Can't turn on radio. - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have no signal, I can't turn on radio in the hidden settings (*#*#4636#*#*) and I can't change preffered network to 2g nor 3g.
I have flashed different radios, flashed several factory images (4.4,5.1.1,5.0) but I have the same problem. One thing though, when I'm on 4.4 it says the radio is on in the hidden settings (still no signal) but I can
t' turn it off. Is this a software or hardware problem? What can I do/what are replacement parts I could buy?
Thanks.

Please anyone? This is very urgent.

When I'm on 5.0 my phone immediatly recognizes my sim card and in the initial setup it can verify my network (don't have a signal afterwards). On 5.1.1 I have to take my sim out and put it back in before it recognizes it and it can't verify in the initial setup (also no signal afterwards).

Same problem here. Tried all radios, all stock versions since 4.4 up to 5.1.1.
I'm beginning to suspect physical damage.

What carrier?

I'm in Brazil. Reading other threads, I noticed something: my phone is a D820, versus the international D821. I read that the modems are binary-equal, what determines the supported LTE bands is a configuration in the Qualcomm chipset. In my case, only D821 will support band 7 (which is the local LTE frequency). See: http://www.phonearena.com/news/Differences-between-the-two-Nexus-5-models-D820-and-D821_id48985
You wouldn't by any chance be in an area with the international LTE bands, would you?

[Q] Can't turn on 1700 band

Hi All
I have a problem, and don't really know that to do. I have a Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4g, rooted, running the latest nightly and modem. Recently I went on vacation to Europe and while there used local sim cards from t-mobile Eu. At first nothing worked, Then I read some forums and from there learned of the *#*#4636#*#* code. Used the Select Radio Band option and switched to the Euro band selection. All was well Europe SIM cards worked Data, voice everything.
I get back to Canada, and I figure I need to switch back to the USA band. So I do. but still no service, no voice or data. I can get roaming. but that's not really an option. I see the network operators Bell and Rogers, but no Wind or Mobilicity(who use the 1700 band). I'm on wind. So to me it looks like the 1700 mhz band is turned off on my phone.
So far I have tried...
Used the *#*#4636#*#* multiple times switching bands...
Tried using the settings menu to select wcdma preferred or global
Re-flashing the modem
Flashing to the newest nightly
Tried a verified good SIM card
Nothing works....
I'm thinking I may have to go back to the stock t mobile software and try to turn on the radio there...
So does anyone have an idea what could be missing? Or how to specifically turn on the 1700 mhz band? The select radio band pop up only has two options Euro band and USA band.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Okay!
So I think I'm back up and running, all AWS networks in Canada show up. Haven't tried data or voice, but I'll be doing that on the way home from work...I'll post after if things still don't work...
So these are the steps I took....
1. Using CWM I did a full back up to an SD card.
2. Then using CWM I flashed the stock JB firmware from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41209211&postcount=1
3. In the Dialer app. I dialed *#197328640# navigated through the gsm, lte, wcdma options and set the band selection to automatic.
4. Tested phone on stock to see if it picks up the networks...and it did!
5. Using CWM restored my original cyanogenmod install with all settings and software.
6. Tested network connectivity again, and the networks now show up.
On the way home I'll do some tests with data and voice.
Looks like everything works! woot!
It looks like there's a bug in the band selection code. It should be offering you the AWS frequencies, as well an an automatic everything choice.
I'll look into a fix for apexqtmo. In addition, I will nuke the CDMA options, they're not needed and probably causing other problems.

GSM problem!

Hey Guys! please help me out!
My oneplus one has a issue for a long time. I live in Turkey and using a network provider named "Avea". With di.3.0 alpha baseband I get no reception no matter what I do, however its like a bug. my sim service trying to reconnect every 5 seconds like in loop.
The issue is: In my country we still have 3G not LTE. and still in many areas beacuse of our networks are so not strong our phones got Edge signal. The problem on my opo is I only have 3G, my 2G band is lost. My GSM band is lost too. If choose another prefered network type instead of 3G my network is lost.
I guess this loss of bands on my phone, DI3.0 baseband modem is not working too. How can I bring back my 2G and GSM bands ?

Help! Doogee X5 Pro modem cycles whenever accessed in LTE or 3G mode

I would love someone to help with this strange problem, before I throw this phone in the bin!
First the specs.
Doogee x5Pro, Android 5.1,
Baseband DOOGEE-X5pro.2015/10/08
Kernel version [email protected].2015.10.08
Build number DOOGEE X5pro-Android5.1-R08-2015.10.26
The phone works fine when I set Cellular Settings / Preferred network type to 2G. Of course it only works as a 2G phone in this mode.
However, if I set the Preferred network type to either 3G or 4G (recommended) then as soon as I try to make a call or send an SMS, the modem radio turns off and the call is immediately dropped or Messaging says the SMS service is unavailable. Occasionally the called phone will ring, but the call drops immediately. Sometimes the SMS does get through, but at my end it appears that the modem radio turns off and on again as soon as the Dialler or Messaging tries to use it. If someone tries to call me, the phone rings and caller-ID is displayed, but as soon as I answer, the modem radio cycles off and on again, and the call gets dropped.
If I am in an 4G LTE coverage area, then 4G data works fine (browsing was fast, Speedtest was showing 85+Mbps) but I still cannot make or receive calls, or send SMS's - as soon as I try, the modem radio cycles off and then on. If I am not in an LTE coverage area (but am in a 3G WCDMA coverage area), then the phone just constantly cycles showing 4G for an instant then 3G, then radio off, then radio on but no service, then 4G etc... - this cycle is very regular and takes about 53 seconds end-to-end. If wi-fi is on, this cycle only starts if the modem is accessed (e.g. by trying to make a call), or by turning wifi off and cellular data on. And of course I can't make or receive calls or send SMS's during this cycle, and even when the signal shows 3G I can't get any data connectivity. While it's doing this, if I go to Settings / SIM cards, the 'On/Off' slider moves to 'Off' when the radio cycles off, and then moves back to 'On' again.
In summary; in 3G or 4G preferred network mode and not in LTE coverage, whenever anything (calls, SMS or data) tries to use the modem it cycles off and on again. When in LTE coverage, data works but calls and SMS cause the modem to cycle. As I mentioned, 2G is fine.
I think I've tried most of the obvious things, and some not-so-obvious ones. These are the things I've tried so far.
Obvious things like reboot, battery out, reset to factory settings, wipe cache, clear application data. No change.
I swapped the SIM from Slot 1 (LTE/WCDMA) to Slot 2 (GSM) - the behaviour was exactly the same (this surprised me as it seemed to be LTE-related).
I put my SIM in a carrier's (Vodafone NZ) Samsung 4G phone and it worked fine, also it was fine in a Chinese-brand 3G phone. Then I put another Vodafone NZ 4G SIM in my phone and it had exactly the same problems, so I think it's the phone rather than the SIM or the carrier.
Because data works fine when in LTE coverage, and the phone does ring if called (but cycles the modem immediately when I answer the call), it seems the hardware is possibly working OK. So I assumed software or settings might be the cause.
I created new APN's using carrier-supplied settings. No change. I flashed various Doogee stock ROM versions (don't think there are any custom ones for this phone) and they all display the same problem, rooted or otherwise. I've used the engineering menus (*#*#3646633#*#* and *#*#4636#*#*) to change bands, network preferences and various other settings with no effect. 2G (GSM only) is the only one that works. I installed the Xposed Framework and Gravitybox module and had a play with some of the settings in there but again, no effect.
I don't know what else to try and I can't return the phone as it costs too much to send it back to China from New Zealand.
So any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated, otherwise I'm stuck with a not particularly useful 2G wi-fi phone.
Thanks in advance.
Just a bit of an update. I've discovered that 4G LTE works fine when in range and 2G works fine all of the time; but 3G just doesn't work at all and I have no idea why - I've searched the threads and tried all of the suggestions I could find that can be applied to this phone. As soon as anything tries to access the 3G radio (calls, SMS or data), the modem just 'reboots' (powers off and on again).
All of the other symptoms I've described are related to this. When out of (or in marginal) 4G coverage, it starts in 4G, falls back to 3G and that's when the modem 'reboots'. When in 4G range, data works fine but as soon as I make or recieve a call it needs to drop from 4G to 3G (I don't think we have VoLTE here) and that's when the modem 'reboots'.
So any ideas anyone? Is this likely to be a hardware problem with the phone?
Thanks.

Good to see another Kiwi with a Doogee X5 PRO. I have not seen these issues in Auckland but a few weeks ago I upgraded to R17 using this ROM :
www.needrom.com/download/doogee-x5-pro/
I noticed 3G and 4G are much improved and I could get both in either slot 1 or 2 (I use dual Voda SIMS).
Last week I went Android6 (32-bit) using this ROM:
www.needrom.com/download/android-6-0/
Using this ROM I can only get 3G and 4G in slot 1 and 2 is "locked" to 2G .. so I guess its software based. If your comfortable with flashing your device then do the R17 upgrade or see if its available OTA

Hi, thanks for the tip - I've already tried the various ROMs on NEEDROM and currently have Android 6 installed, unfortunately the modem still exhibits exactly the same behaviour. But good to hear that yours works OK in NZ because that reinforces by belief that it must be a hardware issue (rather than a network one). Unfortunately this means the phone's only really any use as a WiFi 'phablet' or a 2G phone. So I've given up on it and bought a cheapo Voda Smart Prime instead, which does the basics OK - shame really as I've had Doogee's before and they've been really good. Oh well
I have just gotten an X5 Max Pro. I've noticed that I only have 3G service from my carrier in my area and for that reason I cannot receive calls if I set the favourite network type to 4G(recommended). I have to set the preferred network type to 3G in order to be able to receive calls, otherwise you will receive the "the phone you are calling is off or out of signal" notification, at the same time that I receive a text message from my carrier notifying the lost call.
To me it seems that the phone is not capable of downgrading the signal automatically to 3G when there is no 4G signal. However, I can make calls and receive text messages with no problems at all.
When I have 4G coverage, everything works just fine with the preferred network type set to 4G(recommended).
Is this a software or a hardware problem? I really don't know if it is related to the problems already described here with the x5 pro, but I have decided to post my experience. Maybe it will give some more hints about what is wrong with many Doogee x5 devices.
Thanks
Possible explanation & solution
Hi,
I may have an explanation and solution.
I have Doogee X5 Max Pro and I ran into similar problems. Doogee international did not respond to me, but their agent in Israel did.
Apparently in each cellular provider uses two frequencies: 2000 for outdoors, and 850 *or* 900 for indoors. High end phones support both 850 and 900 (along with the 2000). This model only supports 900 (and 2000), which means that you'd if your provider uses 850, you'd have a good reception outdoors, but a lousy one / none indoors (along with a higher battery consumption etc.).
The solution was to switch to a different provider that uses 900 frequency, and that indeed solved the problem (in Israel I switched to Partner - used to be a part of the Orange network) .
I hope that helps.

I think Yossi hit the nail on the head there! Ouch!
In Oz we have Telstra on the 850MHz band and Optus etc on the 900MHz 3G band..
So Optus is OK but Telstra nay.
The trap is they may show heaps of signal strength but it is probably from the wrong band!
You can do everything except make or take a phone call!
A lot of problems with phones has reared it's ugly head since the 2G network shut down.
Unless you have plenty of 4G signal (which the various providers share the same bands), you would be pretty stuffed..
I wonder if firmware(Rom) changes could solve the problem ?
(I also have the Doogee x5 max pro..)

Verizon M8 only connecting to 2G/GSM networks. No 3G/4G.

Hi All,
The issue with my Verizon M8 [the rare LRA (LTE for Rural America) subvariant] is that no matter what firmware version/RUU I use, I only get GSM connectivity on it. No WCDMA or LTE. I have checked the WCDMA bands in my country and that is not an issue. When I select WCDMA only option, I cannot get any signal. I have flashed the all the LRA (*.**.512.*) RUUs as well as all the Verizon (*.**.605.*) RUUs but no luck at all. If this issue might be related to PRL settings then please let me know if any of you have any idea. I have also checked the relevant WCDMA/LTE bands via CDMA tool and they are also enabled.
My M8 is currently S-off and has Super CID. I am using it outside the US on GSM network.
This has got me very frustrating and I need to find out if this is a software issue or a hardware issue. One more thing is that another guy here has exactly the same variant as mine. He bricked his radio by flashing the GSM firmware. I provided him my phone's relevant partition dumps and after flashing those onto his phone, his phone's radio became operational but now he has the same issue as mine. So I think that this issue might not be hardware related.
Any help on this will be greatly appreciated!!

Hello. Yes, I know the bands used by 2G, 3G and 4G in my country. And yes I have switched sim cards even from different networks. The PRL version shows as 00000 when i look at it from the settings. I have even tried to update the PRL from a prl file provided by a xda user in some other thread but still it shows as 00000. I have seen some threads and ppl had this problem with One S. Though some of them were able to correct it by flashing some stock and custom radios.

odd. i wonder if that lra model is sim locked like the sprint variant. is it also acknowledging you have a sim card inserted when you check in about phone? as in, does it display the sim #

Well, I thought too that it might be sim locked but then why it is working with 2G networks. There should be no signal at all then. Also these LRA variants are being sold by many online retailers including Amazon as sim unlocked phones. And yes it acknowledges when I insert or change a sim. Says "Preparing sim card" and then I get a signal (2G only). When I choose 3G only in network settings, the signal is gone immediately and I have to switch back to auto or 2G only to get the signal back.

So then list the specific band numbers for 2G, 3G, and LTE for your carrier. That is really what the previous response was asking.

This is strange, as the 3G band 2100 Mhz is really common (many countries use it for 3G, and most any recent US phone intended for foreign travel will support it), and should be supported by the device out-of-the-box. This tells me the problem is likely not RUU/firmware related.
You sure the APN is properly typed? And does your carrier use any different APN for 3G, LTE, etc.?

No it uses the same APN for all types and its configured correctly. I also thought the issue might rather be related to some NV values or PRL. If I set it to 3G only, it "Sees" the carrier as I can see a signal bar in network signal guru app, but the mobile is not able to connect to it.
so i am thinking that since this is a lra variant, a lot of bands may be disabled. have you seen anywhere else that someone got a lra variant to work outside the us? i know you said people were selling it as being unlocked, but maybe its not

Well the LRA variant is practically the Verizon one with everything same as the Verizon variant. There a lot of links on both Amazon and eBay in which its mentioned that its LRA variant and is factory unlocked and can be used anywhere in the world. And yes I came across various threads on XDA in which people had this same variant, working fine (3G atleast) but they wanted to upgrade to Android 6 MM as there is no official update available for this variant after Android 5 Lollipop. As for the relevant bands (2100MHz for 3G used in my country), they were already unlocked (checked via CDMA Tool and QXDM).

I am using the stock LRA RUU (android 5.0.2). I have also tried the VZW RUUs from 4.4 to 6.0 but the same issue exists on them all. Even I have used GPE and Sense based custom roms but the same issue. I think that the issue might be related to some NV values or this phone might be network locked. Is there a way to check if the phone is network/sim locked? As I am getting the (2G) signals for all the networks in my country.

it being sim/network locked makes sense, because the phone was made for people who live in the middle of nowhere. there would also be a high probability that none of those people will ever travel outside the country. i do not know anything about the nv values and tweaking them, but i have looked at that thread a few times. lastly, if you have only picked up 2g regardless of sim or apn used, it could be defective radios

yes I got my issue fixed. Can u confirm which device you have? software version *.*.512* or *.*.605.*?

Just got a S8+ and found out it doesn't support my carrier's network band

Just got a S8+ from my brother and was having some troubles with it (can text/use data but not recieve/make calls) and found out that the cause was because the phone supported the 4G LTE band of my carrier but not the 3G band which is what my carrier uses for calls.
So how screwed am I? is there anything I can do to fix this?

If so I would get in contact with your provider and see if is compatible with there network frequencies. apart from changing providers I am not sure what you can do.
If I've done my research properly freedom mobile is Canadian region apparently there are to modes home and away have you tried the away mode

yes that is my phone
i think away might actually work really well, how would i force it to only use away/roaming?
okay this is weird, so i turned roaming on, connected to a different carriers network (rogers) and i can text and data fine but still cannot make or recieve calls on a AWAY network....? does this mean it shouldn't be a network band problem?
it shouldnt be my sim card as my sim card works fine on my older phone fine (s7E) and i JUST got it replaced my the warranty service (to fix this problem, which it didnt). It shouldn't be the phone either as my brother put his sim back in the phone and he can make calls fine....... what is wrong here?
IT WORKED THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
changing to rogers did not work (not sure why? maybe they use the same band is freedom)
however afterwards i changed to telus and i got calls!!
