[Completed] Nexus one, need rooted. - XDA Assist

Hey guys I'm new here. I got a nexus one running gingerbread. Always loved the phone. But don't have much memory and can't download many apps. The most I use is 8 to 10 apps at most. Can somebody help me or give me some encouragement. I want to be able to use the phone. I'm starting kind of a collection of my favorite phones through the years. This is my number one favorite. I use only unlocked phones and currently use T-Mobile prepaid plan with 80 dollar unlimited. I hear its pretty easy to root. But I'm just learning about root, jailbreak, flash , etc. Thanks for any help. Rick

Hello, You aren't allowed to post you email apparently and it has been removed.
Making this forum the only way for us to help you.
First of all you should ensure wether you have a MileStone (EU) or Droid (US)
You can tell by looking at your phone and checking if it says Verizon.
If it does, I can't help you any further and you should ask for help in the Droid forums. If it doesn't, I'm close to sure we can help you out
So now that you know which phone you have, you've probably done half of the work already. I can't really tell what your problem is, but I guess you have these 2 issues:
1, You have no GPS-Application. You can buy, or get one for the phone. I'm talking about softwares like Navigon and iGo, which aren't free though, but allow you to navigate without internet (for if you don't have an internet contract.)
If you don't want to pay any money and own an internet subscribtion in your contract, you can just use Google Maps to navigate! Update it through the android market and you're good to go!
2, Now for the second issue:
Unfortunately we don't have any chance of getting custom roms! Only the Motorola Droid Does! There is a way through nandroid backups, but seen the fact that you are just new to the whole thing, I'd recommend you to explore the forums and later on install MotoFrenzy, or the official update to Froyo from motorola, which they will, according to them, release by the end of 2010
Hope I helped!
Greetings, Mike

And i have an HTC Evo 3D , ive always been in to technology , especially Phones , im just ready to take it to the next level and start rooting .
Yeah, I had a blackberry bold 9780 since the day it was released, and I always used to follow this site on android development. But when the Nexus S was released on Rogers, I had to switch, and it took me a while to figure out how to Root the device but I love everything about this phone and technology for that matter.

so In a sense , What does rooting do for you.?
It gives you full control of the phone. One some phones, you can't do some things without root. Like screen shot programs need a level of access to your phone that is only available if you root it.
one of the best parts of rooting is having the ability to use customs roms which add a ton of features to your device. You can also over clock for faster speeds, take screen shots, use custom themes to make your phone look cooler, and a lot more.
Cheers
P.S. if this is good information hit the thanks button
If you want to learn some app development you should check out Cornboyz youtube channel.. i was in your position a couple months ago and that helped me a lot. Theres nothing about rooting there but start at tutorial 1 and its an awesome intro to eclipse and android dev

As a member posted above, it gives you full access to your phone. So you can change the rom, kernal, radio band etc. It's a neat thing to mess around with if your into technology and these types of things.
But do be aware that rooting your phone does void your warranty

just search through the whole forum, you'll find many many many information

How to really get started

Okay this may be redundant but let me try. I'm new to this site and new to the whole androids modding.I was thinking of buying the star x26i or the star note i9220 dpad. I'm really not sure where to start once I get phone. If I can't get the direction I think I can figure out the rest or at least search to get info. Any help will be appreciated.
Get started as in what exactly? Are you talking about rooting and custom roms?

as I see you are interested in ROM development then here is a best resource on this site to help you on this subject

I know this is a modding community so the majority of answers are just going to say root root root! But in all honesty, if you are brand new to Android, get used to stock for a bit before you jump into modification. Spend your time reading about your specific device while you play with it and if people are happy with their devices rooted and the process isn't too intensive for you, then give it a shot.

Thanks for all the input. I was trying to be sure if there was a step by step process on what to do.I am fairly new to android phones and want to learn the ins and outs. I'm searching for a new phone now and it seems like the ones I like need something to be done to them before I can use them. So I was trying to be sure of the process before I screwed something up. I like the suggestion of learning the phone 1st which will probably lead me to a name brand phone.I'm currently with boost mobile so my options are limited. Once again thanks for the info.
1. Root
*unlock bootloder* optional
2. remove bloatware
3. read about custom roms
4. go crazy modding
Enjoy stock for a while, Oh and heres a tip, On the process of rooting, You can easily brick your phone.
Meaning Of Brick - It will no longer boot up; You have to replace it.
Well, actually I'm just looking
I googled "Rooted phone, what next?" and got several helpful sites and threads. Most of which lead back to XDA. Although I had a fairly clear goal in mind; I wanted ICS.

I got the x26i and I rooted it with Bin4ry it worked really well don't forget to install drivers.
Leave a thumbs up if I helped you.

[Completed] Modding 101 for devices I couldn't care less about

Ok, so I'm new here. I've known about this place for years but have always been a bit apprehensive about tooling around with perfectly good devices. So years later I have amassed quite a few devices that no longer get used or are a bit out of date. So needless to say my apprehension has melted away and now I'm ready to brick some **** if needed to learn a bit more about this modding thing. So currently with this Pokemon craze I have an old phone that has android 4.2. I need to upgrade to 4.4 or higher to be able to DL the PokemonGo app. My grandson is killing me trying to use my gs7e constantly. I currently own 8 tablets 4 of which are on the T-mobile network. Only two of them are android 4.4 or higher. Problem is they are smashed, lol. Left them on top of my car only to see them fly off while on the freeway. So I can not DL the app on any of the tabs either.
So I have this phone, SGH-T399 I'm willing to brick in order to try and either learn how to get this app or kill it trying. Been googling and my best option ended up coming here. So to make this long story get short in a hurry. PLEASE help. Where can I find the easiest way for me to make these changes in the simpliest terms possible, lol? I aslo am using a laptop with windows 10 if that matters in case I need to DL files and such. Thanks in advance.
Paul F.
ps: I'm also willing to brick a few of the tablets as well, lol.

Hello, I am a new member. Looking for direction.

I am new to the site, though I've been familiar with xda-developers for years now.
I just have a few simple questions that could hopefully get my started in the right direction.
Does anybody have any good recommendations as to where I could start?
I currently use a Galaxy S7 Edge, but for practice I want to start off with some of my older phones (obviously). Ill probably be using my Note 3 for experimenting on.
Also, what cool stuff could I use an old phone for?
Like a phone that I have no intentions of ever using as an actual PHONE again.?
Any help/direction is much appreciated
Thank You
