This is the third time this phone has done this in the last year. I open the Phone app and it crashes with a "Unfortunately, Contacts has stopped". The contacts app works great, but I cannot dial any phone numbers.
Things I have tried:
Delete both the dialer and contacts cache.
Restarted in Safe mode, still crashes.
Disabled sync and deleted all syncing accounts, nada.
Everything points to a factory reset, the 4th in its lifetime. I would like to avoid this hassle. Please let me know if you've had this problem and how to fix it

I got confused when you said it's the third time in the last year. The Verizon S6 has only been out a few months. Just wanted to make sure you were in the right thread. If you're in the right spot do you know if you're on OC3, OE2 or OF1? You could always try reflashing using Odin.

If you're on OC3 or OE2 you can follow these instructions. A file for OF1 is posted in the thread as well, but if you use OF1 you will not be able to root nor downgrade to OC3 or OE2.

My MAXX HD will randomly reboot. This can happen during heavy usage, or when my phone is just sitting in my pocket. It (was) non-rooted, a large amount of apps installed, and on 9.16.6. The phone started this reboot cycle about a month and a half ago.
I performed a factory reset, and it continued it's reboot cycle. The only apps that got installed were K9 mail and Touchdown.
Any ideas what could be happening?
First thing I'd try is fix permissions.

Uninstall the apps that you've installed since this has started. Then, start reinstalling until you get it to do the same thing. Then, stop using whichever app is causing.

most people dont like to hear this fix, but in most cases the best way to fix these things for good is to flash it back to stock. a fdr just removes data and doesn't fix errors in the system.
if you are still on 9.16 and want to keep that, you will need to use the 1.21 utility.

pretty sure you need a custom recovery, i dont think stock can do it.
Well... flashing stock seems to have solved it; a full day with no reboots at this point. Updates took, too!
Thanks all.
I had the same issues, stock, rooted, did factory reset no app installed VZW tech replaced phone under warranty. Now I have phone I can't unlock and still trying to root. not much help just passing some info along
Anyone else?
Fully stock? Do a factory reset from stock recovery.. Should fix it. If you're on a custom rom, do a clean flash. (wiping everything except data)
- Sent from an IceCold Hammerhead!
Thx for the advice.
But was wondering if anyone else is getting them.
I'm trying a few things to fix it as I never had a reboot since I owned the phone in November last year, until 4.4.3
At the moment I'm trying an older radio, but it's hard to pin since my last try of using a 4.4.2 kernel kept me up for 35 hours before it happened again.

no, is completely fresh
tried everything under the sun over the last month.. factory image installs, running safe mode, no apps installed, new Google account... ect ect
can't stop a soft reboot occurring every 2 or 3 days.. I use to have 'up times' of over a month on 4.4

i have noticed that if location is not set to off, it's much better, where it can run for over a week at time
as soon as i turn location off, I'm lucky to get much over 30 hours before it soft reboots
going back to 4.4 it is completely stable as it always was
About 30 minutes ago my phone was working fine, the last thing I remember doing was sending a text. A few minutes later I look down at my phone and notice it is in recovery. At this point I'm confused wondering how it got there, but figure it's whatever and reboot into system. It reboots back into recovery and at this point I'm kinda freaking out. I do a backup, wipe, and restore from a backup ~2 weeks ago. Again, rebooting just causes my phone to go into recovery.
Earlier today there was a notification on my phone about an update but I just ignored it as I didn't have time to deal with it. I assume that it automatically was applied and that is what caused this problem.
edit: If you have this problem, try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/fix-stuck-custom-recovery-trying-ota-t2907508

I turned off OTA from earlier today and also removed the notification using AppOps and now I can't boot to anything but TWRP

Was coming here to say this worked - I was already doing this.
I'm back up and running again.
Not sure wtf caused the issue - I didn't take the OTA and have been fine on the phone all day until just now

Gotta love XDA.. i was getting ready for bed.. saw a bright light, it was my phone. Same thing as mentioned. only rooted and bumped. Have been denying the OTA. Even did the hidden menu trick, but still got notifications for some reason. Flashing the ZIP showed success; trying to restore my back up now.

Once you flash the zip you shouldn't need to restore. I just clicked on reboot system and was back in

I mean I still have Root and TWRP, I might have factory reset in my panic last night before finding the fix above. Probably the cause of losing all my apps and data
ATTT Forced UPDATE
It would appear after cruising the forums this morning that ATT forced an update to all users last night. It happened to me and many others like yourself. even people that had turned off updates in the hidden menu. It is total crap and not to happy about it obviously. good thing it sent me into a boot loop, and @autoprime zip fixed me up, even though i was back up on stock rooted, I took this opportunity to move over to the PoweruserV1 international rom to attempt to keep this from happening again. Luckily our DEVS are getting development moving and soon this will be a thing of the past....
I froze Software Update with TB and did not get auto updated last night and have not gotten any new nags today. I did try to update yesterday and got the stuck in TWRP thing and flashed the fix to get back working.

whats the name of the apk to freeze? Thanks
Just adding to this, that it was 'forced' onto me as well, and also sent me to soft brick loop (TWRP), so I'm having to use the get out of jail thread. THANKS LG!! YOU GUYS ROCK!!! It is called Software Update in TB. I only have it frozen since last night so hopefully this does the trick...it also removes update option from settings FYI.
Anyone else have this happen again last night? Phone was fine at 5am, woke up at 8:30 to recovery. Flashed the same zip and now it's all fine again.
Freeze software update with titanium backup so your phone doesn't try to install the update agian
wow att and their updates f*** with everything, currently having a locked s4 with old firm of mf3. i plan on upgrading my device but on the fence with all this lock down bs. switching to tmobile seems like a decent option...... so confused and undecided

I can't understand how it can disappear without any update. Like Samsung sat a date in the system it should disappear on
Maybe it's there when we wake up tomorrow.
i am now having this problem, the phone rebooted itself which has been reported on the net by lots of people and after i downloaded an app i noticed that this mobile data icon has disappeared. i have about 32 gb of space left on my phone so i dont understand what has happened here.
happened to me to today , 920i not rooted, Saudi Arabia
So what was the point of OTA update? What's changed beside disappearing toggles?
I'm having the same issue here in Ireland since yesterday. Spoke with Samsung support and they said factory reset should fix it but I haven't done it yet
Has anyone tried a factory reset to see if it worked?

I've read that some people tested it and factory reset is not working as far as i know... If you have rooted your phone, there are some solutions exist. Otherwise, we have to wait for a fix.

Hey, XDA-ers!
I got the Android Nougat 7.0 update for my Samsung Galaxy S7 SM-G930FD (DUOS) back in January if I remember correctly. And the update process went like how it normally does. But ever since I got the Nougat update, my phone restarts randomly for no reason. At first it used to restart when I click on the 'Recent Apps' button to switch between apps. When I tap on the button, the phone vibrates and restarts. The phone never over heated before this happens. During this, the phone used to restart 2-3 times a day. This went on for 2 months. Then now, the number of restarts reduced to 1-2 per day, but the problem still persists. And now, it restarts even when I don't touch the 'Recent Apps' button. So, if any of you has had a similar experience or if any of you could help me out Please share it here. It would be GREAT!
Also just one more thing- Any of you seen any DRASTIC or worse changes in battery life of your Galaxy S7 after the Android Nougat 7.0 update? Please share your thoughts here and do suggest how you solved the problem. (My battery drains so fast that I sometimes charge it twice a day. I don't even use my phone for half of the day because I'll be at school and still the battery drain is bad! )
Factory reset. Backup your data via kies and then reset it.
Change your battery

Possibly. I can vouch for it being fixed on DQCF onwards, which is newer than DQC4. The temporary fix seems to be to use as little RAM as possible(try to cut down on background apps until the next update). That firmware isn't terribly old though. I would actually agree with trying a reflash first.

I think it is also possible to reinstall the same firmware with Smart Switch from the menu "Emergency Software Recovery and Initialisation". It's like Odin but much simpler especially for beginners. As for me, I am still in DQBO and I await the update DQD7 which is beginning to be deployed in some countries. If this is not going to solve the problem, I will try to reinstall the fimware with Smart Switch. What do you think ?

If it's restarting due to the firmware bug then DQD7 will most definitely fix it. Beware of the emergency recovery though. Ive not used Smart Switch but the "initialization" part sounds like it would wipe the device, though that could fix any issues. Backup first, if you can.
