I have been looking for a way to root an old Galaxy S3 sch-1535 that used to be on VZW network.
I had cracked the screen a long time and replaced it. But VZW never asked for it back, so my wife just uses it now on wifi since she doesnt have a smart phone. But an app that she would like to start using on it does not support 4.0.4. So... I thought rooting it might be the way to go.
Although it seems as if the info to root this phone is becoming harder to find, I am assuming because it is "older".
I was hoping you guys could help point me in the right direction. Something easy to use to root the phone and a good ROM to use once it is rooted.
I did tried cyanogenmod to root it a few weeks ago, but apparently they dont support it anymore.

That won't work on ICS, only jellybean.
Fortunately this guide still exists.

Good luck finding rootdebugfs though, if you can find a legitimate copy it will most likely work. However, I'd be extremely careful with it. I'm not exactly sure if it depends on server files to loophole your phone, and you'll be injecting a 3 year old copy of supersu (which is hardly recommended).
If you want my advice, you're better off using Odin and putting 4.1 on your phone, then using casual like ShapesBlue suggested.

Thanks for the reply. Im reading through the information now.
First question is, what exactly is the rootdebugfs that you referred to above?
Also, another question I have from reading so far is this, in the guide you provided the link to. The author says that once you are rooted to go to the superuser app and check that the bianaries are updated. If the bianaries are not updated, will I have issues updating them because of not having any OTA access, only wifi access??
I may have more questions as I read more, but wanted to ask this question before I forgot.
And just an FYI for the possibility of my stupid questions. I have done a fair amount of reading about rooting over the years, but have never actually done it

Rootdebugfs is a script that injects supersu into the system. Just not sure where it's pulling supersu from.
Binaries are from the app, it'll make you update it from the playstore. Wifi access is fine for this.

There's so much out there I have to ask it directly. I know it's got to be in the forum somewhere but I've read probably half dozen ways to do this and it's confusing.
I have a TMob Galaxy S 4g T959VUVKJ6 running T959VUVKJ6-CL694130 kernel (hope that means something to someone!) with 2.3.6 firmware that came with the phone.
How can I get rid of bloatware?
If I have to root first is there an ez way to do that, like SOC that works on my phone?
I rooted a previous phone but with an older firmware and used SOC. Looking for the same process if I can. Thanks in advance.
SOC V2.3.3 will work on GB. If you just want to root and keep the stock ROM that's your best bet.

Check my signature for FB's debloater. You do need to be rooted & have CWM installed to use it.

SOC is one way, but given that you need to have CWM installed I would suggest using the third link in bhndven's [Heimdall][One-Click][UVKJ6] The KJ6 Heimdall One-Click Collection [12/11/2011].
After that, install [KERNEL]Subtly Modified Stock with CWM5 + Voodoo Lagfix [02/24] to get on the latest beta kernel. It has the latest CWM which resolves an issue with CWM 3 not being able to mount /system on Gingerbread.

SOC will work, just make sure you have the latest version. However, to debloat you need CWM so I would forgo SOC & install the stuff above.
Nope. I downloaded SOC 2.3.3, checked USB debugging, plugged in my phone, it didn't ask my anything about my card, turned on SOC, clicked Root, it went through Killing ADB Server, daemon not running, daemon started successfully, and sat there at Starting ADB Server. Tried several times but no joy. Is it me?
It said Not Responding.
I haven't used it to root in a really long time personally. I know others have gotten it to work recently. Maybe try a different usb port. Here's a guide with some info on it. Read down a little bit and you'll see it. Sounds like your doing it right. Do you want to stay on stock and just have root? Or will you be playing with custom ROMs?

Same result. It stops responding. I'm probably going to keep it stock. I may do a custom ROM later but right now I can't get it to root. Can't figure it out.
You need to try a USB that you haven't used on your phone before. Follow the first link in my signature and go to the part about rooting. If fresh USB port doesn't work after following the guide it will probably be your USB cable.

Still no joy. I think this is just too hard to do, which brings me back to my original question. I'm sure some wizard will come up with a way to do this soon - just not now I guess. Thanks for the help though! I appreciate it. I guess I'll stay stock for awhile yet.
How could you have done what I said in that short of time? I think you aren't reading thoroughly and are waiting for a specific answer you want to hear.
Just follow the second link in my signature. You will be on rooted stock with CWM and the guide is DUMMY proof.

Another simple way to get rid of bloatware is to use titanium backup or root explorer.
Because I am sitting at my computer working on this so it wasn't that hard to do. I had SOC open, had already downloaded file manager, etc. I never got a USB port to work but I'm going to try it again. Once I get a moment to take a deep breath. I really do appreciate the help but I don't want to do alot to do that. I got spoiled with SOC.

OK, I think it worked this time. The trick was to use IE and not Chrome apparently. It didn't go like the directions said but I ended up with a rebooted phone, lost all my apps and stuff, but with superuser on it so I assume I'm rooted and this won't start launching nuclear missiles or something. Thanks, Lumin! I appreciate your patience with me.
Hi. I have posted in another thread regarding problems with my Wind Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4G (SGH-T959W), which seems to be similar to rogerperk's issues, although the phone is a different model. lumin30 responded to the post saying that my phone is not supported by XDA. Billy even tho your phone is a SGS4G it is different from the T-Mobile phone. So our methods wont work. We dont know anything about your phone or even how to root it. You are probably stuck with a locked up phone.
Super One Click is not specific to our model phone. I will post a link to the website for you to read up on and determine if you want to try using it to root. I haven't read anybody messing their phone up with SOC - however, keep in mind you will not have a way to fix your phone if you do mess it up.

yes, currently software version 1.85 is rootable. i would strongly recommend staying away from any ONE-CLICK rooting methods, as you may inadvertently OTA yourself. one click asks you to check for updates, but back then there wasn't an update to be found. if you do one click, and you do begin to update, quickly run a factory reset to get out of the OTA
once you OTA, you can never root or unlock your phone. (that's what happened to me)

Use this one click:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709424
I disagree with the other poster. Sure, you're going to check for updates, and if the one-click root does not work, it will start to download the update. The update is 100's of mb, so you have plenty of time to go and manually change the date in your settings. Just add two days. This will immediately confuse the server, and it corrupts the download and stops right away. Then try the root process again. It took me many tries of adding two days (got somewhere near the end of August), but low and behold, it finally was successfully.
Also, at any point feel free to do a factory reset and start again. All of the people's recent experiences are near the end of the thread I posted above.
FYI, I did this 3 days ago on my phone.

Yeah.. CWM isn't supported by the One X, TWRP is.
So if anyone new is reading this, please avoid CWM. It'll be of benefit for you.
I have a rooted, unlocked SG3 running stock ROM and as of a couple weeks ago, continue to get prompted to install the OTA update (VRAGL7 I believe). Unsurprisingly the install fails when I try to apply it.
My question is, do I have to restore in order to apply this update? And if so, is it possible to instead defer the update indefinitely (since I dont want to restore and there doesnt appear to be anything useful in this update according to their site).
Im also sure someone else must have asked this before, but after browsing the last few pages and searching, I couldnt find anything. Feel free to direct me to a previous response if I missed it.
Thanks in advance!
This has been covered numerous times, but, here you go. If you want to take the update, lock your bootloader, Odin back to stock, take the OTA update, reroot, unlock, etc.
If you don't want to do that, freeze SDM 1.0 with Titanium and the message will stop. One thing though, you will not be able to update OTA until you restore SDM. Which, you shouldn't be updating a rooted phone to begin with unless you want a world of problems.
Good luck!

Make sure that you read it and pay attention very carefully. I tried to do the same exact thing and had problems. Had to Odin back to stock. I think my problem was that I was running a custom kernel. Anyway I got the unauthorized software message and could only get into stock recovery and download mode.

follow a guide, take notes if you have to. print it out, highlight and read up. theres also videos that you can watch which you can pause and do each step alongside the video. thats how i started as I was cautious at first also.
it can be overwhelming at first, but its really not that difficult.

One thing I couldn't find in the thread. Is an SD card mandatory? I don't have currently have one but will get one if necessary.
sd card isnt mandatory. the larger TW roms can be close to 1gb in size though.
theyre cheap on amazon if you wanted to grab one.

SD cards are not mandatory as mentioned before, but they are highly recommended as the only way you can lose data on them is if you explicitly tell your phone to format the card, a ROM flash will not format the card, and a ROM will never need the card to be formatted.

Like everyone has said before follow the guides and it really is simple. make sure you read them several times and watch the videos. it is better to understand what you are doing upfront. I made the mistake of rooting a friend's phone one time and rooting my fiance's phone. It became a nightmare because he didn't take the time to read through the forums here on xda like I had asked him and it was constantly a pain trying to help him. I figured my fiance's incredible needed all the help it could get and she loved it rooted but with rooting there is always the occasional issue and it was easier for me to get her a note 2 then keep having her upset about her phone.
rooting sch-i535
very easy to root. Just did mine this weekend, took an hour or two of reading and trying several things. don't buy the gs3 toolkit v7.4.5 as it didnt work for me.. I think it was driver related but the recovery loads never worked.
What did work is, download odin 3.07, the vralec bootchain, cwm, and superuser w/ bootloader. you have to know what version you are on. go to settings, about phone. if it is 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439
follow the instructions step by step. In fact I'd highly recommend watching the video first and following it STEP BY STEP exactly how he does it.
Notes:
step3: get the Both Root and Unlocked Bootloader SuperUser. this needs to be on your External SDcard in your phone to follow the instructions per se. You are going to use 'load zip file from external SDcard' on the Recovery step.
The other files should be on your computer in your odin folder (or elsewhere that you can find them). All you need is VRALEC and CWM which will be loaded via the PDA button in Odin ONLY.
step5: I didn't restore the factory bootchain. just left it as is.. working fine for me
if you dont boot into custom recovery directly after flashing the VRALEC bootchain the phone will detect that you are screwing with it and reload the factory bootchain! it happened to me the first time. Had to flash a couple times and do things in the correct order to finally get CWM on there. You can see the difference between the factory recovery and CWM recovery (it has a little hat in the middle of the screen and text is different, etc) As long as you flash it with the PDA button ONLY you will be fine. DO NOT USE BOOTLOADER BUTTON IN ODIN AT ALL! Be very careful with Odin and triple-check that you are using the correct settings. It's very easy, but you can potentially brick your phone if you are not carefully looking at every setting. Take your time! :fingers-crossed:

You are in the right place, the mini, ultra, and maxx are basically the same device aside from their battery and screen size.
You can root if you are on 4.2.2. If you took the 4.4 update than you are SOL for now.
There is a nice guide on how to do everything here, Just remember to grab the fxz files for your device, not the ultra/maxx.

i just got the phone as well. or i should say it will be here today. does anyone know can i root using 4.2.2 use voodoo to save the root then use fastboot to upgrade to 4.4 from the SBF file?
Nope. Voodoo does not work with Android 4.3 and newer.
You will need to follow the previously mentioned guide to the letter. One mistake can cost you root until someone finds a 4.4 exploit.
I am still on my old M'ini. Just considering. But may wait for root on kk. Aren't they shipping minis with kk now?
Than the lack of sd card? Is there enough memory for backups @ 3 gb each?
Is otg working for everybody & does it stand in for a external sd well?
Why did Google make such an iphonish move in the first place?
It has 11GB total available storage. I have 5.83GB free on mine, but I do have TomTom and 738MB worth of videos that take up space. I have 1.28GB worth of apps installed. I haven't found the lack of SD card to be a problem (yet). If you wanted to keep your entire music library on the phone, that could be a problem.
I haven't tried OTG, but an external drive would definitely be a good place to keep backups. Now that you mention it, I might order one to try.
I don't know why they dumped the MicroSD card. Maybe planned obsolescence or they just didn't see the point since these devices are practically disposable since most people only keep a smartphone 2yrs tops before wanting to upgrade again. They started to do the same with Nexus devices too.
Oh yeah, and compared to the M, the battery life is a lot worse. I barely get 2-days of light use and I have Wifi set to turn off when the phone is sleeping and I also keep mobile data off when I'm not using it. I tried leaving Wifi on in its default state which is "Always On" and only got 1-1/2 days out of it. On the other hand, I don't notice the bad battery life so much now that I bought a wireless charging pad for $10 which works well with the Mini. I keep it at work and I just set the phone down on the wireless charging pad when I'm at my desk.

4,2 is last build for voodoo.
Rzr has an xml.
So everyone's mini has come w/ rootable builds?
Just thought I'd update. Got an OTG cable and it works with KitKat. It works with a mouse and external flash drive, but there is no native support. You have to install the app StickMount (which requires root), then it will work. It mounts USB drive to /sdcard/usbStorage/sda1. As far as I can tell, FAT and FAT32 are read/write, exFAT and NTFS are read-only.
It's pretty nice for backup and restore using Titanium without using internal storage space.

Great. What about builds that come on the phone? Rootable?

Only Jelly Bean. If it ships with KitKat, still not rootable.

I received my Mini on 2/12 straight from VZW and it has 4.2.2 w/ 12.7.7. OTA keeps pushing me to update to 12.15.15 I believe but I'm snoozing it till I read and get more info on rooting it. This is my first android and although I'm not new to modding, I am to android.
No root method for stock 4.4 yet. Hopefully someone releases an exploit, but AFAIK there's nobody currently working on it.. At least for the droid lineup..

Please do not flame me on my own thread.
If you have NOT tried it, move on, please.
Simple request.
If you have tried this let us know. I am only seeking conformation of its, empirically tested, inability to root 4.4 or 4.2. I would try it myself but I am still on the old M. Jcase says it will not work. The op of the method asures it is harmless.

Surely someone has tried it-That is my question?
But No false hope. It will not work....

AFAIK, jcases method for 4.2 used adb and that was patched in 4.4? From what I understand reading the op of that thread, it won't work and if jcase (probably the only one who ever released an exploit for our device, I'm new to the xt1080 so have only read through so much) says it won't work I'll take his word for it. Could be wrong, but I'm not willing to brick my personal phone testing it.

Thanks but that is not the answer I am seeking.
Please no replies but: yes I tried it!
Thanks

If jcase says it won't work I don't think ANYONE here will be willing to try it.
Anyway, good luck with this!

Running 4.4 means that it's fairly unlikely to work. I haven't heard of anyone succeeding in rooting a locked-bootloader 4.4 system.
However, there's no risk to trying. If it doesn't work, it won't damage anything. If someone is saying that it won't work because they know that the kernel is patched, that's one thing. But if there's a good reason to not try, I'd like to know what it is, especially if there's something bad that could happen I'd like to know what it is so I can fix it.
So I have the phone rooted, permanent root, on 4.4, using stickmount. Must be on 15.5.3 to use the tethered root. Then I just installed safestrap, booted into it, and flashed SuperSU. Permanent root. Jcase said in his post this wouldn't work, but it does and I can prove it. Then after permanent root use motoWPnomo and follow the on screen instructions to install the cracked kernel. Worked like a charm for me. I had 4.4 root before but I soft bricked my phone with a certain mod so I was stuck without root for a couple months until a new exploit came out. This is the best phone I've ever had by far. So much better than the M xt907. Better in so many ways, except boot loader unlock.
