[Q] Phone boots only into recovery mode - HTC Sensation

The phone belongs to a friend.
So as the title says, the phone can only boot into recovery mode. The device has a custom recovery -- 4Ext recovery --
He got stuck in bootloop after he tried to flash a rom. He also tried to fix it and that's when he installed 4Ext.
I don't know if the bootloader is locked or unlocked, S-ON or S-OFF and also the USB Debugging might be off as well. He says that the combination for HBoot/bootloader/fastboot (it is the same thing) does not work. So he gets into that recovery every time the phone boots.
Those are the worst options. But maybe the phone is S-off because of that recovery installed. I'm just thinking... Can you flash a recovery with S-ON or with usb debugging off?
Anyway, please give me some ideas... I'm kinda begginer with HTC.
Sorry for my bad english. Any ideas on how to fix this?

you can flash a recovery while on S-ON too
but you can't with usb debugging off
so probably the usb debugging is on
probaly the device is on S-ON
try this
from 4ext:
format all partitions except sdcard
enable smartflash
flash the rom
see how it goes

I am going to try that once i have the phone. As I said, the phone belongs to a friend. Untill then, if anyone else has another ideas, please write them here.

if you want to go for stock you don't need any custom rom
just know your cid and firmware version
and bootloader must be locked(or relocked)

As I said, the phone only boots into recovery so first i need something to flash in that recovery mode. After i get rid of that recovery and i can acces home screen or more important fastboot, then i can flash a stock rom. I can't even check if the bootloader is locked or unlocked. Let's hope that USB Debbuging is ON.
What can i flash into recovery so i can get rid of it? Where is the smartflash option? Those are my questions for now.

And what do you recommend to flash with this recovery in order to get rid of it? I mean, i don't care if the recovery is still on the device but I want the phone to boot like it normally does.

What do you mean transfer big files when in recovery mode? You can only transfer files when the phone is operating normally. Are you s off?
im pretty sure i am cause i used Revolutionary to root it
Since you can access recovery:
1. Download a rom suitable for the firmware you flashed.
2. Download super wipe script from ARHD thread.
3. Place both on a freshly formatted SD card using a PC
4. Insert SD to phone and install super wipe followed by rom.

Take out sd card and use a card reader to load a rom. Which firmware did you flash? Through bootloader? If you flashed the ics firmware bundle, which one?

Since problem happened after you tried to s-off and you can't flash rom by recovery, i'm pretty sure that your phone is still s-on. You can try the method as following
1. Reboot into the bootloader and check whether phone is s-on. If it's not, or rather, it's s-off, congratulation to you because it's very easy now. You just need to install a third party recovery( i never try to flash a rom by stock recovery, but i recommend to use third party recovery to flash roms) and flash any rom you want except those which need firmware. If it's still s-on, what you need to do is login htcdev and unlock the bootloader
2.Download a rom which doesn't need firmware( Because i don't know how to cope with ICS stuff and i just know something about gingerbread rom. if you want to try ICS, then ignore my reply). Download a third party recovery. Extract the boot.img inside the rom to adb folder, and so do recovery.img.
3.Connect the phone to the computer, open command line and cd into adb folder, and go to fastboot mode. Type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" to install third party recovery. Type "fastboot flash boot boot.img" to flash boot.img
4.Reboot into recovery mode. Double wipe the phone, or you can try superwipe provided by mike1986. Then install the rom you download. After installation, reboot the phone. Now your phone should be ok.
PS: adb command usually works when your phone has booted into system. Although type adb command in recovery mode and get some response from the phone, actually it doesn't make any sense.
All in all, all you need to do is :unlock the bootloader by htcdev, flash recovery and boot, wipe and flash the rom, then ok

serious problem - bootloop, no way to detect phone with adb

Hello,
I need some expert help about my self-bricked sensation:
I was on stock android 4.0.3 with root, unlocked bootloader and s-on. One day I came up with idea of flashing CM 10.1. I have had already cwm touch 5.8.0.9 installed so i went there and flashed an zip with cm. A while after i realized that it was a mistake.
My device is stucked in bootloader, i can connect to usb with fastboot, however adb drivers dont recognize it and nothing appears after adb devices. I was trying to flash an 4ext recovery with s-on smart flash which could help me, but it only made my cwm dissapeared.
What can I do in that case? I have this 4ext recovery in zip on my sd, and by launching bootloader it isloading it, then parsing, and... nothing happens.
Please help me, I would like to have anything working
when you connect your device via usb from bootloader does it say fastboot usb on screen?
if yes then try again to install 4ext recovery using the fastboot command
also don't try to flash the zip which contains 4ext from bootloader because you are S-ON
that's why it failed
reply
Yes, I know about the s-on fail...
What do you mean writing about fastboot commands? How to use it?

[Q] Fastboot usb not working without debugging. HELP!!

Hello,
I have a TMOUS Sensation 4G which is S-ON and bootloader unlocked. I tried to install custom ROM without flashing boot.img through fastboot and adb. I forgot to flash boot.img. Now I am stuck in the bootloader. I am using TWRP recovery and whenever I get to fastboot and connect the phone to PC , it is not showing fastboot usb. Unfortunately, my debugging is OFF. Is there anyway I can enable the debugging from recovery or fastboot. First I thought it was my PC issue as I am using win 8 USB 3. I solved the windows 8 USB 3.0 port problem from other site but still not working. I installed HTC sync too. Is it required to enable debugging to get fastboot usb? Please help. Thanks in advance.
Wait, you're flashing a custom ROM, why do you need to flash a boot.IMG?
And, I don't think it's possible to enable USB debugging from recovery/fast boot.
If you need to enable USB debugging, you need to boot the phone, then go to developer settings and enable USB debugging...

I had a sensation before which was also S-ON. I had to flash boot.img to install custom rom for that too. As I did not flash it, the phone was stuck in bootloader same as my new one. I managed to boot into one ROM which is MIUI JB, but it is stuck on "Unfortunately android has stopped" screen and do not allow me to get into the home screen.
First, do a full wipe if you're changing ROMs, second, wipe dalvik+cache if you're just updating a ROM, third, you need to enable smartflash in 4EXT recovery tools of you're s-on

Thanx man. I did all before flashing any rom. I do not have 4 ext recovery. I have twrp recovery. Also need to know how to flash 4ext as a zip file over twrp. Most of the custom rom thread recommends 4ext. As I do not have access to fastboot, so can not flash the recovery.img trough fastboot. I have been using custom ROMs in different devices for couple of years, but never stuck in this kind of problem. I flashed more than seven custom roms but in vein.

What does bootloader say when you connect to PC?
If it says HBOOT them press power button once.. If should take you to fastboot usb
Btw what you are doing is correct.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda premium
Do what ganeshp says, it will switch to fast boot mode if you press hboot with the power button.
Also, 4EXT is NOT flashed as a zip file in recovery mode, it is flashed in fast boot mode via command prompt on the PC.

Maybe a wrong kernel? I'm not sure do you need Smartflash enabled from recovery for flashing kernels. Try enabling it.
But if I were you I'd just flash the ARHD ROM which is exactly like stock ROM.

I think you should have downloaded the correct RUU.zip for you, and then taken the boot.img from there.
Would be a lot easier if you just flashed the ARHD!
& If you want to connect device; remove battery, hold vol down + power on to boot bootloader
from there select fastboot.
then it should say FASTBOOT USB

Turn off phone

Now you can access SD card. Put ARHD to it. Put SD card back to Sensation, reboot to recovery, enable smartflash and then install ARHD.

Maybe I misunderstood, but unlocking your bootloader wipes everything. You needed to get another rom to boot.
If you installed recovery, do
1. Enter recovery (hold power + vol down on startup, select recovery)
2. In 4ext, mount usb storage, get any Rom and put in your sdcard.
3. Enable smartflash, flash Rom.
Happy to help.

Help Needed - HTC Sensation Z715e

Firstly, I am very sorry if I have done wrong. But I couldnt just find help in other threads. I want to help a friend fix his Sensation XE Z715e. It stucks/reboots on the HTC BootScreen.
The device is Bootloader Unlocked but S-On. I read some thread and read about the RUU. I relocked the bootloader and ran the RUU. After the whole process... The RUU program said "Completed" but the device is still stuck / Reboots. Is there any other means? Please I would be glad to get early response as I am somewhere I can download any needed file now. I migth not get the chance tomorrow.
Attached is the "fastboot getvar all" details. Please help!
can you show me the detail of RUU that you've already installing..?, i mean..did you already try this RUU..?
if yes..but still stuck..
did you already tried (while your bootloader is still in unlocked state)...tried to installing a boot.img that are extracted from the last custom rom that you've using it..?
or if still stuck..did you already tried to installing a different custom recovery (ofcourse this is while your bootloader is in unlocked state too)...anyway what custom recovery do you had before..?, if before just using cwm..now just tried installing 4ext touch recovery..and after that you tried installing another custom rom...and don't forget to enable smartflash future from 4ext recovery before installing another custom rom..
if still stuck...just tried flashing a boot.img manually from fastboot.. "fastboot flash boot boot.img"

i think there's something problem in emmc partition..but i don't know what's that exactly..
i think the best way to fix that..just brought your sensation to the HTC service center..or 3rd party service center that already had a riff box / jtag tools that can flashing your sensation emmc from the beginning..
Hi,
It seems that you were going along the correct lines with the RUU you were running.
My only suggestion would be to relock your bootloader and try it again.
If it still fails , then, as JJeamy suggests , an HTC center would be the next step.
