So I got my nexus 5 on Friday and its perfect none of the mentioned defects was having some small issues with the notification light but that's all. However I noticed once a day since getting it I go to use my phone and it says emergency only / Rogers and I won't be able to make calls or receive calls. Anyone else experiencing this problem ?

I'm on Bell and for some reason sometimes I'd have no signal out of no where then it'll jump back to full bars the next second... Really annoying unless this is a normal thing for the Nexus 5

I'm on Rogers and I get this too. I usually fix it by going into network mode and change it to 3G and back to LTE immediately.
I still get incoming calls even though I can't dial out until I do the above change.
Its network problem not the nexus 5

I have the similar problem i'm on rogers and if the signal gets weak it will show signal strength in the home screen, i can surf the internet(data), but will not send text messages or make calls, if I try to make a call it say "cellular network not available", if i turn air plane mode on then off it reconnects right away. this has never happened with my GE Galaxy S4

I have the exact same issue guys, I hope that it has nothing to do with our nexus 5's.
im getting this error too. darn! its not normal for a phone to be like that. never happened to my previous one.
there must be something wrong with the phone.
im on Fido.
but its only happening to canadian network? weird.
maybe they're torturing people who didnt buy from them? lol
It looks like I have a similar issue.
My connection sometimes gets lost. Some sort of hiccup when connected to mobile network.
No issues found on WIFI
I'm on a hspa network in Canada and wanted to report that I get worse reception with the N5 than I did with my Galaxy S2. I hope it is easy fixable with a new modem flash or other update.
Just wanted to contribute in case there is anyone working on this and wanted some more info.
I had to change my data plan because, according to T-Mobile (US) it was not compatible with the phone. I could get emails and SMS text messages but could not get Internet data services (kept being prompted to log onto the network and presented with the T-Mobile logon screen). Lost my unlimited data, which I was grandfathered into (but found out that they were throttling me at 5 GB which I don't usually hit). I knew they would eventually make me change my plan anyway and was able to get a new 4.5 GB plan at the same price. Since T-Mobile will be offering this phone very soon (tomorrow? they're taking pre-orders now), I guess a lot of long-time customers will be pushed off their unlimited data plan.
I have the same problem!! It's really annoying - mine gets dropped every 2-5 mins! Is there a way to fix it? Is it the N5 or Rogers network?
I have the same problem in Belgium:

If you are constantly getting poor signal it might be the handset. If you have good signal, and can use data, but have "Emergency calls only" instead of a carrier name, it's probably a carrier issue.
I am on Fido and have randomly had the same problem. There's another thread somewhere, and most if not all people reporting the problem are Rogers/Fido customers.

good point though... i don't see anyone from other canadian carriers complaining.
I also have this problem. I am on Fido in BC. Sometimes it will completely cut off the network signal from full bars to no service, similar to no sim card installed. It goes back to normal in about 5-6 seconds by itself but its definitely annoying.

It is a software issue. I switched to a different ROM and kernel.
Cataclysm ROM and bricked Kernel.
So far, the connection is solid with this combo.
Just curious as to what others are doing to deal with this issue (discussed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47276465 ).
I just bought my N5 two days ago and, while I have an iPhone 5s to fall back on, it would be really nice to be able to use the phone that I just bought. I was thinking of setting up a Tasker profile or something to switch radios based on some factor or another. Maybe let it drop to 1xRTT when on WIFI (when I'm home or at work) and use LTE elsewhere (I like to stream music in my car with my phone - 1xRTT is no good for that ). I really just need a way to see when someone has attempted to call, so that I can call back. Oh well. Someone will figure something out.
So how about you? What are you doing to cope?
Using a different phone?
"Screw everyone who calls me, I need DATA" ?
"Sprint can suck it, I'm switching to [other carrier] because this is the phone I want." ?
Something else?
Hate to double post, but I thought people might like to know.
For whatever reason today I felt compelled to switch back to my N5 from my iPhone 5s. To do so on Sprint (apparently) requires a factory reset.
After factory resetting and reactivating my Nexus 5, it magically works the way it should. LTE when I need data, but I still get phone calls and texts like normal.
Unless Sprint literally fixed the problem overnight, I have no idea what happened.
So if you're having the tri-band LTE issue feel free to give this a shot. I'm located in Central PA, for what it's worth.

it could have been an error in activation possibly causing the problem. a simple prl and profile update may have fixed the issue for you initially. if you didnt try that, that is.
No I'm in Hagerstown and lte just started working last night for me too. Now my problem is making phone calls. When I'm on Lte I can't make phone calls. I cant receive them just fine but wjen I try to call out it says call sent and immediately says call ended. Can u make calls on Lte?

Just wondering if any one else gets this, sometimes my signal just drops out and I get no service.
Then it comes back it does not happen all the time, I live in a big city Leeds infact so signal is quite strong.
Just wondering if it could be a fault with the phone?
Thanks

It is definitely possible.
I'm on AT&T and have the correct APN settings and have called AT&T with my IMEI. I have significantly worse signal than with my HTC One X. I am not comparing bars to bars, but rather where the signal drops completely. In places where I had low signal but still connected I now have nothing.
Straight talk using at&t Sim and notice radio drops..

T-Mobile on stock ROM i had my first signal drops.
I was fine (or at least never noticed them) from the time i got my phone (day one) without any drops here in orlando.
Drove over to Tampa/Venice Beach area this past weekend and noticed some drops. Had about 6 drops according to my battery stats in 2 days. i had good to excellent coverage the entire time except when it would drop comlpetely (outline of signal bars)
would connect in a couple seconds, but i noticed over night, it would drop for a pretty large amount of time (like 10-15 minutes at a time.)
Mmm defo seems like were all having the same issues, wonder what it could be
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I had this issue too, and here's how I fixed it:
By default LTE is enabled, meaning the phone will periodically scan for a LTE network. If you're in a big city, you're likely to find one. Your phone will attempt to connect. However, it fails, meaning it will have to rescan the HSPA bands to connect back. That results in a few seconds of no service. Why can't it connect to LTE? Because by default, the APN is not the LTE APN, for Rogers at least. I'd assume AT&T would be the same. You can test this by dialing *#*#4636#*#*, selecting phone info, and selecting LTE only. You'll see that there is no service. I tested this in an area I knew had great LTE coverage, and that led me to the conclusion that it's LTE causing the signal drops.
So how to fix? Simple, just change your APN to the LTE APN for your carried. To do that go to Settings -> More -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names. If you're experiencing this issue on Rogers, change the APN field to ltemobile.apn. If you're on another carrier, you'll have to search for their LTE APN configuration.
After doing this your phone should start connecting to LTE again, and you won't get those annoying signal drops.

So yeah the next update will probably fix the issue. It's not so bad in the meantime, Lightflow sill notify you that your nexus has lost signal, and you still get the internet and incoming calls.
We're not alone. Supposedly Google is "aware" of the issue.
i've hcanged my setting from '4g' to '3g' to see if i notice a difference (hopefully will) then when 4g is released or i get a 4g sim, can move it back up
Yes, I'm having issues too. The real problem is the fact that I have a Wilson cell booster in my home (supposed to have up to 5000 square foot range) and my n4 had full bars most everywhere inside. With my n5 It shows 1 to 2 bars if I'm lucky and quite often drops to none! The only way to get full bars Is to stand right under the indoor antenna. Not impressed, and I sure hope this is fixable!

I hate to revive a dead thread, but I was wondering if people were still having problems. Once or twice during the day that I can see I will lose signal for a few seconds only to have it reconnect. Running 4.4.2 so the latest update did nothing to help the problem as far as I can see and I have messed with my APN settings. On AT&T. The Google thread seems to have a lot of different problems on the same thread, and it is a bit unclear if people are still having this problem. This is very annoying for such an otherwise spectacular phone. Thanks and sorry again for reviving the thread... :fingers-crossed:

Appreciate the speedy reply. Hope Google gets on this fast. I also have LTE connection issues which has plagued both this and my original device so I am pretty sure its a radio issue. The phone loves to stay on HSPA+ even when there is a decent LTE connection: it's last in the pack to connect to LTE and first to disconnect when compared to others on AT&T.

My N4 with a combo radio sticks to LTE a tad better than my N5 with stock radio. Sadly, morrislee hasn't fiddled and combo'd N5 radios, and I'm not sure they've been tested and sussed out like the N4 radios. Citing the fact some with issues have flashed all the radios so far with minimal success means we wait for Qualcomm, after Google kicks them in the you know where.

Have you tried a different sim card from like a friends phone to make sure its not the phone itself? You can also try to call ATT to see if its on their end.

I had this issue on the stock, unrooted ROM after about 4 months as well. I think the cache partition was corrupted. You can try wiping this in recovery and see if the problem fixes itself.
I didn't think of just wiping the cache, so instead I did a factory reset by unlocking the bootloader and everything cleared up.
Now I wipe the cache partition roughly once a month and the phone runs like a champ. Also I use sdmaid to clear the device from junk that accumulates over time.

Thanks for the help, but I already did a factory reset with no success. Data works fine on LTE but if ibtryvswitching to 3g or 2g signal drops as well. If I have full signal it will connect but anything in less it doesn't connect the calls.

This happened to me on my non rooted N5 with 4.4.4. Disabling Wifi and/or LTE sometimes allowed a single SMS to get through, but then the problem resumed.
I fixed it by booting into recovery and wiping the cache partition. For some reason that took a long time (about 5 minutes) but eventually it finished and when I rebooted it was all good.
I'd try the wiping the cache and reflashing the radio.
I had a similar issue first week of owning the phone any time I sent a text I lost service until I rebooted.
From what I've read some N5's don't like the 4.4.4 radios. Mine likes 4.4.4 but couldn't pick up a signal if it had a 50ft antenna with 4.4.3 radio.

I just had this almost exact same scenario. I started having problems with signal dropping using CM12 nightlies (late April 2015) then eventually I switched over to a NET10 because T mobile was not cutting it to begin with. After the problem persisted on an ATT Sim card with NET10, I started flashing different ROMs. Signal seemed to be more stable and everything was fine for a while. After a few days I was no longer able to make or receive calls.
Eventually I did a complete factory image (still didn't work)
Flashed a 4.4 radio image (didn't work immediately, but the next morning it seems to be working as of now)
I probably could have skipped the hours of trouble shooting if I would have (found this thread first) and just tried flashing different radio images. Or maybe it was the series of other steps combined...not really sure.
Good luck and hopefully this helps the next person going through this mess. Oh and don't event waste your time calling NET10/Straighttalk customer service.
*EDIT* Above did not solve my problem, I actually had to fix the physical radio connections which came loose.
same problem
Hey guys having the exact same issue. Dropped my phone hard and then all of a sudden I cannot make or receive ant calls with my carrier dialer. I can send and receive texts, use LTE data , Wi-Fi. When I place a call, it is silent for about 10 seconds then drops the call. When people call it is silent for 15 seconds, then voicemail.
Called google, said it is out of warranty and LG would have to repair it for $150 just to see the phone.
Have done a cache wipe and factory reset. Is this most likely a hardware issue that I need to open the back for ? Little bit of a tech noob but can work my way around things. Any help is super appreciated as I love my N5 32G and don't have the money.
Same issue that I had, just remove the back and reattach/secure the radio wiring. It's on the left side and rubs parallel to the battery. It was a petty quick and easy fix.

So I took the back off and looked at the cables and they were both connected. I took them off anyways and reconnected them. Didn't see anything surprising to my eyes at least. The only thing I did find out was that LTE is the only setting that I can't use data and texts on. 3G and 2G say no cellular network detected. Do I maybe need to replace the antenna cables ??

Hmmm. I don't think the cables would be bad. I would just make absolute sure that they are staying attached after you re-assemble your phone. I even put a small piece of tape over the end that I noticed was loose. If that doesn't work then I think we had different issues with the same symptoms.
I'm having this same issue. Three weeks now, unable to make or receive calls. SMS and data work fine. Wifi works. LTE works. When I switch to 3G or 2G there is no connection and T-Mobile doesn't appear in the list of networks. The SIM card works fine in another phone so it must be an issue with the device.
Tried everything on the software and settings side, flashed different ROMs, flashed different radios including stock. No change whatsoever. I completely disassembled and reassembled the phone. Nothing was loose or looked broken, all contacts seem to be making contact.
I do vaguely recall dropping the phone recently, so I guess that must have been it. The only other possible cause was that Google Play Services was auto-updated the day before I noticed the problem. Of course that is unlikely to be the cause but just mentioning it in case anyone else had this issue starting around Oct 23, 2015.
As much as I hate to do it, I guess I'll have to get a new phone. Just no other solution I can see unfortunately.
For anyone finding this posting through Google, currently there is no VoLTE (Voice over LTE) support in the Nexus 5 on T-Mobile. If that is available when you're reading this, then you might look into enabling VoLTE and seeing if you can make voice calls using that. Based on my reading it seems like VoLTE is a software update (perhaps requiring the provider to support the device as well), but the consensus seems to be that VoLTE on Nexus 5 on T-Mobile is unlikely to happen. But they support it on the Nexus 6, so maybe there is some way it can be done on the Nexus 5. Also Wifi Calling on T-Mobile is not available for the Nexus 5. The consensus there is that the stock Google/T-Mobile ROMs are unlikely to ever add Wifi Calling support for the Nexus 5, but perhaps CM 13 or Android Marshmallow do or will have Wifi Calling support built in, so there may be some possibility of getting Wifi Calling using those.
Did you try checking the cell antenna? That was my issue, I just tapped it back in place and my N5 has been fine ever since.

If you mean the ones with the long wires, then yes, I checked those. Actually I checked pretty much everything inside the phone. According to this excellent disassembly video: youtube dot com/watch?v=OPuCmfhzgbg , there are lots of antennas and antenna contacts. So many that he doesn't get to all of them until 20 minutes into the video. But still, I checked all of those and they looked ok. There must be some damage somewhere, just too small for me to spot. He also identifies "external test ports" for some of the antennas. I don't know how those are used or if they would be useful to debug this issue, but for anyone else experiencing this, you might try looking into those.

I'm having the same problem on my Nexus 6 and don't know what PA is and how to change it
My S3 died last week so I purchased a Nexus 5 and I've had nothing but issues with it since.
In 6 days it has dropped network about 10 times and just displays 'Emergency calls only' until I reboot it. It seems to be completely random.
Twice it has done it whilst streaming over 4g from YouTube, but it has also just done it whilst dormant overnight. I woke up the other day to find 'Emergency Calls Only' despite it being fine when I went to sleep.
After searching google I can now see that this seems to be a common issue with Nexus 5.
I'm seriously considering taking it back and getting something else, although I'd love to keep it if it works properly. Does anyone know the cause of the issue or have any workarounds? As I use the phone for out of hours calls for work, I can't afford to have it drop network whilst in my pocket and me not know about it...

OK so I tried re-inserting the sim but still dropping network. The weird thing is that it has done 3 times in the exact same location on my way to work whilst I've been streaming. It's as if it loses 4g signal in that location but then fails to switch to 3g and instead I get left with no network connection / no bars (empty triangle). It then fails to pick up the network again until I reboot (tried re-registering on network and airplane mode on/off).

OK so re-inserted sim and spoke to O2 who said settings are ok. However, it did it again this morning in the same location. That's 12 times in 8 days I've had the phone, 4 of those in the same location (give or take 100m).
I think I'll take the phone back before unlocking bootloader and trying a new radio, but any other suggestions before I do that ? Factory reset ?

You have drops in the same location? Is that only with the N5 or with other phones too?

I never had it with my S3 in 2 years, using the same route into work every day. I can't remember my S3 ever dropping network once....or if it did it picked up the network again automatically. Only difference was I wasn't on LTE with that.
It's not just that location though, it's happened 8 other times in other place nowhere near. I only made note of the same location because it's where I get off the tram coming into work. This morning I wasn't streaming or anything, it was just in my pocket, but I'd installed light flow to audibly alert me when it lost connection.

Maybe set it to 3g instead of LTE, or else RMA/send the device

Yeah I've seen suggestions about changing to 3g, but that defeats the object of me having an LTE phone and paying for 4g service. Thanks, I think I'll take the phone back. My mate has an N5 and although he said he'd experienced it in the past, he hasn't since being on 4.4.3 / 4.4.4

OK so I've been and swapped my N5 for a new one...they also gave me a new sim. Fingers crossed !!
I guess I am too late to add anything but anyway here is what I did and may be of help. After pulling out the sim, use a pencil eraser and rub it across the contacts on the sim card. If the contacts somehow get too much oil residue from finger tips or other "impurities" on the contact, you will get incomplete contacting sometimes and it works other times. The eraser will clean those contacts up for a better dirt free connection. When I was a electronics tech in the hi tech field, I fixed many issues that were just contact problems and the eraser did the trick. I have had this same problem on my other phones (blackberries and androids) and it seemed to work.

Thanks. Either the new phone or the new sim seem to have fixed the issue. I've not had a network disconnect since (been 5 days now).
