Stumped, can't replace CM recovery with TWRP - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay, I'm just mystified.
I've got my OnePlus that I'd upgraded to Oxygen OS, then decided I'd be better of with CM12s, so I swapped over to that via TWRP. Once CM was installed with CM Recovery, I went to install CM 12.1.
This is where I'm stuck. I pushed TWRP via Fastboot, and then tried to reboot into recovery. However every time I do so, I get into a reboot cycle and never get to recovery. If I skip recovery and let CM take over, it replaces recovery with CM recovery.
So how do I get TWRP on? I'm trying to get to CM dailies, but CM won't install them (unsigned error), and can't get TWRP on as I've mentioned earlier.
ANy ideas?

There is a setting in CM to not let it rewrite the recovery with its own recovery when it boots up. Set that, then flash twrp
Sent from my MotoG3 using XDA Free mobile app

As in turn off "Update Cyanogen recovery"? Or is there another setting somewhere? I've got that off, but not having any luck with that either.
Thanks @MadWhips.

That has nothing to do with it. That setting is for not overwriting the recovery when you get an OTA update, not when you reboot the device.
Check out @Heisenberg's posts. His dog has links to just about everything you could need.

Ah OK I see. My mistake .

[SOLVED]Unlockbootloader{fixered}

I have an issue with my oneplusone, I cannot unlock it any more. I tried various ways via fastboot, even tried to fastboot a temporary recovery. It keeps saying locked and rebooting into simple recovery. Before it enters simple recovery, or now cyanogemod recovery non latest cm11 nightlies it shows a red exclamation mark.
cm11 updates are flashable via the cyanogenmod recovery. Other zips are not as they are not properly signed. There seems to be no way I can put the unlock byte to true.
fastboot flashing the factory image also doesnt work, it keps saying locked. So I cannot flash the unlock/tamper zip anymore.
This started when on latest nightlies, when simple recovery went to cyanogenmod recovery. The update cyanogenmod recovery switch in development apperently doesnt always stick. I think something went wrong there.
rolling back to m8 with simple recovery did not work either
anyone have any ideas?

did you have it unchecked in settings to not update recovery. Also are you saying that putting your phone into recovery and flashing tamper zip does not work

I had it unchecked in settings to not update recovery when I was trying all this.
the cyanogenmod recovery does not flash unsignes stuff. this is the same recovery as people call simple recovery. In latest nightlies its included. I had checked the update recovery when flashing nightlies of cm11.

ok sorry I rooted and flashed TWRP right out the box and dont play around with that other stuff. I am assuming also that you have tried to fastboot TWRP to flash the zip and it just loops back? there was another user with similar issues I will see what happened with him. But unfortunately I have not seen or heard of any fix other than booting into temporary recovery and flashing zip. You are saying you can not flash anything.

If cyanogenmod can only flash signed zips have you tried to sign the tamper zip. I am not familiar with CM recovery on nightlies so I apologize for that

I have a victory.
Now I tried twrp from playstore. didnt work.
Tried flashify from playstore, with the original recovery I was on before things went amuck. It said flash succesful like twrp, didnt trust it. However I tried flashing the zip from the temper/unlock thread. Lo and behold upon reboot a custom recovery screen was shown, flashing a zipfile. Victory!
So even when fastboot was locked status, fastboot didnt succesfully flash anything, booting on temp recovery also failed, flashify fixed it. Lucky me. Guess you can add that to the list
this can be locked

update to latest OTA and recovery issue

HI all, I have CM12 installed on my rooted phone and this morning when I switched it on, I got a message saying:
"WARNING: Update Cyanogen recovery is disabled. This may cause issues with updating your device. Please enable Update Cyanogen recovery in developer options"
Now, that option is off because I have my custom recovery TWRP installed on the phone, I'd like to keep that and I don't want to reinstall it after the update, so I believe I should ignore the message, but what I wanted to check with you guys is whether ignoring it will in fact cause any issues as this is the first time ever I've seen this message (this update by the way I think is the first one after installing CM12).
Any idea?
thanks
Disregard the message.
Thanks Heisenberg,
I did that but when the phone restarts trying to install the update, it goes straight into recovery mode (TWRP) and from there I don't think I can install the update, as none of the options seem to allow me to do so, see screenshot http://s23.postimg.org/6d6s7wyq3/IMG_20150625_135453.jpg
All right, I downloaded the zip from here http://cyanogen-ota-bacon.somee.com/ and tried to flash it from TWRP, but I get an error, screenshot here http://s28.postimg.org/zb06wtcpp/OTA_error.jpg, any idea why?
Same here, got an error in TWRP logs that prevented the update to install.
I'd like to avoid reflashing stock recovery only to install the update...
Heres the log: http://s29.postimg.org/njqqqlfc7/Screenshot_2015_06_25_08_49_42.png
Seems something related to outdated "build fingerprint" my device has currently 12.0-YNG1TAS17L
I guess the alternative would be to do it thru Cyanogen Recovery, but let's see what more knowledgeable members have to say as, like you, I don't want to have to reinstall TWRP and SU just for the sake of the update
Looks like you cant use the official update with TWRP. Either flash it via cyanogen recovery then flash back TWRP, or use a differnt zip for update not the official
Thanks for clarifying that davebugyi, then so be it, I'll do it thru cyanogen recovery and then reflash TWRP and probably SU as well
thanks

Apparently even by enabling cyanogen recovery, I still can't get the updated installed as the phone keeps rebooting in the TWRP recovery, which is very odd.

No OS installed in TWRP

Hi guys
I was trying some of custom rom on my OP6 and I wanted to go back to Oxygen OS. So i did a clean installation with system wipe and i flashed the last full OTA update. But since i can't boot to system anymore, TWRP always displays that there is no OS installed despite the fact that I've tried several rom . Is this the first time it's done this to me how can I fix it?

The best suggestion I can give you is to flash stock oos with TWRP, reboot to stock recovery, without flashing anything else, wipe data from stock recovery and startup system.. if it is working you can flash back TWRP and magisk if you need it
Just be careful because at your point is easy to lose all of your stored data

If you wipe system, then flash oos ROM, TWRP will think there is no os. You can just ignore and boot.
Wiping system then flashing any time will make twrp display "no os installed" it does this because it hasn't created files for twrp to check if you have a ton installed. Flashing twrp then rebooting to twrp fixes it.
Reboot to stock recovery?

Hi, need a little bit of support, since I'm new to this as well. I was in a working OOS open beta 25/28, but then I think I flashed the wrong zip (OOS 9.0.9?), and I was not able to boot to system. It kept going to "bootloader unlocked" screen and custom recovery. Currently in TWRP blu_spark 3.3.1-x v. 9.109, and it's showing me no OS installed when I attempt to reboot. I haven't rebooted to system yet.
All the folders in my /sdcard is gibberish... if I try to push a file to it, it says "Required key not available." I did remove all security/passwords from my phone before doing any updates/backups.
I completed a wipe cache/dalvik/system via TWRP, and flashed the OOS OTA stable Android 10 zip downloaded directly from OnePlus Support. Considering this situation, do you still think it's safe for me to reboot to system? Then how do I get to stock recovery from there--is that by holding down the buttons?

No, your internal storage Is like trash cause the last rom you flashed has older security patch than oos10. Your device Is now encrypted and wont boot to system. I Guess you have to erase all via MSN tool or fastboot signed rom. Even if you wiped what mentioned above, your problem still be the data.
Fastboot method?

Thank you for replying. I'm relieved that you know of a couple methods to try.
Is using "Format Data" in TWRP an option for dealing with the encryption??
For the MSN tool, can I use this one? Tried looking around, but it's unclear. "[TOOL] MsmDownloadTool V4.0 International (Oxygen OS 5.1.5)" https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...wnloadtool-v4-0-international-t3798892/page10
I would be more comfortable with using fastboot, but am I at any risk of having lost fastboot, or can I just turn off my device from TWRP right now and hold down the buttons to get there? Afraid to move out of TWRP right now, in case I can't get back. I do have twrp-3.3.1-18-enchilada-Q-mauronofrio.img that I can run from fastboot if needed.
By "signed rom," do you mean I can simply flash one of the zips here from fastboot? "[OnePlus 6][ROM][OTA][Oxygen OS] Mirrors for official Oxygen OS ROMs and OTA updates" https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/how-to/oneplus-6-mirrors-official-oxygen-os-t3792244

That's awesome, I'm starting to grasp how much of a genius Mauronofrio is, after so many people referencing his work.
In his guide, he says, "These ROMs can't be used to update or downgrade your phone but just to restore your phone, so don't use them to come back to oreo or to update from oreo to pie." This may be a dumb question, but how do I know which zip/OOS version to flash, when I don't have a functioning OS on my phone?

That worked! And starstruck that you were able to check that with him. I flashed Mauronofrio's fastboot ROM for 10.3.2 and it rebooted (WOW). I clicked through the Google setup pages and checked that my data and wifi worked.
I then went back into fastboot, booted M's twrp img, fomatted data, and then installed twrp-3.3.1-x_blu_spark_v9.109_op6.zip, rebooted into recovery.
Then I think I made a mistake, because I installed Magisk-v20.4.zip. It succeeded, but now I can't boot into system anymore. Is it too late to flash the 10.3.2 boot.img?

Unable to boot recovery after Android 10 Open Beta 1 OTA

Hi everyone!
Issue is pretty simple to explain - after upgrading via OTA from the latest open beta Pie (29) to open beta Android 10 (30), I can't boot into recovery.
System works normally, the only thing I'm having trouble with are the generic issues discussed on the OP community forum (autorotate and other sensors, Gboard gap...). It is recommended repeatedly that one should reboot to recovery and wipe the cache partition.
The problem is that I can only get into fastboot mode - tried the advanced boot menu, adb/fastboot and selecting recovery mode while in the fastboot mode but it always goes into fastboot.
TWRP doesn't support android 10 yet as far as I know and I've found no other reference of this issue anywhere else. Only thing that comes to mind is to wait for the next open beta and hope it will be resolved after another OTA.
Thanks for your help!
seems the open beta install was more bad for you than mine. Upgraded from op29 to op30 like you, but i had everything stock. No unlocked bootloader, no big customizations, etc. I just tried entering recovery mode via fastboot and it worked like normal for me, had to enter my pin to decrypt my data, and the rest like normal. I'd suggest to downgrade back to pie and reflash the open beta software to see if the issue is gone or not, but that's your call to do so.

I think you stumbled across the answer everyone has been searching for. How did you upgrade? Did you download the whole zip and flash through updated?
This kinda makes sense. Do you remember how big the update file was? It could have been an incremental rather than a full if you weren't unlocked and thus (maybe) didn't change fastboot.

TWRP doesn't support android 10 yet as far as I know and I've found no other reference of this issue anywhere else. Only thing that comes to mind is to wait for the next open beta and hope it will be resolved after another OTA.
Thanks for your help!

Had read somewhere that flashing stock boot.img will help restore stock recovery.. Have you tried doing that

I think you stumbled across the answer everyone has been searching for. How did you upgrade? Did you download the whole zip and flash through updated?
This kinda makes sense. Do you remember how big the update file was? It could have been an incremental rather than a full if you weren't unlocked and thus (maybe) didn't change fastboot.

i grabbed the update file from this news article from xda itself: https://www.xda-developers.com/oneplus-android-10-oxygenos-beta-oneplus-6-6t/
the update zip was the full update and not incremental. i updated my device using the local device upgrader found under the system update settings to do the job for me.
Edit: this part down was meant for OP, sorry for confusion
so far when i updated last night, the auto rotate was tripping, until you mentioned that wiping the cache should do the trick (and it did do the trick thanks for that).
But back to your problem, you should try flashing the file under the link i put into this reply and if it doesn't work, just back up your data, downgrade back to pie, and flash the full update file that is present within that article and you should be back to normal

Thanks for the idea. Unfortunately, it seems that having root and having recovery isn't possible for me at this point.
I've installed the OTA, got the recovery back and managed to wipe cache and everything worked - except I didn't have root. Then I've installed the magisk boot image to get back root, but then the same issues started happening and I was unable to access recovery.
Now I have to decide what's more important :crying:
Use an older version of magisk and you won't lose twrp

As stated above - just downloaded the OTA Android 10 update file for the right device, installed it and didn't install magisk to inactive slot and I had it back. If I tried to install magisk to keep root I didn't have the recovery mode. My guest guess is that magisk still isn't fully compatible with the new Android 10 boot changes.

To me having a stable phone is much more important than a heavily modified device that's unstable at any given time. I'd say use the msm tool, flash back to a fresh build of pie, download the full open beta 30 zip, after its done flashing, reboot twice to iron out any present issues, then unlock the bootloader, and then you should be good to go. If you want root, just fastboot boot into twrp and flash the latest magisk zip and you're good to go. At the end you should have root, an unlocked bootloader, all while on the open beta android 10 build, with access to the stock recovery

[SOLVED] Need help, recovery flash failed (Newb)

Hey Guys,
I got a new OP8T and wanted to install LineageOS 19.1 (First time doing something like this, so this might be a dumb question).
before doing anything, I updated OOS to the latest version using the internal update. I then unlocked the bootloader and flashed the latest LOS recovery. After flashing the LOS recovery, my phone goes into a boot loop whenever I try to boot it, after 4-5 loops, it boots into the stock recovery.
I can access fastboot mode though. Does anyone have an idea how I can fix this or what I might have done wrong?
In the recovery I have the option "format data". Might that do a factory reset?
Or should I go into fastboot and try flashing the recovery again?
I also thought about flashing Android 12 OOS from: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-official-kebab-12-lineageos-19.4484387/page-2#post-87339737
I'm a little afraid to completely bricking the phone now by doing something stupid.
Edit: Tried to "format data". No real changes. Can still boot into recovery and fastboot.
Another thought I had, was that now, after factory resetting, the phone might be back to Android 11, so maybe I could try to flash TWRP for Android 11 and then LineageOS 18.1?
What are your thoughts?
Edit: Forgot to flash the vbmeta.img and dtbo.img partitions.
Flashing them and then flash the recovery again resolved the issue
A factory reset does not downgrade your OS version. Did you flash the dtbo and vbmeta partitions before flashing LOS recovery?

It's a good thing to look through the official thread before flashing anything.

No, I didn't. That was definitely the mistake! I feel pretty stupid right now.... Oh well...
Can I do that now and then flash the recovery again? Thank you!

Do you have any other idea what I could do?
I thought about using the msm tool to reset the device completely, but that seems kinda drastic...

What I would do is go into fastboot and flash dtbo, vbmeta and recovery downloaded from here, then reboot into recovery directly from the bootloader menu.

Is that the same as the most recent recovery and LOS from LOS official download page?
Anyway you're a huge help! Thank you so much!
The file name is identical so I suppose they are the same. I found the link in the official guide.

I'll go ahead and try it first thing tomorrow morning
Don't be too anxious about "completely bricking" your phone if you're just trying to upgrade and then flash Lineage. Don't rush, try some things that make sense based on your understanding of the correct procedure, and make a brief note of each step you took to help you later on if things don't work as expected. I've made lots of mistakes ending in boot loops and crash dumps, sometimes by accident and sometimes intentionally, and there's always a way to get out of it unless you do something really out of the ordinary. Keep your mind engaged and you'll have many "Ah-ha!" moments along the way. Don't give up and ask carefully worded questions when you get stuck. It may take a bit longer to get the job done than you expected but it will all work out in the end.
Flashing the partitions and the reflashing the recovery worked! Thank you all for the help!
