Hi,
my friend got Moto G few months ago and he lives near border (and traveling to another country for few minutes and then come back to home country) so his phone goes a lot of time in roaming mode. I said to him choice network operator manually and it should fix this, well it didn't (I tried it myself).
I know on android 2.1 this worked just like on old phones. You went to another country and you was without network signal until you came back in home network range, but stupid android 4.3 + wants you to change network operator...
on my CM11 with xperia SP it asked every 30 seconds to change network even if I say I don't want it (very nice when you need GPS navigation in car and stupid android wants you to choice network operator). On moto G with stock rom it is even worse. It changes automatically to roaming even if you choice your network operator manually 10 minutes ago. All I want is lock to home network operator and if the signal is gone..silently wait until my home operator is within range and connect to it.
I have no luck to find solution for now, any apps that can fix this? root for now is not an option, but if there is an app that fix this maybe I will be able to convince him for rooting
so no idea how to do this?
@wolfyy - What model Moto G is this? What version of Android exactly? This feature works as you describe in Stock Motorola Firmware based on my experience. Maybe the Android installation on the phone has become corrupt. A factory reset in Android may fix this, or alternatively it is possible to flash a Factory Firmware Image even with a locked Bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/general/index-moto-g-falcon-factory-firmware-t3110795
There is also an app called Roaming Control - which appears to allow disabling of calls while Roaming.
I saw roaming control, but it does not do what I want. After factory reset there is still the same problem.
I don't want that I can't call when I am in roaming, but I want that when the phone loses home network for a second (minute...5 minutes) it doesn't connect to roaming but it silently waits for home network.
phone is Moto G (2013)
andoid: 5.0.2
build n.: LXB22.46-28.1

That is the normal behaviour if you choose: Manual.
Sometimes ROM corruption cannot be repaired by Factory Reset and requires flashing the Factory firmware Image and wiping of Internal Storage.
See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/general/index-moto-g-falcon-factory-firmware-t3110795
Ok I will try to convince my friend for ROM flashing.
however I remembered yesterday evening that on my phone (xperia SP) when i choose manual it was constantly asking me to select new mobile network, that is why I go back to automatically because that popup goes in loop and I needed to reset my phone. And looking around a lot of people have this problem. The phone simply just don't want to wait to come back in home network, always want to connect to available networks.
@wolfyy - I have to admit I'm no longer sure of how 'Manual' behaves in Lollipop. I used the option more when I was running KitKat. But certainly have root access and Xposed or running a custom ROM will offer more options on how this setting would behave.
Note: Flashing a Factory Firmware Image does not <normally> require Bootloader unlocking, or root access.
well in 4.3 did not do this way in CM11 I even had no option for manual select network but for now I am back on stock ROM (still waiting when (not if) my phone will die again ).
as I said I am asking this for my friend, I live 15 km from border and only when I drive close to border from time to time changes signal to roaming, but friend lives 2 km from border and have stronger signal from roaming mobile network, then from home network and I hoped that there is easy way to fix this but looks like only option is to try different ROMs.

Bought a brand new unlocked Moto Defy and I'm having some WiFi and data connection issues...
To start things off, I cannot get any kind of data on this phone. I'm able to make/receive calls and texts with no problem but when it comes to accessing data, it's a total fail. I've added APN's for ATT (ATT MMS, ATT PHONE, AT&T PTA), switched the 2G/3G/auto under Mobile Network Settings, and I just can't seem to get data working. I get data just fine on my At&t Samsung Focus with WP7.
Secondly, I cannot connect to my WiFi router. I've reset the router numerous times, disabled WPA security, tried different security methods, and it just doesn't want to connect. The network occasionally shows up with great signal strength but soon after disappears. I went to the same room as the router and it shows up. When I tap on it to connect, it shows "connecting" and then "disconnected". I also get a WiFi symbol in the upper left hand corner with a question mark over it.
And to top things off, I can't seem to format my WP7 memory card so I can't even install any apk's or ROMs. For some reason, the 2GB card that supposed to come with this phone wasn't even in the box!
Any ideas? Starting to get frustrated, this is my first android phone (3rd android device, first 2 were tablets) so I'm eager to mess with this thing.
Uploading a short video showing the WiFi problem.
Thank you so much!
Also, running 2.2.2

So I've installed Cyanogenmod 7 and was able to get to the band settings but when I select USA Band, it says "Set [USA Band] Unsuccessful.
I found a working bp_nvm_default folder for ATT, replaced original with that, set permissions, and nothing has changed.
I am at a loss of what to do now. And after installing CM7, I have no signal what so ever.
Please!!!! Any ideas?!?!?
Almost since I got my nexus 5 last year it has been loosing its connection about two times per day. It does this in three different ways.
1. total loss. The little outline of a triangle appears and a notification that I have lost my connection. Clicking the notification opens the manual selection of networks. I select the network and all is fine.
2. full connection with an exclamation mark. solves it self by waiting for a while.
3. full connection with H/3G but when trying to access the internet there is no connection. This one is really weird. The solution here is top open the quick settings, select flight mode, which greys out the connectivity triangle but keeps the H or 3G part white on top of the greyed out triangle that has a slash over it. About a minute later the H or 3G disappears and I can turn off aeroplane mode. This either restores the connection or jumps to problem one.
First I thought its a hardware problem, but since I don't want to part with my phone I never sent it back to google for fixing.
When android 5.1 was released I installed that manually and surprisingly did not have any problems at all after this. But then I went abroad and using the same sim connected to a local network in the country I went to. It took 4 tries to join one of those networks. When I then came home this problem started again.
My thought is that there is some setting that should be there that stayed from my trip. I have tried clearing all caches from the storage in settings and the dalvik cache. No difference. I'm not to keen on re-installing my phone again. So my question is, has this happened to anyone else? Did you solve it? Is there something I can do to remove all previous settings for the network to make it work again? Other suggestions?
This happens to me, at least 4 times a day for me, it has only been doing it since I installed 5.1 on my nexus 5, which was a brand new one from Google since I smashed my screen and they just gave me a new one, I'm in the UK btw, not sure where you are but it does take forever to connect to mobile network when I turn wifi off too.
I constantly lose connection at my house going from E to H+ to LTE throughout the day
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app

I'm in Spain.
For me it happened before 5.1 as well. But 5.1 fixed it temporarily, until I travelled with my phone. Have you had to switch to another network with that phone?
For some reason when manually looking for a network it seems to be running on a timeout function because it takes me 60 seconds to get the list, always. This feels like a very antique solution, they should just populate the list as a network is found like wifi does it.
As stated I'm using the LG G5 H830 T-Mobile variant. I am getting 4G LTE data connection and everything runs well (Not in any WiFi range) Yet for SMS and calling as well as mobile hotspot I get "No USIM card' error. This happened after wiping the system and formatting data. Rebooted recovery (as per instructions on forum) then installed the stock firmware & Patch with systemless root and xposed. After this I did factor reset when just pulling the sim didn't help. Still nothing. I reflashed just the stock firmware with TWRP and SuperSU and issue is still happening. I've disabled rebooted and enabled the phone radio. SIM is in good condition and tray as well everything is SECURE and should be good to go.
I'm assuming a new SIM might be a solution. But I'm not counting on it and with Labor Day tomorrow for me I wouldn't be able to pick one up for 2 days. So here I am...hoping someone might have a fix. I know I don't have many posts on here. But I am an experienced user....just not with the more basic of problems I guess
Thanks!!
Has anyone else experienced this yet? I'm just curious...I had it fixed for a couple days. I've formatted data and done complete system wipe. Tried it resetting phone with the COMPLETE zip and TOT using LGUP. I'm receiving texts. Not calls. Not able to send either. I've activated new sim, didn't help. LG support just told me to look into warranty. T-Mobile needless to say just wanted. Sim card does show stock tmobile short code contacts but phone number shows as unknown. Hotspot won't work. I've tried setting the phone number to the sim. Nothing.
Anyways. I don't think I messed with anything, even so I've done everything to start the phone from scratch. Going to replace it, just more or less curious at this point and maybe others have had the same issue.
I believe I had the same issue as you and it was driving me crazy. I was constantly wiping data, system, etc but my phone kept giving the message "roaming indicator off" where it should show the name of the carrier. This resulted in me having LTE data and that's it- no 3g, no phone calls, etc. I couldn't even access the mobile network menu.
What ended up causing the issue was the network mode setting under wireless networks. Keep in mind at this point I'm running a patched rom which now gives more options in the network mode menu than the phone came factory with. I have an area at work where I have to switch to 3g, GSM/wcdma preferred network setting, because although I have full LTE signal, my connection goes dead. When switching back from 3g I chose the setting lte/CDMA thinking this would force my phone to stay in lte mode due to another area on an upper floor where the phone will constantly drop lte.
Anyways this resulted in my phone saying roaming indicator unavailable, the inability to make or receive phone calls, and either the mobile networks or network mode menus being grayed out. When stuck in this mode there is no way to put the phone back into the standard "GSM/wcdma/lte" mode. Even a complete reflash won't fix it. I even used lgup, which worked for maybe a day until it force closed the phone app and went back to roaming indicator unavail. I wiped every partition and even reflashed radio firmware. Nothing worked.
What ended up fixing it was using an app called v10 hidden settings which allowed me to access the network mode menu directly and re-choose the lte/wcdma/GSM setting. Incidentally on first access to this menu through the app there are only two network settings available. Once you choose a GSM setting, the rest appear.
I'm not sure if this was your issue but I hoped this helped because this took me about a week to workout.
Hi guys.
Just trying to share my observation and explore if we can do anything.
I am using D6683 (I think it is support to be a HK based handset). Using Lollipop, it has been working perfectly but 16GB not enough hence MM function that allow SD card and Internal memory merge is appreciated.
Since Sony decide to ditch us using D6683, the only option is using D6633.
1. Try using MM .575, it has huge connection problem. The phone will just stay in GPRS mode even connected to a LTE network. Driving from one point to another point, will just cause it to data connection to hang. Putting it in airplane mode and anything else won't work. Only reboot works
2. Restore stock and upgrade to .291, first day testing seem to be ok. Got LTE connection. It did try to swing a bit but it has been maintaining well. This i started driving with Waze. Connection start to go haywire, but it will be still try to reconnect. Data are "maintained" to certain extend. Let the phone along for about 2 days, the next thing I realize, only GPRS left. The signal logo got no more H, H+ or LTE. Check the phone service menu and all info confirm the LTE is available. Again a reboot fix the problem.
3. Change the setting to only WCDMA + GPRS. The phone was "perfect". No data hang issue and etc
Need all the sifu help. Assuming if the phone is rooted, how is the phone determine the connection method? I presume that the phone will initialize the modem to dial the connection. Can anyone share anything that we can probably trigger a redial and probably eventually inject into the phone data connection sequence. Again using Lollipop, there is no issue.
Appreciate any comments/advice.
Regards
Dan
This is a Galaxy S5 on the Sprint Network with Lineage OS version from a few weeks ago.
Last week this was working fine and then since Sunday cell service stopped working completely. The only change I did was updating TWRP, I did not update LineageOS, but I can't imagine TWRP would have affected it. I ended up reverting back to the stock ROM thinking I would have to call Srpint customer service, but then it started working under the stock ROM. Reflashed TWRP and Lineage OS and no service. Tried older and newest versions of TWRP and Lineage OS but nothing works except stock ROM (yuck).
The cellular connection says "no service" with completely empty bars. About every 5 seconds it will flash like it is connected, with most bars and the little R for roaming, then immediately goes back to "no service". I've tried changing preferred networks and looked at settings but can't find anything to fix it.
Any ideas? It's almost like the network is rejecting it but I don't see why it would matter if it is a custom ROM.
EDIT: oh yeah and on start up it says "Activating cellular service... This may take up to 5 minutes" or and then after a while says "Couldn't Activate" and that it may be fixed by restarting the phone (which of course doesn't fix it). Also I'm not entirely sure if it is related to roaming or not.
EDIT2: I'm wondering/betting this has something to do with the ICCID number. I noticed with Lineage OS installed it says "DUMMY_NV_ICC_SERIAL" but with the stock ROM it is a long string of digits. Now maybe I can change the ICCID on Lineage OS? Or maybe Lineage OS isn't reading my sim card properly (from googling what ICCID is)?
I'm having similar issues trying to use this phone on FreedomPop. It looks like the cell services sometimes continually crashes/restarts - a reboot usually clears that up. I also get no LTE data (3G works fine). I have the correct APN AFAIK (https://support.freedompop.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3322/~/apn-settings---lte-sim). Possibly related to the "DUMMY_NV_ICC_SERIAL" issue?
I've been experiencing this issue for a few weeks now. My LTE data is functional but I cannot send SMS while using 4G. The activation screen pops up when I restart my phone, and it will only activate under Sprint 3G service. I also have the same issue with the flashing service bars, every couple of seconds -- the only way I've found to remedy the lack of service is to turn roaming on and off -- after so many tries, the prompt to select my sim card pops up and it finally connects to the sprint network.
I dont know why this has worked for me but its been a struggle and a wicked pita for me. I use Tello as a provider which is a sprint mvno. This last time to get cell signal i had to flash a stock rom via odin doing a full factory wipe to the phone. I booted into the stock rom to make sure i had lte connectivity. Then booted to download, flashed twrp via odin. Booted into twrp. installed remastered remix 5.7? The next to latest ( marshmello version not neuget ) then booted into RR. Once there i switched it from global to LTE and added the tello apn. I can not connect but i have no idea why this worked. I would love it if someone could tell me why this worked and what i can do in the future to save myself some headaches, flashing factory rom every time i want to change a rom sucks.
