So I read the above thread, for the Nexus 5 and I am honestly confused. How do I flash a stock rom without being rooted in the first place? Don't you have to be rooted to have TWRP installed on your device? Cause I am interested installing Preview 2, fully stocked, but I'm confused how to achieve this, so if someone could share a method on how to do this via a Mac, id appreciate it.

The only thing needed to install another ROM is a custom recovery. Users can flash ROMs as they please without having root. Root is only required initially for most devices to unlock bootloaders or the equivalent, which is only necessary to allow users to install a custom recovery.

Thank you for your reply. If this is a reference to my bad English and miscommunication of specific terms, I'm sorry. If there's more to it, no, my phone is not in English. Why?

Because on previous preview releases changing the phones language has caused things to malfunction/force close. Try set your phone to English (hopefully you understand well enough to navigate the menus) and see if data still closes on you

You'll just have to wait for official release for it fixed (i assume they're not bothered because they're American and only need it working in English to develop it)

It doesn't bother me actually, just I didn't thought that could be an issue keeping my language (for some reasons, I thought that the developer preview came only in English and I was quite surprised when it suggested me Italian after unlocking the SIM).
Thank you again.

Dirty flashing while not clearing caches, or trying to install SuperSU on stock kernel will ends up in a boot loop

You probably wiped your recovery with stock one in fastboot. You can just re-use fastboot to install TWRP over stock.

Android Auto Map Permissions?
There can't be many people on Preview 3 who use Android Auto, but I'll throw it out there...anyone else running into an issue with navigation in Android Auto complaining about location permissions? It suggests granting Maps the location permission, which of course it has. I can navigate fine directly from the Maps app, but in AA I just get the screen with that error.

Anyone else having problems with 6.0.1
I can't get root to work.
I dirty flashed 6.0.1 acoording to instruktions, reboot installs elemental x kernel reboot and tries to install supersu 2.5.2. But it gets stuck att the boot animation.
I tried re flashing 6.0.1 again and install the kernel provided by stephan but twrp can't install the zip, I get a update failed.
Anyone hav any tips on how to root 6.0.1 preferably without wiping the the phone. Should I flash 2.6.2? But the instructions for that means that I need to wipe and reflash?

[Q] TF300 and ME301t compatibility

Hi,
first id like to apologize for posting in here, but it seems sort of related to me.
Since me301t and tf300 (as far as i know) have the same guts, would it be possible to safely use rooting methods/roms from tf300 on me301? Thanks

I've been wondering the same thing. I PM'd a dev from the TF300 root method to see if there is any chance of getting the ME301T rooted and unlocked. Here's hoping!

Maybe off-topic but what is the difference besides the ME301T is newer, lighter but thicker and does not have keyboard capability? I am really trying to choose! Hope someone can help me!

this bootloader MUST BE UNLOCKED.
WE NEED CWM or TWRP. Once that is enabled, CM10.1 will come, which we need badly

YES! IT IS ABSOLUTELY POSSIBLE. We just need someone who is kind enough to do it for us, and unject TWRP or CWM like on the transformer series
hello,
the app to unlock the bootloader in tf300 works in me301.
I managed to install TWRP with the 4.2 bootloader and works fine. This allows playground to experimentation.
Roms and kernels works as well, but I only tried 3 of them.
Hope this helps

Unlocked bootloader and installed TWRP, I first installed the wrong version of TWRP which had no touch input and had to force a reboot, this is the one that works for me:
http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/tf300t/openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-tf300t-4.2.blob
Thanks for being a good test bunny for me
Backing up my Smart Tab now and will see if any of the roms work.
*Update*
Tested the CM 10.1 experimental and the CROMi-Xenogenesus 4.4.1.
CM 10.1 boots and all but touch input is weird, the "Show touches circle" is persistent and input is like using a mouse; I have to drag the circle around and double click for a single click. I tried the latest two versions and had the same issues.
CROMi boots and doesn't suffer from the touch weirdness, but WiFi and Bluetooth are not working. I suspect if I were to pull libs from the ME301T stock I will be able to get them to work in this rom but I'm done testing for now.

I got my device to unlock!
But I followed the instructions for installing the TWRP blob file, but cannot seem to get my device to boot into recovery.
Down volume +power brings up the stock bootloader
Edit: Fixed it, looks like the dd command didn't take. Did it again and viola, DONE!
Edit2: I tried Paranoid Android, it boot loops. Just FYI, I may try unpacking it and changing the system files to match our me301t and see if I can get it to work.

PA won't work because it's based on the old kernel/bootloader (pre 4.2). One of the devs made a version that works a couple weeks back but he hasn't posted it.

I want to start building some CM10.1 and other TF300 ports. But I cannot seem to find out how to get a system dump that is needed for the porting. I can copy /system to my computer, but it seems like there should be more needed than just pulling that in order to do a proper port.
Maybe it is just a matter of copying /system for the needed dump, but if anyone can shed some light on that for me it'd be a great help!
To simplify this process for everyone I wrapped up all the the necessary tools, images, drivers, etc for getting your ME301T unlocked in a single rar file. This works as of 5-13-2013, I'll update it as needed when people report problems with any of the included stuff.
I cannot stress enough that I am not personally responsible for any of this work, I simply combined it for simplicity. Please follow the links below to thank the dev's that did all of the hard work for their time!
The rar file contains:
*Contains drivers for ME301T for Windows (From Asus)
*Contains motochopper, root solution for ME301T (from djrbliss, http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/15208-root-motochopper-yet-another-android-root-exploit-412/)
*Contains necessary files and brief instructions for bootloader unlock (from philos64, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1697227)
*Contains boot image for TWRP (from eyeballer, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672108)
Again please thank the original devs!
The link for the rar file is:

Edit: Updated 6-10-2013 as the previous link was not working.

This root method was patched before it was even released...so if you want to keep root be sure not to take any ota/security updates until methods to gain root on newer firmware's are found...works for now but future updates will put us right back to square 1

i just did this on my new KK g2, already had 4.4.2 on it when i got it friday and i asked this question in another thread, but didnt get a response. so this method of rooting will not keep us from getting future OTAs but will more than likely loose root, is that what you are saying? and that this method may not work on say 4.4.3 or 4.4.4 (which just hit the nexus 5)?

Thanks for posting this. I've gone through a long drawn out process trying to install a custom recovery on my d801 G2. I tried flashify, twrp installer, freegee, nothing worked for my phone. Have had to revert back to stock multiple times because my phone wouldn't function properly. I'm typically pretty good with rooting, and this g2 has had my quite frustrated =P Just wanted to double check that this would in fact work with no issues on a 4.4.2 d801 phone. Would love some feedback from others! Thanks

I noticed that some of you worry about an update while being rooted. If you are rooted more than likely there will be a rooted version of your rom to flash via recovery. Dont worry about an update as long as you can flash an updated rooted rom.

I thought this would be easy and it probably is, but I'm getting a little nervous because I'm new to all of this.
I haven't even flashed the firmware because I'm waiting for my SD card but what is the problem with the red letters? Is that something I should be concerned about?

GPS won't lock after I updated to 4.4.4 using RKDN Rom. I use GPS fix deluxe from the Play Store which usually locks right away. I flashed back to clean rom 4.4. 3 and I got a lock right away. Anyone else having an issue with this?

Radio Version?
I flashed the 4.4.3 radios then the 4.4.3 OS via TWRP. Today I Flashed the 4.4.4 radios the 4.4.4 OS via TWRP. my phone says its radio 1.09.20.0926 I see that everyone else has 0.89 radios who flashed 4.4.4 radios. I'm not sure which radios I flashed incorrectly if someone can help with this issue I would appreciate it.

If you used CF Auto Root to root and then install Philz (for recovery purposes, not rooting) you should be fine.
I can't recommend another root solution because I haven't tested it.
flashed the sprint full restore been running it for about four hours now and it runs smooth everything opens so far camera works ,flashed cf auto root from the post link and got a full system fail
i reflashed rom in oden
love so far ,,,,,great work dog keep up the good work!!

I don't yet, even my go-to app (https://sites.google.com/site/wifitetherrouter/home) is not working on defaults.
The majority of apps/mods will have to be updated to run on the new platform being that it's so new. Hopefully the Hotspot mod will be sooner than later

followed the instructions as followed. I wiped with phil 2x, loaded stock nk4 rom, then odin 3.07 this release, I got a pass in odin however my phone is displaying Recovery Booting on the samsung galaxy s5 screen and will not move... I think it may have bricked the device. I cannot get it to boot to download mode either..... Is there hope or should I visit the sprint store

I find that complicated unless you have a Lilli pop kernel. Good luck though not doubting you. If there was a kernel source I would at least get it booting on note 3 I'm sure

Moto G 3rd Gen custom ROM newbie help?

Hi xda-developers,
I just received my new Moto G 2015 in the mail. I did some research and figured I want to replace my Android 5.1.1 with Cyanogenmod. I turn 67 in a month and always thought myself to be rather sharp, but I am entirely new to the world of smart phones and the guides I have found are very confusing, telling me to unlock my bootloading, root, TWRP, backup, etc. I noticed Cyanogenmod also does not officially support this Moto G 2015. Should I wait for when it does? If not, could one of you terrific developers outline for me what I have to do to install unofficial Cyanogenmod on my phone? Thank you kindly.
Hi, here is an unofficial port of cyanogenmod.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=62245522
Your bootloader must be unlocked in order to flash custom recovery, then you use custom recovery to flash ROM and gapps package.
I'll update this post momentarily with guides for each.
Rooting isn't a must as most custom ROMs will tell you if it isn't rooted same with TWRP and TWRP which is a custom recovery will install root if it isn't detected.
Follow this link to a post with guides.

Cheers and if you need more help just ask.

Thank you for the help christopherrrg! Sorry to be a bother but I have more questions:
* My son tells me Motorola will normally send updates to me automatically over the air. Does Cyanogenmod do the same thing?
* I already downloaded some applications on my phone like Shazam and AccuWeather. When I install Cyanogenmod, will they still be there? How about when I install updates?
Thank you very much for explaining.
Hi! The answer is no to both questions. To avoid conflicts is better to full wipe your phone. Full wipe means the cleaning of /system and /data partitions. But your images and files you have won't be affected. Only the apps installed.
You need to download the updates from the post or from cyanogenmod site when officially supported. Installing updates won't affect apps and data.

Well your son is correct, however I believe he means while you leave device remaining on stock software ie. What it was shipped with. Yes cyanogenmod does do the same thing on OFFICAL maintained devices, because the moto g3 is fairly new the dev scene for this device is slowly speeding up and only maintained UNOFFICIALLY at the moment. (We could have an official port in the future.)
So unfortunately unless the dev states in the ROM description that it supports OTA (it can be implemented by developer) I'm afraid you will have to manually flash any updates. Which is easy and doesn't affect apps.
Now if you're changing from stock ROM I would backup your contacts as you will lose everything when installing a custom ROM. (You will only lose such as unlocking bootloader wipes the whole device.) As for any apps, if you have home WiFi just reinstall from play store instead of trying to back them up. You will have less problems that way as everyone insists on backing up. (I'm apologizing to you guys with the slow ISP though lol)
So anything afterwards should be okay!
Edit - you may not want to venture too far from stock if you're ever worried about warranty purposes.

He said he was fairly new to the scene so I didn't want to confuse him with any partition info just yet.
But yes, full wipe is recommended for new ROMs or first custom.
Any updates can be dirty flashed. Dirty flash meaning without worry of losing data.

I think I am beginning to understand, but I have but more questions my friend. Since Cyanogen is not officially supported yet, do you recommend that I first unlock my bootloading and TWRP then wait for the official version?
Or if I install the unofficial version, will I have to fully wipe before installing an official version? And if I fully wipe, does that mean I have to install again my applications? Thank you very much Christopher and Nelson.

That would be entirely personal preference, I'm currently running TipsyOS found in the android development section for our device and I'm quite satisfied. Normally a full wipe would be recommended after switching to official. Also yes, anytime you change ROM you will need to reinstall apps. However when you update the same ROM to say a later dated revision then you don't need to wipe you just install over it and your apps automatically optimize. TWRP isn't official either but a dev did a great job porting it over for us, you can also find that lurking within one of the moto g XDA forums.
The only downside I have noticed so far is moto display isn't implemented in many custom ROMs besides 'Rapture' but sadly the dev doesn't own the device anymore.
& no problem! Ask away, we all share!

One more thing I'd like to mention, Motorola doesn't send the updates out to you your carrier does. Motorola provides the updates to you carrier and it's up to them to send out the update. You may find some carriers send out updates quickly and some slowly or possibly not at all. The carrier needs to be able to support an update before they send it out.
I'm not sure why you're in a hurry to jump from the stock rom. I'm finding stock very stable with excellent battery life. I would think you would want to root, then debloat stock before jumping to CM.

The reason is my son tells me Cyanogenmod is much more able to being customized. How do I debloat stock? Also unrelated, but is there any way to backup my applications if I ever fully wipe my phone? Thank you all!

Yup your son is correct. Yes, when you're rooted there are several apps that can backup your apps and data.
Personally myself I paid for 'Root Explorer' and use that to manually remove apps from /system/app because I love doing everything....... manually lol
You can find several free file explorers on the play store as well.

Congratulations! Nope! Just make sure to use fastboot commands to send over the new recovery, and you should be all set. TWRP will root you automatically too.

If you do decide to install twrp, it is highly recommended that you make a backup before moving any further, as it can restore your device to it's previous state, in case anything goes wrong or you fowl up some place down the road in your journey

Hi shadie, correct me if I am wrong, but how do I back up my phone? I thought I need to be rooted to make a back up and since TWRP is how to root the phone, how do I backup before installing TWRP? Thank you kindly.
You use twrp to make the backup, and since your device is a Moto G3 (2015) you can download a copy of your stock firmware here on the site (so actually you will have two backups, a full device backup, and a backup on the device it self).
You can contact me on hangouts if you would like and i can walk you through the steps personally or one of my few buddy's in my group chat can assist you.
