To be honest I am completely new to the entire android ecosystem having come from an iPhone. I would like to switch to a different ROM (Xtrestolite) so as to improve my battery life and overall performance, but I have no idea where to start. I use a Macbook so all the guides that I do see are basically inapplicable to me since they use software that requires windows. If anyone could explain to me how I can go about clean flashing this ROM on my device, or point me in the direction of an updated guide I would be greatly appreciative. To give you a sense of where my android knowledge is, I was able to root my phone with pingpong, but I do not even know what the use is in backing up my phone in Titanium, I don’t really know how to use it really. Sorry for such a large request, I just want to start tinkering with my phone, but am lost at where to start. Thank you.

Hi
I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S through Optus here in Australia. Like many others, the phone is running frustratingly slow. After reading many articles on this, I have decided to root the phone, then run the one click lag fix. Rooting will also allow me to use Titanium Backup which I am keen to do.
I am very new to all this phone stuff and so far, every rooting method I have tried has failed to work (2 methods involving downloading an update.zip, one automatic method through a PC). I think this may be because my Australian phone is slightly different to the galaxy's that the root guides were created for.
My phone specs are:
Build number: Froyo.DTJP5
Baseband version: I9000DTJP3
Firmware version: 2.2
I'd greatly appreciate anyone who can point me in the right direction for applying root to this phone. Or if anyone thinks there is a better option for speeding the phone up, please let me know.
you can either apply a one click lag fix (available in the market) or follow this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728754
Where can I find a stock image to recover my SNS to? All I can find are custom ROMs, but I like the stock image and want to keep it. Can I just unlock the bootloader and then root, or does unlocking the bootloader delete the image (I thought it only deleted data) and that's why I need to flash a new ROM? Is there a way to root without unlocking the bootloader? I've spent the last month reading countless guides on countless websites (here, lifehacker, androidforums, dottech, etc), but I'm soOo confused because every guide is different! Speaking of which, I need help finding the "n00biest" guide on how to unlock/root my SNS. Every guide either lacks details for a n00b like me or has multiple comments from people saying it didn't work. I also read that custom ROMs don't receive updates from Google; is this true? The ONLY reason I want to root is to use apps requiring root (Titanium Backup, AdAway, etc). I've already installed JDK, SDK, and USB drivers. HALP! Background info: I rooted my last phone, a Galaxy S (Captivate), with SuperOneClick, and it didn't change the image, so all this is new to me.

So i just got this S3 for really darn cheap in great shape. I figured i wanted to root and use custom recovery and then maybe try some new roms. But it comes to my attention through like all the helpful tutorials that the bootloader is locked and there is almost zero guarentee that even the one that have done this will work without many issuses. so im just seeing if anyone thinks its worth it to try with this phone or look else where and deal with 4.4.2
Of course its always worth getting rid of all the bloatware ! I have a galaxy S3 rooted with the liquid smooth ROM and love it .
The bootloader is not locked I had to root it and remove the battery on reboot in order to pass it or it will try to reload back to default also took a few times .
I would say it is worth it to root. From there your choices are limited since you are on 4.4.2 with the NE1 bootloader.
I bought such a device in May, proceeded to root, install SafeStrap, and then flashed the SuperLiteROM.
NOTE, there are only three ROMs safe to use on an i535 with the NE1 bootloader.
DO NOT try to flash a custom recover such as CWM or TWRP.
to quote myself from another thread:
I picked up a used i535 a few months ago as a device to mod and learn. I had no intentions of using it as my daily phone - I'm on AT&T with an i747. I found it was already on the NE1 bootloader and modem, I hadn't read enough before purchasing.
I was able to root it with TowelRoot. Following that I installed BusyBox and then installed SafeStrap Recovery for devices with the NE1 bootloader, see here.
From what I have seen there are three ROMs available to this device on NE1; stock NE1, SuperLiteROM, and Paul Pizz. This thread is a good resource for all but Paul Pizz, which is here. I after installing SafeStrap I flashed SuperLiteROM to the stock slot, it seems to avoid some issues when flashed here instead of a secondary slot. Since then I have installed XPosed framework and have several mods working with no issues.

The XPosed module I spent the most time tinkering with was XPrivacy.
I have two of these and I would like to Root at least one of them. Root only not interested in a custom ROM. Just want to remove the bloat ware and add a WiFi Teter app but both require root access. Both of these phone where in use by other family members and are in excellent condition but both were upgraded to 4.4.2 while they were using them. I've spent countless hours, haven't found one that states this version is rootable, yet OneClickRoot.com states it is rootable. However, I've read some horror stories about them.
Can someone explain how to do this or point me to location where its clearly written how and where to get the files needed.

I finally figured it out for myself researching this past couple of days and I have that exact phone version. You got to use towelroot. You simply need to allow non google play store apps to be installed on the phone. And then download the towelroot .apk file and run it and waahh-laaah. I tried using odin to unroot and some other things and they never worked for me. Towelroot did, and I have that exact same 4.4.2 build and etc.
If you're interested in getting rid of the bloatware as I was then you might be interested in this. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2797314
I tried this last night with success and installed the superliterom and a lot of bloatware is now gone. I believe this includes wifi-tethering as well. You are basically limited to touchwiz roms with a 4.4.2 build based from my reading; could be wrong. With this particular phone, once you've updated the firmware to 4.4.2 you can't unlock the bootloader without bricking the phone; period. The superliterom is basically like stock without a good portion of the bloatware. Hope this helps!
Basically, I want to pick up a cheap used phone and planning to pick this one up, but I want to get it "clean" for daily usage. I know virtually nothing about modding android, but I do have experience jailbreaking iOS so I'm not too afraid to get my hands dirty. My plan is to root the device and install a custom firmware (preferably something like stock android 8 or a clean custom build or something?) and would love if someone could help me figure out where to get started. Thanks!
Afaik, the J7 V isnt rootable. The Bootloaders locked, which means a modded boot.img will refuse to boot, any odin (samsung's version of fastboot) flashing results in a fail on the security check, and all that jazz. I know this post is old, but if your planning to remove bloatware, your tough outta luck.
