I just updated from 4.4 to 4.4.2.
The "OK Google" hotword detection was working fine (in both the GEL and the Google Search app if I accessed it via the app icon) before I updated, but now the ability seems to be lost no matter what I do.
I've double-checked the following -
My system default language is English (United States).
In my Voice Search settings:
a) my language is also English (United States).
b) Hotword detection option is checked.
c) In my Offline speech recognition > Download Languages settings, I've English (United States) pre-installed (no different from in 4.4).
In short, I simply haven't changed any settings that might have caused this problem.
Anyone having this same issue, or know how to fix it?
UPDATE:
I figured out what happened - it was Pushbullet that caused my problem, not 4.4.2.
Apparently their "Notification Mirroring" feature (which is quite awesome) under Accessibility settings somehow gimped Google Search's hotword detection. Here's a link to someone else's thread where this problem had already been discovered last month(!).
I only found out after Pushbullet themselves acknowledged the issue in their app update description on Google Play.
Anyway thanks for all the suggestions and comments.
I'm still on 4.1. Not sure what the deal might be. You'll probably see a 4.3 update now to fix this issue.

i had that after updating to 4.2.2. I had English (US) at first but I tried switching to English Canada and the "Say OK Google" was gone. Went back to English (US) and it's back and working again.

Hmm. Which setting did you change exactly?
The general language option for the whole device in Settings > Language & input, or in Voice under the Google Search settings?
Google Now>settings>Voice>Language

Didn't work for me.
Tried it with English (UK), the mic button was greyed out / just showed an outline. Hit the back button till I was on my homescreen and swiped away Google Search in the Recent Apps list. Switched back to English (US), and it was still the same.
Same here
I got the same,
it doesnt even work if you're on the google now screen
I am having the same issue after the 4.4.2 update....hope they fix this soon i was really getting used to this feature!
That's strange. I updated and it's working fine for me
Thx very usefull..
Working fine for me on CM-11 (4.4.2)
I flashed the full 4.4.2 factory image from google. Still shows "Ok google" on my search bar and worked just fine.
It goes away after like 10-15 tries... but that time google knows that you have learned the process.
or are you saying when you say "okay google" it doesn't detect at all ?
Uninstall Updates to Google Search and then reinstall them.
Found the culprit. Problem now solved.
Guys, I know what happened - it was Pushbullet that caused my problem.

I'll update the OP.
I had the same issue going from 4.4 to 4.4.2. The fix for me was the main language setting. All my inputs were set under English (U.S.), i.e., keyboard, voice but my main language setting was English (U.K.). Don't how how it happened but I switched it back and I was good

This didn't work either and that seems to have reset my entire launcher/home screen.... Awesome

You were spot on with that buddy! The same thing happened after I allowed notification mirroring with AirDroid. Disabled that in the accessibility settings and Google hot words works again. Thanks a lot

Hi guys,
(UK moto G, unrooted & latest KitKat)
I cannot get my text to speech work, Ive gone into settings & finally text-to-speech output, installed some voice data.
In all honesty I don`t even know what type of text its supposed to read. I`m guessing sms would classify... but there isnt a button to read out the text or anything. Can someone shed some light on this TTS for me please?
Also .. when I press "voice search" under speech in lang & input, nothing happens.... How do I fix this? Edit: voice to speech just worked.. and i didnt event change anything
When i plug my moto in my laptop and attempt to download from G play it just tells me the app will download soon and never does. What is the problem?... I used to have a similar problem with my galaxy S1 on a different laptop,
Hi all,
I use a Galaxy S3 T999 and across several different 4.3 ROM's, I've found that since about a month ago, every time I hit the microphone key on the keyboard to voice type, the GPS icon will display for about 4 seconds. I don't know why this is necessary, any input?
So, if this bothers you (privacy, battery life?) here's the solution I found:
First, trying to control location permissions for this will block all location access otherwise. You must disable location permissions for Google framework which will also stop location from working in maps, etc.
The solution I found is to uninstall the update to the "Google Search" app, and check the box to stop it from auto-updating. I see zero performance impact or functionality loss, and no loss of accuracy in voice typing, for my purposes (I don't use the Google Search app or Google Now). The voice typing process uses about 10% less cpu while it is listening to your voice too.
The Google Search app, as far as I know, provides the functions of Google Now. Using an old version means you'll be missing some cards and perhaps some other functions. Since I personally don't use Google Now, this solution works for me and hopefully for someone else.
Questions:
Does your gps icon blink for a bit every time you hit the microphone key (on the keyboard) to voice type? I found not every device is doing this.
Why?
It worked - Thank you!
Thanks a ton! Your fix worked, this location stuff was bothering me. Looks like not many are bothered by the GPS locating happening everytime the Google Voice Typing is opened or is it just a few phones plagued. I am on a Galaxy S3 (i9300) running CM10.2.
This seems to be a T999 issue
Hi everyone,
I have some problems while using my bluetooth headset.
What I'm trying to accomplish here is to push the headset's button, start google now and launch a command (mostly calling a contact).
On stock rom, if I try that, I got a black screen with the word "Initialization" and it gets stuck on it.
(in google now settings the option about bluetooth headsets is on).
I tried with a couple of apps like "bluetooth launch" and "voice command", and almost all the time google now is launched but it ask for "press the microphone and start talking" (I'm translating from Italian...), so I always have to interact physically with the phone.
For what I've seen, maybe the only way to fix this is using tasker with autovoice (as seen in some xda video tutorials), but I still have to try.
Does anyone has this problem?
Thank you!
It is old an Android OS issue on non-english language configured device. Even Android 6.0 is affected. It has been assigned but still no fix

I have some problems with Google voice search.
I cant get any audible answer from Google now, no matter what question i try (not every question generate audible answers).
I have tried to set media volume to max, and to press volume up when i should hear the answer. Language is set to English(US) and voice output is on.
Second problem is that i cant open any apps with voice search, or set a reminder. "Take a picture" or "Play some music" doesnt work either.
I have unrooted stock fw (4.4.4) and use the Google Now launcer (3.6.14.1337016).
This should work outside US right, as long as i have set the language to english? (i also tried this using TunnelBear vpn with no success).
Anyone know what i could try to make these things work?
edit: i've tried to fix this problem several times, it has newer worked for me. 2 minutes after posting this i solved both problems by changing system language to English (it was in my native language).
So i guess you need to use a system language that supports voice search to make it work..
