I am one of those people that appreciate minimalism, so I would like to have a completely empty homescreen with no icons whatsoever. But I would like to be able to open the app drawer (A third party app drawer downloaded from the GP Store called Quad Drawer) simply by pressing the home button on my AT&T Galaxy S3. I have Cyanogenmod 10.2, and in system settings it does allow a few unique actions to be set for the home button, but none that allow the launching of a specific app (Quad Drawer). I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to make the phone allow me to set a specific app to launch when a hardware key is pressed.
Thank you for your time.

Hi,
I am also one of those people who wants to have no icons on homescreen )
Try this solution:
- install External Keyboard Helper https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelperdemo
- in advanced settings, set application shortcut (A0) to the specific app (Quad Drawer)
- in advanced settings, remap your key to 0x2410 (= aplication registered under A0)
- HOME button is a special key, it is difficult (probably impossible) to remap it using External Keyboard Helper. If you really want to remap it completely, you need to edit keylayouts in /system/usr/keylayout Editing keylayouts, you can change the behaviour of the HOME button to something else, for example CALL Then you can remap this new CALL button to 0x2410 using External Keyboard Helper.

is there a way to do so without making custom image
just look for apps like Tasker, MacroDroid, Automate, ...
edit: btw you can select the default launcher from Settings - Apps - Configure apps - Home App
Tasker would be a good option...

is there any other method to do so??
in shell script you can watch the keys in a loop (toolbox getevent -il) and perform an action on event (am start -n <pkgname>)
I have seen several threads related to this subject, however most of them just have files and no explanation about issues and how to solve them in a single OP. This is the only reason why I'm posting this. Anyway, on to the good stuff.

F.A.Q.
0.1 Before replacing/modifying/deleting/uninstalling anything, I strongly advise that you make a backup of the original should anything go wrong. You have been warned!
0.2 This is not a Recovery Zip, it's meant for you to get only what you need. All you need is ROOT.
1. Something is not working / It keeps telling me that I have to update Google Play Services:
This means that you haven't installed PrebuiltGmsCore.apk that's included in this package. It's a newer version of Google Play Services that's required for several of the apps to work. I highly recommend installing it before installing anything else.
2. Google Search / Google Now keeps crashing:
You must copy the following file from the included /system/lib folder to /system/lib in your device:
Code:
libgoogle_recognizer_jni_l.so
.
Make sure that permissions are set to 644.
You'll need a file explorer app with root features. I personally use File Explorer with the Root Addon as it makes it extra easy to move things around since it has a dual panel feature and also allows you to change permissions.
Also, for the launcher to work properly, you need at least the following installed, in this order:
Code:
Google Play Services - PrebuiltGmsCore.apk
Google Search - Velvet.apk
Google Home - GoogleHome.apk
3. Ok Google Feature doesn't seem to work:
First, make sure you've done all the above steps to ensure that everything else for the Launcher/Google now is working.
Then, from the homescreen:
Menu > Settings > Voice > Offline Speech Recognition > Update if possible or Uninstall and Re-install the English (US) file.
4. Photosphere is not working in the camera app:
You must copy the following files from the included /system/lib folder to /system/lib in your device:
Code:
libjni_filtershow_filters.so
libjni_mosaic.so
liblightcycle.so
Make sure that permissions are set to 644 on all those files.
You'll need a file explorer app with root features. I personally use File Explorer with the Root Addon as it makes it extra easy to move things around since it has a dual panel feature and also allows you to change permissions.
5.Google Hangouts force closes when video calling:
You must copy the following file from the included /system/lib folder to /system/lib in your device:
Code:
libvideochat_jni.so
Make sure that permissions are set to 644 on all that file.
You'll need a file explorer app with root features. I personally use File Explorer with the Root Addon as it makes it extra easy to move things around since it has a dual panel feature and also allows you to change permissions.
6. I cannot install Maps.apk:
You'll have to uninstall your current Maps in order to be able to install the new one. I'm not sure why it is that this is the only app that cannot be updated, but that seems to be the case. I suggest backing up the original APK first with an app such as Titanium Backup and then uninstall Maps, also using Titanium Backup. Once uninstalled, proceed to uninstall the new APK and all should be fine. You may have to restart the device after uninstalling the old Maps, though I personally didn't have to.
7. How do I make the launcher icons smaller?
In order to make them smaller you have to use Xposed Framework + Xposed App Settings to lower the DPI on the launcher.
You can get the latest Xposed Framework HERE. If you don't know what Xposed Framework is, please take a look at this post HERE.
Follow the instructions in the link above to get Xposed Framework installed. Once everything is done, open Xposed Framework go to Downloads and install App Settings.
After done installing, go back to Xposed Framework > Modules, and enable App Settings.
Reboot your Device.
Once Done rebooting, open App Settings and select Google Seach (the blue icon) Thanks to bakercj for clarifying this one.
Turn it on and change the DPI
400 DPI = 6 icons in the dock and App Drawer Grid 5x6
320 DPI = 7 icons in the dock and App Drawer Grid 6x7
Make sure to tell it to save, and then go back to the home screen. If it didn't take effect, reboot your device.
8. How do I add more home screens?
Home screens are added automatically when you try to add a widget/shortcut and slide your finger to the right of the screen while holding the new content.
9. Google Now does not show up when I swipe left on the launcher:
Press menu in the launcher's homescreen > Go to Settings > Enable Google Now.
Look at the screenshots for more guidance.
10. Google Chrome doesn't work properly:
You must copy the following file from the included /system/lib folder to /system/lib in your device:
Code:
libchromeview.so
Make sure that permissions are set to 644 on all that file.
You'll need a file explorer app with root features. I personally use File Explorer with the Root Addon as it makes it extra easy to move things around since it has a dual panel feature and also allows you to change permissions.

Google KitKat Apps - 20111102183429
Re-Added Velvet.apk (Sorry for taking it out at some point)
Added Chrome (as well as needed lib for chrome)
Google KitKat Apps - 20131102211608
After wiping my device and starting from scratch I have finally confirmed that copying updated libvideochat_jni.so to /system/lib fixes video chat in hangout, therefore I added it to the zip. Make sure not to use any Xposed Module that affects hangouts as I believe that's what caused mine to stop working.
Thanks, man

Any screeny of the calendar widget? Thats the only thing I always found ugly, if they changed the look that is.
Thanks!! Was reading through, I saw that you needed Google search for the launcher, however I didn't see that as one of the apk's, does that mean the current version will suffice?

Is there any way to just shrink the icons in the drawer grid? I don't want 6 or 7 icons in my dock.
Hey,
Nice post.
But where can i find the new kitkat phone apk?
Or the rest of the updated files?
Thanks
I'm not sure what it is, but after trying this, my Google Play Services keeps force closing and doesn't appear to keep it's updated status after I reboot the phone.

Not as far as I know, once you change the DPI for the Google Search it will change for everything in the entire launcher, and since the launcher itself doesn't have an option for changing it I don't think it's possible without hacking the app, which is beyond my knowledge.

You must've done something wrong. It's the first time I heard of anything like this happening.
I fixed it by reinstalling my ROM, then installing the Google Framework, then search, then Google Home. After copying the files to system/lib, I changed the permissions to 644.
I changed DPI to 420 and now its perfect, 5 icons in dock,5 icons in drawer

I have this problem too. Every time I flash the updated apk, the phone freezes. After a reboot it reset to version 3. I even tried deleting it all together to no avail.

Thanks your guide has been very helpful I have every thing working except for Google Keep, it opens and asks "Choose an account" when I choose my google account the app goes blank and after about 30 seconds I get an "unfortunately, keep has stopped." message. Did you have to do anything special to get keep to work?
Resolved Google Keep force close problem, I had Xprivacy installed and it was causing Keep to FC, once I turned Xprivacy off Google Keep works
I really want the new Google Now. Looks really good. I'm at work, lil busy, but going to attempt this anyway.

Older Sdk
Please what is the error "Older SDK' I get with map and google dialer and couple other installation?
how come my icons is still TW like(phone, messages, camera, battery on status bar, etc..) after installing google kitkat launcher
While using the stock rom...
1. Can I get a "Reboot" option on shutdown menu?
2. Possible to rearrange or even change the "Back, Home, Recent Apps" buttons? I'd like to swap the Back and Home button locations. Maybe replace recent apps with something I actually use.
3. Possible to add more items to the settings tiles accessed from the pulldown?
4. Is it safe to disable Google+ if I'm running an alternate launcher? Will any apps like Chrome or Gmail stop working (not sure if they're tied in)? I have an alternate gallery app installed so Photos and Gallery will be unused. Hangouts is already disabled on mine. Alternate SMS app installed.
Thanks for your time.
You need to gain root (methods are available on this forum) then download xposed framework, (also on this forum) then download a module called Gravity Box included in the downloads part of Xposed Installer. It allows what you're looking for on Stock Rom.
Edit: I forgot, in my case I hate the soft keys so I used Ultimate Dynamic Navbar to do what you want with rearranging/customizing. Also look into LMT launcher, it allows a lot of customization and includes all of the normal hard keys and app drawers.
1&3 as above

hi is it possible to completely remove bixby, for some reason i only can pick bixby when i hold power button, any help thanks, also how can i remove samsung apss, like calendar, clock and what not
You can't "actually" remove them without custom firmware that does not include them. You can, however, "uninstall" them.
It's a trick that uninstalls for the current user, which is similar to the stock functionality of disabling apps.
[GUIDE] [DEBLOAT] Remove stock apps WITHOUT ROOT
Asus Zenfone has stock android without bloatware .. why this thread is created ?? Agreed that we have near stock android and most of the apps can be disabled in settings. But with the method mentioned below, app will never wake up to consume...
forum.xda-developers.com
I believe there is a Samsung thread somewhere that gives the package names for a lot of those apps.
found sideActions on play store to removed and remap bixby. now on to removing these damn apps
you should just have a setting in settings / advanced features for the sidekey.
