[Q] New Battery Calibration - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought a new battery for my oneplus one from vifocal.com and I think its original battery. The battery seems to be very poor. I use my phone for 1,5 hours from which the screen is on for about 1 hour and the battery has drained down to 50%. Yesterday as my phone went to zero I turned it on in recovery mode to keep the screen on as long as possible to really kill the battery and the screen stayed on for at least 2 hours. How is that possible if the battery indicator shows already 0%. Anyways I believe the battery drops down to 0% even really there is a lot of juice in the battery. Is there anyway to calibrate the battery so it would show the correct percentage and is there anyway to tell how big is the battery really? whether I got a fake one or not. thanks

I've had an opposite issue few times - phone was shutting down while it was show that it still had battery (20% was the worst case). I fixed it by discrharging fully, then letting the phone charge all trough the night. this was the recommendation that I found on OPO forums from someone from their team.

[Q] Draining battery on first use?

Hi guys
I should be picking up my SGS2 today and I was just wondering what exactly I should be doing with the battery? I've read in a bunch of places that draining the battery fully and then recharging it fully gives better battery life, but I've also read this:
Lithium ion batteries do not respond well to full discharge, you will see reduced capacity and early failure if it happens too often. In any case it is not possible to overcharge the battery on a BlackBerry because the battery and phone have enough intelligence to control the charge (unless the battery is already defective).

(this is from crackberry.com but you get the idea)
What's the best thing to do?
And on Android phones, when the battery indicator shows 20% or something, is that when the phone is going to die? Or will it die at 0%? Obviously at 20% it would be to protect the battery but maybe Android has been programmed to show 0% when the battery is actually at 20%.
Thanks,
Elliott

The manual is probably stored on the phone, at least my new Ascend II came with its stored on the phone, you have to goto the big menu (forgive me for not knowing the technical term for it) to find it however
i got my battery fully charged...then in the first day i discharged it till 10% at least that's what my phone was saying
i read too that the new li-ion batteryes do not need to be "formated" (fully discharged till the phone dies and then fully charged with the phone turned off) in android case i think that thing is not posible coz it needs at least 5% to pass the bootloader and then begin to charge
anyway in my manual it says that the battery will begin the normal state after 8 days of use, until then it may disschage quick
i have a motorola defy
Calibrate the battery. Charge the phone while its switched off for about 6 hours, and then use the phone untill the entire battery runs out and it switches off on its own. After this, the phone should be able to use the battery properly.
i just used my galaxy and made it empty, then charged it full.
nowadays i have runtimes from 3days (72 hours) and then its @ about 5%
there seems to be a lot of back-and-forth regarding whether or not draining a battery is healthy; i drain my iphone battery down to zero about once a month and the battery has been doing fine for two years . . . whether it would be doing just as well without the draining time is anyone's guess.
I have always been under the impression that lit-ion batteries do not need any kind of special care or break in. But since our phones estimate the charge, we should occasionally let the battery run out to reset the calibration in case it gets screwed up.

I don't think you need to worry about draining the battery till it's dead. My phone dies often and the battery is still kickin It's my understanding, that the purpose of draining the phone before you charge it is to calibrate what the OS says for charge remaining to the battery's actual charge.
Or something like that...
Hi all,
I have my sgs 2 since June and it's working pretty well apart from the battery drain which is very harmful in my daily life
I've recently flashed the Cognition 1.30 (last friday). Before that, my sgs was able to last the entire day before discharging with a moderate use (10-20 mn on games, few sms, 15 mn consulting mails, 1 hr on internet). Since i've flashed with the cognition Rom, the battery drain is really awesome!!!!!!
I fully charge the phone (switched off) then when i switch it on and the phone stays idle, after 1 hr or so, i've already lost almost 20%. When i'm on internet or playing games, the battery loss is approximatively of 1% per min.
I've made a full wipe and recalibrated my battery so normally it should at least last a day and thats not the case.
Could somebody help me or should i buy a new battery and test it ?
Because i relly like this rom and from others users, it has a good feedback concerning the battery use

[Q] Weird Battery Problem??

This happened twice today..
For e.g: If my battery is showing 15% and then i restart my phone it suddenly shows 50% remaining..
Am using Battery Indicator to show me in % how much is remaining (though even the htc battery shows the difference in this case)
Any idea why is this happening and how to solve this??
Oh and how to stop the: Show Me app?? Keeps restarting and sucking my battery..
Could someone please help me out here with this weird problem??
It keeps happening everytime i restart my Sensation..
Try wiping your battery stats from CWM.Then charge battery fully>drain fully>then charge again it should be calibrated. oh and use startup cleaner in the market.

Its a 1 day old Sensation.. Havent rooted it yet..
I saw the same with my mine. I allowed the battery to drain until the phone shut off and recharged over night to 100%. I did that for a few cycles and mine seems fine now.
The battery % indicators only show what the phone software *thinks* it currently is.
The Sensation battery ranges from approx 4200mV (full) to 3000mV (empty).
The problem is sometimes the phone thinks those numbers are different. E.g. when you turn on your phone for the very first time, or flash a new ROM, if your battery was half full at 3700mV the phone would then think that was the 100% level (why they say charge a battery fully for a long time before turning your phone on for the first time).
This leads to various funnies such as a battery seemingly staying full for ages (the phone thinks 100% is much less than 4200mV so until you drop to the phones level your battery %age doesn't go down), and seemingly rapid drains where you end up with less than 10% left - but probably find in reality if you left it your battery would go on for ages at 0%.
Over time it learns, but best to wipe your stats after a long charge so it knows that 4200mV is 100%, and then don't charge your phone again until it physically runs out of juice so it knows what is 0%.
Another useful tip is to install the free BatteryLife widget from CurveFish from the market. That shows you the current voltage level as well as %age, so armed with the knowledge that full = approx 4200mV and empty = approx 3000mV you get an exact idea of how much you have left.
Mine does the same thing even draining/charging for few cycles

What did you do about it?
Anyone know what to do about this to an unrooted phone??
Or is this a defective piece and i should get a replacement??
Mines has done the same but I haven't had the chance to calibrate it yet to know if that'll help. It has helped on previous phones. I don't think your device is defective though.

How do you calibrate an unrooted device??
I think it calibrates itself after a few charge/discharge cycles. Always charge it a lot longer than when the green light comes on (because if the phone thinks the 100% level is a lot lower than it should be, that green light may come on early), and for the first couple of charges let it dry out rather than topping up.
And install that BatteryLife widget from CurveFish, then you can look at the voltage. 4200mV = full, 3000mv = empty, regardless of what your battery %age says. Mine currently says 51% and 3753mV.
Having the same problem here, restarted my phone afew times now and the battery % keeps going up, then dropping rapidly! :s

Going nuts!! Battery...

Have to charge almost twice a day... I believe it happened after latest 1.45.531.1 update....
Disabled all animation, got auto adjust for display, disabled all what I could.. Still gives me 12 -16 hours on standby only....NOT even using the phone!!!!
Does anyone have something like that??? Or there is some remedy I skipped?
Sorry if I repeat someone's question.
Running full stock, HTC battery.
Thanks in advance!!
Tester.
PS. Recently exchanged the phone.... First one R.I.P......died completely, didn't even charge.
Is there a chance they swapped a refurbished one on me??? How to find out???
can you provide a screenshot of the battery usage graph? also, have you tried getting an aftermarket, bigger battery such as the anker?
I was the same way as you. I checked my battery graph, and standby was using something like 80% of the battery with almost everything turned off. By the time I got home from work I would need to charge it immediately. I bought one of the Anker batteries on Amazon for $15 bucks or so, and I'm now getting about 2 days for a charge. I don't know what it was with my battery, because it sounds like my experience wasn't typical, but I didn't really feel like going through HTC when I could just pay the $15.
I'm with ya...
This phone was running PERFECT prior to the HTC update. Now I'm having a plethora amount of problems, including the battery. For example, prior to the update I would get 13-16 hours on HEAVY usage... Moderate usage? Try a day or day in a half. Now take today for example, I unplugged my phone a little before 7am and I had 20 something percent 4 hours later.
I'm telling you, that HTC update really messed this phone up IMO.
Thanks, guys!!
Will try to get Anker battery, I believe it's 1900 mAh.
But again something running on the background with that update. We'll see.
I'll try to get the graph, maybe someone'll get some sense of it...
Much appreciated,
Tester.
here are the battery stats...
Display..........74%
Cell standby...13%
Phone idle......11%
Voice calls......2%
THAT'S IT!!! Nothing else is running...... SUX...
Still gives 12 - 16 hours of life on almost idle......
I hate to say it,but if you're battery's dying a lot faster after an update,a bigger battery won't help much.
I'd be getting in touch with HTC and ask them what the heck is going on.
Really annoyed with the battery performance. I checked and only display is using 90% of battery. Tried everything to reduce it but no change.

I've had the same issue since the update. My battery drains at a ridiculous rate. I've become really frustrated with the phone since. I rooted it and flashed a custom ROM in hopes of solving the problem but it's the same deal.
I've confirmed it's not the battery either since I've got another one I've tried and only get the same results. Even with Juice Defender running I get nowhere as great a battery life as I did before the update
I'm doing decent 8hrs 20,mins on batt. With 40% left mostly text and internet browsing

Try clicking the graph at the top of the screen it will give you another screen that shows awake/screen time etc. Is your phone going to sleep when you screen turns off?
I was having the same problem and realized that some app was keeping my phone awake even though the screen was off. I uninstalled 80% of the crap I had installed and now my phone sleeps like it should and battery lasts amazingly long time.

How can you tell if your phone is going to sleep when you lock the screen? What is a good method for this? And if I find it its not sleeping when it should, is there a way to find the culprit easily?

Click on the graph in battery stats, it should show awake time and screen on. If your awake time is constant when the screen on time isn't, then chances are you've got an bad app somewhere preventing the phone from sleeping
my battery life was plain **** on 2.3.3., device was running hot all the time (=waste of energy), charging took ridiculous 4h+! When I took it off at the charger around 23:00 the battery was dead at 14:00 the next day with most time being idle!
Since my update to 2.3.4 things got so much better. charging takes around 2h and battery finally lasted a whole day and had 40% juice left in the evening.
Since I got my 2 Ankers+charger for 20$, battery life is crazy now. Been on one charge for 2d2h and still had 16% left. Pushmail on, wifi on (cellular data only when not at home), brigthness at 100%, taking video, pictues and some navigation, messaging and phonecalls. Oh yeah and a few minutes of flashlight use
I would say between slight and medium use.
If 2.3.4 worsened your batterylife, contact HTC or your vendor.
I now replaced the battery at 16% with the other Anker because I still need to do my 5 charge cycles on that one to calibrate it.
Here's an example of the graph. At the bottom you can see awake and screen on time. I pulled phone of charger last night, did some browsing, then ran for an hour with music playing in the background (you can see the small green bar on awake even when screen is off). After I surfed a little and left it off the charger when I went to bed. The phone is properly sleeping when the screen is off and almost 16 hours and still have 62%.
Before I uninstalled the apps, the awake time was solid green across the screen.
Anker battery worked wonders on my device. Before I would have to throw it on the charger after lunch as I like to go for a beer after work and the stock battery would never make it that far... Now when I get home from the bar I still have ~30% battery. Anker battery FTW!
flash a custom rom and u will go gaga over ur battery life. definitely works for me. on standby overnight drain 0-1%.
I found out that if you don't have strong signal at your location your battery drains pretty fast that's why I always connect my phone to WiFi at my apartment where my phone looses signal sometimes. now I lose just 1-2% of power during a night.
Sorry to hear about your battery troubles. A couple days ago I rooted and switched to "Android Revolution HD 3.0.4" and my battery life seems pretty solid. I wasn't having battery life issues prior to this though.
I'm currently in the process of calibrating the battery:
- drain it mostly
- turn off
- plug it in overnight while still off
- in the morning unplug, wait 15 minutes, replug for a few hours; do this ONLY ONCE or you may damage the battery
- power on, immediately go to recovery, advanced, reset battery stats
- start normally
- drain battery until it shuts down; a continuous stress test or stability test app is probably ideal
- once it shuts off, turn it on again to double-check that it's dead; it should only come on for a second or two
- while off, plug in and allow to fully charge; no fooling around with plugging/unplugging, just normal
- calibration complete!
I think you can follow a similar procedure (minus clearing battery stats) to refresh the battery calibration even without rooting/custom recovery. I've read the effectiveness is similar. The phone just needs to be retaught what "full" and "empty" mean, all in one charge cycle. If you calibrate it wrong you could have issues with it shutting off while still reading ~15% battery life.
Anyway, as I said, I'm in the process of doing this. Currently I'm in the "drain it" phase... with my screen at maximum brightness (remaining on), overclocked to 1.5 ghz, I've been running "StabilityTest" (from market) for one hour and fifteen minutes. It stresses both cores as well as the RAM. At this time, my battery is at around 30-40% or so, and it's getting really hot! The phone's temperature is reading as 54.8 degrees!
Also, yesterday I used the GPS for about 4 hours before it died, this was prior to any calibration attempt. I think this is within typical battery life considering that the screen stays on.
TL;DR: Maybe you just need to try a custom rom or recalibrate your battery. Miscalibrated battery can be caused by flashing/updating a rom, I imagine even when it's an OTA. Sense is crippling your phone anyway, you might as well give it a try IMHO.
get yourself an anker battery..I havent charged my phone since the day before and now i have 20% left! heavy usage

galaxy j7 battery problem

i think my phone has some serious problems and i'm wondering if it's the battery dying or a short circuit
when i plug it on a charger while of it shows a normal charging image but how it switches from one animation to the other so i can see the status of battery percent it's like a short on the screen happened
it chargers to 100 but when i switch it on it shows mybe 95 but never 100 and if i connect it to a charger to get to 100 it only decreases
it gets warm now days which did not happen and it like drains 50% overnight which is obviously not normal. these two days the battery life is like 4 hours with internet wich with j7's battery it should not happen. if i switch it off and then on again i loose like 20% of battery and if that is all i had i get 0% and the phone doesnt switch on. the phone never had contact with water . it's been 4 days since this started and it happened all of sudden like today my phone stays up to two days at most and i just woke up it barely finishes a day without data and with power saving mode
i'm sure it's not about background apps or any activities because i hard reset it already and i don't have any app. and it's not about wifi or sync or poor network i tried all that. i did everything it didnt help. i could buy a new battery but i'm scared it might be a short because i don't think a battery can just die in one night like this.
can anyone help me with this or it's nothing serious and i have to change the battery

I think you need to replace your battery since the device is already 3 to 4 years old. Replace it with Sony OEM battery.
I had a similar problem few months back then I replaced it and everything's fine now.

Sony stopped the Z3 production years ago. This is a already old device so the battery its having will certainly be an old one.
Which ROM are you using? stock Sony ROM? Or a custom ROM?
Download this app called AccuBattery. Use it for like 2 to 3 days go know your battery's actual capacity and let me know.
Your battery is either draining because some apps are draining your battery massively or outdated battery. There shouldn't be so much loss like in 5 to 10 mins like how you did.
Check your battery stats from that AccuBattery app and if it's bad you'll have to replace it. :good:
I get 4 to 5 hours of screen on time with 70% brightness.
