[Q] Update AOE2 trying to installing when I have A0C3 installed already - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S6

This is odd. I flash back to stock from being rooted, had to take the phone to verizon. I got home, did a factory reset, rooted with pingpong, loaded my apps. Then woke up this morning asking me to install this AOE2 update.
Any idea why it's asking to install? I also thought being rooted stop OTA updates.

No, rooting alone will not stop update requests. Either go into system/apps and rename SDM.apk to SDM.apk.bak or get titanium backup and freeze system updates 1.0
Some Roms will have this disabled but stock wouldn't.

Thanks!, but any idea why it wants to install an old update?

There is only two. OC3 the first. OE2 is the 2nd one and another one is getting ready to come out.
I take it you are on OC3

I am on A0C3. Are you saying that OE2 is a newer update. I must be confused.

Yes. OE2 IS newer

cool, So I was confused.
Now can I install that update, then reroot?

Yes. But be careful about the update after that. It might not have root.
Use pingpong6 Hit get root. When supersu comes up, hit install. It will say it can't. Pingpong will come back up. Hit the download files button. Then it will say try again. Do it and you will be asked to reboot. A little different than OC3.

Now if I install the update and turns out I cannot root again. couldn't i just flash back to AOC3 and root. Or do these updates apply a firmware or something that will stay after flashing back?
thanks again

OE2 will root After that it is not known. Not everyone can flash back to an earlier firmware like we can. After OE2, who knows?

You can't go back I'm pretty sure
But you can root OE2. The update after will not be rootable by pingpong. A new exploit will need to be found to get root

ok, thanks. I'll stay where I am and freeze the update file for now. Rather not mess it up.

I got my phone last Saturday and it already had OE2 on it. Rooted just fine, I have system update frozen now.

For what it is worth, I think OE2 is better and would upgrade. At least try it. You can always go back down.

Upgrade and flash clean lite. Huge improvement over stock. Scott does great work

I'm running the stock deodexed Rom by gunthermic. I have the 3minit battery mod installed. Can it be installed on his odexed rom? Can you even decompile an odexed rom?

So I was looking at the clean rom. It mentioned Knox removed. Does that mean that installing this rom, knox will not be tripped? then If i have to have warranty work I can load the stock rom back and be fine?

None of the Roms on our Verizon site will trip knox. Nobody would install them if they did.

Lost root with last OTA update

I am scared that i know the answer to this but thought i would ask. I was rooted, unlocked the bootloader the whole bit and was running Jellywiz for a while. I decided to go back to stock via restore. My phone started downloading the latest verizon update and without thinking i agreed to it. I lost root and was wondering if there is a easy way to get it back without physically going through the whole rooting process again? i tried installing supersu and doing the update but that did not work. Thanks in advance
You could try Odin-ing a image thats already rooted but honestly to be safe I'd just go through the steps again. I have done that myself once (not on a samsung phone) . Even though it sucks to lose your setup I'd rather be careful then risk a brick. Just my .02 cents though.

all current root methods work with the latest ota...just reroot and enjoy.

If you want to update, but you're rooted/custom recovery/custom kernel...

...and you DON'T want to perform a Factory Reset.
Figured this out while returning to the stock kernel after poor performance on a custom one...
THIS WILL LIKELY NOT WORK IF YOU ARE ON A CUSTOM ROM
If you are still on the Stock ROM you can do this to get new updates from your carrier (I have only tried AT&T):
1. Unfreeze AT&T updater (if you have it frozen)
2. Use ODIN to return to stock WITHOUT performing a factory reset. AdamOutler has a thread HERE with the stock firmware download in the Android Development section
3. Boot up and check for updates
4. After you have updated, root it, apply your custom recovery, and/or kernel again
5. Hit the THANKS button below
All your apps and settings will remain. You may have to re-sign-in to some, but you should be good to go.

Where can you find out when carrier updates are released?
This will always work no matter what Rom your on...even if your on aosp...Odin is created so that you can return to stock. Once your on stock you can receive any update available...

Yes, however if you are on a custom ROM you must perform a factory reset prior to or after ODIN, which will make you lose your apps, settings, etc.
If you are still on the stock ROM, you don't have to factory reset... which is kind of the point for people who want the update but don't want to factory reset.

Assumed as much, but wanted to be sure. I'm on this forum exclusively and hourly anyways lol. So much reading to be done!
Will updates be specific to carrier? For instance I'm on Telus in Canada so I'll need to wait for my specific update, download and flash via ODIN? (Since I'm 'custom' status and won't be able to OTA. Root only, stock recovery, kernel and ROM.)
And thanks btw!

Unfortunately I can't speak for anything other than AT&T since I don't have the ability to test any other carrier's devices... however the update will likely be pushed by your carrier with their proprietary update mechanism.
If you want to use something other than OTA, you can wait for a flashable zip when it comes available, which will likely be pretty quick after initial release.

Thanks man. One last question, would this flashable zip flash via ODIN or Custom Recovery (TWRP/CWM) or either method?

Maybe a tad off topic, but if one were to follow the directions in the OP, wouldn't it still not work? You'd still have the custom unlock button with stock firmware, which would prevent it to look for any OTA update.
Maybe I'm wrong?

I thought the same thing, until I tried it and the OTA came over just fine. That's one of the reason I started this thread, so others would know they can do it.
The ODIN gives you back the stock recovery so you can pull the OTA.

Ok, how about if one follows your method and then updates via AT&T OTA. Would it then get rid of the custom unlock status? How does one remove this if they're not rooted with 100% stock? I don't get why it still shows it.

I am not 100% certain what all gets looked at when the firmware runs its "custom status" check. I do know that there are a wide variety of fixes/solutions that work for some and not for others... I have the custom icon, but it doesn't bother me, so I haven't done too much research into it.

Doesn't bother me one bit, although my bootloader is unlocked so I don't get the unlock icon boot screen.
Maybe a stupid question, but could one flash SGH-I337 UCUAMDL firmware instead since its the latest, or would it better to flash the original firmware then update?

update to 4.3 unsuccessful ?

i updated my verizon Galaxy S3 (I535) today, and forgot to unroot it so expectedly i go the "unsuccessful" update, but it did update, i have the changes. but i cannot get into supersu so i cannot unroot my phone (never really used the rooting anyways)
is there anyway to unroot my phone atm? and/or to make sure i have the entire update?
(wasnt really expecting to get the update at all with a rooted phone)
also i cannot get into supersu cause my phone is still recongnized as 4.3 instead of 4.1.2
...not really sure what to do
Hmm, well you can root using SafeRoot according to multiple users in our general TW 4.3 thread.
Maybe you can unroot after you root using that but there's no way to downgrade or Odin flash a ML1 tar unless we see one published in the near future. If you unroot after rooting then you could probably try installing the TW 4.3 update.zip in recovery but there's no guarantees it'll work and if it messes up, you're SOL until further notice.
Edit: so its clear, you can ONLY root. Flashing roms is not possible or recommended as of this moment if on TW 4.3

no way to downgrade either atm i take it?
if i could down grade i could unroot easily and then update

Nah, you'll have a hardbricked phone with seemingly no way to fix it if you attempt to downgrade. If/when VRUCML1 stock tar file is posted then you could flash that in Odin. What you'll need is something specifically for TW 4.3 whether that's root, root/unlock, or Odin. Nothing older is compatible.

I believe that by going to the OTA 4.3, you are no longer rooted. The update "unrooted" you.

the update database doesnt recongize my phone tho, and thats why it couldnt complete the update.
but according to my phone im still on 4.3 technically
it has been some time, there might already be something out for all i know by now

Can I take OTA update and keep root?

I am running stock 4.1.2 rooted and froze SDM 1.0 with titanium backup to avoid the constant update reminders.
I am now curious can I accept the updates and keep root somehow?
Is something like OTA root keeper worthwhile?
You can still root but cannot unlock the bootloader. I'd recommend reading the 4.3 sticky thread before taking the ota even if you want to stay stock.

Are you saying that because of the 4.3 issues?
I would rather not mess with the phone but I just got a gear 2 neo and it will not connect. I think this is because of the older android version. The specs on the gear software say it requires 4.2 or higher

Ya you need 4.3.
So you have options, since you're have a galaxy gear you're probably going to be running stock TouchWiz, so I would just take the upgrade.
You can root later, but the gear would never work with aosp anyway. Safestrap can make your phone run pretty well with a TouchWiz custom rom if you eventually decide you want one.
Or you can load a custom TouchWiz 4.3 rom right now and see if it connects, then you wouldn't lock your phone down permanently.

OK then read the sticky threads in the development section, everything there has guides available for rooting and installing roms, then ask more questions if you have them.
Make sure you're reading the older sticky thread, not the 4.3 one.

I've been unable to even get the OTA to work. It downloads then fails on install.
I have reset the flash counter but thought that was all that would be required to repair/delete before running the OTA update.
Does anyone have a suggestion?
Just to clarify the phone is currently rooted (casual method) on 4.1.2. I never touched the rom or bootloader after rooting i just installed titanium backup and froze all the bloat. Id like to get the OTA even if i lose root.
I reset the flash counter with triangle away and did a batch unfreeze with titanium backup. The OTA downloads then fails on install.
You would probably need to unfreeze everything for the update to work, at least thats what I have heard.

Use this thread to Odin flash 4.3. It's the exact same as taking the Ota.

I'm sure you already know what taking the update entails, just be absolutely sure it's what you want to do before you flash it. There's no going back.

How to go to stock from 4.1.2

I have gone thru the thread on how to go back to stock however i still have some questions, my s3 had a broken screen for quiet sometime so i am not sure where to start on getting it back to stock or whatever to get me back on the latest firmware. It is rooted on 4.1.2 but i dont know how to check if bootloader was unlocked or not.
If i can just flash a file to get me the latest i can do that as well. It does have TWRP for recovery

Its not unlocked by default but the last version of Android you were able to unlock it was on 4.1.2. You can unlock it with casual or ez unlock. If you however unroot it and take the OTA up to 4.4.2 your bootloader will be permanently locked and you will not be able to revert it back

You have to unroot first. Once your unrooted you can take the OTA. Just warning you about the bootloader being locked once you take the OTA. As far as straight to 4.4.2 I'm not sure. Never took an OTA on my S3. Start with unrooting first and see where it goes
