With the news that Google will be releasing monthly OTA updates, I am wondering if we can create a method to apply OTA updates on rooted/modified devices (e.g. modify the update.zip itself to bypass whatever checks it performs)?
I run stock, but with root, xposed, and many system applications removed. Returning to 100% stock each month, updating, then re-modifying is a tedious process that I am not looking forward to.
Does anyone have experience with how the OTA updates work? Is it even possible to modify the update.zip to remove the check for a stock /system?

Yes it is possible to modify the script. You will have to browse through it, delete the assert lines that pertain to each system file you modified, and also delete any patch and permission lines for each of the files you modified.
So as you can see, it is much easier to just flash the system and boot images when they are posted, then make your changes (root, Xposed, etc.), rather than modifying the OTA script.

Thank you both, definitely easier just to flash the factory image and re-modify. I'll have to make my own update.zip to automate the process for future updates.
I wonder if Google will be releasing new factory images for each OTA; I hope and assume so.
So we have to flash only system.IMG and boot.IMG from the latest factory? Only these 2 files?
Tnx

this is for Software Version 77.8.10.XT897.Sprint.en.US
you can check your version Settings > About Phone > SW version
Nothing has been stripped out or changed, this is completely stock.
To be clear it is NOT a full ROM and will replace your

If you have added anything to these directories it will be removed.
I added Superuser to system/app is the only modification.

Will the previous packages (ie 1% battery/toggles, power menu) work with this updated deodexed? I can't get my phone to boot whenever I flash those .zip packages with this system file.

That's great I appreciate the work! However, after reflashing stock boot and recovery (I have two Nandroids already, one with aarrrrggghs kernel and one with shabby's kernel) and installing the update, I can't seem to get the darn system to boot after flashing the updated deodexed system. I have yet a few more things to try, so I will post an update as well. As far as testing all of this along with your mod zips, I am a willing volunteer! Perhaps I should've been more specific:
fastboot flash boot boot.img (taken from shabby's stock files)
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
voodoo ota rootkeeper protect then unroot
download update
installed
reflashed TWRP and made another Nandroid of updated stock system
...now here's where I get confused on the wipe before install...
do I just wipe cache/dalvik? or those two with factory reset? or a full system wipe?
that last one doesn't make much sense, but in science you analyze all steps, eliminating them, and whatever is left, however improbable, must be the way yadda yadda.

Wipe Dalvik should be onlything you have todo when flashing unless someones mods say todo otherwise. also heads up i think Shabbys kernel is just stock no changes to it except he added P's and Q's for the description
Huh...because once I flashed shabby's p & q wifi was completely blacked out...interesting tho. And I did figure it out and am fully DeOdexed with the power boot menu...just used the XDA assistant widget to replace (loosely) the toggles, and I have several widgets that display battery %. Did you flash shabby's kernel on the update? Because both shabby's and arrrghhh's kernels work with the original software version (77.6.36.XT897.Sprint.en.US) only. Modules have been changed in the update and wifi breaks every time.
Yeah..that's where I goofed. Using kernel builds for a completely different software file system/build. I didn't realize at the time that they are software specific.

Whenever I attempt to wipe dalvik cache, I always get this error:
E:unknown volume for path [sd-ext]
If you have apps2sd enabled in your rom the /sd-ext partition holds a separate dalvik cache from internal memory. Because of the way the sd card is mounted, there's no method of mounting an ext partition at this time but TWRP still looks for it when wiping dalvik cache. Its just the way the recovery's wired, but everything's fine.

this shouldnt wipe any user data or play store installed apps just make a backup apply it and if anythings missing go back to your backup you just made
Dalvik & cache wipe was all I did, worked like a charm. Also I wanted to point out that the updated power boot menu works flawlessly.
AND I was able to mod my 3G/4G status bar icons using ROM Toolbox Pro. However for some reason that's the only ones it will do, all the other icons it will either run & tell me to reboot then no changes or run the innstall operation for literally over 20 minutes and I have to force-kill the app. I have emailed the dev team about that including a spec report on our phone. Have yet to hear anything back when I do will update again.
P.S. I changed the 3/4G icons to the Droid 4 style where it shows LTE next to the 4G.

Good evening.
Yesterday I installed the MaximusHD rom (previously the phone was stock).
I did a backup with HTC before flashing the rom, but when I tried to restore the backup, HTC Sync didn't work.
Now I have my videos, photos and music crypted in .xml files in C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\HTC MediaHub\Backup\BR_HT23RW405191 and I can't recover them!
Does somebody have any suggestion please? :crying:

HTC Backup does not support photos, videos, music or documents. It backs up settings and apps.
---------- Post added at 11:24 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:18 AM ----------
If you used HTC Sync Manager, which is supposed to backup the files you mentioned, you could return to stock. Restore and then move the files to your PC. Then when you reinstall maximus you could move them that way.

Just thought of something, is USB Debugging enabled on your phone now? That could be the problem.
So in settings>About>Software information>More: keep tapping the build number will activate the dev options

Here's one for you boys,
Successfully rooted .77, LB on D6653 (thanks to zombiej79). Everything's running smoothly except for Screenshots. I get the "Content may be protected or the memory may be full" every time. Now some may think this isn't a big issue but i screenshot almost 20 times a day. its a major buzzkill.
Before you ask it's not while running an app its even on my homescreen/lockscreen. I've tried the following with no success:
- Downloading third party screenshot app with SU access
- Manually deleting the Pictures folder and sceenshots folder then recreating
- Wiping Change/Dalvik Cache
- Re-setting permissions in Recovery
If anyone has any idea's besides re-flashing it'd be greatly appreciated. If flashing is the only way can someone direct me to a guide on how to do it without re-rooting and downloading all my apps etc.
Just a thought have you flashed latest relese recovery? Maybe a r/w problem get root browser and try and set system to r/w see if it works

Yeah! 2.8.1 nut's dual recovery? I've tried the whole r/w and no success.
The weird thing is I can't seem to delete the Pictures folder. It just comes back instantly every time after a refresh and I can't make another one (it doesn't tell me i can't it just disappear/reappears after i create/delete it), which makes me assume its the permissions, but all other r/w features work perfectly.
Do you save them to internal or sd?

Try this too sre if it can capture the screen
Okay the SD card fix did nothing, it's telling me everything already has the permissions. As for the screenshot app it worked, because it didn't save in the default location (/sdcard/pictures/screenshots) it saved in it's own app folder. Which brings me back to the fact I have no permissions in my internal storage. is their a way to change the Sony default screenshot save location?
It honestly has me stumped. Everytime i try to manually delete the folder @ sdcard/Pictures/Screenshots it will instantly re-create both folders it's self with a time stamp of 30/4/1970 and be non-writable.
Try settin your date and time manualy reboot and see what happens. Been trying to find something to help but not really sure. The folder have these permissions?
Only other thing I can think is reflash the. 77 zip dont wipe see if that corrects it. Wont lose any data that way

Solved.
So, I've narrowed it down to all Stock Xperia folders i can't change permissions or don't have permissions. Weird. but I've worked around it. I couldn't change/delete/rename or modify the folders without them suddenly re-appearing. But the system let me cut/move them (strange i know). so I've completely moved all folders to a trash folder and re-created new ones. and Bam. it works.
Here's a screenshot of my fully rooted working phone. Wish i could pay ya back for your efforts mate thanks!

Flashed the 5 way reboot it works!

I Didn't use this one, I don't know whats causing the issues, it may be the other mods in addition. I used Joel Droids Batch Deodexer myself. I downloaded the zip from this thread and deleted the system app/priv-app and framework folders inside of it, and replaced it with the ones I deodexed myself.
1. You just go to your system folder with Root Explorer and copy priv-app, framework, app to your SD Card.
2. Copy those 3 folders from your SD Card to your Computer into a folder on the desktop. Name it whatever you want. I named it myrom
3. Run the Deodex program.
4. When it's finished, copy the 3 folders inside the my ROM folder and place it in the Zip folder you downloaded from this OP.
5. Reboot to recovery
6. Wipe Cache / Dalvik Cache
7. Flash the Zip
8. Wipe Cache / Dalvik Cache
9. Reboot
10. it will take about 15-30 minutes total to reboot
LET IT BOOT FIRST BEFORE DOING ANY INDIVIDUAL MODS
Flash the 5 way reboot individually if you want that. I did and even that took a long time to reboot. All is good on my end and I am deodexed
Just to be clear, when you say the sip from this thread, you're saying you started with "DeodexedLPModified.zip"?
Will doing all of that remove all of the modifications the OP originally touted? I was mainly attempting this for Mobile Hotspot.

3. priv-app
Then copy that folder from your SD card to your Computer Desktop. Share that folder via Dropbox. Send me a link I will download it and deodex it for you. I will send you the completed zip. It's important that you pull them directly from your phone.....
I will send you the flashable zip file....I don't really ever give up until I find a solution
I need to buy a Chinese phone and add gapps on it. No problem to do it since I can flash gapps package from CWM Recovery (custom one...) without rooting my phone...
I would like to know if there is any way to remove Bloatware with CWM (or other custom recovery) ?
Since Custom recovery have root access, it should be possible to remove anything unwanted, this without having to root the ROM itself... I am right?
All thread I have found recommends to...
Root, use application like Titanium Backup to do the clean and finally unroot (if root is not wanted)
or
Disable application from "Application management" menu...
I can't use first solution because AirWatch (Mandatory in our company) will not work anymore (Device compromised) even after Full unroot from SuperSu (I made the test) and I don't like the second solution (keeping the bloatware on the phone even if disabled)…
Any idea ? Thanks in advance and sorry if this topic as already been discussed... I didn't find it!

Thanks for the clue, I will dig this way!
Read this command " delete("/system/app/calendar.apk"); "
Add this command in your updater script and make a flashable zip with that updater script. Flashing it will delete the calendar app. Add more delete command lines in the updater script to remove those boalt wares

One more question...
To get an apk list I want to first make a flashable zip with something equivalent to "dir *.apk>c:\AllApk.tx" in DOS in order to get a txt file on my SD card...
Then I can just copy and past all I want remove and create a list of delete command in a second flashable zip.
Do you know how to do that? Or is there some application that can do the trick ?
I just now remembered a better idea, download aroma file manager, flash it via cwm and delete anything you want! It's a file manger for recovery mode
Works great! Thanks!
Awesome
it will be big help
