[Q] LG G2, G4 and Nexus5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I am planning to buy a smart phone. I have seen the models: Nexus5, LG G2 and LG G4 in a nearby shop.
I have the following questions:
Is it possible for LG G2 (and G4) to receive updates from google instantly, like Nexus 5 ? (The shop people said that it is possible)
Is LG G2 comes with stock android ?
Please advice. Thanks.

Anything is "possible" but only the Nexus 5 receives updates directly from Google from your list. And it won't be instant. It will be an incremental rollout.

Let's be clear on the terminology. I'm not aware of a phone that comes with stock Android (AOSP).

you'd also have to consider carrier branding, if your G2 or G4 are (for example) ATT, then the releases would have to go through ATT for approval before they are pushed to your phone. Nexus is google so they are directly rolled out incrementally to the nexus line (no carrier involvement)

G2 and G4 will never get update from google. The android on G2 and G4 are heavily modifed and reskined it is nothing like the stock android on nexus phones. Also if you buy G2 or G4 depening on the phone's origin (fron europe, from usa, from russia, branded phone like att, vodafone, orange, telenor etc) you may get updates with a huge delay or you may never get update.

Might as well get the g4

LG branded device does not use stock Android, and will not receive quick updates from Google instead it will rely on your carrier for updates like most non-Nexus devices.
LG G2 already stopped receiving updates and in some countries (such as Canada) they will not even release Android 5, it is stuck on Kit Kat.
Nexus 5 will receive Android M in about 6 months, but that may be its last major update.

Thanks for your reply. I would like to buy Nexus6. Is there a good Customer Support and Service (Repair) for Motorola in India ? I heard that the Support is poor (or no support) for Motorola in India.

Nope, it won't be its last major update, look at nexus 4!, pretty sure that N4 gonna get M, and N5 will be updated a few more times. Furthermore, did you see how many updates got N10?

That's according to Google, though they could always change their mind down the road.

Wait 4 or 5 months for the Nexus 5 2015.

I've just got a nexus 5 for a while until the mk2 version is released

speculation - how tough will root for g3 be?

I'm a tmo user and won't be switching carriers and currently have a nexus 5. I c considered the g2 but decided against it due to the issues with root and kit Kat. I know it isn't even announced yet but how tough d do you think the T-Mobile version of the g3 will be to root? Assuming it's available in june or July, I'm going to give it another month or two before I'd upgrade to give the accessories and devs time to do their thing.
If the trend continues probably pretty hard. All of the newest Lg devices on T-Mobile and Metro running kitkat, excluding the Flex I think, have stock recovery blocked...

Whe're my Lollipop update!? Cricket Wireless

Don't mind my typo in the typo, I don't know what happened there.
I have the LG G2 D800 variant, as well the Samsung Galaxy Alpha SM-G850A. Both of these phones are AT&T branded, and both have had Lollipop released for them on April 14th 2015 (5 days ago).
However, when I check for updates on both phones I'm told my software is up to date. I'm on Wi-Fi with a 60% charge.

For the LG, follow this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-g2/general/update-to-stock-lolipop-d80030f-root-t3084081
For the Samsung, I do not know
An official update was released 5 days ago, this is a stock phone. When I check for an update the phone tells me no update available.
Do you have an At&t sim. If yes then the update must be available if no then you have to follow the process in the link the guy gave

Anyone here have a PIxel Phone in Canada?

Does your Carrier get in the way of receiving updates, I've had a Nexus 5X and a Pixel 2 before and as far as i remember the carriers Virgin Mobile and Bell never got in the was of updates. Then again i did used to flash updates sometimes so idk maybe they did? Anyway i have the Essential Phone from Koodo and i never got the July Security patch also i still never got Android 9.0 according to to Essential Sprint? and Telus do further testing before releasing updates. I contacted Koodo and they said they do testing on Pixel and Essential updates So i want to know if anyone has a Pixel phone with a carrier in Canada, Do the carriers delay and test updates on them? I wanna get a Pixel 3 but not from koodo if i gotta wait a month or more for updates. Oh and i was told and read many people take out the Koodo sim cards and slap in a different carrier sim card and thats how they've been downloading the 9.0 update on Essential from Koodo.:silly:
I have pixel 2 on Koodo, I got the Android 9 update the day it was released.. I've had multiple Nexus, pixel devices and never once missed or was late with an update.

Telstra V50

I bought a V50 here in the UK that was originally sold by the Australian network Telstra, The phone works fine but I didn't know before I bought it that Telstra V50's have not yet been updated to Android 10.
Is it at all possible to change the firmware so I can get Android 10 quicker ? Not changed any firmware before but if someone has a idiot's guide lol
Thanks
No...
Same boat over here in Oz...
Thanks for the reply, That's a shame the phone is nice but I am a bit concerned about the security updates are still saying October 2019.
Might have to sell and go for a S20 instead.
S20 is trash. Compared to this phone

Says someone ho has the benefit of being upgraded..
Seriously, still on Android 9 and security patch is October 2019...
No Android 10 in sight and LG passing the buck back to Google saying they haven't released the OTA to us here in Australia yet.
Hardware might be good but the software support is straight down the toilet. Honestly, this was supposed to be a flagship device, I've had $200 phones with better support, LG should be ashamed...
Android 10 has FINALLY been released for Australian V50's...

Question Who controls updates for carrier Pixels

So I know that carrier versions of the Pixels have locked bootloaders. That doesn't really bother me anymore as i haven't rooted my phone in awhile.
However, I remember that before (Pixel 2 3 4 5 days) if you had a Pixel from the carrier vs a Unlocked one directly from google. After Google released an update (mainly an OS update) it would first have to be approved by the carrier somtimes significantly delaying the update vs people who had one straight from google got the updates right away. Is this still the case or do all pixels get the update when google releases it.
Thinking of doing the ATT trade in promo to get the Pixel 7 pro for free but delayed updates would turn me off the offer.

I have had the T-Mobile variant of the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, and now the 7 Pro and all of my updates have come from directly from Google.
It may vary with other carriers.

Probably. In January the VZW was dropped wit the Google and in Feb it was the T-Mobile that dropped at the same time
Pixel 7 Pro on AT&T here. I haven't noticed any delays in Android updates. They seem to be coming straight from Google.
