millennial, AdMob, JumpTap, MobFox, etc. It's just down to personal preference really

Can you briefly say something about your app? Is it game and what kind?
How many downloads have you had so far?
When it comes to in-app ads the industry offers much more than just regular banners. There are other ad formats that deliver much higher cCPM than banners but their implementation depends on the kind of app you have.
I work for LeadBoltApps - our speciality is Content Locks for example; Ad mob is mostly banners; Airpush does Push Notifications and so on. Hope that helps.
My experience with Ad Networks
I have a weather app and needed to get ads going immediately at launch to fulfill my contractual obligations for the weather data provider.
I tried both Inmobi and Millennial Media. The problem with Inmobi is that they want to review your app and approve it for ads once it is up and available from the store.
Millennial Media was much easier to work with. Ads were running in my test app even before launch. There wasn't any manual approval hurdle to jump through.
I also tried to work with YP.com (AT&T Interactive) since my app uses location and they pay good rates for local ads. They wouldn't talk to me until I get 1M pageviews per month.

Rainfall Data App. Self sustainable app

Have you ever wondered what the rainfall is and if you log your own records what other guys around you get?
This Idea came when I searched Playstore and found No hits, not one. This might be because no one on earth cares about amount of rainfall statistics, if that is the case then this thread can be regarded as web trash...
But I have an need for being able to log it on my phone and comparing stats with others
The idea of the app is that you upload your data as rain falls and other users do the same, not only will it be convenient and quick to use android for this but if uploaded to the web, others can access regional data and check different locations rainfall stats(map view maybe).
And the best of all is that once a few people constantly upload information it will escalate into an self sustaining application requiring minimal maintenance and updates.
How hard can it be to develop such an app and what skills will be required?
Hope you can share your thoughts on this topic, if it sound like an epic fail, speak your mind...

Google Latitude (is no more) :(

Hi all.
I could not find any mention of this in the forums although I suspect many of you already know that Google Latitude will soon be retired (next month I believe)
In fact the current version/update of Maps is missing the Latitude feature.
This is a shame as I used this App more than anything else. It was a great way to let my family/friends know where I was. It was so handy to keep my mum a little more calm as she could see where i was while i was out riding the motorbike.
Does anyone know of any other Apps that offer real-time background location sharing (that does not require the B-party to install an app)?
Google+ does offer location sharing but from what I can see it simply makes a new post each time you check in somewhere. This is not what i want.
Cheers
Heath
Well, you get some you lose some, and in Google's case, whenever an app becomes less used, they will decide to close shop and move to other projects. That's how Google mobilize their project teams, and trust me, Google has A LOT on projects in mind. Who knows, in the future, Google+ might just join the ranks of Wave & Latitude as fallen heroes ...
Ah yes. Google Wave. Thanks for the flashback. We had some fun on that.
I thought it was a very useful tool.
Does make me wonder what they have in mind to replace Latitude.
But i cannot help wondering why they shelved it. I imagine it would have been a pretty worry-free app. All the meta-data is basically contained in Google Maps so its not like it would have been too much hassle.
I cannot help but wonder if it were n00bs complaining about Privacy issues (after not understanding how it works)
No?

Google did not close Latitude because of lack of use. They did it to force its users to Google+. They did similar thing with Picasa - made it part of Google+ - it used to be a great program but now it is much less fun.
I too am very disappointed that Latitude has been discontinued in an effort to troll people into Google+ and am beginning to dislike Google's policies more and more and trust them less and less.
I am going to jump on the first decent Ubuntu or Firefox phone that comes along and say goodbye to android.
Oh great... I was looking for it. First Google Reader, now Latitude.
I was heart broken too...i was the fan of google maps because of latitude...lets see what google has to offer...google+ is no fun...every time i have to check in to show my location..time consuming and no fun.
