Hello all,
Does anyone know how I can root the avant that is running version G386TUVU1AOD7?
I tried towel root and that didn't work at all. It says the phone isn't supported. Not sure if I can downgrade the kernel to root it (boot.img)
I would prefer to do it without tripping Knox if possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Which android version it is?
The root/recovery thread for the Avant is here. I have AOD7 installed on mine, and the process worked.

I recently purchased a galaxy S6 (SM-920i) running Android 5.1.1 in the hope of rooting it and flashing it with a custom rom. I'm a novice at this, and have not been able to find a decent tutorial on this subject. I'm not concerned with tripping the knox counter by the way. Any help in this matter will be much appreciated. Thanks.

I did the following on mine (920F):
Get a kernel with root (Unikernel) and flash it via ODIN (since I did not wanted to flash a rom right away and that also comes with auto root).
Get the TWRP ODIN flashable .tar from http://twrp.me
Profit.
I have Sprint G925PVPU3BOI1 5.1.1 and was wondering what is the best/easiest way to root this phone. Does pingpong method actually work on this model? If not will other methods trip the knox thing and if it does will that only mean I won't get OTA updates or are there other disadvantages of tripping knox?
Thanks for the help

You can not root anymore with ping pong root. That only works on early firmware. Only disadvantages of tripping knox is that you won't be able to use Samsung pay if that matters, and it voids your Samsung warranty, meaning if something goes wrong Samsung won't touch it; however, your carrier will.
Thank you for the prompt information. With that being said is the process to root the model phone I have + 5.1.1 is to download odin put phone in d/l mode, use odin to flash with twrp and then flash rom, and then I can feel the joy or am I leaving out a step? is is correct where can I find the correct version of Odin and twrp, I've seen reference to it on this e but get a little confused about which file is correct for my model.
Thank you again for taking the time to help me

You must first root before you can install TWRP. There is a rooted kernel that you can use through Odin. Here is my thread with TWRP and the kernel.

Here is Odin:

No problem
Cant find a root method for build number mmb29k.g920aucu4dph5
Any insight or direction would be most appreciated!!
Bumpppp. Anyone find a method to root?
Don't think there's currently a method to root for this variant if you're on marshmallow
No. You ****ed.
I tried a few outdated methods not for this version and it just bricks the phone or doesn't work. Is there a working root method for this version? Can I flash to a previous version, root and upgrade? I'm new to the forum but somewhat experienced with rooting/flashing. Thanks for any help you can give.

This should work for you since you're running MM (6.0.1) - https://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s7/how-to/root-files-t-mobile-s7-t3488067
If you upgrade to Nougat though, this won't work.
EDIT: Btw, don't try putting TWRP on unless you are able to unlock your bootloader. I'm pretty sure it will flag your KNOX bit too or you might run into a situation that I'm in with DRK errors/IMEI being gone (due to issue with EFS partition). Basically my phone can't be used as a phone anymore.
I'm looking to root my phone, but I have a few questions. I just want to make sure I'm using a method that will work for my phone as I seem to have an uncommon version. I'm on a small carrier, and I'm questioning how I can root without tripping KNOX. Every guide I've found seems to indicate there are questions about rooting my phone. My build version also never shows up on any of the guides as a supported build.
Relevant information:
Galaxy S6
Model: SM-G920R6
Android Version: 5.0.2
Baseband Version: G920R6WWU2AOF2
KNOX version: 2.4
Anyone able to point me to a root that will work, and not trigger KNOX? Any guides are welcome as well!
As far as I know there isnt a way to root without triggering knox , and if you want to root you could probly find a guide quite eaisly , if its that you want to still be able to use knox secured apps etc use magisk

I tried PingPong. It notified me that it could not complete (I assume because I have an unsupported version).

Will Android Pay still work with magisk? I'm not familiar with it. I was under the impression that I would be permanently unable to use mobile payment applications if Knox was triggered. Is that wrong?

Yes it will , enable magisk hide and it should work , android pay dosnt use knox , i think samsung pay does but android pay is not effected by knox
Install magisk and it will all be fine
Also for rooting , just flash twrp with odin then flash magisk for root etc
