[Completed] [Q] Order of Procedures for Unlocking, Rooting, Custom ROMs - XDA Assist

I have my first smartphone. I would like to know where to start and how to proceed. So much of what I read here is excellent, but I have no idea of whether I "First" unlock the bootloader, or "First" Flash the Firmware, or backup the stock ROM, FIRST. For clarity's sake: I own a Moto E (2nd generation). This device is often called a Moto E (2015) on these Forums, even though the phone infos in Settings/About Phone/Model number: "Moto E (2nd generation) with 4G LTE. And lastly, I use Linux. Ubuntu ver. 14.04LTS (Trusty Tahr), and while I have access to a friend's Win7 (32-bit) laptop, I would prefer using Linux as Windows is really a pain to use in comparison to Ubuntu. So, if some kind soul would show me the correct order to get to the point where I can install the Cyanogen Mod on this phone, I would be obliged.

Help A Newbie With Installing Cyanogen Mod On Moto E 2nd Gen LTE

I have been using my Motorola Moto E 2nd Gen. LTE phone (SKU is XT1527) with the stock ROM for about a year now. I'm new to modding phones, and I have some trepidation in installing Cyanogenmod 13 on my phone. I'm willing to do it, but I do not know what to do and how to do it. I would like assistance in modding my phone, and I will provide details if needed.
I've searched for my phone on this site, and I have found this thread on this forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e-2015/orig-development/rom-cyanogenmod-13-moto-e-lte-t3329100
The part that confuses me is trying to find the right modem and/or baseband (although it is referred to as firmware in the thread) files that was given by the link provided in the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e-2015/help/moto-e-2015-modems-t3296044
(Some relevant info about my phone and computer)
Motorola Moto E 2nd Gen with LTE
XT1527
Android Version 5.1
Using Ting Mobile
Linux Mint 17.3
