Hey all,
so I recently upgraded from a N4 to the N5. After two charge cycles, the N5 seems to be performing far worse than my N4 (both stock unrooted). With my N4, I could usually get 14 hours with 3 hours SOT (all on wifi). With the N5, I can't get more than 12 hours with 2 hours SOT (all on wifi). Currently I'm at 10 hours with 1.5 hours SOT and I have 24% left.
I also took a look at what people reported in the Battery Life Results thread and I saw several people (stock unrooted) getting 16-20 hours with at least 4 hours SOT. This is nothing close to what I've been getting.
Do you guys think it's possible that I got a dud? I tried reflashing it with the stock image and the first cycle since has been about the same. Not sure if I should wait a couple more cycles to see if it will improve or try to get an RMA for it.
Thanks for the help guys!

Probably depends what your doing with your SOT and what they doing which is why your getting different results.

The SOT I'm using it for is just web browsing, fb, and texting. No games or anything that intensive. Also gnow and auto brightness are on.

ditch location stuff, GNow, and find a stable brightness. Disable stuff you don't need as well (may or may not help..i'm noob)

web browsing could actually be CPU/GPU intensive (depending on how many tabs you open, how fast you scroll {remember, GPU/CPU works harder if you try to scroll up/down very fast}, how fast you move from webpage to webpage})
definitely turn off auto brightness. also ,install the nexus5 version of the Better Battery Stats to see if any wakelocks prevent your phone from sleeping. From mine (and other people's experience), the nexus5 sips very little battery when idle (even with email sync on through 3G/LTE data)
If I do web browsing, Battery Monitor Widget says my battery drain is around 15-30% per hour (because CPU scales up in response to my frequent open-new-link/new-tab), so I'll get ~3-5 hours screen-on
If I do only video watching, BMW says my drain is closer to 10-15% per hour, so it'll last ~7 hours screen-on
with very good idle-battery-usage (0.5%-2% per hour), I can probably hit 3 hours screen on + 24 hours easily (25% * 3 hours + 1% * 24hours = 75% + 24% = 100%)

Remember this phone has kit Kat and your nexus 4 probably has 4.3. This version of android seems a bit more aggressive on the location services.

So it sounds like other people are getting similar battery life? I'm just confused because it seems to be doing worse than my N4. Did people notice significant better battery life after the first 3-4 charge cycles?
Thanks for the help everyone!
Before purchasing, I was a little concerned about the amount of battery time between charges on the S6. I picked up the phone yesterday and was able to get 4+ hours of Screen On Time (SOT) with my first full charge. I didn't think that was too bad. I think the fact that it is a new device, I tend to "play" with it more in the beginning. I'm hoping it will get better as it settles into my routine. I still am a little concerned though as I didn't even have an hour of talk time to go along with the SOT, didn't stream music, play any games or really use any other apps. It's been quite a while since I've had a smaller sized battery in a phone I've owned so I may be hoping for too much when it comes to battery life. I had the LG G2, Galaxy S5, LG G3 and Note 4 prior to purchasing the the S6. I love the phone and don't plan on switching. I just thought I would get others opinions on it.
Battery life is bad. This is what it predicts for me. I get 15 hours basically with only chat and web browsing. I sleep off the charger and the phone loses 10-12%
Gps and playing music during a drive just gave me 4 hours. I'm trying to break the battery in by bringing it to 5% and recharging, but this is laughable.

Here's what I've got for the day
So far I'm not happy with the battery life. I'm coming from a G3, where the phone would stay at 100% for several hours, and by the end of the day would be anywhere from 30-50%. I received my S6 yesterday, got everything set back up and use the same apps as my G3, but within a couple minutes the battery was already at 99%, then 20 minutes later was in the mid 90's.
This is the first full day on a charge, with very light use, and this is what I have so far:
Taken off the charger around 6AM at 100%, and now at 7PM it's at 13%.
13 hours on battery
1h 32m SOT
I installed Greenify and GSAM battery monitor, hopefully that will help.

I think we've been spoiled by the LG batteries and then I went to the Note 4 so that doesn't help my comparison either. Today was better for me then yesterday though. Yesterday I was ready to take it back and tell them to keep it. Right now I've been off the charger for 90 mins. I'm down to 91% with 24 mins of calls and 23 mins of SOT.
So far my battery life is soso. Took off charger at 5:40am Saturday morning Eastern time. Currently at 21% with fairly light usage. Texting, little bit of Web browsing, some reading on Kindle app. I expect with normal usage I'll probably get in the 15-16 hour range. Which is uninspiring. perhaps an update will increase efficiency.
Cell standby is the #1 drain for me, comparible to many of the complaints in the main S6 forum prior to the vzw variant being released.

I think that is pretty good. Over 5 hours SOT and still 16% battery life left. Anything over 5 hours is very....very...good.
Looks to me like if they fix that cell standby bug we'll have a monster of a phone. 5 hours screen on time and its only 10% of the battery drain.... I'm curious to know if this cell standby bug is just a mistake in how battery stats are being reported.

I've seen a big improvement in battery today. No change in use. I have over 2 hours of talk and over 3.5 hours of SOT. Still have 22% and it's been 18.5 hours since the charge. My concerns are starting to go away.
Ok so here's all my info for you guys... I am on Verizon, and turned off the VOLTE calling when I got the phone based on the stuff I'd read. I had high cell standby usage. I turned it back on and it went awY to normal.levels, even with WiFi on all day and crappy signal.
I am using Nova launcher, and no theme. I do use a black background, basically a picture of a clear night sky with tons of stars. The day in the picture was a day of heavy Waze use with screen on, heavy Web surfing and some youtube. As few texts and some bacon reader.
I don't see volte calling anywhere I settings. I see "advanced calling". Is that it?

The problem doesn't seem to be SOT, but standby time. When I use the phone for an extended period of time, such as when I'm in bed for an hour, I only loose a few percent. However it seems to drain nearly as fast when it's in my pocket. This is why some get 5 hours of SOT while people like me who dont use it much are lucky to get 2 hours. Standby time seems to max out around 12-14 hours.

My Verizon S6 (64GB black) also has Cell Standby as the number one drain on the battery. It's significant compared to my Note 4, where Cell Standby is much lower on the list, and which loses a lot less battery power when idle compared to the S6. Doing a full factory reset, wiping cache doesn't change this fact on my device. Good to see that others have this issue, though I wonder if Samsung/Verizon will really do anything to address it. I love some aspects of the Galaxy S6, but the battery life is an issue for me.

Yeah, this is exactly what I see. My S6 lost 11% of battery as it idled while I slept, with Cell Standby as the largest user of battery (by far) during that time. It has to be a bug, as my Note 4 (with Lollipop) doesn't have this issue.
So my first two cycles on Friday and Saturday were pretty normal and the phone idled incredibly. Then all of a sudden the last couple of cycles (and this one I'm on now apparently) are being killed by Google Play Services, even while idle. I hate that app (not really). I wish it was more clear what within it was eating up the battery.
My experience: Got a S6 Edge from Verizon Apr 10. I was having data issues where I couldn't load pages even though it said 4G. My Cell Standby was pretty high 30%-40%. I was attributing the poor reception to the Cell Standby. They finally gave me a new phone yesterday. The data issue was fixed but my Cell Standby is still high at 30% (I turned off Advanced Calling). I'm assuming this isn't a hardware issue unless I'm really unlucky.
Not sure what is making it drain so fast. Lately, I get about 2 hours sot. When I got this replacement for my lost s6 a few months ago, I got 4 hours sot. Not sure what app I got since then that may have changed things. Ive attached an image from gsam. Battery stats in settings also. Do things like twitter in gsam at 0.4% really matter? Seems like such a small % wouldn't matter.
XZ Premium owners, how are you finding the battery? My Z2 and now Z5 have never guaranteed me a full day, and now that my Z5 is a bit older I'm charging twice daily. So I'm torn between the Z5P and the OP5, for all it's flaws -- is battery life better than the Z5? I'm particularly interested in dual-SIM, but I assume the battery life won't be all that different to the single-SIM handset.
My last Sony phone as a daily driver was my Z3. Battery was fine on that until I did anything that made the CPU go into meltdown.
On the XZ Premium, Sony and Qualcomm have got things nicely under control - which means the phone doesn't run too hot (which in itself plays havoc with the battery, and can make it near impossible to charge) - and the battery doesn't seem to take much of a hit even when playing video or taking photos.
My phone can still get hot when taking photos and give me the warning, but despite me using the phone heavily, the battery (given its size) works commendably. Especially if you enable any of the stamina modes
I could live with most of these modes enabled all the time, with the only issue being when using an on-screen keyboard (it missing characters pressed), and then the battery lasts even longer.
tl;dr - the battery is good and I'm very impressed. You should get a whole day of usage without fear, and with a good deal of screen-on-time.
I got this phone yesterday. My previous phone was the Z3 Compact which was the king of the battery life back then, but now i think the XZ Premium is better than the Z3c while i use certain apps and it consumes more battery only when i use the Camera, Photos app, Video app and Youtube. I haven't used Stamina Mode yet.
Mine battery life is good, my best was 31 hour running always under 4g with 4+ hours of screen on
I do a day and a half with every single charge at the moment
Thanks everyone.
@Katsigaros, could you let me know how you're getting on after a week or so? I don't plan to buy until the start of this month, so I'd be interested in progress.
@Tonyevol that's impressive for standby, but is 4 hours SOT good? I had the same response from a few people on Reddit, with 5 hours of SOT, but I though 6+ was kind of the norm these day, with good phones getting 7 or 8.
I am getting 5-6 hours SOT as of now. Over a month, I have seen marked improvement week on week. Once we get root/ twrp, we can disable some processes and programs that aren't required thereby maximizing the battery juice.
Little better than Galaxy S7 Edge which is my previous before. I am quite happy with battery.

After the first time I used it i performed a full recharge from 1 to 100 % to calibrate the battery. I am watching a lot of videos and because of that the battery lasts me 1,5 - 2 days. If I am not watching videos I can get almost 3 days.
I will have a clearer view on battery life after one month but right now I am very satisfied with it.
It depends a lot about the way you would use it. For example I'm all days around without wifi connection avaible and of course 4g connection all the time working drains a lot of battery juice. Also having Facebook running all the time with instant messaging always on makes differences. Without using Facebook and limiting display luminosity would grant a much SOT
It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Samsung Galaxy S9+ before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I go my phone on thursday the 8th and I'm currently I'm getting about 3-4h of SOT.
I would say I'm a pretty heavy user, a lot of Podcasts, Spotify and Youtube (I've installed the Vanced version of Youtube).
I'm also not running the phone on 2k but 1080p settings. I have yet to enable batterysaving mode but I might try having it on medium where it limits CPU power to 70% and decreases background tasks.
Over night when its not plugged in i'm loosing about 1.4% per hour, during the day when I'm using it about 10-11% per hour.
Not really that impressed by it to be honest.
Although I'm coming from a Mi MAX that was designed for batterylife and that I modded to be as efficent as possible.
The phone is not rooted but I've just installed SABS, BK Disabler so I'll be disabling some bloat (I don't use SHealth, GearVR etc) and I'll see if it Improves when the phone stablizes over the coming days.

I'm getting about 3-4h of SOT with an unrooted Galaxy S9+. No power saving modes enabled and a lot of use such as Podcasts, Youtube, Spotify and such.
I am a heavy user. Today is my first full day with the phone. I restored the apps from Samsung cloud, and the messages from other phone using dongle. Yesterday I managed to fully charge the phone after restoring and configuration and it seemed fine as I achieved around 4hours sot and plugged the phone with remaining 20% battery. Today the battery went dead in below 3hours of sot and it was before 17:00, phone was unplugged around 8:00. This is not bad. This is shocking. I will maybe factory reset and restore everything from cloud, if the battery life won't improve, I will be giving the phone back..I have 6,5h of SOT on Pixel 2 XL which is satysfying. I was hoping to get around 5, but 2.5 is unacceptable.

Samsung is always like that at the beginning. Leave it to do it's thing and then check in a couple of days.
That's not my first Samsung, and I've never experienced that big battery consumption
Started of on my first charges with around 7hr sot, ended with the last two on around 3-4hrs, super confusing. I feel like the phone is draining so much in the background, so if i dont use it i wont get good enough SOT.
s9+ btw. Heavy user, snapchat/reddit gifs etc.
Are you guys using the exynos or snapdragon version of this phone?
Sent from my SM-G920T using Tapatalk
Exynos in my case. 7% batt with 3,5h SOT. That's a huge disappointment
23% with 5hr 18min screen time, 10hrs since charge. Also 3hrs of apple music and 1 hr YouTube over cellular.
I'm really happy with that.
Unplugged for 16hrs 9min. 19% battery. Screen Time 5hrs 42mins.
No complains here. The battery life is not outstanding but it is definitely acceptable.
When i turned on the device it had like 50-ish % juice and it managed to hold for like 6hours. Obviously not 6 h of SoT but just was using it on and off, installing apps, moving data, playing some media, etc...
Now its my first cycle since fully charged and i'm sitting at 50% with 4 hours of SoT. I did not do any gaming tho.
First cycle on my AT&T S9 Plus SOT over 4hrs and 52% battery life is amazing so far.

Early SOT Results
I received my Unlocked S9+ a little over 24 hours ago (US version). After setting it up last night and some this morning, I am finally on my first cycle of normal use. I am currently at just about 4 hours of SOT with 50% battery (see photo). I know it is way too early to measure the real battery performance, but thought i would share my early results. This is definitely on par with what I have been experiencing with my other phone (Pixel 2 XL) and the settings/apps are almost identical.
Standby battery drain
Charging the phone (S9+ Exynos) before bed, removing the charger and letting it drain the battery during the night, with wifi on, viber, WhatsApp & gmail syncing, I get a battery drain for the last couple of nights of 0.6% per hour, without AOD.
At least for me it's a bit better than my Exynos S8+ could manage.
Could it be, based on this post, that the SD845 version has better battery life than Exynos?

I think this theory could be correct from what I've heard.
Someone mentioned having 4 hours SOT and they're at 50% on the Snapdragon. I'm on an exynos and I certainly would only be able to get 2.5 hours to 3 hours max on about 50% battery.
The question is, can the software be tweaked enough with updates to make the exynos more efficient, I wonder?
I am on exynos and have 4 hours en 10 minutes screen time when i am on 50%
The day before yesterday my phone was up fot 1 day and 10 hours and my screen time was 7 hours and 35 minutes.
AT&T S9 Plus Snapdragon as you can see SOT 2hrs and 1min on 72 % ,so battery life is is gonna keep getting better by the time i go down to 10% pretty sure i will hit 7hrs and half to 8hrs , I also get this type of SOT on my AT&T Note 8 Snapdragon , So not sure why Exynos is having battery issues.
