Home button and recent apps button issue - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Seemingly out of the blue earlier today, both my home button and recent apps button stopped working properly. The home button works when the phone is locked to wake, and fingerprint sensor unlocks, but when the screen is on it is useless. The recent apps button lights up and vibrates when touched, but does nothing. Anyone else experience this problem?

A recently installed App must be causing this. Wipe the cache and if it doesn't help try in Safe mode.
Going to safe mode:
1. Power off the phone.
2. Hold the volume down button and then press the power button till the homescreen boots up.
If the issue doesn't happen in safe mode, try uninstalling the recent apps you have installed to save yourself from doing a factory reset.
Cheers:good:

Wiping the cache and safe mode didn't do it. I also went through the play store recently added/updated apps and removed them. That did not do anything either. So I ended up going through with a factory reset and that did the trick. The problem occurred around the time I installed a pair of apps from the Galaxy Apps store. I installed the Car Mode and the Soundboard apps. I went in an uninstalled them, but there may have been something extra installed with the Car Mode app that was still causing issues. In any event, thanks for the suggestions and to anyone in the future, just stay away from the Galaxy App store. We all know there really isn't anything worthwhile in there anyway.
Thanks for the help and suggestions.

I have the exact same problem right now! The home and revents button are useless. I installed car mode and deleted it because it didn't want to start on my galaxy sy edge+...

Just encountered the same problem with my S7, factory reset fixed it. For anyone else that encounters this problem and finds their way here: it was Car Mode that caused this problem, DO NOT INSTALL IT. Thank you for creating this thread.

[Q] Power Button Not Working

Hi guys,
I have a little problem where my phone's power button will not function in any way, long presses, short, almost embedding my thumb in it, all to no avail. This is doubly dissapointing as I have just installed the latest dexter plus patch to fix the problem. I still had the problem on the previous version and I thought a clean start may fix it. The only way I can get the screen on is to press the media play button! Which of course isn't doing anything on dexter.
Hunches:
I have been playing with a light sensor program and using a 3 second press to turn the phone off, I am only thinking this is related as when I re-installed then turned off the phone using a battery pull, that now the media gallery button will now not work at all, so that is a change.
Second, the power button is buggered. Seems unlikely as everthing feels normal, no big drops have occurred from heights, and the button is travelling in and out as usual.
I have also noticed that as soon as I re-insert a battery that the phone starts immediately, the M pops up as if it is already posting. So maybe it is stuck down?? Again, I don't think so, as the mechanism is working per usual.
If anyone can help it would be fantastic, you guys haven't let me down yet, and this thing is purring, but unfortunately I cannot use it lol. Just my luck.
Thanks in advance
another thing, still not solved
Another thing is happening, the phone screen turns on "after" pressing the power button, it may be once or a few times, and then pressing the gallery button.?!?!
Also, at random times it plays a podcast on my phone, the exact same podcast, and from the start, though the duration may be a few seconds then repeat, or it may go for ages, its quite a rude podcast too which has caused me to throw my phone under the car seat to shut it up when people have been trying to talk to me, as you can imagine its quite embarassing.
There are no services or apps running that I can find related to music, it may happen after pressing the camera button, or opening a website.
It is still going really fast though. And I have also reinstalled the light sensor program so I can turn it on and off without causing damage to the power button.
Thanks again everyone.

please clarify
sure, so the only way I can get the screen to turn back on, after turning off as per display power saving preferences, is by pressing the power button, maybe a couple of times, then following that up by pressing the gallery button next to the shutter button, pressing the gallery button doesn't seem to be working to turn the screen on now, but this combo is.
I hope that helped.
Cheers.
EDIT:::
The gallery button alone is working again. sorry guys.
You might just want to reflash it to stock to see if this resolves the problem.
Yeah I think I may have to.
Before I do., I was reading a post on a different forum where another person was having a similar issue. They seemed to solve the problem by using rom manager to boot to a manual restore menu where there was a button tester section, after using it the power button worked for them. I tried but after resetting it displayed a triangle graphic then rebooted.
Is there any way to do this with our open recovery program or any other utility to test the functionality or maybe reset the button or apply a patch etc.
Thanks again :-D

Getting Frustrating
Alright so I followed your advice on your videos on how to reflash to stock, so of course my bootloader does not show up the same as yours on the video. I can get to the bootloader fine, using the button combo or by using quick boot > bootloader, both have the exact same result, the boot loader screens as follows:
Bootloader Fastboot mode
80.89
and that is it....
Also, my computer using rsdlite does not acknowledge the phone, not omap drivers loading etc. Followed your instructions exactly.
This is frustrating me to no end lol.
I am guessing that because I can get to the bootloader with combo no problem, that the buttons physical connections are working.. At least thats a positive.
Can I flash to stock with openrecovery? Or maybe to an earlier version of Dexters froyo? Other ideas?
Any help would be much appreciated guys, trying to use this phone at work with light sensors to turn off screen is not as easy as they say. OMG....
Thanks so much

The fastboot bootloader isn't the right one. So... if you hold volume up + camera shutter while powering on you end up in fastboot? That's really weird.
Maybe your keys have been remapped somehow? Does anyone know a chord to boot fastboot? Perhaps check to see if your USB port is clean?
Lmao
Just my luck to have a weird problem. I thought it may have been remapped so I have been trying the program buttonremap. It doesn't seem to let me do anything except stop the buttons I re assign doing anything :'(
Does anyone have a proper key mapping file that I can replace with my faulty one to hopefully fix it?
Or any other ideas?
Cheers everyone

Ok installed anyunlock it allows you to use any physical button to unlock the screen. It doesn't respond when the Power button is pressed, it responded fine to volume rockers, gallery and shutter though.
Anyone know if this would mean for sure its a physical problem before I crack it open and try and fix it.
Thanks guys.

No one has any solutions for me? Come on guys.

Breakthrough!
I am pretty sure I have fixed the problem, I tapped the phone fairly hard on its sides and back, and lo and behold after a battery pull and replacement it didn't turn itself on, I waited, nothing, so then I held the power button and it started up!!!!
But....I have another problem that happened before that, I am stuck in the boot animation that open recovery uses before going into its program (i.e. where you can load nandroid, wipe dalvik cache etc).
I was about to load a new rom, and was in open recovery, had installed it and about to do the reset and the phone turned itself off, and thats when I got the problem with the sticking boot animation.
So just to be clear, I am stuck in a boot loop, but not with the M logo, the restore logo.
I hope the power button solution can help someone else, as random as it is.
If anyone could help me get out of this boot loop without flashing stock that would be great. ( i can get to the real bootloader now btw)
Thanks again everyone.
Solved it all
Just took the sd card out and rebooted. And the power is getting better after banging it.

So, is your conclusion is that the button was stuck and the banging freed it? It doesn't restick?
The Button is not perfect still. Sometimes over sensitive Occasionally it will not even work but it works most of the time. I am just wondering what cleaning solution I could use to free it some more.
It has certainly been a trying problem. Cheers for the help.
Now I need to figure out why I have this strange ghosting on the top of my screen.....

Samsung Galaxy S2 Power Button Not Working
Hi Guys,
Any solution for the power button problem? Current latest Android 2.3.3 Samsung Galaxy S2 also having the same power button problem. Most of the time I can't use my power button to turn on/off the screen (wake/sleep) and there's no menu for long tap as well. Luckily it does wake when i press the only physical Samsung center button.
What i have already tried: Factory Reset, disable Power Saving Mode, Spare Part+ (apps), Screen Off and Lock (apps), and all won't help.
Is there any current updates or patches to allow the power button to work as usual?
Thank you.

Safe mode in Android - what to do if you see that label on your screen

Today I accidently entered Safe Mode on my ICS 4.04 Haipai i9200 phone and a user in our thread knew that most Android phones have this feature. Here is what I wrote and it applies to most Android phone systems. If you see the words, "Safe mode" in the lower left corner of their phone and or experiencing boot loop due to force closure. Here is what I wrote:
robarnold is right about Safe Mode and the article he posted (which is now linked in my quoted reply) provides more information about Safe Mode. Please see the attached picture to see what Safe Mode looks like on our phones. If your phone were to enter Safe Mode, those words would appear on all your screens. As per the article, most if not all your apps will be suspended or not work.
Basically there are two known ways to enter Safe Mode:
1. Android detects a problem with a newly installed app and force-closes it while entering into Safe Mode.
2. A combination of key presses at power application;
Newly installed app force-closes the system
The gist of the article provided by Rob says that if a newly installed app causes system conflicts, Android will force close that app to prevent it from possibly doing malicious harm. At the same time, Android will suspend the majority of all other apps and display "Safe mode" in the lower left corner of your phone as per the picture.
The reason for this is to provide the user an opportunity to clean the system of the app which is causing the force closure. Chances are it the most recent app installed but it could be a combination of apps that are coming into conflict with one another.
If you suspect a newly installed app of causing this problem and you see Safe Mode on screen, STOP, COLLECT YOUR WITS and BREATHE NORMALLY. You have several options.
SAFE MODE OPTIONS
1. Press the System or Menu Button in the lower left corner and navigate to Manage apps.
2. Find the most recent app you installed.
3. Force close it.
4. Disable it if possible.
5. Remove this app.
6. Reboot the boot to see if the Safe mode is gone.
If the Safe mode label is still present, the article suggests that it may be necessary to press several keys to achieve the removal of the Safe mode label and its effect of suspending the other apps. In essence, we now move to the second discussion of entry into Safe mode:
1. Safe mode can be entered by pressing buttons at start-up. Most likely, this is what I did today as I was getting ready to leave for an appointment. The Safe Mode label freaked me out and when I could use the Rebooter app or any other app, I became scared.
2. I don't know exactly which buttons I pressed but it mostly likely was the System and Home (center big button) and maybe even the Escape/Back button on the right. My phone slipped slightly as I turned it on and my left thumb was flying as I manuevered my left hand to balance the phone.
3. The right combination of buttons, which supposedly are the same to enter Safe Mode, are the same to exit Safe Mode.
4. If you are certain you entered Safe Mode by accident - meaning you know you did not recently or just now installed an app that force closed Android, then you just have to find the combo to exit it.
5. The article suggests that pressing the volume buttons might clear the Safe Mode on the first reboot after initial entry into Safe Mode.
6. If the Safe Mode label disappears after pressing the volume buttons, your phone is okay.
7. If the label is still present, try rebooting the phone again.
The article suggests as per my experience that if you cannot clear the Safe Mode, your last resort is to do a factory reset of the phone. Fortunately in my case, I had ClockworkMod Recovery available and restored my system via a backup recovery.
ronbo's Final Thoughts
Hope I never see Safe Mode again (and, I won't go looking for it) but I recommend you learn how to do a Factory Reset by pressing and holding the Volume Down Button with a simultaneous press of the Power Button. You want to see the Factory Test and Reset Menu when you are calm. TRUST ME ON THAT!

Hi,
Yes safe mode exists and is a useful if not essential tool for those of who like to experiment with their Android devices.
I'd suggest that it will always be worthwhile to know how to access Safe Mode and recover from it if you are going to install unsigned apps.

Safe Mode = Wet Phone
Just a quick note for anyone who runs into the variation of this problem that I had today.
Using my Nexus S today in the rain. Phone got wet. Specifically, damp got into both the Power button and the Volume rocker.
The result was when the phone was restarted (after I removed the battery and dried it out) it came up in Safe Mode.
Which is how I wound up here.
(Minor site quibble: in the course of registering here and making this ONE post, I've been subjected to FOUR captchas. I like sharing information, but this is really WAY more nuisance than is worth it for me.)

A work-around for phones stuck in safe mode due to water damage etc but that seem to work fine otherwise is to convert the (trusted) apps you need from data apps to system apps (move the .apk from /data/app to /system/app after installing via the Play Store). You may need to use Mounts2Sd or something similar with an sd-ext partition if you don't have enough space in your internal /system partition for all the apps you need. (With Mounts2Sd, placing the apps in /data/app-system on the sd-ext partition will fool the phone into thinking the apps are in /system/app and you can then use them in safe mode). If anybody is aware of a simpler script that does the same thing, please lmk.
If this helps you, please hit the Thanks button.

got the same problem with my lenovo a859. it got wet and now just boots into recovery where i can not choose any other options besides the first (reboot system now). Is there any way to start the phone/ do a factory reset?
I have a parental control program on my kids phone.
Safe mode of course enables to erase it.
Is it a way on a rooted android to disable it?
Turn off safe mode
Yes, safe mode does exist. It is the default mode in your android phone without extra apps installed. When in safe mode you cannot use your favourite apps. I understand it can get irritating some times.
You can try rebooting your phone. It worked for me.

Capacitive Buttons not Working

I have the Verizon variant of the Galaxy S6
A few different times now the capacitive buttons stopped working. They don't light up, they don't work, and there is no haptic feedback from them. It always happens after a restart, but not the first restart.
I have tried factory reset and that didn't work. I had to flash my phone using Verizon's repair assistant to fix the problem.
The second time it happened I thought it was due to installing that Galaxy Lights app everyone is talking about. I booted into safe mode, uninstalled the app and restarted. Once I did it worked for a few more days before it happened again. I did a full repair to fix it.
A few minutes ago it happened again. This time I haven't installed that app or any other apps that would affect the buttons. I am rooted with Ping Pong but I haven't done anything other than remove a few bloatware items and use Titanium Backup.
Any suggestions? I'm desperate to find the problem and a solution so I don't have to keep resetting my phone. Thanks!
So, I booted into safe mode and the buttons were working fine. I didn't do anything and restarted into normal boot mode. Now the buttons are working just fine. We'll see what happens in the next few days if it reaccures.
Has anyone else had similar problems with them stop working?
Problem Again
I rebooted my phone and the buttons stopped working again. Booting into safe mode doesn't fix the problem.
I haven't installed any apps recently and no apps at all that would have an impact on the soft keys. I have a small hunch it may be caused by having a handful of apps open as i restart.
Any special resets or things I should try to get my soft keys working again?
This just happened to me today.
Galaxy S6, VZW.
Buttons were working just fine, and then suddenly stopped working as I was using the phone.
I had noticed a strange screen briefly that looked like the task manager but had no "close all" at the bottom, but I dismissed it and then shortly thereafter the buttons seemed to just stop working.
Haven't tried a safe mode boot yet. Will do that shortly.
If this is going to become a recurring thing, I'm sad.

Nope. No dice. Soft buttons (capacitive) not working at all (not lighting up at all either - even at boot).
Any ideas?
That sucks
Try uninstalling any recent apps that might affect haptic feedback, display settings, etc while in safe mode.
Otherwise you'll have to flash using Verizon recovery software. It'll install itself once you connect your phone to your PC. This will completely reset your phone so be sure to backup.
If you don't want to do all that just use "Handy Soft Keys"
It'll make a floating widget with the soft keys. I ultimately had to do a warranty exchange with VErizon.
I've had the same thing happen to me. Capacitive buttons just stopped working after having the phone for a week.
I've tried rebooting, running the battery down to 0, rebooting to safe mode. Nothing seems to work.
I've enabled the "tablet software buttons" (qemu.hw.mainkeys=0) in the interface so I can still use it for now, was hoping they'd magically start working again so I don't have to get a warranty (refurb) replacement.

Good!!! Better than getting a faulty device. Hopefully it can be fixed soon!
Mine froze and went to black screen after i downloaded and applied new theme. And when i press the home button i can feel the haptic feedback. I tried charging the phobe but there was no light too. I just perform a hard reset with the power + volume down keys.

well... just did it. iris unlock, and then I got a reset and power button wasn't turning it on for a minute.

Yep
Hello, No issues on my S8+ from Tmobile.
Do you have a theme installed that maybe is causing the delay?
I learned from other posts from xda, when doing a factory reset, do NOT perform a backup and restore for apps. This causes some delays in response from the phone. Is better always to install fresh the apps from the app store and then just log in.
I also recommend enabling the developer options and disable all three animations to off. This will speed the phone response.

Simultaneously press Volume down+power then quickly release them, do not hold them. Also, try rebooting the device then attempt a screenshot, random software inconsistencies could be causing it to not work correctly, rebooting would clear the inconsistencies. Another possiblity is you could have some cached data causing a conflict somewhere, booting into recovery and wiping only the cache partition(DO NOT FACTORY RESET) should clear that issue.
