[Review] iOcean X9, 5.0 inch FHD, 64-Bit MT6752 Octa Core 1.7 GHz, 4G LTE, 3GB/16GB - Android General

EDIT September 17 2015: ATTENTION!
Don't buy this phone unless you get it almost for free.
My initial review of the X9, which is no longer valid, comes first in the text below.
See the edits at the end for details.
___________________________________________________________________________
iocean X9
This review is based on my experience with one of the first regular production samples of the iOcean X9. It is not supposed to be a pre-production sample, but in some ways it behaves like that. The Android 4.4.4 it came with isn’t ready developed for the hardware and it probably never will be. I guess that the company is concentrating on developing the Lollipop rom for it instead. I suspect that iOcean were in a hurry to get this phone on the market and pushed it out too early on an unfinished Kitkat, instead of waiting for a well working Lollipop. It’s a pity because this phone has a lot of potential and deserves a better rom!
Firmware version: X9_20150608-192523
Despite the buggy Kitkat rom I have done many tests and made many observations in the phone. I could rewrite my notes to a regular short review in a wordier format, but in order to be able to come back here and add more information later on, I keep the text in a notelike form. Refer to the edits at the end of this post for updates. I attach some screen dumps of some of the tests I have done. More screen dumps and links to camera test photos etc. will probably come in a later edit.
NOTE:
There will be a part 2 of this review as soon as I have a final release LP rom in the phone. It’s not really fair to review it entirely on a buggy KK or LP Beta.

Design
This phone is thin. Very thin! 6.6 mm in my measurement (specs say 6.5 mm). It also feels very solid and a bit heavy despite the thinness (or maybe due to?). The weight is 145 g (specs say 140 g) but I think it feels heavier, in a good way. The design is very nice. It looks like a tall and very slim iPhone 4. The build quality and the quality feel is very high for the price, but a little bit lower then in a Huawei P8 for example. The texture of the metal frame and the opening for the speaker on the backside don’t give that premium feeling you could wish for. Also the buttons feels a little bit below premium. But for the price the quality feel is really excellent. The power button is in the middle on the right side, below the volume rocker. I don’t like this position as it’s too easy to accidentally switch on or off the phone just by holding it, but it seems standard in many new phones now.
Screen
The screen is excellent. It’s rather bright and vivid and it has good viewing angles. Generally I think that FHD is a bit overkill on a 5” screen. 1280 x 720 pixels is enough “retina” on a 5” screen and a good HD screen is better than a not so good FHD screen, but this is a really good FHD screen. I honestly didn’t expect that for the price.
Cameras
The main camera has a 13 MP Sony Exmor RS IMX214 sensor, which is a well-known and acclaimed sensor that is used in for example Xiaomi Mi4, OnePlus One and Vivo XShot. The camera is excellent and works very well even in low-light. It starts fast, focuses fast, has high sensitivity, little colour crosstalk and most of all the HDR function is really fast (important if you can’t hold the camera really still, or for moving objects). That’s all very rare in Chinese phones no matter what price range they are in. In fact this is the best camera I have ever seen in any Chinese phone (I haven't tried the ones in OnePlus One and Vivo XShot myself). The only little problem I had with the camera is to lock the focus on a certain object in the view by tapping on the screen and get the focus to stay there until I have time to make the shot. Probably that is software related.
The front camera is a Chinese 5 MP OmniVision OV5648. It’s also quite good and it’s even capable of capturing 720p HD video at 60 fps and 1080p HD video at 30 fps.
Performance
The phone is fast, but not as fast as I thought it would be, maybe due to the buggy rom. I get a score of ~37000 in AnTuTu 5.7.1. In Geekbench 3 I get ~4000 in multi-core score, which is almost twice as much as in the MT6732 devices. But as they say in the AnTuTu test, ”many apps only can use one core”, and the single-core score is 810, which is only ~10% better than in a MT6732. In Basemark OS II I get an overall score of 854, which is ~+50% faster than a FHD MT6592 device on Kitkat. In the graphics benchmark in Epic Citadel I get ~40 fps in average in Ultra High Quality mode.
However, the phone is running a buggy 32-bit Kitkat on a 64-bit SoC and I expect the performance to go up a bit once iOcean has put out a final release Lollipop upgrade for it.
Web browsing is fast and the Sunspider 1.0.2 test finishes in ~910 ms in Chrome and ~780 ms in the stock browser (yes the old stock browser is faster than Chrome). The MT6752 seems to be only ~10-15% faster in the Sunspider test than a MT6732, which corresponds to the +10% better single-core score in Geekbench 3. As a reference, my reference phone, an iPhone 6, only need ~330 ms to finish the sunspider test.
Network
4G LTE is really very fast in this phone and I didn’t know how fast download speeds my 4G network was capable of until I got this phone. The phone must have high sensitivity and a really fast 4G modem. Probably it’s true as they say in the specs that it can handle download speeds up to 150 Mb/s. I get over 100 Mb/s down and 27 Mb/s up. In comparison the up speed is a bit low, but that's probably limited by the network, since I only get a few percent higher up speed in my reference phone (and a lot lower down speed at the same time).
WiFi
The wifi has good sensitivity and it measures almost the same signal level in average in WiFi Analyzer as my reference in that, an 8” Xiaomi MiPad (tabs can have much larger antennas). Even on a very remote wifi the X9 and the tab measures the same signal level.
GPS
The GPS is also excellent. It locks in fast and I have never seen so many satellites in view and in use in GPS Test before. In my tests outside my house it sees 21 satellites and use 20, with a 3D fix accuracy of 1 m.
Battery
The battery run time is actually quite good, despite the relatively low capacity battery (2050 mAh), FHD screen and 8-core CPU. It manages to stand the Geekbench 3 battery test for 5 h and 10 min, with a battery score of 3100. The run time and score will definitely increase after a few charges, but already the runtime and score is ~50% better than an iPhone 6 (sorry for the iPhone references but it makes sense I think).
Sound
The sound quality in phone calls is really good and the volume is more than enough. The built in speaker on the backside is useless for music (as usual in phones), but good for phone calls. Also here the maximum volume is more then enough in an office environment. The sound quality in high quality earphones is very high, provided that you switch off the BesSurround function which is on by default. The sound volume is more than enough in good earphones (high sensitivity).
Root
The phone comes unrooted, but it becomes rooted with just a switch in Settings -> Security -> Superuser. In the Superuser setting you can control which apps you have given superuser privileges to. Basically it works in much the same way as SuperSU. Brilliant! Reason enough to buy the phone just for that as soon as it comes with a LP rom. Also there is no bloatware at all installed.
Launcher
The launcher is the CyanogenMod Trebuchet. I’m not sure how and why it ended up in this phone because the phone is not on CM and unlike in CM the launcher can’t be configured in any way in this phone, except the scroll effect between desktop screens, but not between drawer screens. The launcher works well but it’s a waste of a nice FHD screen to only have 5 rows and 4 columns of icons on the desktop and in the drawer and not be able to change that. Hopefully there will be a better launcher in the Lollipop rom.
Dual SIM?
The phone is a dual SIM and dual standby phone, but that's only partly true since one sim slot is a combined SIM/SD slot. Users have to choose between dual SIM standby or single SIM and extended memory, and with only 16 GB storage I would classify this phone as single SIM.
To be continued…
__________EDIT_1___________
I have received an email from an iocean representatve saying:
This problems should be related to the ROM. We have a new ROM update (for 4.4 software) that should be able to solve the problems of your iocean X9. We have already released the iocean X9 Beta version of android 5.1, and we should have a new update for it soon.
Please find below the iocean X9 update link. You can download it and upgrade the ROM, this needs to be done through PC.

I have flashed the rom in the link above and it brought the firmware in my phone from version X9_20150608-192523 to X9_20150624-143035.
However, it didn't change things much. This rom feels a little bit more stable, but the phone is still not stable. Often when I stress it with something CPU or GPU intense, the phone reboots. In the previous rom I had to force reboot it by holding the on button pressed for 10 seconds in the same situation, which might be an improvement, I'm not sure.
__________EDIT_2___________
I tried the Lollipop beta 20150618 with no better result than with the two previous KK roms and I start to believe that the phone has some hardware issue. I used the EngineerMode to switch on the MTKLogger and then stressed the phone to freeze two times. Then I tried to analyze the log files and figure out what's causing the stability problems. However, I'm no expert and can't really figure out what's causing the crash. The engineers at iOcean asked for the log files and they have them now. I'm currently waiting for their result.
__________EDIT_3___________
Yesterday, September 16, 4 months after I purchased this phone I got it back from "repair" from the dealer. It took 2 weeks for it to reach the dealer, and then they held it for a while before they sent it "to the factory", whatever that means. Small brands like iOcean have no factories by themselves, it's just a brand name and an office with a few employees. After the so called repair at the so called factory, the dealer got the phone back and according to themselves, their QC people took care of it and tested it before they sent it to me. All together it took 2 months for this warranty service.
However, the phone is exactly as faulty as when I sent it back for repair. It froze completely at first AnTuTu test and had to be force restarted by pressing powerbutton for 10s. The phone has an obvious hardware error but they didn't open the phone to change any components. All they did was to flash a fresh firmware to it and change the CPU governor and I/O handler. Probably in some belief that it would cool down the phone a bit and get rid of some of the overheating problems, as if that would help much when the max clock freq. still is 1.69 GHz. Changing governor, thermal policy and max clock freq. could have saved this phone from breaking when it was new maybe, but now it obviously have some hardware problem and the dealer did nothing about that when they had it.
To make things extremely much more complicated the iOcean company went bankrupt in July. The rumour has it that they will restructure the company and make a come back, but I'm not so sure. And even if they will be back it's very uncertain if they will support previously relased models at all. The X9 never got the LP firmware it was supposed to have before the company went bankrupt. Not a working KK either.
As an edit on top of this long post I add a warning to buy this phone because: 1. The KK fw it comes with is a disaster. 2. The LP Beta is a disaster. 3. iOcean went bankrupt. 4. There will probably never be an official well working KK or LP fw for this phone. 5. Even with good fw it would overheat a lot unless the clock freq. is lowered a lot.
__________EDIT_4___________
I have now sent this phone back for good to where I got it from. If some other misfortunate X9 owner wants to take over this thread please PM me. Otherwise I will close this thread soon. I'm through with with this device.

thanks for review.
it answered to my question, i was thinking to buy this phone from a few weeks ago...
i wont buy it if iOcean wont release a good rom for this phone.
one question, at this moment: this phone have a notification led?

Yes it has a small notification led on the front. It's a beautiful phone with a lot of potential and I really hope they fix it soon, or there is something terribly wrong with just my device, but I don't think so. Let's wait and see how iOcean reacts to my complaints.

Somebody posted your review on official page of iOcean, i hope they read it and solve the problems. Right now, i'm using as regular phone Jiayu G5s, it's very good phone, but without 4G function and bad GPS... this iOcean X9 looks same but is bigger and thinner and with a good specs...
Another question, 4G can be switched from sim1 to sim2 , or sim2 slot support only 2G?

Yes I know the G5S, it's a nice iP5S design rip-off, especially with the silver and black backside, but I only have good experience with Jiayu devices. Bug free and stable but maybe a bit overpriced. I didn't know the G5S had GPS problems, but it's a 3G phone so I see why you're looking for a replacement.

Yes you can switch the 3G/4G to any of the slots in the settings, so there's no need for physical swap. Only one can be 3G/4G at a time though.

What a ugly launcher... it is the stock one?
Also, we're waiting your feedback about battery life, 2100mAh for an 5 inch fhd display seems to be not enough for a day, even in a normal use, with moderate talking and mobile data/wi-fi on all the time...

Yes and no. The phone has the Trebuchet launcher, which has a theme chooser. It comes with 6 stock themes and in the pic I posted I was on the ugly "Sky" theme. Next time I might be in the girly "Pink" theme!

I added battery information in the original review above. Like the MT6732 SoC the MT6752 seems to be very energy efficient. In fact it seems to be even more energy efficient than the MT6732. I get 5 h and 10 m out of it in the Geekbench 3 battery test (screen on) and that value will increase for sure. In my MT6732 device with a 5" 1280x720 display and a claimed 2250 mAh battery (it's not) I get less than 4.5 h in the GB3 battery test and that phone easily lasts a day. But of course it depends on how you use your phone. Remember that an iPhone 6 only lasts ~3.5 h on a full charge in the GB3 battery test.

can you tell me where did you buy it and how much you paid for?
I was looking for it, but nowhere is in stock...

I don't want to say how I got it at this stage, but it's an official production phone and not a pre-series phone. I know that Geekbuying had it for pre-orders before @ $249, but they seem to have pulled it off for orders now. Maybe it's not out for pre-orders any more because of the problems I'm also experiencing. I mean I'm not the only one who got one of the first regular production X9's.
At present I'm having a direct contact with iocean about the problems I'm experiencing with my phone. I'm thinking that if the problem is software related, it has something to do with the thermal management. It freezes and reboots when it gets stressed and consequently a bit hot. But of course that sounds more like a hardware problem.
It's up to you if you want to take the risk and buy it from some less known source, but make sure you get some warranty then. You have read my review so you know that it could be a fantastic phone without the freezes and reboots that I'm experiencing.

they released a BETA version of Android 5.1 for iocean X9, did you try it?

I have it but I didn't want to try it because the KK rom I have was supposed to be stable, and still it's far from stable in my phone. If I install a buggy beta I have no clue to what comes from software bugs and what comes from hardware malfunction. I might give it a spin later.

i supose it can't be worst then stock kk rom ...

Hi
Thank for the review. I've mine in hand since 2 days. I have the same rom (Firmware version: X9_20150608-192523)
--- :
Sometimes it's getting HOT, very HOT
It tried Google map and... i was able to see the battery lowering at sight. 1% every 20sec. Very funny or not
I don't think kitkat is good with octo core managing
+++ :
All running well and fast
thin, nice
No freeze, no shutdown, all good
Phone very hot but seems battery is ok for 1 day.
I think like you about a bad kitkat rom. Hope the 5.1 will be great. At the beginning the phone was a 5.1 phone but seems they run out of time and so we have kitkat. I didn't tried the 5.1 beta rom. I'm waiting the good one.

I also noticed that it gets very hot during CPU/GPU intese processes. My initial thought about the freezes I have was that there was something wrong with the thermal management in the initial KK rom. However, it didn't seem to get much better in the updated KK so now I'm not so sure.
KK works very fine in "old" MT6592 octa core devices, so I don't think that the 8 cores in MT6752 is the main problem.

Nice to hear that it runs smooth without app/system freezes. I suppose you flashed the updated KK in the link above then? If you did that, did you notice any difference in the heat problem? The battery is definitely good enough for a days use and more. Also, if I buy the thinnest 5" FHD phone on the market at present, I don't expect it to last much more than a day. I'm happy with the battery time.

Yes, it was promoted as a LP phone when I decided to get an early one. Then they changed the specs to KK. I tried the LP Beta but it was no improvement and I don't have time to be an unpaid beta tester right now, so I went back to the 20150624 version again. Also I wanted to be on KK for the EngineerMode, MTKLogger and MTK Catcher to work like I'm used to.

Nice review

Yes I already did that before but I'm not sure if it makes any sense because the phone easily reaches the max speed in my network. I get 8/3 Mb/s in HSPA and 27/7 Mb/s in HSPA+ (H+). I think the 3G H+ is DC-HSPA but I can't check that easily. I should be able to get up to 32 Mb/s with DC-HSDPA in my network with good signal.

thanks for reply...
i just replaced my Jiayu G5S with an Xiaomi MI 4i black and there's no differences between them, max speed on H+ is under 7 Mbps... If i put my sim in other regulary phone i can get easily ~27 Mbps.
So, i keep an eye to this iOCEAN x9 , i like it and probabily i'll buy it when it get a good firmware.

I don't think it will be long before the LP firmware will be out in official release form. A few weeks at the most. The bug-/to-do list isn't very long at the moment.
Off topic:
I had a Mi4i to test for a while and it had the WCDMA 850 and 2100 bands. The 850 band is only used in Asia as far as I know. In Europe it's 900/2100 everywhere I think. Can it be that your network has a higher speed on 900 MHz than on 2100 MHz? Then your Mi4i is partly incompatible with your network. There are probably different versions of the Mi4i for different markets. Mine was bought in Thailand and they have 850/2100. The JiaYu G5S don't have HSPA+.

Neken N6S - Review (MT6592, 2/16GB, 5.0" 1080p, 3000mAh)

Introduction:
Hi,
been looking around for a while but not much attention seems to be given to Mediatek phones here on XDA.
I got one anyway since the performance seems to be rather good and compared to some brands that are well established in the 1st and 2nd world the Mediatek phones are sometimes even better. (Sorry Sony! But your TN displays are horrid.)
Picked Neken N6S from other available competitors in the price range of $200 - $250 shipped to Europe.
More about competitors and different options later.
Specifications:
Neken N6S
2GB DDR2 RAM
16GB ROM = 2GB app space, 12GB user space, ...

OTG: Yes
Dimensions: 141.7x70.5x10.9mm (2000mAh, presented)
Dimensions: 142x71x11.9mm (3000mAh, real measured, larger battery adds 1mm of thickness, rest is as precise as I can get but it's quite close to presented dimensions)

F. cam: 8.0 Mpx
R. cam: 13.0 Mpx
CPU: 8x1.66 Ghz
GPU: Mali-450 MP4 (MP4 = 4 cores, basically 4 Mali-400 cores)

Proximity sensor: Yes
Light sensor: Yes

2G: 850/900/1800/1900
3G: 2100 (been to a screen that shows the bands, but don't know how to get there again, if it was some app or settings menu option, there were some other 3G bands but I can't test them, it all works on 2100 MHz here.)
Package:
Bought from Neken on aliexpress/alibaba. (Yes, from Neken directly it seems, hence the option to get the larger battery without buying the standard one as well and lower price due to avoiding resellers aka websites that resell phones)
Price: $238.4 including DHL (3 days shipping, arrived in 2.5 days once DHL had it in hands), excluding tax.
Total price: cheaper than Motorola Moto G 16GB single SIM, cheaper than Sony Xperia SP, cheaper than Samsung Galaxy S3, ... I say it's a steal if it will work at least for a couple years :good:
Contents:
Neken N6S, extended battery back cover, 3000mAh battery, screen protector installed, 2 spare screen protectors, clear hard case (fits only standard battery, not the extended 3000mAh), 1.0A charger (got US plug, probably only US plug available, should work with an adapter in EU too, don't have adapter yet), headphones (better than the ones I have from Nokia), USB cable for charging and connecting to PC, manual (Chinese and English if I remember correctly), ...
Bought separately:
Clear TPU case for Neken N6. Yes everything from N6 fits N6S, more importantly the TPU case can also be used with the extended 3000mAh battery
They will tell you it can't be, it was designed for the standard 2000mAh battery, but I risked it and got it anyway.
The case fits, to my surprise the backside and whole case is not thin, it could be 2mm thick so it does not really stretch but it fits anyway, it's snug but it locks on all 4 corners no problem and all the edges lock as well.
Pictures:
Unprocessed pictures.
New, with dust under the screen protector, fixed it later.

And unobtrusively illuminated when touched. They are touch buttons below the screen. That means you get true 1920x1080px of screen estate to use. Darn it, forgot to zoom the wallpaper.
The back.
Almost default home screen.

Some are done without limited CPU some maybe with, I limit the CPU by default to save battery.
All done at 1920x1080px (unless benchmark forced it otherwise), 1080p is really taxing for mobile GPUs.

Yellow can be a little to the green side on lowest brightness.
Blacks are enhanced, it seems to hit the limit at 10 or 11 which looks black.
White seems to be alright, goes all the way and only 255 looks like pure white, 254 can be distiguished.
Gamma looks like 1.4, but it doesn't seem off to me. Yes the blacks can be seen sometimes as dark but that's about it.
GPS Test:
No signal inside a concrete building.
All tests outside walking on a road, field, forest.
Strength usually around 30. Probably doesn't go over 40. Is it good or bad?
Lock time after a fresh start usually 20 - 70s. If it had GPS lock before, then it locks instantly.
Some apps are better than other when it comes to getting a location.
Speedtest:
WiFi connected to an old router with WiFi N, 65 Mbps.
30/30 Mbps network connection.
The phone maxes it no problem to 30/30 Mbps.
Pros & cons:
Decent screen, maximum size of 5.0" that I found still pocketable and usable one handed although two hands are more comfy.
1080p can be a bit hard on the GPU when gaming but even Real Racing 3 runs fine on the default high setting. I turned it down all the way to low but it wasn't a slideshow on the default high setting either. Other games ok as well graphic performance wise, but most are boring.
It is truly a shame game developers forget to give users the basic graphic configuration settings so one could easily in-game change to lower resolution, some offer lower graphic details.
Device did not come rooted.
With 3000mAh battery it can play 4.5h of 1080p 8bit video/movies using MX Player HW+ video decoding and software audio decoding, movies are standard PC quality, around 3-4GB each, no low bitrate things but just small enough to fit on FAT32. This is played at FULL brightness, with headphones, cellphone ON (3G), WiFi OFF, BT OFF, location OFF, Clear Motion ON, CPU saving ON. Does not get hot with HW decoding.
Can also play 20 Mbps 1080p 8bit videos using HW decoding. And movies encoded in 1080p 10bit via software decoding but it is using the CPU quite a bit, it has the power to decode it smoothly though.
It is 4h of playback to hit 15% warning and then another nearly 30min to hit 4% warning.
Playing a lower complexity video at minimum brightness it would last "forever" (that's what GSM arena uses for their crappy testing, SD video and airplane mode, etc.).
The OS seems to have a few enhancements, Clear Motion that makes playing video smoother, I don't know how, but it could be interpolating frames to get higher framerate. It really works and a low fps footage from a camera plays more smoothly with it.
I use it.
Next are two audio enhancements, first works IMHO as a equalizer when headphones are plugged in and enhances middle frequencies.
The speaker booster seems as a normalization and makes quiet things more loud which can be useful for movies and playing them without a boost in the video player. But this works everywhere, even for playing songs where it is noticeable too I think.
I don't use the earphone enhancer but I do use the speaker booster since the speaker is not extremely loud.
Headphones are a bit the opposite, I basically use minimum volumes with the two headphones I have.
Device info:
Front camera is not very good, I would not say it has 8Mpx but maybe 5Mpx but still nothing spectacular in terms of noise.
Rear camera is ok, 13Mpx seems real, since the lens is tiny and all that jazz of phone camera is there and it will never measure up to a decent compact camera. Think what you want but iPhone's camera sucks too. Don't expect wonders. Camera operation seems as fluid as I've experienced on Samsung Galaxy S4. The burst shooting mode is fast, I mean it really is fast and much faster than my older compact camera. Focusing is alright, nothing bad. It can track objects too if you like that. Panorama, HDR and so on. Flash is fine, can't compare to other phones.
Rear camera is protected if you use the extended back cover with larger battery, the lens is not sticking out anymore. With the TPU case on the lens is sunk inside.
Touchscreen is ok but rarely some applications seem to have an issue. Real Racing 3 likes to lose touch for gas pedal when holding it down for minutes during some races, RR3 also rarely loses orientation which means no steering or no steering to one side. ON/OFF of RR3 fixes it. LCD Tester today acted up in one of it's tests by moving to the next like if I touch it. Strange because there were no ghost? touches anywhere else at the moment when I moved around but only in that test. So go figure I think the touchscreen is alright, just some applications are not very good at handling the controls.
Screen looks nice, not over saturated, yay! The blacks are a little enhanced though. Whites are fine.
Screen is usable whole, no software buttons. At 1920x1080px (440 PPI) it is impossible to see the individual pixels as close as I can focus. Nice to read text like ebooks and websites. Brightness is alright during the day, outside, I would prefer lower minimum though but doubt any phone goes that low by default.
SD card works, use my older 8GB card, lost some screenshots and such since it crashed but after reformatting it in the phone itself it works alright so far. Will replace it with a bigger and newer one, it did act up in my older phone too.
App space is 2GB and I did not manage to fill it yet and I did install lots of things to try them out.
2GB RAM seems alright, probably even 1.5GB RAM would be ok, but 1GB for Android seems a little bit small if one uses the smartphone a lot, like gaming especially or web browsing.
16GB ROM has nearly 12GB user usable and it is enough space for me especially since I can add as much as I like via an SD card.
Buttons work alright, they do have a tactile feedback, for me it could be stronger but that's me used to robust buttons
Proximity sensor only recognizes near and far, works fine to turn off the screen when calling.
Light sensor works fine but seems to have only about 8 levels approximately/guessing, at least that's what apps show.
Compass works, which is something not all Mediatek phones have.
All the other sensor goodies are there, see Antutu device info.
Phone charges alright via USB from PC, can be turned into charge only and charges best when not being drained at the same time, so of course it charges fastest when it's off, or screen is off, WiFi off, etc.
Not sure it supports fast charging, don't have a fast charger or know how it may detect fast charging on the charger. Had it plugged to a 30A USB port but it has data lines disconnected, no fast charging happened.
Calls are definitely better than my old phone, not very loud which is a shame but the audio is clear and has a decent quality compared to older phones.
Calls and playing music seems alright and does not drain much.
Screen and CPU/GPU hungry applications are the main cause of battery drain then having unnecessary connections enabled, like WiFi, BT, GPS.
TPU case fits both standard and extended battery variant. You just have to find a seller of the color option you like.
So far, 3 weeks later, I am satisfied and find no bugs in the phone.
Build quality is good as I have nothing to complain about. Compared to other phones, I've seen/had similar quality from Nokia.
Bezels are small, spaces between parts are minimal and only sometimes the plastic bulges a tiny tiny bit around the middle close to the buttons on the side. But this took me some time to find out by gliding my fingers around the phone. Had similar thing on a Nokia phone, that's just how plastic works. Back cover snaps well and holds. Phone seems to be all around plastic except the front where the screen is and I guess the black around the display is some metal. Paint seem good. The white back is painted as well and looks a little pearl like if you know what I mean. So it is not just pure white "ugly" plastic.
Installed screen protector was probably put by the seller and it had 3 dust particles under it. Cleaned it up later in my very dusty place, no idea how am I going to ever install a screen protector here, this certainly ain't dust free place
The protector is matte but I got used to it. The screen is glossy though.
No idea if any of the 3 spare screen protectors I have are glossy. But they are two different types/styles/source than the one that is on the phone. Got 2 with the package as gift and another one surprisingly with the TPU case.
GUI has app drawer and holding the home button brings the fake process manager I guess it's called nearly useless app manager that allows you to switch between apps but will not fully/truly close or kill apps if you remove them from there.
Other options:
Jiayu G4S MT6592, 2/16GB, 3Ah - not available at the time, didn't want to wait for it even though I knew it's gonna come out in April with G5S, seeing how overpriced and out of stock Jiayu phones can be I gave it a pass and the price may jump up after the initial sale of the first batch.
iOcean X7S MT6592, 2/16GB, 3Ah - more expensive, weird option for 3000mAh battery resulting in a possible Frankenstein.
Motorola Moto G - difficult to buy in Europe, only single SIM, no SD card, only 1GB RAM, ... seems like unfair comparison with MT6592 phones but Moto G costs more than them.
Sony Xperia SP - the display on most Sony phones is an old and outdated TN panel with poor viewing angles, had it in my hands and it felt like the same poor display I had on my Nokia E51, even more expensive than Moto G, $300 or so.
Jiayu G4 MT6589T, 2/32GB - was a tempting option at the time, for $226 but a wait for G4S would be wiser.
...
Picked it because it has MT6592 with 2GB RAM and a big 3000mAh battery.
The only other option was iOcean X7S which this told to be a clone of or some such, anyway, iOcean is more expensive and the 3000mAh option is Frankensteined on it I think.
Jiayu makes the only other 3000mAh phones but G4S got released only yesterday and I did not feel like waiting another month, waited long enough already. G4 platform is a nice phone but seeing how long it takes Jiayu to adopt new technologies and how out of stock and overpriced it can be I gave it a pass and did not wait for G4S. It is definitely more boxy like an iPhone is. With smaller screen it is easier to carry around but also harder to work on since the screen is smaller and yes it is noticeable, plus it may not be as good for reading due to lower PPI, still decent though. I would see G4S as a main competitor unless it's price goes up too much after the initial sold out.
G5S is probably fine too but one pays considerably more for the metal body.
At 5.0" or with 1080p, this is IMHO the only option right now when it comes to bigger battery. Unless of course you like the bigger battery option and higher price of iOcean X7S.
Update: Similar package of Jiayu G4S costs around $232 + shipping + tax.
From my POV, it's either G4S or N6S depending on how big a screen you want and if you want 720p or 1080p.
Would not opt out of a decent battery if you use the phone frequently. The cell standby and screen eat power plus does anything that uses the CPU/GPU a lot (games).
Clarifications:
Goal:
sub $300 total price
bigger than 2200mAh battery
decent CPU&GPU
minimal dimensions height and width wise
unlimited thickness since I do not care about thinness war and will rather have a device that runs for several days than a paper thin phone that lasts me a couple hours
no bigger than 5.0" = still pocketable and usable by one hand only
working GPS
decent build quality
English as second language, feel free to point out errors. Surprised?
Vellamo:
HTML 5: 1971
Metal: 622
Sample photos, rear camera:
Panorama:
HDR:
If there is light and the object is still the ISO is low and noise is down, but if the ISO goes up then as always with any mobile camera the noise gets in there. Not something that can't be removed in post processing though. As said before, no phone will match a compact camera, physically impossible. And even most/all compact cameras suffer from noise at higher ISO.

As far as Europe is concerned you have to apply a gps fix
in order to let your gps work correctly.
I followed some instructions on youtube and the result is very good.
Type "android gps fix" on youtube...
root to 4.4.2
hello i want to ask if i can update form 4.2.2 to 4.4.2 android .
Have you found any method to root the phone? I bought one as well, and I need to root it, but haven't found any method to do that so far.

Thanks, I might try it as the initial lock does take some time that I think shouldn't be necessary.

Dunno, I have not had the need to mess with the phone on lower than application level yet.
What would the advantage of having 4.4 kitkat be?
4.2.2 is the most common, all apps work.
I don't think there are any Chinese Kitkat phones, or only a couple of questionable source/quality.

Let me check, I have not rooted it since I found I don't need root really, maybe when I do more with the phone from a programming POV.
Any tool used for MTK6592 should do the trick to root it.
Often they are chinese tools, I downloaded some for sure.
There is a thread about Jiake X3S, I think there is info about rooting MTK6592.
I have VRoot here from several sources and also MTK Droid tools. Probably the most reliable for MTK phones. Also framaroot but don't know about it. Search and you will find, it should be the same for all MTK6592 phones to get root. Shops often sell phones rooted or with optional root.

Phone works fine so far. Real racing still is not as great to control on occasions, no idea if it's a game issue or the controls freezer sometimes as I may lose steering or holding the gas down turns off. But the screen works fine anywhere else.
Most draining is when one fiddles with the phone, not even as much playing a video with HW acceleration, but moving screens and starting, opening, closing, browsing. Apart from heavy 3D gaming of course, that's the biggest battery eater.
Oh BTW, the charger works fine, got a socket adapter from US to EU and works really well, better than USB charging from a computer I think. There must be some trick to allow fast charging over 500mA. Probably the data wires shorted but haven't tried that with my home made USB power supply.
Engineering mode, type: *#*#3646633#*#*
Finally got there again, works for MTK phones.
Trying to update the files manually. Like this.
► How to fix / repair GPS on Chinese smartphones - MTK6592 6589 GPS FIX - S4 jiayu G4 Umi X2 [HD]
Doesn't seem to do anything. Had to create the data folder and I doubt it check the data folder for EPO updates.
The MTKGPS app needs root.
The only thing I find dissatisfactory is the initial fix delay. But I bet it's present on any other phone in this area. Still get an alright signal of 25-35 in GPS test and in debug it does list around 9 satellites.

I got it from Neken via Alibaba/Aliexpress so if anyone is going to have replacement parts it's going to be them since they make and sell the phones.
If I were you I would look there and their homepage to find their contacts and talk to the people, they will not have it listed for sell in the shops probably but could offer it to you if you ask.
I got that way the bigger battery and cover instead of the stock one when ordering my phone, you just have to ask.
Anyone saw an Android update to higher version? Probably not but doesn't hurt to check.

iOcean G7 review

*Moved from different thread - this suits better*
Hello everyone,
just made this review about the iOcean G7 a while ago. I cannot post any links or videos yet so I made a small site, for the single purpose it looks a bit better and I can post the photo's and video I made. chinahardware.info/?page_id=9
I left out all the Antutu benchmark stuff, there is already plenty of that to be found. I hope someone finds it informative

Intro & Specifications
Welcome to this iOcean G7 review
The G7 is not the first phone of the Chinese iOcean company but definitely one with a new design. If you are not familiar with the iOcean company you can look up their website iocean.cc or go to their Facebook page. The phone that had put iOcean in the spotlights was the X7 Youth. It has (still) good specifications with a surprisingly low price, making it a very tempting choice. After the X7 Youth there were more ‘adult’ versions as the Turbo, Plus and Elite, all with different sets of specifications and prices. One thing remained: the design. All the X7 models are the same except for their internal hardware components. With the G7 the designers at iOcean made daring step. They slightly changed the design but more obvious: they changed the size of the phone. Where all X7 versions were enjoying a neat 5 inch FULL-HD display, the G7 has a gigantic screen size of 6.44 inch, technically making it a phablet (phone/tablet).
This devices comes with the latest of the MediaTek processors: the MT6592, an octacore processor with the Mali 450 GPU to support it with graphical applications.
My personal questions were if I would be enjoying carrying this colossal phone around and if the GPS-problems with the MediaTek MT6592 would finally come to an end.

Screen/Display
Let’s start with what is most obvious about the device when you see it: the enormous display. With a 6.44 inch display the G7 is one of the biggest devices I ever worked with. It is quite a bit bigger than the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
For the technicians amongst you: the devices comes with a Retina LTPS display and is an OGS, which stands for One Glass Solution. So the screen will be thin with good viewing angles. Since a large amount of the surface of the phone is consisting out of glass, I am glad they processed the screen with laminated glass, meaning it consists of two or more layers of glass and bonding interlayers before fused together though autoclave or chemically.
The above shows us that the display is big, thin, highly scratch-resistant and with the Retina LTPS it also means the display is bright and vivid. When the screen is on full brightness it is very useable in light areas and outside. I used it for a couple of days now and even on these sunny days I could easily read the screen.
This is supported with a stunning 1920×1080 resolution, granting the screen 342 pixels-per-inch. I used the iOcean X7 with 440 pixels-per-inch and I could see some difference but you would have to look closely and search for it. 342 PPI is still very impressive for a screen size this big and reading text is a real charm on this device. Giving the device a higher resolution screen would not benefit the price and the performance of the G7 and I personally think this was the right decision.
In the box I also found a screen protector which I applied directly but since the layered protection of the screen itself I think this is a personal choice.
Another bonus is the fact that you can operate the device wearing gloves or with wet hands. I found out these few days that the display is highly sensitive and I do no longer need my touch screen gloves in the winter which is a real big plus.
Camera
The camera of the G7 is even being used by iOcean to take photos of the new X8 model, which is coming up halfway in April, for their Facebook page. If the company itself is confident enough about the quality is has to say something, right? The G7 enjoys a 13 mega-pixel rear camera which out-of-the-box shoots at 9.5 mega-pixel. This is probably done to save memory and to quicken up the burst-shoot function. At 9.5 MP all photos will be more than sufficient for most uses: Facebook, Twitter, emailing them to friends/family, etc. Switching to 13 MP decreases the field of view as well a bit of speed in burst-mode but it is still very fast and it is barely noticeable. The front camera is 5 mega-pixel and can be used for conference and video calling or to make the much loved selfie. A trend is to not only increase the mega-pixels of the phone but also the aperture of the lens, meaning more light can travel inside which tends to produce better pictures.
I shot some pictures with the G7 myself and I can tell you they are of very good quality. I used different kind of settings; all photos taken inside were under medium-light conditions and outside it is clearly a sunny day. (They are shown on the website.)
One of the things I like to do with my phone is to watch videos on YouTube, mostly with other people. The low quality of the sound and especially the low maximum volume most of the other Chinese phone suffer from sometimes takes the fun away in doing that but with the G7 that will not be the case. The sound can be set to a very loud level while maintaining good quality with no distortion.
Now, something pleasant happened when I laid the phone on its back while playing music: sound actually got better! Thanks to a very smart design feature the G7 device does not fully touch the surface and thereby covering up the speaker grill. A small tab, looking a bit like a stub of the speaker grill, is attached so room is left between the surface and the device hence the sound waves can move freely. It gives a powerful and full sound which I have not heard with many devices. One small point could be that it makes the phone wiggle a bit when lain down but I highly doubt that would bother anyone.
Overall use & Connectivity
The biggest question for me was whether the G7 would fit in my pocket but even with the flip case it fits. Though it is completely understandable when someone would go for the somewhat smaller X7 or better the X8 in April. This is definitely not a one-handed device and both hands are needed to type. It is very useable for watch movies, series, YouTube and the like as reading and typing text. I am a forced user of the public transport every day and I use that time to read rapports for work, etc. Still not as comfortable as a good physical keyboard, on the 6.44 inch screen it is now also workable to edit and type text.
The overall build quality is very good with no plastic-squeaks, a strongly fit back cover and pretty narrow bezels. The only real point of criticism is that the three android control buttons on the chin of the phone do not lit up so in the dark. This may provide an issue when not completely familiar with the device.
The device supports all normal connectivity frequencies used in the West: for Wi-Fi: 802.11 a/b/g/n for both 2.4G and 5G. For mobile internet: HSPA+ 900Mhz/2100Mhz WCDMA.
GPS
The GPS has been a problem with MediaTek devices since a long time and let me happily start by saying that the iOcean G7 gave me a GPS fix in 3 minutes. This was indoors without any connectivity and updated satellite positions. Outside the same set-up gave me a fix in about 40 seconds. Compared to more expensive and well-known mobile phones MediaTek will always lose the battle but for the average Chinese branded mobile phone user this will be a pretty welcome result.
Conclusion
The iOcean G7 is one of the biggest Chinese phones I have ever handled but also one of the better built and designed. The overall quality of the phone is very good, the camera shoots very worthy photos, the sound capabilities are amazing, playing most games is absolutely fun (no stuttering), display quality is very good at least to say, making the G7 a very enjoyable device for everyday use. Considering all this, the price is very reasonable. If you are looking for an affordable mobile phone with a big display, this is probably the one.
A good functioning GPS and a size that still fits my pocket: my questions are answered, how about yours? Please feel free to post comments or send me a message if you have any more questions.
You can also send me an e-mail: [email protected]
Or look up more information on the official iOcean Facebookpage! Please give them some support and click the ‘like’ button.

I am enjoying the use of the iocean G7. It maybe gigantic but it is not heavy.
Battery life is really good. For light use, you can get up to 4 days. For heavy use, you can get at least 2 days.
Does iocean use a "skinned" version of Android like sense or miui?

Its Android 4.2.2, I have not played with HTC or Miui but it feel like the standard Android. It came with Google Play Store and all the other apps. Don't think I see any Chinese apps.
It actually came rooted as well.

Hello,
My Iocean G7 battery lasts about 1 day (wifi and bluetooth always on).
I didn't find how to install CWM on it so I could do a wipe batterie's data.
Does someone has a CWM for Iocean G7 ?
Thanks
Yes a bit

I had no idea but I did a comparison for you. iOcean did use some sort of theme (not a entire skin) for their Android version but you can switch back to the standard Android look with 2 clicks (icon called Theme) does that.
I am using Themer now but in the video review on my website (chinahardware.info) you can still see the iOcean theme.
Does that answer your question?

In Settings, under Device Administration, I got Superuser which I turn it on.
I bought my G7 from 1949deal - first time buying from them. Order on Thursday and shipped by DHL and arrived on Monday. I bought the brown case which I think is useless. Cannot find the slip-in case on your video.
I don't use Facebook/bluetooth and have turn off the gesture - thats why I think the battery life last so long.

You mean the orange case? Try Aliexpress.com It's a sideways flip-cover (bad quality btw).
Cannot find the Superuser setting you mentioned but I thought that will only appear when you root te phone, right?
How is the battery life on the phone? Better than other Android phones or just pretty similar?

I bought the orange case - its rubbish.
This guy has a slip case - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXMGeWo0W8Q which is like one of those for spectacles.
Not sure if it is 1949deal that rooted the phone before sending out. I learnt of it from the guy in the above video which is why I bought from the same seller as he did. He mentioned about it here - http://mtkforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=559&p=1929

How is the battery life on the phone? Better than other Android phones or just pretty similar?

Battery life depends on how you use it. It has a 3500 mAh battery - huge.
I don't use Facebook or bluetooth or push notification for my GMail. I use Whatsapp, Line, SMS and calls and some surfing.
For light use, I can get more than 3 day. For heavy use, I can get at least 2 days.
I already enjoying the use of the iocean G7. I think its gigantic its not heavy . Battery life is so good. For light use, you can get up to 4 days. For heavy use, you can get at least 2 days. you also use it enjoy it .........................................

The led flash is strong - red light for Whatsapp and green for Line.
Camera is great - people were impress with it when I took photos in a recent vacation.
good day how to root iocean g7 please help.
Bluetooth
The bluetooth is horrible.
There is lag with the headphone bluetooth, sometimes does not pair with bluetooth on the car.
In others features this phone is really good.
I hope that in the next firmware the iocean improve the bluetooth.
G7 flash and recovery
Hey guys,
I am also a proud owner of my G7... I certainly do love it, at the moment I think I have to flash it to a more recent rom since it came with a 4.2.2.
I want to flash to latest but I dont have a custom recovery installed. Will the inbuilt recovery be fine enough?
I am guessing you guys have an idea of what the way to get a recovery and flash it actually... and I use linux with adb and fastboot installed and it can see my device too although I could get a windows computer is necessary.
Thanks

MIUI is always a good choice
http://www.needrom.com/download/miui-by-miuipro-ru-9/
FunTouch OS was also very good
http://www.needrom.com/download/g7-funtouch-os/
To install:
Step 1: From the links above: download the ROM you want and put it on a SD-card. Not in a folder but in the root of the SD-card. Put SD-card in phone
Step 2: Shut down your G7. Not restart but really shut down. Then:
– Power button + volume button up, to enter the recovery mode. (First hold volume up and then press power button and keep volume button pressed until you see the recovery menu)
– Wipe Data / Factory Reset -> delete all user data (use volume buttons to select)
– Wipe Cache Partition -> Wipe cache
Step 3: Return to recovery main interface Install zip from sdcard -> choose zip from sdcard -> Select your ROM
Step 4: Brush complete, restart the phone Patience required – first boot takes a while

What's in the Box:
Tronsmart PS7
Headphones
Micro-USB cable
Power Adapter
User Manual
Screen Protector
First Impressions:
The Tronsmart PS7 is really massive for a phone, but when you consider it's intended purpose as a Phablet, then you'll see it's quite reasonable in size.
Thin bezels make the PS7 appear smaller than it actually is. If comparing to many 7" tablets out there you can see it's smaller.
Size Comparisons:
Tronsmart PS7(7"), iNew i2000(5.7"), Zopo ZP980+(5"), iOcean X7(5")
As you can see the PS7 is a bit larger than the i2000.
It dwarfs the X7.
And the ZP980+
First Start:
When I first booted the PS7 I was a little worried. The first boot took around 90 seconds. This is a little longer than I am used to.
A reboot had the PS7 running in about 18 seconds.
The first thing you notice about the PS7 is the screen. The 1920x1200 screen is HUGE and very BRIGHT!
It's so bright that I had to turn it down to minimum in order be comfortable in a darker room.
The details, colors, and viewing angles are quite good.
No complaints about the touchscreen. It supports up to 10 simultaneous touches.
The PS7 has a good feel in my hands. It's a little too big for one handed use, but lends itself to two hand with no issues.
Often on a larger device with bezels this thin I'll have accidental taps from holding it. I didn't experience that with the PS7.
It's just the right size.
I popped a 64GB microsd card into the back of the PS7, connected to my wifi and was downloading apps within minutes.
The About Phone Screen lists the following items:
Model number:
PS7
Android Version:
4.2.2
Kernel Version:
3.4.39 [email protected] #1 Tue Mar 18 15:25:55 CST 2014
Build Number:
2719_v92_gq3015_20140325
Baseband Version:
MOLY.WR8.W1315.MD.V21.P1, 2014/01/16 15:51
The Tronsmart PS7 comes without root access. I actually prefer it this way. Certain apps tend to be angry if root is detected.
It's good to have a choice.
Cellular Connectivity:
Using the PS7 as a phone is a pleasant experience. I didn't notice any odd echos, and the speakerphone works fine.
It is a little daunting to hold a 7" phablet next to my head, so I recommend a bt headset.
I wasn't expecting 3G to work since the PS7 only supports 850/2100Mhz for WCDMA, but I guess At&t has 3G on 850Mhz around me now.
So I was able to get H speeds.(No H+ though)
Bluetooth:
I tested the bluetooth with a car radio, headset, bt boombox, and keyboards. The PS7 did well in all tests.
Battery Life:
The battery life on the PS7 is very decent. I found that with mixed use the 3500mAh battery lasted me the entire day.
I also found that on standby the PS7 just barely sips power. I managed to get over 4 days(wifi on, checking email every so often, minimal browsing)
For screen on time I was able to stream HD video to the PS7 for a little over 6 hours before I was down to 25% battery.
Personally I'd like to see phones or tablets with a double size battery option, but the 3500mAh seems to last long enough for me.
Wireless Display:
The settings menu has an option for Wireless Display, but there is no where to actually turn it on. I'm told that a new firmware update will fix this problem.
I'll be testing it out with my Tronsmart T1000 Ezcast dongle.
Media Playback:
I tested several apps to check how the Tronsmart PS7 plays media both locally and from the web.
XBMC:
The first one I downloaded was an XBMC stable build. I was expecting it to launch quickly and was not let down. It took about 5 seconds.
I was able to playback many 1080p and 720p files without any issues.
The 7" screen works well with XBMC, and for the first time on a phone I can use the onscreen keyboard!
With 2GB of ram there is plenty left over after launching XBMC.
MX Player:
The only real problem was with the audio codecs. I don't believe the MTK6592 has support for AC3 or DTS audio built in.
I had to choose software decoder for AC3 files and installed the DTS codecs for MX Player in order to get this to work.
Dice Player:
Most files played well in HW mode. The MTK6592 in the is more than addequate to playback 1080p in software decoding mode. DTS and AC3 were properly decoded and played back.
Netflix:
Videos played smooth in HD and subtitles/audio were in sync. At first it seemed that Netflix was having issues. It kept switching between high quality and low quality. A pause to let it buffer quickly ironed that out.
HBO Go:
Everything looked and sounded great.
Crackle:
Works like a charm.
GPS:
Left side indoors Right side outdoors wooded/cloudy area
I had no issues with GPS in the PS7. After turning it on I was locked onto 17 satellites within 12 seconds.(This was on a very clear day)
Accuracy was good within 4 feet. When compared to other MTK6592 phones, it seems like the PS7 has better than average GPS signal.
Compass:
The compass works well.
Google Sky Maps responded properly.
FM Radio:
One of my favorite things about the MTK chipsets I've used is the FM Radio.
The inlcuded headphones act as an antenna for the FM Radio. It's possible to record music and talkshows directly onto the PS7.
The FM Radio app also identifies what song and station are currently playing.
Wifi
Wifi reception is very good. My routers we're on the other side of the house.
Front Camera:
The front camera claims to be 5MP, but is most likely 3MP interpolated to 5MP. Quality is still decent.
Rear Camera:
The rear camera is 13MP, and provides a decent image. The flash works and is timed right, but it could be a little brighter. It's not too great for low light shots.
Considering most 7" tablets I've seen have 5MP rear cameras with no flash, the PS7 does well in this category.

Benchmarks:
I tested the PS7 with Antutu, Quadrant, Vellamo, GFXBench, 3DMark, and NenaMark2.
Antutu:
The PS7 scored 27482 on it's first try.
Quadrant Standard Edition:
The PS7 managed an impressive 14429.
Vellamo:
The PS7 scored a 2002 in the HTML 5 test and 676 in the METAL test.
GFXBench:
3DMark:
NenaMark2:
Conclusion:
The Tronsmart PS7 is a great phablet! This size is just about perfect. It's bigger than most phones, yet small enough to still fit in my jeans pocket.
Screen quality is a huge plus when browsing the web or watching videos. Performance is great even though it's running at 1920x1200 resolution.
I'll never have to carry my phone and my tablet with me. The PS7 replaces both!
My only real gripe with the PS7 is the lack of backlight for the navigation keys. This turns into a non-issue once you get used to the locations.

How to Root the Tronsmart PS7!
It's super easy to get a basic root on the Tronsmart PS7.
Steps:
1)On the PS7 go into Settings-->Security--->Enable Unknown Sources
2)Download and install Framaroot-1.9.1 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2130276
3)Launch Framaroot, Select the "Barahir" option and reboot
4)Enjoy your rooted PS7
Hi, waiting full review
Wooow Tronsmart made Smartphones.
I hope that will be as well as their USB-Dongle !
I just finished the review... and its up!
Also quickly rooted with Framaroot. Now making a backup of the rooted stock rom.
Very interesting device.. but battery seems to be too small for 7". My note 5.3" with 2500mah and it still needs to be charged during the day..

EDIT 6/19
reverted back to 4.2.2 (Ebay crashes on opening item information even on fresh installs/reinstalls on 4.4 and more importantly super-low call and ringer volume on 4.4…so back to 4.2..also 4.2 recovery reliable and stable,.plus has touch)
Screen
Hello,
I just have a question. I haven't read any review about these 7" phablets where they comment about the screen glass. No vendor mention that they have a Gorilla glass, but I want to know if the screen is easy to scratch, or if the included screen protector is any good.
Thank you for your answer.

Do not think this one (have the Orient Phone Mega Pro 7) has Gorilla glass..but no scratches despite some heavy and rough use...only Coolpad 9976A (not even Huawei media pad X1) claims Gorilla glass but you may want to check frequencies for calls etc. I think the protector is good but not smudge-resistant like olephobic screens..but then no worse (maybe better) than the Sony Xperia Ultra Z imo (smudge attractor)
Thank you for your answer. I come from using the Sony Z Ultra. This PS7 model obviously is not as sexy as the Ultra, but the problem is that I broke the Ultra screen and replacing it cost me the same as buying the PS7 new. The screen of the Ultra is really fragile. I hope the one from the PS7 is stronger.

Me too..just sold my Ultra Z today (not that this is the best looking phone but the screen brightness, reflectivity (less) and viewing angles superior to Ultra Z imo...the LTPS stuff is very good...just bought and sold for a significant loss the Sharp Aquos SH-06F (Snapdragon 801/32GB storage/4200maH) (latest model came out last month..awesome for holding as a 7 inch phone felt lighter than even the ultra Z and shorter! (they compressed even top bezel!)...amazing package..BUT..to me the IGZO panel was not as good as the LTPS on this one..also made by Sharp)..the SH-06F was otherwise perfect in every other aspect...and yes, one thing no updates unless on Docomo network (unless the Sharp website would post updates for downloading) though someone said you could change the APN to make it look it wants or is on a docomo APN (even though downloading done through wifi)

I've never noticed the Sharp phone before. It looks really nice. But I bet it is a lot more expensive than the PS7. But that Sharp phone looks like the one to get. Is the screen really that bad, compared to the Sony Z Ultra? It is as tall as the Ultra, and a cm wider. How did you get a hold of it?
It is a shame I didn't join this discussion before.
Apologize to OP if message may not be about Tronsmart completely though is in part

it is almost 4-5 more expensive. You may be interested in the device (links below) (reminds me of the K900 Lenovo I had)...dialer looks similar also Intel Clover Trail CPU (however I remember rooting was not easy-but the k900 community evolved significantly with folks bundling root in the rom itself..who knows it probably even has deodexed rom now-there is a thread on xda but am talking of k900 lenovo)
noticed dd2 ram (some of these devices have ddr3 so not sure how much of a difference it makes when paired with a diff processor such as the Intel one..EDIT: they claim it is LPDDR2 which they say is better than DDR3)
again check frequencies as just saying 2g/3g does not mean much if your frequencies are not covered

more on the Sharp..although tablet news is saying it is 680USD, docomo's own site which is the only original source for this phone as it is docomo-branded has it over 88000Yen which takes it to the mid 800s USD. And then you need to get it sim unlocked-SO..
it is much more expensive..like over 4 times (on Ebay..one would think it was a ridiculous price and it was..but me being gadget buff got it-anyway sold it swallowed my loss learnt my lesson)...the screen had color/brightness shifts (like a TN panel) when tilting the phone from side to side on both axes..this is irritating as it is on laptops where you would move around less but even more so on a handheld device. IGZO may have better color gamut etc but seems to have worse viewing angles compared to this LTPS stuff that is on this Orienphone/Ulefone/Tronsmart/Aonex also made by Sharp..think IGZO has lower power consumption--you can search and read up on these as I do not know much about these.. however it has broader frequencies, awesome form factor for a 7 inch, super lightweight, very fast, bigger battery (4200maH) and responsive ...great signal and reception, call quality-drawback-no software updates none if not on docomo..though someone said you could trick it into thinking as on docomo by putting in a docomo apn (atlhough the software update itself is over wifi)..rooting etc? too early as too new a product...however in the end, screen is ultimate factor and therefore it fallls short

I didn't like the past Sony screens, because you had to use the device directly in front of your eyes. But the Xperia Ultra changed all that. If you say that the Sharp one has a bad screen, I believe you. And more if you were willing to sold it back at a loss.
And about the Teclast model, it seems that they only use the 2100 MHz band, so it is only 2G if I want to use it in my country I will try to find out. It is really strange that they don't have the 850 MHz band.
If you happen to know other model, please let me know. If there is none, then Tronsmart will be my next purchase.
Thank you for your help.
Hello,
I bought the 'created N7' that is like the ulefone u7/tronsmart ps7/luftco a onex/orientphone mega pro 7 etc..., and is sold by the factory with 4.4.2 installed
I found a bug in this product
The bug is about the bad working of the s-view window.
I link here a video where is possible to see how it should work:
http://youtu.be/lk1P9jziw64
The problem is that with the created N7 it is not possible to answer
to the calls without opening the flip cover:
when the N7 receive a call, the s-view window is not sensitive, so it
is not possible to answer
The sview with cover closed is sensitive only for a few seconds after the cover has ben closed, specifically only before the sview goes in standby (black screen)...after the standby, wakening the phone by a call or simply pressing the power button (without opening the cover) the sview seems not sensitive
These are two videos that shows the problem:

This should be fixed, because is an important feature that is missing:
the phones like N7 of other brands (like ulefone u7/u69, luftco a-one
x, tronsmart ps7, orientphone mega pro 7) instead have a fully
functional s-view window
I already informed some created online sellers (kent wang, peter
yang... ) about this bug,
they told me that they will contact the engineer... but i have
not answer yet...i think they are not able to solve this problemi...
A seller told me that they send the leather case for free,
Its a gift , so i cannot ask them to fix this problem
Can someone help me to fix this problem?
I tried installing firmware of other device (luftco a onex 4.4.2)
But nothing has changed ...(and by the way i found that the luftco firmware
does not fit with my n7...the camera does not work with it)
Any hint?
Any suggestion?
I did some tests i found that actually the sview is sensitive also after the standby, but not enought to feel the touches through the screen...
in the settings there is an option 'increase touch sensitivity to allow the control through sview screen',
seems that this high sensitivity status is not reactivated if the cover is not opened after the phone goes to standby...
How can i fix this problem? perhaps some fix on touch drivers is needed?
Please help me!
Thank you!
i have used the s-view cover briefly but did not have issues (like i could take the call through the window)..just me but I reverted back to 4.2.2 because of the incall volume and higher ringer volumes (not found a way to fix that in 4.4.2..recall even Ultra Z had that issue with initial 4.4.2 versions before they fixed it and then Ebay app crashes no matter what I try (when trying to click on any item)...low in call volume was a big negative for me...added plus have cwm touch in 4.2.2 versus regular cwm but that is not a big deal (sure someone has a working twrp too which would be great)
btw successfully deodexed the 4.4.2 (even though not using it) using the tool here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2713329
however keep getting bootloop on deodexed 4.2.2
EDIT
also successfully applied Xposed mods (various like getting many more toggles, volume rocker wake etc..Gravity xposed is best, Xutilities, Xuimod and Xblast are others) on both the 4.2.2. and 4.4.2
also can get advanced reboot, screenshot using home hard button, slide status bar for screen brightness adjustment etc

I received an email from Teclast. They only support the 2100 MHz band on their phone.
Now the decision will be if I want to have 2G speeds (I'm almost always on reach of many public WiFi signals) and a $150 phablet with metal body, or a 3G and 0.5 cm shorter, $250 one with better camera and a plastic body.
If you happen to know another option, I'll be very greatful. The Sharp one is out of my league right now.
Thank you again.
Ok back to kitkat now using this version of the rom for (as needrom links says) Ulefone U69/U7, Carpad T69, Tronsmart PS7, Yuandao M87, OrientPhone Mega Pro 7.0, Created N7 (but using for OrientPhone)
https://mega.co.nz/#!w8tSEB7A!y15nkEH-q5f-4b8yXeOZWxQRuwMunlWfZ9nwsksLW0A
from
http://www.needrom.com/mobile/ulefo...ndao-m87-orientphone-mega-pro-7-0-created-n7/
The supposedly newer 5/27 rom (on Ulefone site link
http://www.ule-fone.com/downloads/ulefone-7-0-inch/)
and then the 6/05 rom from link
http://www.pandawillforum.com/showt...-4-2-for-Ulephone-U7-Orientphone-Mega-Pro-7-0
have issues (5/27 could not root no matter what-has while and orange Welcome boot animation just so you know) and the 6/05 Lutfco Onex rom (again same device) from link below has no MTK engineering mode (which I used to successfully tweak in call/ringer/notification volume levels) (the 6/05 rom has the Onex Black white boot animation)
you can use Mobile uncle tools (from playstore) or MTK Engineering Mode app per this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2248396
pr just type this in dialer
*#*#3646633#*#* to get into MTK engineering mode (no app needed)
Need to Headset and Headset Loudspeaker and Mic within each of those (for each level like level0 level1 etc..think these are the volume steps as called out in build prop)
example levels shown here (different phone but same applies)
http://flaresroms.blogspot.com/2014/05/rom422un-official-mere-by-john-reniel.html
non touch recovery cwm as got using MKTdroid tools not fancy but does the job and is fast..the CWm touch recovery takes forever
4.4.2 with working camera+root (SuperSU)+access to MKT Enng tools
vicolodo..think the camera work in JB rom not in 4.4 (in the created kk, the camera only does the front camera not the rear) wondering if it is a gallery apk, camera.bin, and camera lib files issue -will let you know if I have any success (not sure if the 6/5 luftco kk rom has fixed this issue..but then no engineering mtk mode on that and need it to boost pathetically low ringer and in-call earpiece default volumes)
EDIT
(as everything on xda. this is what worked for me do your own checks and due diligence..nothing guaranteed)
so took this rom from here
http://www.ule-fone.com/downloads/ulefone-7-0-inch/
file folder name is 20140527_e2719v92_gq3015
but could not root it (even using vroot)
so from an earlier 4.4.2 rom (link below)
http://www.needrom.com/mobile/ulefo...ndao-m87-orientphone-mega-pro-7-0-created-n7/
which was rootable via vroot (but camera rear did not work), had created cwm recovery image file using mktdroid tools
folder name for this rom is
20140526_e2719v92_gq3015_N7
mktdroid tools guide for cwm is here
http://www.chinaphonearena.com/foru...-CWM-MTK6595-MTK6582-MTK6589-MTK6589T-MTK6577
so installed the rom in first link (5/27)
then went back to flashing mode (no battery etc)
and in the folder of the rom (first link) renamed recovery.img as something else
and put instead the recovery cwm image file created for the needrom rom as the recovery image file.
when flashing unchecked everything except recovery..so the scatter took the new recovery file
then booted to cwm and flashed cwm su update zip file (can find many places)
booted after flashing..no issues SU was there and so was root
camera works on this 5/27 rom AND you have access to mtk engineering tools/mode
only thing google play etc would not connect to network so just went to each google app (like play services, partner setup etc and cleared all data and cache)
on rebooting everything worked! (root, google play etc, mtk enng mode, cwm, camera)
old cwm attached..this will prompt you to update su later

Cubot S308 Review
As I take a look at the current Chinese mobile market I see a large number of phone makers. Some have already made a name for themselves and some are new. One name that I keep seeing is Cubot. From what I’ve seen they offer decent specs and even better pricing so I decided to give one a try.
Unboxing
I ordered the Cubot S308 from Pandawill using EMS shipping. The ordered processed very quickly and was shipped in a very timely manner. Due to the quick handling on their end, the parcel actually arrived the same day as something I had ordered days earlier in China and had shipped via EMS. When the phone arrived it was well packaged to ensure it wasn’t damaged during transit.
Inside the box was the S308 phone with a screen protector already installed, a spare screen protector, a flip case, the manual, a micro USB cable, a wall adapter, as well as the adapter needed for North America. All bases covered and at a very low price point. All the accessories can really add up, so having them come with the device is a nice touch.
You can check out the unboxing video below.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_d766qemUI
Specs
5″ 720p display
Mediatek 1.3 Ghz MT6582 quad core SoC
Dual SIM
2 GB RAM
16 GB storage
8MP rear and 5 MP front camera
1800 mAh battery (2000 mAh)
Android 4.2.2
Check out the full video review below.

Physical Features
The Cubot S308 measures 142 x 73 x 8.2 mm and weights 154 grams. Despite the sharp angular design the phone is fairly comfortable to hold.
The top of the phone has the microUSB port as well as the 3.5 mm headphone jack.
The right hand side of the device has the power button directly below the volume rocker.
On the top left of the device you have the 5 MP front facing camera.
On the bottom right is the speaker, and at the top in the center is the 8 MP main camera.
Display
The S308 features a 5 inch 1280 x 720 IPS LCD with 294 ppi. In screens smaller than 5.5 inches I really like the use of 720p. In most cases it still looks really nice and saves battery life.
I was really impressed with the 720p display on the Cubot S308. It is bright, vibrant and responsive. Viewing angles were also very good. Good start for a budget device.
Software
While the Android 4.2.2 based ROM for the S308 isn’t anything out of the norm, it is fairly stable. Out of time I spent with the handset it only randomly rebooted itself once. Other than that I didn’t experience any lagging or serious glitches. Boot time was a quick 22 seconds, and for those of you that like the plain easy to navigate ROM’s that are found in many Chinese devices, that is exactly what you’ll find here. For those that like to customize, you can always visit the Google Play Store to help you with that. Speaking of which, the Play Store comes pre-installed which is always a good thing.
Wi-Fi
The Cubot S308 uses 2.4 Ghz Wi-Fi. I took a speedtest right by the router on my basement level. Then a second on my main level about 24 feet away, and a third at the furthest point of my main level about 48 feet away.
Router= 74.37 mbps
Main floor/mid point=20 mbps
Main floor/ furthest point=7.46 mbps
This handset did a good job with it’s Wi-Fi as I was able to use it anywhere within my house.
Call quality
While not outstanding the S308′s call quality isn’t bad either. Simply put, it gets the job done.
Speakers
The speaker is located on the bottom right side of the back of the Cubot. I wasn’t expecting much other than something acceptable for general media. What I found surprised me. While the speaker isn’t anything more than average in regards to how loud it is, but it does give some descent performance. I listened to a few ringtones and was surprised at how the speaker picked up on the base tones. I decided to put it up against my Huawei Mediapad X1 and found that the Cubot S308 actually picked up and separated the bass tones better than the X1 in regards to ringtones and many types of music. Don’t get me wrong, overall the X1 has clearer, cripser sound but it also costs more than twice as much.
My only gripe is that the speaker does seem to distort quite easily in media with lots of mids and treble such as hard rock/heavy metal, which is unfortunate.
Overall, pretty good job on the speaker Cubot. Especially on a budget device.
Video Playback
I’ve already established that the Mediatek MT6582 quad core is more than capable in regards to playing all types of media, even in basic phones with 1GB of RAM. The Cubot S308 has 2 GB of RAM and did a great job with online video clips, YouTube, and various movie formats. Everything played smoothly with no stuttering what so ever. I used the stock video player as well as VLC and got good results with both.
Web Browsing
The Mediatek MT6582 quad core is the little brother to the MT6592 octa core. I’ve commented many times before that the octa core does a great job web browsing, but the MT6582 is no slouch either. Along with the 2 GB of RAM and less strenuous 720p display to S308 loads and moves between pages fairly quickly. I would say that even for those that do a lot of browsing the Cubot S308 is up to the task.
Cameras
The Cubot S308 has a 5 MP front facing camera that handles videos calling and selfie duties. The 8 MP rear camera does an a fairly good job. This surprised me a little because to be honest I wasn’t expecting much out of the camera. The area it struggled in the most was with lower lighting situations. That’s not to say the shots were terrible but it simply can’t compare with the higher end phones, that have higher end cameras. In well lit environments the camera works like a charm. The focus is pretty quick and it works well. Overall the photography that comes out of this phone surpasses much of the competition at this price.
GPS
The Mediatek GPS has been proven to work well in several devices but the real deciding factor and praise or blame in regards to performance lies with the phone maker. If they try to save a few dollars or don’t think components through it can cause issues. So the story remains the same with the question always being asked “Does the GPS work?”
In airplane mode the device took several minutes to get it’s first cold lock.
I tested the S308 with Google Maps with data and Navfree without data. In both cases the GPS was usable but very slow to adapt to any changes in regards to route.
If you need basic GPS then the phone is fine, but if you want a super responsive machine that can adjust instantly then the GPS is just not up to the task.
Benchmarks
The Cubot S308 is a budget device running a Mediatek MT6582 quad core. The phone isn’t going to rank with the elite flagships because it isn’t intended to. What it can do is give good performance to the average user.
Antutu
16,741
This puts the device in the ballpark of the Nexus 4 and Samsung S3.
Nenamark 2
54.9 fps
CPU Prime
2925
Vellamo
Metal
767
Multicore
1284
Chrome Browser
2182
As you can the scores mark the phone that runs at the level of technology from a couple of years ago. That being said phones like the Nexus 4 and Samsung S3 are still capable phones, and so is the S308.
Battery
With a 2000 mAh battery powering a 5 inch 720p display and Mediatek MT6582 quad core you’d figure the phone would do alright with battery life, but it doesn’t. I tested the phone by putting it in a video loop using VLC and setting the brightness to auto. The phone lasted just 2 hours. The phone does alright on standby and drains at a reasonable rate, but when the screen is on the battery disappears quickly. Perhaps it is a software issue and an update would fix the problem, many descent phones have needed a tweak to get the battery life running at it’s full potential. As it stands now light users or those that just use the phone for emergencies should have little problem, but if you use your device a lot you will likely find a top up charge or two in order.
Gaming
For basic games the MT6582 that is found in this phone is just fine. If you are a very picky, serious gamer it will probably disappoint. The phone will play pretty much anything on the market but the quality is reduced to low levels with more demanding games. They are playable, just not as smooth as high end devices. Of course, this phone costs a fraction of the price, so I feel it does a good enough job to get a thumbs up.
Final Thoughts
Pro’s
Very well rounded in it’s performance
Good display
Better than expected loud speaker
Stable ROM
Descent cameras
Great price
Con’s
Screen battery life
GPS could be better
Overall the Cubot S308 is one of the better devices I have tested at this price. I was curious yet a bit skeptical about Cubot as a brand but I can say that I was impressed with the phone other than the weak battery which is the phones biggest drawback. I would love for Cubot’s next device to be a higher end phone, perhaps with a MT6595. If they were to include much better battery life, adjust the GPS, but keep the overall good feel of the device all while keeping it at a low price, they could be one of those few companies really shaking up the Chinese phone scene.
How about the storage? I just got mine and it has 1 GB of 'internal storage' and 13GB of 'phone storage'. No matter if I choose 'phone storage' as the place were applications should be installed, everything ends up installed into the 'internal storage' which very quickly runs out of space. How do you make it so that applications are installed in the phone storage instead?

Hi
for the memory splitting issue there is a new rom version (4.2.2 android) posted on the site "need rom"
it was issued for this reason
Another topic: how the battery is working with you? for me the android OS was not so properly optimized for this device.
Now I do not know if the new roms version has also solved the battery issue.
if someone had also updated the device to this version, please can give me a feedback?
thanks in advance
for those that they are interesting to buy with coupon GBS308HF from Gearbest at 135.99$

My Cubot shipped with 4.4, and I'm still limited to 1gb RAM. I just did a ROM update, so I'll check to see if there is a difference. The GPS is not good for me.

Is it confirmed that it can be flashed in Cubot S308 shipped with 4.4 ?
If yes, can you provide the link of this ROM to avoid any mistake?

More internal storage space!
Could you please indicate step by step how I can make my internal storage on this phone more than 1GB, I just bought it today and I am already running out of space for new applications?

Root phone. Install recovery with "MTK-TWRP 2.8.1.0" or MtkDroidTools v2.5.3. Search "HKPHONEROMEDITTOR.apk" install and run. Choose "MTK6582 Devices (only HKPhone Racer)" option, with slider choose the the amount of internal memory you want, then apply button and finnaly reboot recovery for change. All done. Mine uses 10GB.
My S308 has been updated to V6_CQ_4137C_V0.0.9_20141124 .
It is also rooted with Vroot.
Using it for some days now i face the following issues.
3G signal is poor compared with other devices (ex Xperia M) on the same place same time (both phones side by side) same carrier, same SIM type. S308 3G signal strength is 2 lines down. On the contrary 2G signal is very good.
GPS locks very quick but its accuracy is low. Very often it looses my position and Google maps reroutes all the time.
Native email app crashes (Internal error) asking to report failure. It does not refresh every x minutes as set it , but it downloads emails when refresh manually. I have set up a yahoo account (imap) and a gmail account.
Could it be ROM's problem?
Any advice?
upgrade
i have the cubot s308 Android 4.2 MTK6582 so looking to use V6_CQ_4137C_V0.0.9_20141124 from there site, i believe its kitkat 4.4.2 am i able to flash this upgrade from 4.2.2 as there's conflicting theories on can and can't, don't want to be bricking it, also if it is possible when using flash tools is it download i need to be using or firmware upgrade, cheers for any help.
Unfortunately you can't upgrade to 4.4.2 due to a strange incompatibility of these two versions of the same phone. For the same reason i cannot downgrade to 4.2, since i've read that it has a better 3G reception.

Is there anyone face same problem and have a solution ??.
Regars.

fix internal storage
You will need this http://helpadude.com/cubot-s308-4-4-2-stock-rom-6-gb-internal/ to upgrade for more internal memory. Phone is great.
Cubot S308 problems
My son has a Cubot S308 with kitkat, and all is well except for two things:
- Sound is too loud on speakers, even with the volume at minimum. It does not happen with the headphones;
- Sometimes, while loading a game, screen goes black and the phone stops completely. It reboots after a minute or two.
Is there anyone having this issues? How can I fix them? Especially the sound problem. It's very annoying.
Thank you.

Items delivered:
The Doogee Turbo-mini F1 is delivered in a valuable looking box, which is kept in a white and partly blue color. On the side you can find a genuine certificate, similiar like the ones you can find on Xiaomi products. Beside the smartphone itself the following accessoires are delivered with it: An USB-data/-charging cable, an USB charger, a white headset with control button, a quick start guide and a second screen protection foil (one is already applied). The first three enumerated items are placed very neatly in a foam-like material, which gives the whole box a kind of valuable impression: Thumbs up here! Attached you can see an overview of all items delivered.
Unboxing Video:
First Impressions:
What you will probably notice first when you take the Doogee Turbo-mini F1 in your hands, is that it weights way less than any smartphone you hold in a long time. At first sight (and also at second) this is a very nice combination with its quite compact size. Although its very little weight it still has a valuable feeling due to the metal edging.
Like usual, on the front bottom you can find the three capacitive Android buttons. These are printed in silver color and do not have a background light. At the top you can find the loudspeaker, the front camera and the light/proximity sensor. The transition between display and case can be seen slightly whilst turned off screen, but not very remarkable.
At both long sides metal bars are placed. They feel cool when being touched and give the smartphone a valuable appeal, way more as you would probably expect from a price around 125$. The volume rocker (also made out of metal) is placed on the left side. It is not perfectly enclosed, so it has a little free space to move. You can hear a very faint metal “clicking” when you move the phone as the volume rocker moves as well. The pressure point is, anyhow, very nice.
On the right side the power button is placed. Also this one is made out of metal and has a nice pressure point. As a kind of design elements, both metal stripes have visible screws at the ends.
MicroUSB and 3.5 mm headphone jack are placed on the top side of the Doogee. While I personally would prefer the MicroUSB on the bottom, this is not a very big drawback.
The bottom side of the F1 does not have any connectors. Top and bottom side does not have metal elements. Plastic elements in a chrome look were used here.
The backside of the Turbo-mini F1 is kept simple. On the lower part you can find the mono-loudspeaker, while the camera is placed on the top left. A little highlight is the metal bordering of the camera, which can be felt nicely.
The back cover is sitting pretty tight. Pretty damn tight . Beneath it you find the battery as well as the SIM slots (1xMicro, 1x Mini (“Normal”)) and the MicroSD slot. There is no dedicated 4G slot. Via the Android menu it can be chosen which card should be using LTE, the other one is running on 2G.
All in all the Turbo-mini F1 makes a good impression, nothing is creaking and has an overall serious look. Single downside is the volume rocker which is not perfectly enclosed.
UI/Android:
The F1 is delivered with Android 4.4.4. It comes preinstalled with a launcher from Doogee. Anyhow, the launcher is quite close to the stock laucher, only the icons are modified with a colorful background. The launcher is very snappy, the animations are fluent. The phone is delivered with the FW revision from 31.01.2015. The Turbo-mini F1 also supports “Wireless Update” (FOTA). Below some impressions of the launcher.
Performance:
Like already mentioned in the Android section the system runs very smooth – the strenghs of the MT6732 can be noticed easily. An update to Lollipop would be great since then the whole advantage of the 64 bit architecture SoC could be exploited. But already with the preinstalled KitKat the smartphone reaches above average benchmark results in this price section. The results of the Antutu v.5.6.1, Geekbench 3 and 3DMark (Icestorm Extreme) benchmark can be seen in the next pictures:
Only the small RAM of about 1 GB is limiting the performance of the F1 for using it with massive parallel programs. Personally I did not hit that border yet, while using several opened Chrome tabs (>7) and messenger apps in the background the system still ran smoothly.
Storage:
The budget 4G phone from Doogee comes with an officially 8 GB ROM. This is divided into internal and phone storage. The exact partition can be seen in the next screenshots:
-Internal Storage: 1.12 GB (0.95 GB available)
-Phone Storage: 4.59 GB (4.58 available)
-Total: 5.71 GB (5.53 GB available)
The internal storage (which can be used for apps) is unfortunately quite small with around 1 GB.
The memory can be extendend via MicroSD-slot and and external USB storage via USB OTG (tested).
Camera:

Sensors:
According to shop information the Turbo-mini F1 comes with acceleration, proximity and light sensor. The app “Sensor Box” shows several more, but the shop remains correct: The “additional” sensors don’t return any values and are fake. In general the sensors work as expected. Similiar as in the DG280 the proximity sensor has a quite low resolution with just 2 values: Covered and not covered. Still totally enough turning off the screen while talking.
GPS:
The GPS in the mini-F1 is usable. The first fix out of the box was done after a few seconds outside, while the accuracy improved up to 3 m in the next few seconds. At the start of one from several test navigations the GPS showed a similiar behaviour as the camera did – the device could not get a fix (although it worked short before without any problems). Once cleaned the system quickly with Clean Master and the GPS works flawlessly again: GPS fix immediately. When the GPS is once locked the signal is stable – navigation worked without any problems. No “improvements” like updated EPO files or similiar were used. The Turbo-mini F1 uses GPS (no GLONASS or BeiDou). Below you can find a screenshot from GPS Test and the used satellites.
Battery:
Officially the phone comes with a 2000 mAh battery. The measurement of the battery revealed a real capacity of roughly 1700 mAh. The MT6732 is an energy efficient SoC and in combination with the small display the battery can live with average use (subjective!) about one day. In areas with often changing signal strengths (or types) you will notice the increased battery drain due to the constantly tried switch between 2G/3G/4G. In this situation the battery life is getting hardly over one day. This downside can be partly reduced by manually setting one network type while not using. Below you can see the charging history of the battery.
Battery charging history of the Turbo-mini F1
Supported Bands:
The Turbo-mini F1 is fully functional for LTE in Europe due to the coverage of all relevant european bands. An overview is given in the next screenshots. As already mentioned, the 4G service can be switched between the SIM cards.
WiFi Receiption:
The WiFi receiption is above average good. A direct comparision with the Doogee DG280 and Cubot Zorro 001 you can see in the next picture (all tested at the same location, 2 walls in direct sight line).
From left to right: WiFi receiption Turbo-mini F1, DG280 and Cubot Zorro
Display:
The display diagonal measures 4.5″, while the resolution is 960×540 (qHD). Officially it is an IPS display as one-glass-solution (OGS). Both specifications seems to be correct at near observation. In other ratings of the Doogee Turbo-mini F1 it can be read that the low resolution is a major drawback of the phone: The display is not HD and of course it can be seen. Anyhow, the qHD resolution is in my eyes (wordplay, hehe ) still suficient for the compact display and no pixels are jumping right into your eyes. Comparision: The Turbo-mini F1 has a pixel density of roughly 245 PPI, while a 5″ display with HD resolution has a pixel density of about 294 PPI. The difference is not that huge.
Virus-Scans:
The initial virus scan with G-Data shows an infected system:
The Anti-Virus app reports that the system is infected with the “SMSReg” malware. According to internet reports this program can cause (unasked) sending of messages to a chinise number and rise costs. This app can be removed with root (for example via “System App Remover”), the app to be removed is called “Device Management”. Afterwards the system is virus free (…except of the SuperUser App which is recognized as malware):
Speedtest:
…will be added soon .
More Infos:
-Weight: 114 g
-3 Point touchscreen
Misc:
The Turbo-mini F1 has no notification LED. The smart wake function (double tap to wake up, also gestures) is supported and works without problems. Google Apps are preinstalled. The F1 can be easily rooted via One-Click-Tools (iRoot successfully tried). It also supports the budget alternative to NFC called HotKnot (had two HotKnot devices at hands for the first time – it even works !).
Review Video:
Conclusion:
The Doogee Turbo-mini F1 makes a pretty good impression overall. The smartphones combines several decent functions at a low price and weight: Full european LTE coverage, good processor performance, good GPS and nice manufacturing quality. Of course the F1 also has some (mostly budget class typical) downsides like the camera or the storage division. A small FW update which corrects some small software issues wouldn’t hurt either. Anyhow, all in all it is a smartphone with a very nice price/performance ratio which we can especially recommend to friends of sub 5″ displays. (Since I am one myself I think this device will accompany me on ).
Nice review. My compliments. Quite insightful.
I was impressed with the F1 and positive specs for a phone of that price, so I took a risk and ordered 3. One for the missus, one for the mother and one for the brother. All three have been using them for a while now and are quite positive. The phone is fast, cheap and feels snappy
But, and that is where it becomes tricky, all three have issues. One phone doesn't seem to last very long with battery at all and also seems having trouble charging. The others have persistent problems with the camera, constantly having the 'can't connect to camera' bug. Nothing so far has helped solve that, no cache wipe, no other apps, but it usually starts working only after a few reboots. This behaviour disappears after a factory reset, but comes back again after a day or two of use.
Another issue is that after reboot, the shortcuts placed on the desktop are gone. Apps put from the app list into the main screen are gone after a reboot.
I've contacted Doogee about these, but the support is lackluster, as to expected for a china phone, but they did hint to a firmware update. Interestingly enough, they didn't allow my remarks to remain public.
I think the Doogee would benefit immensely from an update to Lollipop and I actually would prefer a full stock Android on the phone. All in all, it is a budget phone, and you could do much worse for a 100 euro's a piece.
Thanks for the positive feedback, always nice to hear . About the camera bug: I have the app Clean Master (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cleanmaster.mguard ) installed and the problem disappears (even if it's just temporary) after I "cleaned" the RAM of the device. Does this help for you too?
But yes, all in all I also think it is a quite nice device for around 100€ (especially since most china devices under 5" have rather bad specs).
By the way, how do you mean that part with "didn't allow my remarks to remain public"? Did you post it on the Doogee site or how?

Thanks, I will try that app. I'll let you know.
And yes, the Doogee site has a public feedback part, and although I did get an answer, it wasn't public anymore.
Just added a small Review Video .
@CrimsonRid: That's kind of bad public behaviour of Doogee. Although it already happened some weeks ago that Doogee tried to push a review author (for the same device) to remove his negative remarks from the review since it is not good for them. It's in german language, but the screenshots are in english:

Hi,
i am having some gps issues with this phone. The lock is very fast but it is unusable for navigation because the accuracy is very bad. I don't know if it is dropping the gps connection al the time! When i stop somewhere the gps position is jumping/turning around on the screen and sometimes even does not register that i stopped but keeps going forward. I am also experiencing the problem that it can't connect to the camera. Mostly it works again after a reboot.

To the GPS: That is bad to hear, there seems to be some variance in the GPS quality then in the devices. I could use mine for navigation without problems (tried some test navigations in the car).
To the camera: Did you try what I wrote in this post? I also experienced that problem, but then I did not need to reboot the phone at least again.
Thank you very much for the great review.

I fear it's not a bug, but just because the internal storage is quite small. You can root the device via iRoot. Then you can try to use apps like App2SD and see, if you can free some space from the internal storage.
i have bought two doogee's f1, i quote your good review.
If someone wants to see , this is video of unboxing and comparison Blue - White:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frGQ0lDajlw
also with root access, moving apps from internal 1,2Gb rom and Sd is not possible
Unfortunetaly there is no way yet to repartition the memory in devices with the new 64 Bit Mediatek SoCs as far as I know . But hopefully this will change in the future.
bad day
first laptop mouse and keyboard died. Now f1 mini is dead , will not charge or turn on :crying:

That sucks . Did you try to charge for a longer time? Does it not even boot into recovery menu?

It's dead as a dodo, ordered knew battery but I fear it's something more sinister. Went flat and then never charged again, left on charge for 12 hours. Bought from China so not going to bother sending it back, it's a poor quality phone that can't handle more than a few apps before storage full messages.
Would I buy another china phone? yep but not one from doogee.
Will update either way when new battery arrives. It's my sons phone so can't be sure of what happened
I got the oneplus one and it's an excellent phone.

Did you try to get into the recovery mode? If you connect it via USB to your computer, does it recognize it? Also try without battery.
Not recognised with or without battery, just tried, thanks.

That's bad . Does something happen if you keep holding VOL- and Power? This should bring up the (chinese) recovery menu... At least hopefully.
Nothing happens, think it's fried, still waiting on battery from China.
