[Q] Weird contact list problem. - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my little boy (2y) sometimes grabs my phone and does random things. No big deal if he messes something up its usually easy to fix and my understanding of most non-developer things Android is pretty good.
Unfortunately I recently started having this weird problem and I'm not even sure if it was him: My wife (and some others) are no longer in my list of "All contacts". I double and triple and quadruple checked that all contacts are to be shown. I even tried enabling "custom" and then selecting everything. The thing is, the contact card is there and fully intact and usable in Favorites and when I search for it. But it is not in the list. I even deleted the one that was still there in favorites and re-added it and it's STILL not showing up. I changed the sorting order, made sure I chose first name last name in the right fields, went through the entire list regardless but it just doesn't show up. The real problem this brings is that things interacting with the contact list like some other apps or voice dialing in the car simply won't find this "missing" contact.
I'm currently on Oxygen OS but I also noticed the contact missing in the google contacts preview online. It's there in starred, not in the actual list though. -.-
Out of ideas here. Anyone got one?

So it is missing in your contact list AND on internet?
Also have you tried basic things like cache wiping and sh*t?
Maybe this is a specific bug introduced by OxOS? I hope not though... because if it is the case, you'll have to wait for a fix

Ok so thanks for such an obvious tip I missed. Clearing cache helped somewhat with also re-adding the contact again. So in terms of interactions etc it should be fine now but the sorting is still utterly screwed up. My wife's initials are B. V. D. (I used her full name, first, middle, last in the correct fields) and she is sorted under M now matter how I sort....

Haha I really did not think it would work but I'm glad it did!

Asurion Mobile AddressBook for Android

Hello XDA,
I am one of the developers of the Asurion Mobile AddressBook and I would like to get some feedback on our product from the users here. I have been using this forum for some thine now for Winmo and respect the opinions of the developers here. It would be great to see what everyone thinks of the application. It is available in the Android Marketplace, just search Asurion. Or you can go to our site at http://www.getaddressbook.com/.
A little about AddressBook, it is a socially connected address book that allows you to get information about your contacts from different social sites like Facebook and Twitter right in the address book, through mini programs called Mixins.
Soon we will have an APK for developers to develop their own Mixins for AddressBook. When its ready I will post more information if anyone would like to beta for us.
AddressBook is still in a beta form and is available for 1.6 and 2.0 and above. Please try it out and let me know what you think. AddressBook is new and we are open to positive and negative feedback.
Thanks,
Peter
Just installed
Main app + all MixIn
It's a nice app, just a bit slow on my HTC Sapphire Magic Vodafone 32B with 2.1 Eclair Rom
I don't like "MixIn solution", why not a full app with all modules inside ?
I've launched main app, then I gone to market and installed Facebook MixIn for first.
After a lot of privacy authorization with some screen not well fitted I did a little war with Matching People, cause a lot of them were not matched nice.
I need Photos compare, cause I've some cases with two or more people with the exact name... like my cousins =)
I had some Facebook MixIn Force close Crashes and some com.google.process.gapps crashes too, right now...
I installed flickr and associate it with some of my contacts and no problems at all.
at last I tried Twitter and no probs with it...
I think it's a good app, but a bit slow...
last thing:
Support for all languages (I could translate it in Italian if you need)
I don't like number in this format 000-000-0000
or 00-000-0000
I know it's a developing app and I will wait for next releases of this.
Well Done
Good Job
This is some great feedback, thanks for taking the time to try it out and post back.
Just wondering
Is this ultimately going to be a paid application?
You know like:
5.99/mo
4.79/mo
1.99/mo
What's our deductible? :0
Haven't tried the app, but if you could spread the QR codes apart it will ease their reading.
Thanks for your app!
played with it 30mins.
1. got the main app
2. started a new a/c in www.getaddressbook.com
3. got the MixIn: Facebook
4. start the MixIn app, input Facebook a/c
5. click Allow buttons 3 times
6. MixIn starts to get contacts from FB
7. Auto Match
8. Manual adjust Auto Match results
9. Launch main app
The above steps took about 25mins (330 FB contacts; 300 gmail contacts; Auto Matched 180; manual picked out... haven't counted >_< i believe picked out 30 - 50).
Cool:
-Auto Match tried to best match FB | Local contacts even they are not perfect match.
e.g. Shirley Lam | Salei Lam (it matches)
-Facebook photos can replace local as well as sync. to Gmail Contacts
-Consolidated activities log (SMS, voice call, etc) for individual contact
Not:
-[MixIn: FB] Say you have some contacts named Peter Chan, you will get confused without some other hints like Organization.
I picked those contacts out in Auto Match to prevent mis-matching as Org is not displayed in Auto Match results
-[main app] Contact list won't remember the last viewed location.
I scrolled from top to Carol, click twice to view details, click Return and the contact list scrolls back to top.
-[main app] Slow. Maybe it's my outdated HTC Magic... (it's CyanogenMod 4.2.13 w/ EBI1 mod]
For me:
Keep and waiting for updates!
looks cool..will try this later when i get home for work..
speed is defiantely something that can be worked on.

No, the application will be free. And no deductible that I know of
It looks interesting but what you should definitely not miss is the T9 dialer. The way you can find contact by typing their name directly from the dialer is the only feature that makes me stay on 1.5. I tried other apps from the Market but nothing could match HTC's Sense UI dialer. If you can bring something clean similar to this I'm sold!
Another question for the community. Are there any features you are not seeing in the AddressBook that you would like to see, things that would make this app a must have?
Great work on the app. After using the app for a few days the main reason I stopped us using it was the user interface. Its not horrible but compared to everything else on the phone, it looks a bit outdated (quality wise). Other then the ui, it can be sluggish at times but nice work.

Darvo is absolutely correct. The T9 dialer is something that is sorely missing from most builds. I think it would especially appeal to stock users as well as those running cooked roms. I have been searching for a reliable answer to this outside of a Sense UI but haven't found anything that I'll stand by 100%.
Thank you .........
I appreciate your effort with AddressBook; however:
I find it extremely inappropriate and invasive that the app immediately syncs my contacts upon install to -- where? your servers?
There should be a clear warning that this is about to happen!
Please delete my data from your servers!
Also, the 'delete all' function on your site does not work, at least not with Safari. I 'moved' all to the 'delete' column on right, but clicking on 'delete selected' does nothing.
And with Chrome I couldn't even log in. Got some error about 'src' and try the support page.
I am sorry that app is frustrating you. There is a screen during setup that lets you know about the backup. This function can be turned off in the app. If you give me your user name I will delete your account from the database. The back up is meant to protect your contacts in the case that you loose your phone or get a new one. As for browser support, right now we are only supporting IE and Firefox. Again sorry the app is frustrating for you.
Great app!
I really like and appreciate this app. The 2 biggest features that drew me to waste countless hours playing w/ hero roms on my mytouch were hero's T9 dialer, and the social integration. I'll 3rd the motion for a T9 dialer in your app. No complaints otherwise. Bravo - and thanks for the great app.
P.S. Backup to server is a bit redundant in my opinion, because your contacts already sync w/ your Google acct - but, to each is own. I might be missing an advantage to it anyway. I just opted not to use it.
And props for soliciting feedback here in the forum - where the REAL users are.

Really? Because I can see in the options where to change the time and frequency of the sync, but I don't see how to disable syncing altogether. Maybe I'm just missing something?
Good catch, looks like there is a bug, you should be able to set it to not backup. We will work to get that fix in.
I have been playing around with the Hero, but I am not sure I have found the T9 dialer, what does it do?
Feedback
I've been following this app since it first arrived, and I must say bravo for doing what only HTC dared to attempt. It works well, too, except for a few things.
1. It may SEEM that scrolling smoothness isn't that important. Ask Apple, they'll tell you the truth: Its the only thing the masses give a Sh&% about, how something looks. So imitate the apple or hero contact style, because the one here is rough but needs only an easy fix! Smooth scrolling and better "sleek" colors. Same for the dialer.
2. It seems to run too often in the background, which slows my phone seemingly, no matter how often i taskiller it.
Eagerly awaiting the next release...

The Missing Sync by Mark Space - Will this fix notes bug?

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone here has used "The Missing Sync" by Mark Space on their Android Phone, and if so how do you find it?
in particular I'm interested to know if your contacts notes will sync properly. (Default HTC Sync cuts off after 1024 characters, truncating what goes to the phone, and then on subsequential syncs puts it back into Outlook, thus deleting the end parts of long Notes in the contacts list).
I was hoping that maybe The Missing Sync would fix this?
Cheers
Adza
1024 Characters
Hello,
The Mark/Space engineering and development teams are aware of this issue, and are looking at whether the issue is, in any way, related to hardware or device-specific constraints.
Currently, there does appear to be a limit with regard to the number of characters (as you've noted). The Missing Sync software _does_ sync the entire note, but the device cuts-off the text (except in edit mode).
Hope that helps.
-rick
Hi Rick,
Thanks for your reply. I'm currently looking for a solution to this, but looks like there's not one available at this point in time. (Short of moving to another O/S).
Thanks for your reply.
Adam.
The Missing Sync: update
Hello, our testing shows that while the device may not properly or fully display all the info, the data is unaffected, and remains intact and complete, even following a subsequent sync (back to the computer, from the device).
In fact, if you open a 'contact' in EDIT mode, you'll see all the notes/data.
Bottom line: To simplify, the 'preview' mode available on the device limits the display, but the integrity of the data is unaffected.
Make sense?

Stay away from it.
If it costs $20, then IMO it's acceptable.
But it costs $40, which is absurd considering the instabilities and lack of functionalities.
Granted, some of the problems are because of the underlying Google codes/apps. Maybe they'll correct them in future, but maybe not, who knows.
Give it a trial before giving them your credit card number.
Doesn't appear as though they offer a trial version.
I also haven't been able to find anything about a guarantee.
I've been reading up as I would purchase this if I knew it was going to do the job for me without problems, but a number of users have reported having issues and not being able to get a refund.
With the reviews I've seen, plus the fact I can't try or get a refund - I'm not keen on parting with the amount they're asking for at this point in time.
See if it works without entering a code... Doubtful through...
http://www.markspace.com/downloads.html
Again, given their track record (user ratings) (http://www.cyrket.com/search?market=android&account=Mark/Space,+Inc.) It's better to stay away from it, for now.
And do check our their forums...
http://forums.markspace.com/viewforum.php?f=34
Going off of their looong tradition of helping phones sync with macs, I tried out Missing Sync, hoping for the solution to my syncing woes.
It's... okay. As a piece of software that is multi-platform, it's understandable that you won't see some of the polish that comes with apps made specifically with Android in mind. If you've ever used BitPim before, think of Missing Sync as the lite, user-friendly version of BitPim.
My main gripe is that it prefers to use it's own tools/organization rather than the standard ones on Android. This is especially true with Notes & Calendar, which require separate apps made by the developer (I didn't try these out). Since google already owns my life (and I use SMS Backup+ to archive SMS in gmail), I found that I had more syncs turned off than on.
That was ok for me though, because the main reason I tried it was for iTunes syncing. I've tried to love doubleTwist, but it's just too slow & buggy. While Missing Sync's iTunes syncing was faster overall, it still didn't offer the syncing experience that I desired. In the end, it just wasn't worth the overhead.
While Missing Sync software can be absolutely wonderful for locked down, non-smartphones, in this day of "the cloud", it's syncing model is starting to show it's age. I'd recommend a different solution.

My Apps missing apps?

This morning, went to market->My Apps on my Xoom, and it's only showing about half of my apps. No apparent pattern to what is missing (and I can see that market still has them, just its not seeing them associated with my account.) It was fine yesterday, and no updates on my end.
Anyone else seeing this?

When you scroll down your list in MyApps, do you see a list of uninstalled apps after the installed apps? If not, look at the menu (the 4 stacked up lines in upper right hand corner) and click on purchase history. That should have all the apps you've downloaded and you should be able to reinstall the missing ones, unless Google Market thinks they are no longer compatible with your Xoom.

No, they aren't listing as uninstalled, not listing at all. Purchase history on the market.android.com web site is showing them, with install completed. So far, I think I've only seen free apps missing, but need to check more closely. But it's not all free apps, some remain.
Ok, one new data point. My market account is shared between my Xoom and my Photon. Just checked on the Photon and it is still showing apps in my apps that are not showing up on the Xoom (like Adobe Flash.) Very strange...

A simple reboot should solve the problem. It has happened to me a few times at random, but not as of lately. Not sure if the market runs into some issues or the system itself, but after a reboot everything should pop up and be just fine. It always did for me when I had this issue.

Rebooted, no change. Dug further, I'm only seeing paid apps, plus Google Maps and Videos in the list. But if I go in market to one of the other apps (for instance, Kindle), the market page offers open/manage, not install, so at that level it knows I have downloaded/installed the app.
Sent off a "Contact Us" to Google.
eric
Response from Google yesterday asked me to remove updates to Market. Problem was, I haven't received any updates to Market. So latest is that this is a problem they've seen in some other cases, no current fix, but a "specialist" will be getting in touch with me. No further followup today.
eric
Two days, two nags on the support email, no contact from the "specialist".
Found an app that I had installed that wasn't showing up had an update. Navigated to the app in market, and it showed update. Did the update. As the update finished, the app flickered into the My Apps list for about 2 seconds, then disappeared out of the list.
eric
Well, nagged Google again today, at least for a hint of when there might be a fix. Did get a response - basically we know there is a problem, we have no estimate for a workaround or a fix.

Here's what I would try if I were you:
1. Go to the options, applications, manage applications, all, and then scroll down and click the Market. Since you are having major issues it sounds like, I would recommend that you just hit clear data for the Market app. Maybe restart before you open the market again. See if that helps at all.
2. Just out of curiosity I would install the latest market update that was released for phones. I would see if the problem was still persistent there in the new market app. This market was intended for phones at the moment, but it looks like it will support tablets soon. It seems to fit pretty well on the Xoom. If all goes well, maybe you can stick with that one for a bit.
Here you can find the most recent apk for the market that was released for the phones some days ago: Android Market 3.1.3
That's really the only advice I can think of. If you were rooted you would wipe data, caches, and dalvik cache to start a fresh new install to see if that changes anything. On technical speaking terms: there really is not much else you can do if this all does not work for you. Never seen anyone experience this before.
Thanks for the suggestions. Just tried both, and neither made a difference. Actually, pretty surprised 2) didn't make at least something different about the problem. I'm starting to wonder if the problem is something on the server/account side...
Google says they have seen others with the problem and are working on it, guess I'll just have to wait them out.

Sounds like it's server sided to me, which is really odd. I suppose it is a very unknown problem that only a very select few people have run into. Like I said, I have never seen this issue before on the Xoom.
I tried my best to help, but it's beyond anything we can deal with personally. Google says that they are working on this problem, so just hang in there.
Yup, will have to wait for a Google fix. Thanks for the replies!
eric
I'm not sure if you fixed it yet but here goes. I had the same problem; more than half of my apps would not show up under the "My Apps" list, even though if I searched for them in the market I could still update/uninstall them. I also searched through the forums but none of the suggestions helped. I finally fixed it tonight. Here's what I did:
(Oh yeah, you'll need Titanium Backup to be able to use the Market Doctor)
First I went to Settings->Applications->Manage Applications.
Selected the Market. Cleared cache, data, and uninstall updates.
Then immediately (I suggest you have it ready as a background app) I opened Titanium Backup and ran the Market Doctor. The reason i say 'immediately' is because the Market will re-update itself fairly fast so you have to get it done before it does so since I believe the Market Doctor does not work with the new Market.
That was pretty much it. When I opened the Market I saw that all my apps actually showed up in the My Apps list even after the Market updated itself. Hope it works for you.
I think you need to be rooted to use Titanium Backup, don't you? I'm running stock.
Nope, no more followup from Google at all. And now, even if I manually go to the market entry for an app, it won't always show me the "update" button, even though there is an update available.
eric
3 business weeks in, no fix, no workaround, not even an update email that they are still working on it. Google has a lot of customer support ground to cover to be a consumer company, and for now (3 weeks) I can't update my apps.
eric
Still getting the runaround from the Google Android Market Team. "At this time, I'm unable to provide a timeline for resolution, though I can assure you that we're aware of the issue and actively investigating. Thank you for your patience!" every time I nag them for the last 4 weeks. No request for more data from me, debug/logging version to run, etc.
So Monday I asked to have the case transfered to the manager. Get a new email, from "Richard" (no last name, same email address as the prior support member) saying the case had been transferred to him, and saying exactly the same text. Replied asking if there was anything I could provide to help, no response in now two days.
Looks like Google still hasn't learned anything about customer support. Can't wait to see how they do with Moto if the deal goes through...
eric
So "Richard" wrote back, explaining that they all use the same email address, and carefully avoiding answering my question about his role, i.e. was he really a supervisor/manager.
He told me that they have identified the source of the problem, so don't need any further information from me. No, there is not a fix available of any kind, and he doesn't know when there will be one. No, there is no work around other than calling up each app individually in Market and seeing if there is an update (not very practical for my large number of apps.)
At this point, I'm tired of beating a dead horse. I know we aren't Google's customers, we're their product, but they still have to learn to take user satisfaction seriously.

Not sure what to say at this point. If it was more widespread it would have been fixed right away. But, if it appears that they have now identified the problem, the coders will resolve it within days from now.
My final suggestion is to make a new email account altogether and try that. See if it still is the same problem. If so: It is your device, not Google.

It's not the device, because the problem is also replicated on the web site. Also, remember the Xoom is the reference device for Honeycomb (and I'm running stock), so still a Google issue if it is Xoom specific.
Given it's been a month and they haven't been interested in getting any further data from me, I'm not overly optimistic that it will be fixed in the next few days, but I'd love to be proved wrong.

Oh I hear ya man. I'm just not sure what else to tell ya, sorry man.
Keep crossing your fingers and hoping for the best. You've done your part as a customer by contacting them and letting them know the problem, and they seemed to have identified the issue now. So I'd say you're in better shape than you previously were at the beginning.

[Q] Add an extra person to existing group SMS Hangout?

I setup and sent some SMS to a group of contacts. I have realised that I need to add an extra person to the group. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to accomplish this. Searched extensively already: the only thing I've found reference to is an 'Add Person' icon that does not display for me.
If I go into the Hangout, clicking on the list of names at the top serves to activate the < which takes me back to the main Hangouts list.
If I access the People and Options sub-menu it displays the current "People in this Hangout" but there is no option to add anyone new.
Any suggestions please?

Just came upon this doing a google search looking for the same thing.
As far as I can tell, it's not possible. Did you ever figure it out?
I can't comprehend how something made by google and being pushed so hard in Android is so user unfriendly. How is this not an option??

No, although I haven't tried in the updated versions of Hangouts, but I'm guessing if you're just posting here that it's still not working. I agree it seems like a basic function for something they have forced upon us.

Question about .apk modding - possible to have it erase a database value on launch?

Hey guys,
I'm not sure if this is the best subforum to ask in, but I figured if anybody knew it would be you guys on XDA-devs.
I have a slightly modified Facebook .apk - what I did was take the last version before they bastardized the newsfeed and got rid of "most recent" (it's version 8.something), then open it up and remove a bunch of permissions that I didn't want it having. I left in obvious ones like GPS for checking in, but removed the stuff like "prevent phone from sleeping", drawing over other apps and other really obnoxious things that you normally couldn't opt out of.
I use it on a daily basis. I also hate Messenger - not only because it's two apps instead of one, but because of that same aforementioned issue... the drawing over other apps and there was no way to TURN NOTIFICATIONS OFF ENTIRELY, only for up to an hour.
Anyway, Facebook v8 already has a messenger built in. It's absolutely pointless to use the standalone one. However, there's a value that keeps being generated by their end that I can't control - at least not yet!
What happens is the first time you open messenger after signing in, it says "Upgrade to Messenger? Your friends are using it!" and you can choose "Not now" or upgrade. It does this for a day or two and then eventually the "not now" option goes away and it refuses to let you see your messages without "upgrading" despite the fact the app obviously has the ability to do it just fine.
After some experimentation, I discovered the fix. There are two values that get written in prefs.db (it's /data/data/com.facebook.katana/databases/prefs.db - not sure why prefs.db since it's not really a preferences but I digress)
If you open that up in SQLite Browser, there are three tables... open up "preferences" and there are two values:
/config/force_messenger/first_shown_1
/config/force_messenger/last_shown_1
Then there's a binary timestamp stored in another column in that row.
If I simply delete both of those and restart the app, it works!
But this is a bit annoying to have to do every couple days. I already have my development options set to force-close an app when I long-press the back button, so I was hoping it were possible to put a line of code in the .apk somewhere that just wipes those values, if present, when the app starts. There's nothing I can do about their server sticking those in there, as obviously they want to force people to use Messenger. I CAN just delete the values, though.
At the very least, some script I could set to auto-run (like kill the app and edit the .db) would work too, but I'm going to be getting a new phone soon and want to use it unrooted if possible... so I figured having this done from within the app itself would be a better idea.
Thanks in advance!
