Hi, I just wanted to ask for help, I want to root my new nexus 5, I'm scared because it's new and I don't want to brick it :S, Is there any reliable way to root it ??? Also, is there a way to put Kitkat's soft keys without leaving lolipop ?? Thanks !
Check out the guide and watch some videos. Whilst relatively safe, there is a small risk, especially if you don't follow steps correctly. There is a Windows tool kit available which helps you do it automatically.
Although I think its good to do it on your own as you lean more about the process etc

And this is how you wind up not knowing basic things like what a custom recovery is. Start at the beginning.

Do a quick search, and you'll find probably upwards of 20 threads explaining it
Step 1) Hold down power and volume down
Step 2) Pray to Lord Satan
Step 3) ???
Step 4) Unlock bootloader

Well I highly doubt that but heres a good start
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
Start at the top under root and bootloader sections -- there is an awesome all in one tool that I used to help me. But please do some reading before starting or you'll end up with a bricked phone

Than you didn't spend much time looking. My Index thread (sticky at the top of Development) clearly points to the proper methods for each firmware version.
I would advise the OP, and other n00bs, to be careful about blindly following YouTube guides. Its a shortcut around proper reading and learning. And lack of proper knowledge will get you into trouble. The type of trouble that YouTube guides will not be much help getting you out of. YouTube videos might be a good supplement to, but not a replacement for, proper learning.
@redpoint73 you know he posted that in November, right? Just saying

Ha, no. I didn't notice that. That guy did a nice job zombying a 8-month old thread for absolutely no reason.
If I use WugFresh Root Method to root and flash a custom recovery called Team Win Recovery. Will I still be able to take OTA updates? Also, since WugFresh installs the free version of BusyBox, is it still possible to upgrade to BusyBox Pro?
Thanks

Do yourself a favour and don`t use toolkits: learn to use adb/fastboot, rooting/flashing, recovery`s (sideload, push files) etc etc. Read the 4 top threads in the General section. Sooner or later you`re gona get into trouble with a toolkit and you will not be able to solve it bro :crying:

As everyone else posted read here for rooting info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507905
Use that method instead of chainfire auto root, and any other toolkit that you come across, we had problems with people bricking devices for a while because of these toolkits.
Is there anybody who can direct me in the right direction to learn how to make root for devices as well as bootloader unlocking? Will any developer teach me?

ill make it easy for you.. learn the technique only for the device that you are using, as each device differs and their methods differ as well. as an example, what works for a nexus does not work on any samsung.

I have been using this on my pc to install twrp on my Op6.
The latest update of this app however appears to have problem.
It says it cannot unzip the file.
Anyone can help or is there a bug in this latest update of the all in one app ?

Just follow the guide and do it yourself, it's a piece of cake. Takes 15 minutes max, and you'll learn a little on the way
