[TWRP][surnia] Squid TWRP Recovery for Moto E LTE - E 2015 Android Development

This is my version of TWRP built for the 2015 Moto E LTE. It should work fine, but using it is a try at your own risk procedure. Your bootloader must be unlocked to use this recovery. Fastboot mode is used to flash or boot this recovery. To enter fastboot mode, turn off your device, hold PWR and VolDn for 3 seconds, then let go.
Differences between upstream TWRP and my fork:
My original green theme
No SuperSU
No TWRP app
No HTC Dumlock cruft
Updated pigz compressor (slightly faster and more tolerant of corruption)
To temporarily boot this recovery:
Code:
fastboot boot twrp.img
To permanently flash it:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
The download is up on the downloads tab.

Yes, the recovery does not depend on your kernel or ROM.

I've been working on a new Squid Kernel version for Android 5.1, but I haven't released it yet as a standalone kernel. PM me if you want to try a beta.

About camera on stock kernel
Hello there! I just ordered this phone and plan on rooting it, but with the camera breaking after rooting it and all guess I'll try one of your kernels, which version would you recommend?
Also, installing a stock kernel would fix the camera?

At this point, I'd say your best option is to install the 5.1 stock ROM and root that. The rooted camera issue only happens on 5.0, and not on 5.1. The 5.1 stock ROM is much smoother and more stable than the stock 5.0 ROM anyways.

Thanks for your reply. So in that case first I'd have to update the phone to Android 5.1 normally, right? Directly through the phone? After rooting in 5.1 would any custom kernels be necessary, to fix anything, or is it running all right with just 5.1 + root?

Yes, no custom kernels are required for things to work properly on 5.1. The easiest way to update is to flash the @Q9Nap 5.1 stock ROM zip with TWRP.

I see, I was worried I wouldn't be able to update this phone since I'm outside the U.S. and it seems the updates are restricted by the carriers. You said that I should update to 5.1 and root that, but to install the stock rom by @Q9Nap you mention wouldn't I have to root first?
Also, could you provide a link to the mentioned stock rom? or is this one? http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e-2015/development/fxz-moto-e-lte-xt1527-recovery-t3135210

After unlocking the bootloader, you can flash whatever you want regardless of your carrier. The Q9Nap zip you linked is the correct one, provided your model is an XT1527 or XT1524 (other models won't work with his zip). You don't need to be rooted to upgrade, you just need TWRP installed to flash the zip.

I'm currently trying to get twrp onto my brothers Moto E, it's the xt1511 variant, i did get it unlocked, but every attempt to flash this recovery gives me back a image size exceed partition and it fails. Do i need to use mfastboot? I'm running the 2nd gen X and this moto E is a odd little bastard.
Edit: Got same "Image Size exceeds partition" error when attempting with Mfastboot.

Afaik, therr is no recovery compatible with GPE 5.0.1 fully. We need the kernel sources to make a recovery compatible with it.
Can you please give me another method to flash CyanogenMod 12 on my GPE 5.0.1 converted XT1033?I shall be grateful to you.

You cant try the method cyanogenmod asks its users to follow [here]. They link you to some cwm recovery. This is a technique which I can not guarentee will work and i suggest you try it out only if you are fairly acquainted with messing around with your phone and fixing soft bricked devices.

The recovery does boot. I tested it on my device just now. But as you said, since it is pretty old, it shouldnt work further.

A million thanx to you @lost101 we all were eagerly waiting for this.....Great work..Keep it up bro...thanx again...I am waiting for 5.0.1 flashable zip...
Updater binary failed to flash. Downloaded twice, using recommended twrp.
Was waiting for it anxiously.
Can anyone confirm that is it working on XT1034 (AWS)?
Edit: My boot loader version is 40.22 :-/
I'm using PACMAN RC-3 (4.4.4).
How to update it?
Should I download this one and flash 5.0.1 over or wait for 5.0.1? I mean will I be able to flash it over 5.0 without having to wipe anything?
Thanks, lost101. Just a couple of questions...
Considering it's a soak test. How stable is this?
What languages are included?

I think its almost stable (exceptions are like screen flickering nd a bit less baytery life which is imoroved in 5.0.1)
After a third download, it flashed. Only problem I found was su binary was not installed when I opended su app. Flashing latest chainfire su left me in bootloop.

In the past, this is because the user has updated SuperSU via Google Play. Try to not upgrade the installed version for now.
EDIT: I see now there is an issue with root. I'm still testing, but this zip might be what you need: http://download.chainfire.eu/599/CF...to-Root-falconumtsds-falconretbrds-xt1033.zip
UPDATE: Reading the 'Soak Test' threads, people have successfully installed SuperSU included in TWRP / CWM.

[Q] Lollipop To CM12

So heres the problem i updated my phone to Lollipop; Motorola Stock version, now I plan and have full intentions to flash to CM12. The problem I'm not facing is finding a Lollipop compatible custom recovery which would help me flash to CM12. Oh and its a XT1033. All help is appreciated.

Thanks for the tip hope there won't be issues with screen flickering in this version of TWRP. I have no problem with the single/double sim as I'll be flashing Donkey Kang Kernel enabling me to get one SIM working which is more than enough for me.

I am not addict to custom roms but if you need anything from an owner of a rooted H955 v15c just mention it.
By the way, are you planning custom rom for all models?
yea good luck with locked bootloader.
If you need anything with a rooted 15e (latest lollipop version) image, I can help. Also, how are you going to flash a ROM with the bootloader locked in marshmallow, since bootloader locked in mm = no root and no flashing ROMs? But still very good initiative, I'll look forward to see your progress on the ROM. Nice idea C:
We will give you all our support~
i will try to root mm first
Do it, do it now

Flashfire may work at least backing up all partitions.
I believe it still needs a custom recovery to flash but I haven't gotten my device yet. Will be here in a few days.

A few questions

Hey guys! So I have a few questions about the oneplus one here, I'm checking for a friend and I always had a nexus where matching firmware doesn't really matter much. So here they are.
1) What happens if you have the wrong firmware for a rom? Softbrick? Hardbrick? Nothing at all?
2) For a Nougat rom, what firmware do you use? Since this phone hasn't got an official firmware update for Nougat yet.
3) Is there a special recovery here on XDA that can flash all roms? (there was one for the oneplus two) or is TWRP good for all roms?
What confuses me the most about oneplus devices is how the firmware works different from most Android devices. Thanks guys!

Thanks! So it's not as important as it seems? I notice some roms here on XDA specifically say to have the newest firmware, or a certain version. The rom is still expected to boot? And what's the worst case scenario? A soft brick that can be easily fixed with TWRP or something worse? Thanks for the reply! Like I said, I'm coming from a Nexus 6 where none of this firmware stuff really applies

Thanks! So it's not as important as it seems? I notice some roms here on XDA specifically say to have the newest firmware, or a certain version. The rom is still expected to boot? And what's the worst case scenario? A soft brick that can be easily fixed with TWRP or something worse? Thanks for the reply! Yes the rom is a still expected to boot, though, the recommended frimware is to be used so as to avoid any bugs.
However, some roms do require the recommended frimware in order to boot but I don't think even if flash any rom which needs recommended frimware will take you in any kind of brick condition as when you flash a rom on incompatible frimware you'll see error in Twrp,if so happens you just need to have recommended frimware in your storage and flash it then flash the rom again and you'll not face any errors.
Good luck!

1. If you are using TWRP, nothing will happens. Because when you flash a ROM, TWRP will comparing your phone model with build.prop on the targeted ROM. Because based on my experience, somehow i download LineageOS for d802 and flash it to my bacon. TWRP gives an error and didn't flash any firmware. I don't know about CWM or other recovery
2. I'm using Lineage OS. It's pretty good so far. No bug or whatever
3. TWRP is good for all ROM. i think any recovery will do
