How to make my N5 to show LTE indicator instead of 4G? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been searching for this but all ended up discussing LTE is not the same as 4G, well i know you can do this by using xposed + gravitybox but... is there another way to make this possible?
I want to see LTE instead of 4G. I use cataclysm last stable and also using some pro-layers

I'm on M and mine shows LTE. Never saw 4g light up even on kk and lp

Mine shows 4G on M. But strangely when running cataclysm on first boot or after an update it always shows LTE then after a while changes itself back to 4G

Why do you care what it shows? Its the same signal the phone is receiving from your carrier.

I just like LTE icon more

stock rom dowsnt show 4G, it shows LTE
you can only change that with exposed or a custom rom that has that edited

Nope, stock ROM for me shows 4G, but technically I am on LTE.

It depends on where you are or what variant of the Nexus 5 you have. I suppose if you're in Europe and you have the D821, you'll get the 4G icon, if you're in the US and you have the D820, you'll get the LTE icon.

I dont know if its D820 or 821 but yes im in EU.
So there is no way to do it? Just GB or rom-related?

The model # is on the back of the phone down near bottom where lg is stamped.

Ok it is D821 and im in EU so yes it will show 4G unless i use xposed + gravitybox
The problem is i dont want to use GB because it makes me feel my battery life is a lot worse than just cataclysm, i dont know if it is cataclysm+gb combo or what but i get a lot of system UI wakelocks while using it
Anyways thanks for your replies guys

Yup, here in Canada ours shows 4G on the orignal stock gingerbread rom.
He guys its just an icon, att doesn't even have a 4g network persay just 3.5g. The closest it will come to is LTE and non of the current phones will get LTE

On the stock ROM - yes, I'm fairly certain it did, even when in an area that clearly does not have HSPA+ service.
I haven't run stock in months so I can't be sure.

using LTE not right decision for this moment, due m'sia telco's still not get fully support yet. If u use LTE smartphones, u might facing with "no network" issue. Most of telco open the LTE coverage at some location for testing purpose..When u choose network mode on ur device as "LTE/WCDMA/GSM preferred" u can't see any signal. That's mean if u use for call u must be chg network mode as "GSM only" or u need use internet u must chg.network mode to "WCDMA only".
M'sian telco's not ready for LTE smarphones yet. That's why when u check on any telco device promo, they're didn't put LTE device on their promo..

actually i'm not much interest about LTE device coz performance & m'sian network Quality...for this part i can't explain further coz i'm working at one of m'sian telco..i bought my S4 coz of hardware..A15 & A7 processor, Samsung firmware easy to handle and freq. update.
I've facing lot issue about network and of course LTE..During testing period i'm sure LTE connection really good enough, but when telco lauch it wider u will get wht i mean.

Coming from the galaxy nexus, I'm loving the battery on this one. My only gripe is that the statusbar isn't transparent on other launchers like Nova or even custom wallpapers. I'm so afraid of screen burn in.

The best way to hv transparent status bar is using another launcher like you said like nova, apex etc or if you re rooted you can find at s4 theme at this main thread

T-Mobile weak LTE

Ever since Ive had my nexus 5 Ive noticed weaker lte signal on t-mobile. I have a nexus 4 that has the .33 radio that i flashed and i get lte in more places & better speeds. Both are using the same t-mobile APNs, for example on my nexus 5 half of my home I get HSPA+ and on the other half I do get LTE i guess I'm just in the middle of two towers that reach me. On the nexus 4 though, I always have LTE In my house and In more areas where the nexus 5 doesn't. I then later flashed the cataclysm rom and thought maybe it would help but nothing, I did find a setting within cataclysm to force lte always on and I get even more LTE service than on the nexus 4, but it takes up a lot of battery. My issue is Im back on stock KitKat and dont have that feature and T-Mobile LTE is just weak. Is it just my nexus 5 or have other people expirenced this too?

Do a search for EFS and Modems, there's a thread that has a link to all of them. Some have said earlier radios like from 4.4 get better signal. I'm on 4.4.2 stock radio and didn't see any change from one to another but that's just me. In Brooklyn and Manhattan NYC mostly btw.

Radios are here:

But there's sparse evidence any are better on LTE specifically. In theory, the latest should be the best. I get 4 bars LTE and 30Mbps d/l, yet get 5 bars H+ and 12Mbps d/l...so clearly despite a lower overall signal strength, my download performance remains perfectly acceptable.

DROID MAXX working perfectly on T-Mobile

My XT1080m is not the Developer Edition, and unrooted, but went to T-Mobile, swapped out my sim for a T-Mobile sim and everything is working perfectly.
Just switch preferred network to LTE/GSM/UMTS and data, phone calls, and texts work just fine

No need to unlock or root anything. Keep in mind that you need to be on a particular version of 4.2.2 (mentioned earlier in this thread I believe) in order to get LTE speeds. If you update to 4.4 you will have issues with calling and texting unless you disable LTE and stick with HSPA+

I'd rather keep it into a H/H+. :/ I wanna know what I'm using @shooterlgk. I'm sure many others would agree. Unfortunately for you your that small percentage that wants what you want.
You just gotta find a Dev who can do it. Maybe try contacting whoever makes gravitybox to add that feature in. That guy is always adding more and more and more features, even VERY VERY VERY small ones.

Why would you want to make at say something incorrect?
If you want 4g/LTE changing the icon won't make a difference, if you are still connected to hspa, connecting to LTE/4g will.. And then it should say LTE instead.

He wants the H/H+ to say 4G(he could have it 4G/4G+)and LTE to say LTE.
Sent from my Ñ£×Ú$ 5
I get that, but since 4g is synonymous with lte in most parts of the world and hspa+ is an extension of the 3g standard at best it makes no sense to make it say 4g when using hspa/hspa+. If anything, 4g should replace lte in the statusbar.(technically you cant describe lte in its current form as 4g either, but since the providers branded it that way, it'll have to do for now)
You would need to edit your ROMs SystemUI.apk, in the res/drawables folders, find the images for the data and copy the 4G one and paste it and rename it to the name of the H one.
That is how you can do it, for editing the SystemUI you would need to use something like APK Tool.
Just know that
H =/= 4G,
H+ =/= 4G,
LTE =/= 4G.
4G is 4G and changing icons wont change that
I just hate the h icon. I had an s4 before an would get a 4g icon and once I came to the nexus I got an h..and I tried messing with the system ui says icons r missing
