I can't figure out why on Cyanogen OS I get a exclamation mark (!) by the WiFi symbol.
I have amazing WiFi and brand new wiring and equipment and I'd know if I had weak WiFi.
Also no other ROM does this to me. Have yet to figure this out.

That "!" means that you have a connection to the wifi but no internet connection, so maybe your devices IP is wrong(if you have a static one) or your MAC filter is active
But neither of those things are true because I can flash a different ROM and enter my same old WiFi password and not have the issue at all. Tested with oxygen OS and Exodus OS.

Hey Mytheos, I'm having the exact same problem, and I can't find a solution. You and maybe one other person have been having the same issue, but no avail. Are you also getting poor reception in places you used to have good reception? Because that's another issue I have ...
Well. I find that the bars indicate lower signal but it might be either very slight changes in reception from cyanogen OS or maybe just a graphical difference in the bars. I don't feel like my service is worsened..

You probably need to add some additional settings to the wifi connection. And on a side note, your phone will your mobile data when your wifi doesn't work so watch out before downloading anything on your phone

I noticed lol. Happened a little while ago. What's funny is that a quick toggle of airplane mode corrects this. Even a turning the phone off then on.
I don't understand why its only this ROM.

In a terminal try running 'ip address show'. Look for wlan0 and what is saying after inet.
Should be something like 192.168.1.8/24
If it's not there it's an issue with you dhcp client. You could then try to run 'dhcpcd wlan0' to get an IP manually.
I fixed the issue in this way
The taggle of airplane mode didn't work for me. I was able to use all the apps like facebook and whatsapp but only chrome didn't work and there was that permanent exclamation mark on the status bar. So I went in recovery mode e clicked on fix permissions...and a wipe of cache and dalvik . After reboot there was no mark exclamation anymore.

Guys,
Why I cannot access Market via wifi connection. Browsing, Email or Gtalk works fine but when i accessing Market or Blakpmarket there's return error with "Network Error Occurs" ?
I can only access those via Network Operator.
Any explanation regarding this problem? Is it a bugs with CM 5.0.6 that i've updated last night?
-dowdow-
market verifies yiu via google talk over the network. so if you dont have cell service it wont authenticate you which means no entry...
Sent from my Nexus One using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
How long did this issue take place? Did you bother turning wifi off and back on? I'm not calling you stupid, but a lot of people get the problem once hit retry, doesn't work, and flock here for help when help isn't even needed. I get this now and again. No idea why, but it never sticks.
Any one know how to reset ur wire less setting. Im haveing a ip address conflic I guess at work. Wont pull any internet . Problem is I have no way of changing it on work computer. So I need a diff ip adress.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I would think turning it off and back on should do it...Should grab a new ip address..that or statically map one. The DHCP server should be checking for an ip before giving you one so I think that just turning it off and on should fix it.
Tried that and tried forgetting but same ip .105.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Maybe try removing the network and adding it again will help.
D its see remove network but see forget network. That dont help either.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Ok stilk no luck. Downloaded wifi static from market to change ip address and stil no luck. Either I don't know how to use the app or phones messed up on this router.
But I have the exact same router and can connect fine at home.8.8mbs at home
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Well..the DHCP has the ip associated with your MAC address so everytime you turn on the wireless it asks the dhcp server for an address and the dhcp says..o hey I have one here already for you. If you turn off the wireless can you still ping the address? If so then the dchp may be set up wrong and not checking for dupes before giving the address out.
How would I ping my phone?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
O sorry no..I meant turn off the wireless on the phoine the go to a computer and ping the address from there. But..if you said it was a duplicate ip address ill just take your word. No idea then.
To the OP,
What's happening to your device? Are you able to successfully connect to your WiFi but not get any Internet data (browse the web, search YouTube, or use any programs that require internet)? Are you getting an error message saying there is a conflict?
This happened to me yesterday. While I didn't get any error messages, my Cap's WiFi was able to connect to my company's wireless router. However, I could not get online, search YouTube, update my Daily Briefing or use any programs that require the internet. It says it's connected however I'm not getting any internet data. I touch "Forget" and try again several times. I even did a factory reset and still no-go. I called Samsung and they put me through Level 2 Support. While waiting on the phone with the tech, it finally worked for no reason. I was dumbfounded with the tech. Weird!!!
Addendum: When I couldn't connect to my company's WiFi with WPA/WPA2 PSK, I went to another office to connect to an unsecured WiFi. It worked. I got on the internet. My WiFi with WEP at home works. However, the problem was with my company's WPA/WPA2 PSK security WiFi. I'm not sure if the security has something to do with the issue.
got it solved..seems I wasent using the wifistatic program correctly.
Also no security at work just open connection.
If some one needs the steps I used I can post later when I get home.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Please post your steps. This would be very useful. I am having similar problems at work wifi and I dont think it is the Captivate that has the issue.
Srry had stuff come up yesterday.
Any way download wifistatic from market. Make sure ur are seeing a access. Open wifi static and add config. It will set all settings. After it sets settings chang ip address number to a higher number like.120. Save it. Then go to ur phone wifi settings and hit the menu button and select advanced. Go in there and make sure the ip address u wanted and click save..
If it dont work after this then its not a ip address conflic..
Srry typing from phone.

Just received my Nexus 5 today and I'm noticing some strange connectivity issues while on WiFi. Some apps would complain network is unavailable, Facebook would load with no pictures, etc. This happens randomly, sometimes after few minutes others - an hour(s). Rebooting the phone or even cycling WiFi off/on usually recovers it, until it happens again. Cellular data works fine all the time. It can't be the WiFi network I'm connecting to as I have a myriad of devices that have worked and continue working without any problems.
I tried 3 other WiFi networks (different routers) with different configurations of encryption as well no encryption, switching between 5GHz, 2.4GHz, no matter what, problem occurs sooner or later.
Noticed on Google support forums few users describing exactly the same issue, surprised I didn't find reports here on XDA. Maybe not many people got their phones yet.
Anyone else getting the same "treatment" from their new Nexus 5?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I am seeing exactly the same thing. Wifi will work great, then all of a sudden, nothing. Stays that way for a couple of minutes, then all of a sudden it works again.
How many bars does the sifi icon show ?
Number of bars doesn't matter. I can have full bars sitting a meter from the router and issue would happen anyways.
I tried playing with WiFi optimizations in advanced settings to no avail unfortunately. Hopefully this is a bug that Google can quickly fix with a software update

Same here. Got my N5 yesterday and experienced the same at home. Same for my brother.
Hope that gets clarified soon. Not the nicest feeling having a new phone with that (or any) kind of issue...
Yes, my N5 started doing the same on my home wifi connections (using Apple's Airport Extreme 2.4/5GHz router).
The Playstore or Youtube apps would not display images or take forever. When I switched wifi off those apps worked fine.
I got it working again when I "forgot" my wifi setting for the 2.4 and 5Ghz channels then reconnected to the 2.4. I'll let that run for a day or so then try activating the 5Ghz.
Hmmm... This may have been what was going on here...

I usually don't have connection issues outright, but do have issues reconnecting. However I did notice I list connection overnight after I went to bed.

Nah. Its no connection issue. We can connect easily and have full signal bars, but still no connection randomly for a couple of minutes.

Hmm - no I don't think that's the one. Phone connects fine, just over time randomly does this thing with the connectivity issues.
--EDIT
OOPs my mistake...
I looked in Setting/Wifi/Advanced ...
I turned OFF "Avoid Poor Connections"
and everything seems to work the way i want ( when i tell it to go to Wifi, it does that )

i added star to this issue because of same problem . If enough stars get added Google may get on it.
(Didn't know if I should create a new thread for this as it is a wifi issue but seems to be soemthing different than what the OP decribed, my issues are related only to playstore app downloading)
I too am having terrible wifi issues on my new Nexus 5. But mine are different from those described here I think. Whenever I cycle through the wifi, turn it off and on again it doesn't fix the problem (not temporarily and ofc not permanently)
When browsing the web, the play store and mostly everything it works great and is very fast, BUT when downloading or updating an app the wifi speed is practically non-existant.
Sometimes showing that it will take 25 hours to download a 25mb app :S
This while my Galaxy Nexus on the same wifi network is as speedy as ever.
I have tried factory resetting my Nexus 5, I have cleared the cache and data of the play services app and of the play store app, I have tried changing the wifi bands (from auto, to 5 to 2.4 and back to auto), I have turned off the wifi optimization, but none of those things helped. I even tried some DNS HSPC wifi settings thingy I read here
That didn;t help either.
I have unplugged my router and replugged it in but that didn't help either.
I literally had to leave my brand new Nexus 5 downloading all night just so that it could install the apps I wanted on it. So far for playing around with the phone on day 1
What makes it even weirder is that occasionaly the wifi issues resolve itself and I can get good download speeds for several seconds or sometimes up to a few minutes, but then right after it is straight back to crap speeds. Some other reported that only while making a portion of the map available offline in Google Maps their app download speeds were great, but that didn't work for me either.
I don't know what to do and if it is a hardware issue or a software issue. Please help me.
Below some info that might be useful to helping me solve this.
White Nexus 5 32GB
Bought from US play store
Shipped to and using it in the Netherlands
Currently does not have a SIM card inside (that is still in my Galaxy Nexus till the wifi issues are resolved)
Unrooted, only installed the mandatory update during the setup
All apps downloaded are apps that are also on my Galaxy Nexus which works without a hitch
Any and all suggestions/ideas/help are welcome
I think the problem somehow related to DNS. I found that if I configure static IP settings and point DNS to Google's instead router's, things work normally. I reconfigured my router to advertise 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as DNS servers for the DHCP and now for over 24 hours I haven't experienced the disconnection issue.
If your router cannot be reconfigured, try assigning static IP settings and Google's DNS to see if it helps.
I still believe that's a software bug on the phone, we can't blame a device (the router) that has worked for years and works fine with everything else but the Nexus 5, being at fault.

I currently can't reconnect to my Wi-Fi at home as it's stuck showing the last scan I did some 40 miles away at a shopping centre earlier today.
Of course none of these networks are now present, yet all mine are shown as not found!
Guessing a reboot will fix it as toggling Wi-Fi didn't. Mobile data is working fine.

Not as tech as I want to be, so could you explain to me what the difference is in setting the DNS to Google's instead of routers? I have no idea what DNS is/does so what happens when you point it soemwhere else?

DNS stands for Domain Name Service. What it basically does is to translate those easy to remember names such as www.Google.com to the actual numeric address (also called IP address) of the server that serves that site on the Internet. Home routers almost always sport built-in DNS service to speed up name translation requests from internal devices. What I figured is going on on the nexus 5 is it "doesn't seem to like" some DNS servers. Works fine with some, doesn't with others. What happens is at one point, for whatever reason, it stops being able to translate names to addresses and as result "decides" there is no working connection as it fails to connect to the corresponding servers. Google hosts publicly available DNS servers with the easy to remember IP addresses of 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 which apparently Nexus 5 doesn't have problem working with. Once it gets "instructed" to use them instead router's, everything works fine.
At least that's what I figured is going on so far.

BTW, just found one small and very useful app that can display information about WiFi connection as well as DNS servers associated to it.

Thanks, but that wouldn't fix my issue right, because it doesn't explain why only play store downloads are terribly slow while the rest works fine.
Gave it a shot and at first it seemed to work, but after a short while the problem re-arose
DNS has nothing to do with weak or lost WIFI connections...
You can be perfectly connected, at full n speed to a WIFI AP without getting proper acces to Internet : THIS can DNS isue.
But in no way a DNS isue can leads to lost or very weak WIFI signal.
2 solutions are possible with Nexus 5 :
- WIFI module has the same badly coded shape as camera one...
- its hardware related wich, no need to say, could be the worst case...
I am having the same issue since day one. In fact it just occurred as I was replying to this thread. Mostly occurs when the phone comes out of sleep mode. However it will occur often and at random.

Yesterday the Connection Optimizer started popping up an error box about every minute or so about needing to update the version of Adobe Flash on my phone to prevent malware. It then takes me to Adobe's site to download a new version, which of course, does not exist. I never even installed Flash on this device and not sure what the Connection Optimizer has to do with Flash/Security anyways. Either way, it is annoying because it just keeps popping up at random.
At first I thought it might be something with Dolphin Browser and having Flash enabled. I even tried installing the latest version of Flash that is modded (here on XDA) for use with 4.4 to see if that would fix it. It didn't. So I uninstalled Flash player and disabled it in Dolphin Browser and the prompt still pops up.
Anyone else run into this issue?
Just want to chime back in and add that a co-worker of mine is having the same issue on his S5. Seems to happen when device switches to Wifi.

Just turn off connection optimizer
All it does is switch you to Wi-Fi automatically every once in a while
Its a waste of battery imi

I get your point and that is what I have done. However, I do feel that if it is a feature on the device and is not working there should be a fix for it instead of just turning it off. Wondering why (2) of our S5 devices are having the issue but yet doesn't seem anyone else is, or at least not speaking up about it. Called Sprint and they have nothing on record of it being mentioned by others. As I'm still in my "trial" period with the device I want to make sure all sensors and features work as they should.
I use My Data Manager to monitor my data. 3 days back, I noticed my data was being used rapidly so I went into the app to find who the culprit was. I have attached screenshots of it.
First off, what exactly is Quickboot and secondly, why is it using my internet!? I have it on wifi right now and its still using up my bandwidth but I'm not concerned about that. I went into Settings>Apps to try and disable it and I also rebooted my phone to see if that would fix it. It did not.
Anybody have any ideas on how to counter this?
additional info
Here is a screenshot of my Data Usage in Settings.
Also, I checked Developer Options and the Quickboot option is NOT enabled.
Quick boot is a setting in the developers options(settings->about phone -> tap 5x on build-number) which enables the phone to go in a much lighter standby mode and by this it will boot faster...
And I have no clue why it drains your mb's[emoji53]

You should read his comment above.... It's not hard.
He said he did not have it enabled. And by knowing how to activate it, he should know what it does.
Further research
I looked into a bit more and it turns out that it uses 7 MB every single hour. That exact number of megabytes, every single hour. Doesnt matter if its on Wifi or Data. So odd, I cant figure out why...
The answer is: clean flash lol
I dunno either I never bothered to look into it, but I week grab that app and see what it says

Solution (-ish)
I ended up rooting my phone, which required a factory reset (to unlock the bootloader). So my problem is gone but never found an actual solution to it.
what you can do is setup hotspot on computer. disable mobile data and try to repreoduce. If reprodicable install wireshark and catch the traffic on the hotspot network adapter then analyse what it is. it should give younsome idea by whois ip lookup on the destination ip. maybe even some info in the packets.
iff ssl try fidler instead of wireshark with decode ssl.
