Is there root for AT&T 4.4?
No there is not but in the at&t thread there is already a way so you can be rooted and have custom recovery

Yes.

There is no way to root kitkat on any device without either unlocking the bootloader or reverting to a root able build of Android first.
Flashback
I've been looking into rooting the D80020 and I think you have to flash back to D80010 (for ATT) then you can root and (possibly) update to Kit Kat. I haven't done it yet but planning on it soon.
I just did that 2 days ago. Flashed back to 10d, rooted, flashed twrp with freegee and then flashed stock kk. All told, took me about half an hour. Now I'm rocking rooted kk, couldn't be happier with the phone.

I used the same thing for root. Cant use a custom recovery though, but since I just got the phone yesterday I'm cool with using stock for now.

use ioroot25 to root.
Then install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=edu.shell.freegee_free and install TWRP.
reboot into recovery and install the rom.
Before doing anything download the rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2672931 and copy it to your phone.
I'm trying to restore the ability to do OTA updates after I've rooted my device. I;ve tried unrooting but that doesn't solve the problem.
How does the OS check that you have rooted the device in the past? I don't have access to a stock rom (Yet) to check if a firmware flash might restore everything to normal.
Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist.
You need to be on stock ROM and stock recovery. Also preferably unrooted and without any system modifications like xposed and such. That's all you need to have to be able to get OTAs.

Thanks for the reply
I am on stock rom, I also think that i'm on a stock recovery, since I never flashed the recovery. I used Kingo root to root the device, dont know if that flashed a custom recovery. I'm also not aware of any modifications.

The question was actually answered in a previous thread, no?

Anyway, XDA Doesn't have a dedicated forum for that device, so either try and boot to recovery and see if it's stock or custom (custom probably is either CWM or TWRP or Philz), or try asking the same thing over at the Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting.
Thank you.

I may have a different variant 915g but the procedure may be the same. Try to flash CWM using Odin and then flash supersu. I also did cf-autoroot but had the same issue as well

Can someone point me to the thread where you can root while on 6.0.1? I've found a few where all you have to do is flash the twrp in Odin but when i do so my phone freezes at the boot screen. Why help or ideas? Thanks
Make sure ur flashing the correct version of twrp for the 6.0 firmware; check out the deodexed ROM thread install instructions in Dev section it explains how to get root on stock.

i think the safest way is to flash D6603_23.0.A.2.93 firmware with flashtool, root it with giefroot, install xzdualrecovery and after that flash the ROM you want with recovery.
I did it the way I explained before, strange
