Thinking of buying unlocked D6603 on AT&T - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I'm currently on AT&T with an HTC One M7. I've had my fair share of rooting and playing around with this and with my contract ending in 2 months, I've been eyeing the Z3 as my go to device for the next 2 years and intend on buying it before my contract is up to just replace my HTC soon.
1) Currently it would be a hassle for me to call AT&T to get a new nano SIM card, so I guess that purchasing a cutter to convert my current one into a nano SIM would be fine? I wouldn't need to call them up to mess around with a new IMEI or anything assuming I'm basically using the exact same SIM card?
2) I've heard that the D6633 version (dual SIM) has full support for AT&T LTE whereas D6603 is merely only 4G. Can anyone clarify this?
Thank you

I have full LTE on AT&T. I just needed to have a nano SIM card installed at an AT&T store. There were zero issues.

I've also got full LTE on a D6603 on AT&T--speed leaves HSPA+ in the dust. Purchased directly from Sony store and registered as a new line with the guy in the AT&T store scanning the box for the IMEI code. No problems at all although it does seem to need a strong LTE signal. At home I have to switch network mode to WCDMA/GSM or it will constantly hunt between LTE and H+ with a significant battery hit.

[Q] Unlocked Fido Razr HD w/ AT&T Sim: "SIM not allowed MM #3"?

Got my FIDO Razr HD. Rogers SIM = all is good. AT&T sim = asks for unlock code, which i buy online.
After entering code, phone appears to do a factory reset. During the reboot, a box pops up:
"SIM not allowed MM #3"
Now the phone permits "Emergency Calls Only" with the AT&T sim. Rogers SIM = still good.
When I put AT&T sim into my other phone (HTC desire) it works fine on roaming (rogers network). So I know sim + signal is fine.
Don't understand this error message.
Did I mess up the unlock?
advice appreciated, thanks.
Do you have another Canadian SIM you can try? Bell/Telus etc?

I was doing some research for you, have you tried using a different SIM card from AT&T? The SIM might be corrupted.

Thanks for the replies everyone. to answer the questions:
1) i don't have any other sims right now: just rogers + ATT. Next time i am w/ friends I will ask to borrow telus/bell microsim.
2) they were regular sims that were cut down.
3) haven't had a chance to visit USA since posting topic- but when i do, i will test both cards and also visit an AT&T shop to bug them about it.
Is sim corrupted? I don't think so because it works fine in HTC desire. But I guess trying a new one will prove or disprove.

How do we know this is happening, has someone from AT&T discussed this before?

I want to let you know that I was able to use a Bell sim card in my phone. That's what I used to unlock it with.

I am using this phone with at&t with no problems, I took my sim out from my iphone 5 and used a adapter to go to micro sim and it works fine, no issues.
I'm receiving a Fido RAZR HD to be used with AT&T this afternoon, I'll let you guys know if there are any issues.
OOI, is AT&T seen as a much better GSM network than T-Mobile in the US?
I was looking at the T-Mo USA site, and there are some amazing "Monthly4G" SIM only plans (e.g. $30/month for 100 minutes, unlimited texts and 5GB of HSPA data).
This seems much better value than AT&T, Verizon and even Sprint! But is their network sketchy compared to the others?

AT&T offers the second largest network coverage behind Verizon. They are also one of the two GSM carriers in the United States, and tend to be more popular with mobile phone enthusiasts because their UMTS bands are more common and used with other regions such as Canada or Australia. T-Mobile does indeed offer excellent value, but they use mainly AWS band in addition to PCS band in selected regions, thus making them the lesser choice for using unlocked phones from outside the country.
Hey,
Just looking on wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Mobile_USA#Radio_frequency_spectrum_chart
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT&T_Mobility#Radio_Frequency_Summary
It looks like T-Mo mainly use 1900 for 2G and 1700 for 3G, whereas AT&T use 850 and 1900 for both 2G/3G, right?
So if I bought a Canadian Razr HD XT925 and came to the US, would I be able to use T-Mo's 3G network? I am guessing no, since it does not support 3G on 1700MHz.
But then there is a note on that Wiki page saying that they now have a roaming agreement with AT&T after the failed acquisition. So if I forced the phone into "WCDMA only" mode from the test menu, would it then fall back onto the AT&T 3G network?
Sorry for taking the thread slightly off topic
Cheers,
Su

As you have read, T-Mobile did acquire PCS bands from the failed merger with AT&T, but these bands are not as utilized as their 850 MHz band so it's not as widely available as you may think. Some areas might be able to use the 1900 MHz band for T-Mobile 3G, but I would check with fellow T-Mobile users to confirm first before you dive in headfirst. I know that there are T-Mobile users in the Dallas-Fort Worth area that are getting 3G data connectivity with their unlocked AT&T iPhones.
Well T-Mo do daily plays for like 2 bucks right, so I can always try this out before committing to a contract
Do you think AT&T would be the better bet if I am bringing my own device from Europe?
The reason I ask is that I may be coming to a US college for a couple of years, so naturally, I'm planning ahead to see if my phone will work over there

If you're using a device from Europe or Asia, then yes, you have a much higher chance of being able to get 3G connectivity with AT&T. Off the top of my head, Nokia seems to be the only one that tries to actively keep AWS band in their radios.
Hmm, so I did a bit of research on GSM Arena. Seems the Nexus line of devices consistently support 1700MHz 3G (including the Nexus S which I currently have).
Guess who cancelled their Nexus 4 order last week, and opted for a Canadian RAZR HD instead...
Whoops

[Q] is the sprint version be international with sim slot?

According to google play, this will be for T-mobile and sprint. And I have a Sprint SERO-P right now. I'm using Note2 w/ custom ROM and it doean't has sim slot even though it's international w/ GSM modem. My contract is not over until mid next year. I consider that Nexus 5 would be an upgrade for me if:
1. it support tri-band LTE which sprint appear to say so on the aprint page.
2. it's truly international w/ sim slot.
Then I wouldn't mind pay $400 for it.

Can I get the reference/cite for the second answer? I know sprint said tri-band for the press release.here
Nexus 5 by LG is the first Androidâ„¢ 4.4, KitKat, smartphone capable of using the tri-band Sprint 4G LTE2 network.

There is only one us model therefore it has to have a sim slot. There is no 'sprint' version.
thx, that make a lot of sense. I didn't know there is only one version.

[Q] Will Sprint unlock my S5 for international use?

I switched to sprint about 5 months ago and I got my s5 with a 2 year contract. We also got another line with another phone. The account is in good standing with payments on time always. Will Sprint unlock it for me so I can use it on a trip im taking overseas? I'm not sure what their policy is..and I know they do it OTA, so that means I have to be on stock rom right?
Yes stock rom. Sprint more than likely unlick. Of course you will have to mnew monthly charges. But depend sd wherr your going. If going to us territories sprint will work. Just call sptint anf see
They will usually unlock it for international roaming after having the phone on your account for 90 days.

please note that most of the world is now based on GSM and Sprint is a CDMA based service. Once unlocked you would probably need a GSM sim card installed in order to use the S5 (this sim card can either be one from the US, a more expensive option, or a local sim wherever you are traveling to).
In Europe, especially UK, there are many cheap GSM sim operators.

Yeah that's the plan for me to buy a local sim in that country so I can use the phone with a local number there. Do you know what bands the gsm works on?

Depending on the country involved they use 900 and 1800 mainly but the s5 has all the bands used in Europe. Note that T Mobile is a major carrier so you should be ok with this phone if it is truly unlocked

Which Z3 model to get for ATT for LTE connectivity

Was trying to track down which model of the Z3 I should buy in order to get LTE access on ATT. I have seen some people say to get the 6603 but I was reading a thread that it wasn't working on ATT. Anyone using this phone on ATT and know exactly which model to get in order to use LTE?
The D6603 and D6633 (Dual) both support all of the needed bands for AT&T support. I use a D6633 and have no issues whatsoever on AT&T.
I also use D6633 and get LTE on ATT
D6603 and D6633 will support AT&T LTE. Whatever you do, do not give AT&T your updated IMEI or their system will register it as "unknown" device and you will get 3G only.
I'm using the D6603 on AT&T with no problems (getting LTE just fine).

Which carrier for a month while traveling to the US?

Hi,
I have a International Google Pixel bought from a Google authorized re-seller in India. The model number printed on the back of the phone is G-2PW4200. I am going to be in traveling in the US for about a month starting next week. Which carrier would be my best bet for a prepaid sim card along with fastest data connectivity (LTE)? In the past I'd had some issues using Asian phones in the US due to band restrictions on Asian sold devices. A couple of years ago I was stuck on 3G on AT&T since my phone didn't support their LTE bands. Last few times I've been to the US I have just bought a starter kit from Net10 wireless which has sim cards inside for all the major carrier networks and I can choose to activate my Net10 wireless card on any of these carriers. Is this still the best approach? Or should I look at getting a prepaid sim directly from T-Mobile or AT&T? Which carrier would work flawlessly with my Pixel? To me LTE connectivity for data and international voice calls for super cheap prices (even unlimited) are the two most important things in carrier selection.
Thanks for the help.
Try Project Fi. I'd give them a call.
