Root is required for this application. Thanks to DesignGears & Chainfire for putting in the work for root to be on our phones.
Please try method 1 and 2 before posting that it doesn't work. Let me know which one worked for you in the comments.
_________________________________
Method 1 :
Download FDroid from this link - https://f-droid.org/FDroid.apk
Open FDroid and download AdAway.
Some have reported that this AdAway will install the host file without any issues.
_________________________________
Method 2 :
Download AdAway here - http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23060877490004670
(All credit for the link goes to mrRobinson)
After you have installed and opened the app -
Click "Download files and apply ad blocking"
The app is going to crash, don't worry!
Re-open the application and click "Download files and apply ad blocking" again
This time it will give you a pop up saying "Copying of host file failed", once again don't worry!
Now click the refresh button in the top right, and now for the last time click "Download files and apply ad blocking"
You will now be told that it was successful and to restart.
This is how I got it to work, I apologize if it does not work on your device.
Please click the thanks button if this worked for you.

I tried to get the the app from that website but they want you to download it through a store. And I don't know about others but it hangs on downloading icons or something. So the only way I got the app was from mrRobinson post. According to him its the same app, but he just compiled it from the source from the Devs website.

I just installed it normally with no problems. Never even had a crash the first time.
I'm not rooted (yet), but all of my rooted device AdAway just works. So I really don't see any reason for the AdAway NOT to work if your phone is rooted. Unless I'm missing something here...

This was just my experience with it. I have used adaway on other devices and it just installed with no problem. I posted this because I had seen some other people were having issues with it, so I was just letting people know how I got it to work.

I downloaded my AdAway from f-Droid, but I've seen the same crash behavior.
After the crash, the download and apply worked on the first try.
(The first time, I had to flash back to stock and re-root. The second time applying AdAway blocking took a couple of tries before it went through (6 more specifically))
you can try adaway 2.3 official
or
AdAway-release_Build-10.09.13
the new release is working like a charm

Mine also hung on downloading icons....so i went to playstore and seached for busybox...downloaded and installed newest version by jrummy....installed box and then tried the app again and install flawlessly....doesnt mean it will work for everyone but it worked for me...:good::laugh:
I just install it from fdroid. I don't really use a lot of stuff from there as it's mostly in the market, but I do for this one so I don't have to look for updates on a website etc.
i dled it from fdroid also, it didnt work at first, would just hang up on applying the files but i rebooted and it was successful the first try

Thanks for the feedback. I will update the thread to have both methods shortly
I've found supersu leaving dozens of sudaemon's around which sometimes breaks root entirely (until you reboot) or sometimes you can manage to get su to work and then kill apps.
Adaway seems to potentially be a leading cause of this, or maybe it's just the obvious victim, I'm not sure. But I often find it's complaining it could not apply the hosts file, so I get into a shell, find a bunch of stray sudaemon's, kill them, then it's happy again.
I think there's still some tweaking that can be done for su on 4.3.
All I did was install Fdroid, then
Go into to terminal and type this
su
restorecon -R -v /data/data
Then install adaway and run as normal

Use FDroid
Just a quick heads-up. I used FDroid to install AdAway yesterday...no problems, loaded first time and enabled without a hitch. A word to the less experienced Android (Note 3) flashers like myself.
OFF TOPIC Question: What's the best Terminal Emulator to use for someone like me, who wants to learn to use a TE?? Your assistance would be most appreciated.
Thanx...Chief

Just used it. No check box.
I used the apk not the pc version.
Trust me you want this or preferably SuperSU.
Stay away from King Root. It may root lots of things but its constant outgoing communication to some Chinese server makes it not worth it IMHO.
I been using the pc version, I tried the apk and it wouldnt root the android tv box I have.

Does anybody know if I root my phone is there anyway I can hide root so I can still use Barclays mobile banking
Use Magisk... in the settings, you'll see "Hide" hit that, scroll down till you find the Barclays app...and hit hide, then run the Barclays app...all should work. Just don't open the app before you hide it in Magisk. Mine works perfectly

Try this.
1. Uninstall the app completely.
2. Open Magisk Manager. Select Hide Magisk Manager from Settings.
3. Reinstall app from Play Store. Do not open yet.
4. Open Magisk Manager and apply Magisk Hide on that app.
5. Open the app.
Thanks for the reply. I tried your method but vain.
Please help.:crying:

Did you clear data to the banking app?
Many banking apps use root detection methods that do not rely on magisk. If the above doesn't work you may be out of luck.

Look into the canary update channel for Magisk.
It's the only way I can get my banking soda to work with Magisk.
When I first rooted my phone, everything was fine but after a few days some apps started showing up as "This app won't work on your device"
It wouldn't be a problem since I can just download the APK's, but I need to use the Revolut app, it is only available as a mobile app and when you don't install it from the Play store, it just doesn't work.
Can anyone show me a workaround for this?
Maybe a way to trick play store into letting me download all the apps as usual
or a way to trick the app into thinking it's been installed from the play store.
I thought about locking the bootloader again (OEM) but it'll wipe all data, and I don't want that. Because it's been a few months since I rooted my phone and I have a lot of data.
My phone is Samsung Galaxy S10E - SM-G970F if this info means anything.
hmm, try unrooting it, install all apps you need, and then re-root it again.

you must pass safetynet as well as play integrity api in order for the apps to reappear. You can check this status by downloading the application YASNAC for safetynet status and Play Integrity API checker for checking play integrity status.
If your using magisk then you can flash safetynetfix module from here.
Flashing it should make the Basic integrity and cts profile check from False to true in yasnac
It should also turn Basic Integrity and Device Integrity from a Cross to a Tick
Strong integrity will always fail for rooted users. so forget abt that
Then go to apps > find playstore > storage > clear data
Open playstore again and you'll see an outdated UI dont worry it'll restore on the next app opening
in playstore then tap on your profile picture at the top right then go to settings. Scroll down and see if the device is play protect certified.
If it is the apps should reappear.
This is way too overkill tbh. you could just install Aurora store and call it a day since its litt playstore without accounts and stuff.

Yes but if I install it from the Aurora store I won't be able to use Revolut probably.
Also I installed the module, and though the YASNAC check has 2 ticks, the Play Integrity checker says failed on "Device integrity" and "strong integrity." What do i do then?

Actually there is a way to fix that as well.
First of all go to magisk then press the gear icon on top right then select Hide the Magisk app. Allow it to install unknown apps. Give it a good name Let it do its work. do not go to home or anywhere while it is reinstalling the apk as something else
Second of all download shamiko from here.
First make sure you have enforce denylist disabled in the magisk's settings. Yep disabled. if it is enabled toggle it off
Then flash shamiko and reboot. Now once you boot back into the system. Open magisk again (or the new reinstalled renamed magisk app) and go to settings and then go to configure denylist. Now find your app and press the checkbox
Now see if it bypasses the root detection. if not then clear all your apps in your recents and try again. This trick always helps to get around apps with root checks.
