Anyone having sync issues with yahoo mail on gmail app? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Rather than using the yahoo mail app i simply use gmail to access my yahoo account, but for the last few weeks it hasn't been syncing.
I delete the account and re add it and it works for a day but then it stops syncing, i delete the account again and add it and it works for another day but then it stops. Any idea what the issue could be? Is yahoo neutering anyone that isn't using their app to check mail?

All the time. It's been like this for months.

Surely yahoo has been scrambling to fix this issue... no?

Experience this since the July 16 update. Before this, gmail doesn't support 2-step verification for Yahoo and you need to generate a password from Yahoo's setting. Now it supports 2-step verification, but the issue persists just like what @peachpuff mentioned

Gmail and Exchange push together in one app

Not sure if this is common knowledge or not, but one of the things that has been frustrating me the most about my first Android phone is that I seemingly needed to use both the Gmail app and the HTC Mail app in order to achieve push email for both my gmail account and my exchange account from work.
After searching I found that this is a problem with the Evo's implementation because of the limitation of HTC Mail only allowing one exchange account (and exchange accounts are the only that can use push in HTC Mail) and Gmail app only allowing, well Gmail of course.
Then I found the apk for the stock android email application. I read that this would allow for multiple exchange accounts to be setup, which obviously means Exchange will work with it, but then I can also setup my Gmail as an exchange account, and get push for both.
Thanks to rhedgehog for providing the apk here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=676069
And here is the information on setting up your gmail account through exchange:
username: [your full email i.e. [email protected]]
password: [your gmail password]
server: m.google.com
ssl: yes
accept certs: yes (not really sure this needed, but I checked it)
There are some caveats to this. Through the stock email, it only presents you with the option of syncing email and contacts. Due to this, I still setup my Google account through the phone's settings interface and had the Google account only syn calendar. I did the same for my work and setup an Activesync Exchange account to just sync calendar. In the end up, I have under settings > accounts, I have two "Corporate" accounts syncing only email/contacts, one Activesync Exchange syncing only calendar, and one Google account syncing only calendar. I am not sure if this affects battery life, but being that they are all using push, I don't see how this setup would use any more life that just two push accounts doing all three (calendar, contacts, and email). Email and contacts I have run through the email's exchange account.
The other issue I have with this setup is that I have not found a widget yet that integrates with the stock email client. So far all that I have seen intergrate with Gmail app, HTC Mail app, K9, Touchdown, but not the stock email app. Also I heard this client doesn't work with attachments, but this hasn't presented a huge problem for me yet.
Anyway, hope this helps someone. I know I was just really annoyed by having to use to different applications for my emails. There is even the combined inbox or separate inboxes to view so that it satisfies those like me that want it all together, versus those who want to view them separately.

Push E-Mail

Hello,
This is my first Android phone after using the iPhone. I added all my Gmail accounts to the email app from Samsung, and I'm still not getting push email. It's set at IMAP and everything. Do I need to set it up as an exchange account?
Thanks.
you need to use the gmail app for gmail to push as far as i know If you only use Gmail, you can remove the email app from that bottom dock by going to the applications screen and hitting menu there is a setting to arrange via grid and then rearrange apps and you can drag the gmail app down there and remove the email app

Thanks for the quick reply. That slightly is disappointing since the Samsung email app has an universal inbox where as the Gmail email app doesn't. Is there an app that would help with this issue if I were to root the phone?
I apologize in advanced if I sound stupid or don't make any sense. I'm still checking up with all the Android lingo
How would I go about adding a non gmail and a non exchange account? Would the Gmail app support that? Or would I have to use the Samsung email app for that?
Thanks.

The Gmail app only supports gmail accounts I believe. You either have to use the Samsung email app or forward your emails from your other accounts to gmail.
Another suggestion is to use K-9 Mail. I have my Gmail, AOL, and Hotmail accounts added to the K-9 Mail and Gmail and AOL both give me push emails and I have Hotmail set up for polling every hour.
K-9 seems to be the best alternative because I didn't want to forward all my emails to Gmail and the Samsung email app wasn't pushing my emails like I wanted.
If the samsung email app supports exchange active sync, you can use it to get gmail and it'll push. Gmail now fully supports active sync. I had my iphone set up that way and I got push emails from Gmail no problem.
The Google Gmail website shows you how to set up Gmail as if it were an exchange active sync account. Its really simple and worked great for me for over a year. I have the Captivate now and only use the Gmail app, but I only have one Gmail account, not multiple ones like the OP.

That's exactly what I'm looking. That works out perfect. Thanks again! And if I ever want to sync my contacts and calendar with Gmail, I can always turn off sync for mail but keep sync active for contacts and calendar.
Thanks again.

Gmail and email

Yea it seems gmail never fails to give me my email notifications right on time, right when I receive mail I get a notification no more then 2 minutes later. But yahoo seems to never update and I get my email like 30 min to a hour later. So this must be droid telling me if I don't have gmail I won't get my notifications on time. Very bias of the android OS. And it sends nobody has a sure
fix for thus as I have searched the forums and have used k9 as well it all fails.

Both GMail and Exchange mail support the feature called Push Email -- it pushes into your phone's inbox as soon as the mail server receives the email.
How do you setup your Yahoo email? I guess you used the POP3 email access which is pretty dumb and doesn't support push email (your phone has to check the mail server every so often to see if there is mail there.
There should be a Yahoo mail app created by Yahoo that also supports push email. You have to use that app in order to get the push email from Yahoo.
Hotmail now also supports push email via Exchange email support. So, no new email app needed.
I have one of my yahoo accounts set up on the yahoo app, but it only allows for one account as far as I know

Then, call Yahoo and ask them to support multiple accounts. Yahoo, Gmail and hotmail all use properitary protocols for their email in addition to support the old POP3 protocol. Gmail and Hotmail have the added advantage of supporting Exchange ActiveSync. So, in order to take advantage of advanced feature like push email, you will need the native client from the respective email provider or use Exchange ActiveSync if there is support for it. It is not any kind of bais in Andriod OS. It is the fault of Yahoo falling way behind the technology curve. POP3 protocol is created like 20 to 30 years ago. Back then, emails often take days to reach the destination.
BTW, the phone's built-in email client only supports 2 Exchange accounts max. I know Gmail client supports multiple gmail accounts as well but not sure how many accounts it can support.
Yahoo does have an app, whether it's any good is a different story. I have tried both, the email app and the messenger app and they are very laggy, almost rendering the phone useless. Then again ymmv

[Q] How can I delete the Gmail Client on Transformer

Hi
I just got my transformer and realize that there are 2 email client in it. The Gmail and the default. I just wondering if it is possible for me to delete the Gmail client. I want to keep the system email client since it got a widget. I don't want the other Gmail Client to be working, but somehow I cant delete it and whenever I link my transformer to my gmail, that Gmail client will be linked too. Thank you all for helping.
You need to be rooted, then you can delete, or better move to another directory, the Gmail.apk that is in /system/app/.
Just turn off notifications and sync for the Gmail app. Don't have to delete it just don't use it
Why bother deleting it when you can just deselect mail and contact sync when you connect your google account?

Hi! you can deactivate the sync in the settings->accounts and sync.
the gmail client also has a widget. it also supports push email with gmail accounts. if your email is gmail, then it's definitely the better client.
if you have have other email services, i'd recommend you setup your gmail accounts to fetch them, and it would also work nicely with the gmail client.

This, if anything go the other direction and remove the other email client. Gmail is push, meaning it doesnt require a sync interval and doesnt have to constantly check. When email is ready it just shows up, far more efficient.

Multiple Accounts and Messengers

Is there any way to have multiple accounts with access to messenger on both of those accounts i cannot seem to get it to work ?
Natively, nop. Just one. You can still use IM+ if version 1.2 (I guess), which still have support to MSN. Non sense from MS force them to remove it. Some people have more than one account.
To clarify that a bit, since I'm considering a Lumia 800. Can the 1 account I'll be using for messenger be a different one from the one I used to sync the phone? I never intend to use the latter one on MSN.
Explain it a bit more:
I have a hotmail and a gmail account.
Gmail is my XboxLive, GFWL, FB, twitter etc. and my main mail account but it's not the one I use for MSN Messenger.
Hotmail is the one I'm using for MSN Messenger.
So I take it I can log to MSN Messenger only from the Gmail one? Don't want to have them both for MSN, just the hotmail account, while having the Gmail as my main "phone" account.
In your case you could not use messenger if you associate your gmail as the main account on the device.
Thanks for the reply.
Is it possible to do the opposite as a workaround?
What I mean is, using the example from my previous post, sync the phone with the Hotmail account to have my MSN messenger online and then use the Gmail as secondary e-mail account, account used in XBOXLive etc.
Besides MSN are the rest of the features only available to the main e-mail account?
