Hi all,
My Xperia Z3 was working great until I updated to the dreaded 5.1.1. Along with the other known bugs (USSD, battery drain, etc..), my phone is not ringing at all. The ringer slider is grayed out and cannot be moved. After rebooting, the ringer works for 1 or 2 calls then it goes back to silent. Have anyone faced this issue?

You need to do a factory reset.
I had that problem sort of. My phone after flashing a particular rom would basically go straight to voicemail. Called my isp, turned voicemail off, alls well.
Thanks for the answers. I noticed that when I disable background processes in Developer options the ringtones work fine. However, disabling background processes messes up the phone and many apps don't work properly. I might try factory reset but I was hoping for a simpler fix for this issue.

Hello, i have my nexus 5 for 2 weeks now and I noticed a problem my friend with a N5 doesn't have.(or anyone else) At night, right before I sleep i put my phone on silent so i dont get awakened by calls or anything else . But if i set it on silent the alarm volume gets on silent as well.
Seriously, i didn't have this problem on any other device and everyone sets his phone on silent for obvious reason. I had android 4.2.2 on my older device and even there you could tick "Alarm on silent".
What's causing this bug?
Stock Android 4.4.2
Edit: this is a basic feature every phone has, please dont suggest me getting 3rd party alarms from the google play store, thanks.
Try checking the alarm volume in settings and see if it changes when you put the phone in silent/vibrate.
It shouldn't.
Yes, when i put it on vibrate/silent i cant even scroll the alarm's volume in settings , it goes straight to no volume.
There's a post with users complaining about the exact opposite. They want to know why the phone isn't 100% silent when in silent mode. This would contradict what's happening to you.

Ok, what can i do to repair this bug?
I just tested this on my Nexus 5, and I can confirm that this is NOT happening on mine. Setting the phone to vibrate or even silent has no effect on my alarm setting whatsoever. (See the attached image. Note the vibrate icon in the notification bar.)
Do you possibly have a third-party alarm or other sound-controlling app installed? You say your phone is stock, but do you have anything such as Xposed, that can affect system settings?
I know it's probably the last thing you want to do, but you might try doing a hard-reset, and seeing if the conditions persist BEFORE installing any 3rd party apps. If it's working normally at that point, then keep checking it as you reinstall your apps to see if you can narrow down the culprit. If it DOES persist with a freshly wiped device, then you may want to call Google support, as that would be considered a defect.
Oh! Also, make sure you're on the latest build (KOT49H). If you're on an earlier build for some reason, it could be why your device is acting differently than everyone else's.

Hard restted once with the apps being restored and it was the same, then i hard resetted the last time without signing in my google account and everything works fine now, thanks!
did you ever find out which app caused this? i have the same problem
it might be a late answer, but it may help anyone who happens to find this post with this issue (as i did)...
I was having the exact same problem with my alarm, but I noticed that it happened after installing "Alarmy (Sleep if you can)" app from play store. It somehow overrides system volumes, and locks it after uninstall.
I reinstalled it and set the alarm volume from inside that app, and now it works as expected to do (silient ringer with alarm on).
This might happen with other Alarm apps, remember if you did install any.
Hopefully it helps someone, as this happened even on 4.4.4

I have figured out that problem happened after installing "Xtreme alarm clock."
And I solved this problem with "Alarmy(Sleep If U Can)."
Thanks for your information.
This morning my alarm did not sound. Checked all settings everything was set to on.
Tried to call the phone no sound. Re-booted and everything is now working as it should.
Also 3 times in the last two days the screen has frozen and I have had to reboot the power using the power button.
Has anyone else had these issues?
I am using this as stock with the latest OTA update.
Same issue here.
Everything is working fine, but ~1-2 Times a day the Screen stays black and won't turn on again until a reboot via the power button. But the touch is working, because after the reboot some of the apps on my homescreen are moved (because I moved them while whiping on the black screen). Everything else is fine, CM11S Stock latest, *33R.
Just changed the Gov from "Interactive" to "On Demand", no other Modifications.
Greets, Alex
I'm having problems in this area as well, my notification will not work. I do not get any notification sounds at all even though everything is on. My call ringtone work fine, nut no notifications, not from email, or my third part oultook email app, and neither from my SMS's. It was all finw in the beginning but now it just stopped working. I got the phone with 33r and stock, have not done anything to the phone yet, and don't want to, but i cant figure this issue out.......any help would be greatly appreciated......
Same problem here.

Just realize with your post that I have not posted an update......I like a certified dildo, had my phone in 'night' mode from the advanced power menu.... Put back to normal.....issue resolved......I would prefer more notification choices out the box, but that's easily fixed.....

Perhaps related to Quiet Hours getting stuck?

Interesting. I've been having the same problem, and this prompted me to take a look at my Quiet Hours setting. On the Quick Settings panel I noticed that the Quiet Hours icon was lit. That was odd, because I was well outside of the quiet hours I had set. When I tapped the icon, it would not change. I had to long press, toggle a setting, and exit back out before the icon started working normally again. Now everything seems to be fine. Hope this helps someone; the problem was driving me nuts!
I too have had this issue! No lights, sound and action
But I solved my problem :=) on my own because I'm Mister Wonderful :>
I reinstalled the quiet hours tile.
Then I went into quiet hours setting and changed hours from 00:00 & 00:00 to 01:00 & 07:00. The latter being outside the current time of day I was working in.
Then I went back to the quiet hours tile and turned it off. Holy Smokes this time it actually worked.
Because the power charger was connected the notification lamp began to burn green again. SMS notification sounds were heard. Even "You got mail" wasn't afairid to stand up to be heard.
Another wonderul day in paradise!
After upgrading to lollipop, I have noticed when recieving a call that sometimes my phone will ring for about 1 second and then stop but continue to vibrate. I am not using any quick cover or anything. This doesnt happen all the time but it does happen quite often. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm completely stock on 5.0 (i have deleted my cache partition and the problem still persists)

No, just the stock tones. I find it happening sometimes with my SMS messages as well but not all the time.
Update: I have since unlocked my bootloader (wiped) and rooted my phone and the problem still persist. Seems like I'm not alone, I have starred this so hopefully someone can see it. https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=81178#makechanges
Anyone have any suggestions that I could try?
update
I had thought I had fixed the problem by re flashing the stock image of lollipop, the problem went away and my phone started to ring again but shortly its back to only vibrating. I noticed that the little vibrate symbol was popping up in the status bar whenever I received a call, even when I turned off the also vibrate for calls option. I then remembered that when I use the volume butler app and set it to my vibrate profile that symbol would also pop up. I uninstalled volume butler and everything seemed to be working fine. Next I Checked the play store for comments regarding the issue and I noticed two things: There was a recent fix "ringtone changing to silent upon first install" and it said that the app was installed onto my device and not requiring an update even though I had just uninstalled it. So I decided to open it up and it was as if I was starting the app for the first time as none of my previous data was in there for testing purposes I decided to set up the same profiles that I had before and try calling my phone and my phone rang like it should, weird. Perhaps I had two versions and that was the one that I originally uninstalled is that even possible?( I could have sworn I had updated it,as it was under the up to date app list) Regardless, I uninstalled it again and everything is still working as it should. Hoping that this was was the culprit I will continue to test my phone and see.
I've a N5 16GB on 5.1.1 and I've started facing this issue recently. Few weeks back my notification sound for Gnow automatically switched itself to 'silent' with vibration ON. Since then I've tried multiple times to switch it to a different tone but to no avail. As soon as I refresh my Gnow cards the settings switches back to 'silent + vibrate' mode
I rebooted the phone in safe mode to check for any bloat ware but still got nothing to blame. I don't know what went wrong. PLEASE HELP.
Does anyone else have a problem with notification sounds/ringtones after the phone goes into deep sleep? Have to reboot to fix the issue .
yes i do.even after reboot it prolongs

Has happened here twice. Had to reboot to fix it. My worry is that this could happen during the night so that the phone won't wake me up in the morning (the alarms don't sound either - in fact no sound at all can be played, be it from ringer, notifications, Spotify or YouTube).
Hasn't occurred now for three days, but I've rebooted each day due to separate issue which involves not notifications not being received unless I open the app (happens in Facebook Messenger and Signal).

Was able to find out the cause... Was the hike app intefering with system sounds.
Once notifications start coming up without sound, clear away the hike app from recents.. should fix the issue... Atleast it did for me
I'm noticing the exact same issue. Sitting here WATCHING my phone ring and making no sound. What exactly is the "hike" app? Is that something you've installed or is it a native app? I don't think I have that on my phone so I'm looking for a solution.

Its a third party app like WhatsApp... I'm certain the issue you are facing is due to a third party app... Next time the sound stops, try clearing your recent apps... And see if that fixes the issue ...
I'm having the same issue and I do not have the hike app

It could as well be another third party app... Doesn't necessarily have to be hike..... Try and see if clearing your recent apps fixes the issue for you
What does clearing mean? Like delete my apps?

I am also running into this issue. Im still in the process of uninstalling apps one by one to narrow it down if it is an app thats causing it. Has anyone pin pointed what is causing this? Im almost ready to factory reset the phone and add the apps back one by one but I would rather not spend the time.

I had that same issue with certain apps. For me though, I didn't realize the extent of Data Saver and had to allow Gmail and whatnot to have unrestricted access and then they started popping in right away.
You wouldn't happen to use Data Saver on your phone?
Just a thought
Cheers!
I appear to have this issue however, safe mode, factory resetting, etc does not fix it. I do not get notification/phone/music sounds.
This issue is still there even after the 8.1 update... Anyone got it fixed?
For me the notifications won't make any sounds, they pop up but silently. I tried playing some music and the speaker works, I also didn't have any issue with alarms. Just notifications.

I have a Nexus 6P and my wife has a Pixel XL and we were both having the same issue with 8.1, no notification sound with text messages and call ring tone. I did most of the suggestions that I have found online (factory reset, clear cache/data in messaging app, change sound) but none of them worked. I was about to downgrade to 8.0 but I saw that both of the apps (messages and phone) were being "optimized". I disabled battery optimization on messages and phone, rebooted and so far it seems to have fixed it. My only guess is that they optimized those apps a little too much. Good luck.
Settings > Apps and Notifications > Messages > Battery > Battery optimization

I also noticed the issue on v8.1 that I flashed a few days ago. Thought it would have been fixed by now. Ended up downgrading to v7.1.2 again to fix the issue.
