Hi everyone.
I rooted my Note Pro 12.2 (wifi) a while back and installed a basic rooted ROM, not CW12.
I honestly don't remember which ROM I flashed. I believe it was just a stock de-bloated ROM, and if it's the one I think it is, in the thread it says that ROM was faulty and dev has stopped for it. I see the kernel version and build in the "about" section under settings but I'm not sure if that number would tell me which ROM it is, or just the ROM and kernal that it was built on top of.
I basically wanted a stock style ROM with the ability to change things as I wanted. I'm still noticing a TON of lag. Scrolling on pages, loading apps, screen lag between touch and actual input of characters when using on screen keyboard, etc etc. I've frozen a bunch of bloatware and other things and it helped a little, but it's still pretty bad.
Audio latency with recording and MIDI apps is very bad, but I know that's improved with lollipop.
Aside from lag, it seems that GPS won't lock on no matter how long Iet it look for a signal (hard to tell if it's the ROM, but my Note 4 has found GPS very easily). Also, my Note 4 (unrooted and stock at this point) is waaaaay smoother and faster than this tablet. I realize we're talking about lollipop vs kitkat, and that the Note 4 version I have is the snapdragon one. But it still seems like performance should be better on this tablet.
So I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a good ROM for me to flash until lollipop comes out for the wifi version of this tablet. I want the stock multi-window functions (4 at a time plus floating windows), so CW12 is not an option. I want to use some of the Samsung apps like s note and Hancom office. I use the s-pen from time to time with the pen apps like write-on-screen.
The "rooted" features I want to access are turning off the camera sound (adding the switch to the settings menu in the camera app, not just replacing the sound file with a dummy file) Changing PPI of apps (xposed module) and full access read/write on micro SD cards and really important is the ability to add any app to the multi-window apps list and force orientation. I've been able to do all this with xposed modules.
Other than that, stock would be fine if it wasn't so laggy. The main reason I want to try another ROM is the lag. On screen keyboard has a lot of lag, but even my Logitech k810 bluetooth keyboard is laggy.
I'm also currently travelling and don't have a PC with me. So I'm hoping I can flash the ROM without ODIN, or perhaps I can use one of the ODIN-for-android type things on my Note 4 to flash a ROM to the Note Pro 12.2. Also I have the stock recovey, and would like suggestions on which recovery to use instead. Again, no computer with me to flash a new recovery. Ido have an OTG cable and USB flash drive so Ican back up my files before flashing the new ROM, as well as a miscro SD card.
Any recommendations for a smooth, fast ROM? Any tips on flashing it without a PC? I know I can copy the ZIP to the tablet and flash it from recovery...but it is the stock recovery...is this going to be sufficient?

The hyperdrive rom by sbreen (in the dev section) works great. Isnt there an internet cafe in the vicinity? Ask them for assistance flashing the beast. I love twrp. Good luck!
I tried to find an easy root apk thingy so you dont need a computer, couldnt find anything (but maybe kinguser or something like it will work)

I'm a little confused about why exactly but I see that in the forums from time to time. It's recommended for certain ROMs. I don't know if flashing the stock ROM updates some other firmware/hardware driver type stuff that's needed for the new kernal to work or what.

If its rooted you can install twrp without computer (see my link) use twrp manager fromthe play store for that
You only have to flash the custom rom
(Make sure you backup on an ext sd or something, then delete everything in twrp, install custom rom, restart and done) I also always backup the launcher settings, if you backup the apps with titanium restoring is very easy afterwards)

I'm already having trouble installing TWRP. I can't do it from the app, as my device isn't listed. I downloaded the zip file of the correct version of TWRP and tried to flash it using the stock recovery. But when I boot into recovery mode, it still just goes to the stock recovery. Then I downloaded and installed ROM manager from the play store and it shows TWRP as being installed, but whenever I boot into recovery I just get the stock recovery.
I'm back home now and I guess I'll just try to do all this with ODIN.
Is there any reason I can't just install the custom ROM using the stock recovery? That's what I did last time.
Ok So I got TWRP installed via ODIN then I used it to clean wipe and flash Hyperdrive ROM but gmail app won't even open, just crashes immediately, and it's one of the main apps I need so...probably gonna look for another ROM...or most likely gonna flash the stock ROM, unroot and sell the tablet and get a Dell Venue 11 Pro. Might wait till the end of July though, the supposed release date for lollipop on this device.

And if you want lollipop give cyanogen a try. I love it (but its a personal thing).
Ad make sure to read the Venue reviews, they are not very positive.

I wanted to try lollipop because I use it for music, and latency is much better with lollipop. My Note 4 is running lollipop and I get way better performance from MIDI keyboards and guitar amp modelling. I really like the multi window functions on the stock and hyperdrive ROMs though, 4 at once, floating, etc. I'm sure as soon as lollipop is officially out for this device, someone will release a rooted version.
Thanks for the tip on gmail, fortunately I read it before getting too deep and just reflashed without gmail it and then installed the gmail app as you suggested and it does work. There still seems to be a bit of delay when using the on screen keyboard, not as fast as I had hoped. But it's up and running.
I was considering the Dell after trying a bunch of different audio and video editing apps for android and realizing that I just need full photoshop, premiere, and Reaper with all my VST plugins, so I need windows. Perhaps Surface Pro is a better choice but I like the Venue's chassis better, fanless, rounded corners. Also new tablets might be coming out with Windows 10 so another reason to wait...
My laptop is great but it's really big and I like a touch interface for on screen mixers and instruments. So I figured a tablet PC might work best for me. But the problem is GUI scaling. with the Windows legacy apps like Premiere and Photoshop, the buttons and menus don't scale, and on an 11" 1080 display they are quite small.
Just wait for win 10 and while waiting fine tune your 12" beast did you try system tuner pro already? You should be able to get less latency from that.
(And did someone mention "buy a Mac" already?
I am surprised, because after testing dozen ROMs I found stock ROM fastest one. Just root and debloat it.
Not so any lag or problems, but with custom ROMS I had a lot of problems.

Indeed, cyanogen requires a lot of tuning (but its what I like about Android, I am more tinkering with it than actually using it I believe

I checked out system tuner pro (didn't buy it yet just read the description) What exactly would I adjust to get lower audio latency? Just clock the CPU higher? OR does it have audio-specific settings not mentioned in the description?

WHAAAAAAAT?!?!?!?!?!!? I've been checking sammobile EVERY day for the lost couple weeks waiting for this! OMG OMG I'm hoping I'll be able to use the Samsung Audio stuff with this, their DAW and amplitube and all that...plus I'll get Hancom office back...Thanks for the heads-up. I'm glad I've been using CM12.1 though So I can compare the experience.
Looking forward to the rooted version of stock lollipop making its way to xda as well! Now... to figure out the best way to back up my current installation...

I have a iconia A700 and i'm thinking about flashing it with cm10.1. I found some tutorials and it seems to be not too hard to perform.
But before i do it, i have some questions:
1) What backup tool do you suggest? I want to keep all my files, programs and progam settings!
2) Is CM10.1 running smooth and good / better than the stock rom?
3) Someone tested the tapped out simpsons game on cm10.1 on the a700? It does not work with stock rom (maybe because of the resolution). Is there any chance to change the resolution with cm10.1 or maybe the game works fine without any change of settings?
I believe it's taking too much time to wait for an official 4.2 release and i don't like all these Acer Apps. So can you recommend flashing with cynagonmod?
1. Titanium backup. Though you need root, it's the best back-up tool you can get.

3. I didn't try it. I think there is a way to change the resolution, though when you've installed the CM ROM, you should try to run it first. I thought I read about changing the resolution somewhere in the CM forum, but I'm not sure how to do it.
Yeah, Acer said it's going to be there, but it's releasing somewhere in the summer.
I can certainly recommend CM. I had to get used to the new navigation buttons place, but you'll get used to it too, I'm sure.
I really like the OTA feature in it. You can get updates right on your tablet without having to reflash or stuff. I'm not sure if it'll install future Android version updates, but I think it's possible (like Android 4.2.1).
This is the stock US KitKat ROM for The Galaxy Tab 3 7" Tablet. Finally found it after a bunch of hassle online, and figured I'd post it here to make things easier for everyone.
When I Odin'd this ROM, it actually upgraded my tablet, and left all my items installed (not guaranteeing this will work the same for everyone else).
Afterwards, I just Odin'd TWRP to reroot using Chainfire's SuperSU (no other Superuser would work) and called it good.
Caution: if you are using a custom ROM, this may not work without reflashing stock 4.1.2 since the 4.4.2 ROM appears to be an update, rather than a full ROM.
Rooted devices and custom kernels that are otherwise stock should be fine.
The cache, and if possible dalvik-cache should be cleared before flashing. Some of those files can sometimes interfere with upgrades.
It might be necessary to pinpoint apps that are force closing, uninstall and reinstall them. Some apps, particularly paid apps, store their data differently on KitKat, and will automatically fail as a result.
If that fails, it might be necessary to factory reset the device.

I've seen both devices referenced together quite regularly, implying that they use the same ROM.

First, thanks for this. I have the T210R. I tried using this and had the same result, it updated the tablet instead of loading a completely new version. I did however run into a problem...the tablet had many for closes and reboots to a point it was unusable and so I reverted back to my backup. Did you see this? Maybe I had a bad download?

I did not have this problem, but I didn't have much on my Tab either. (Some apps don't play well with KitKat upgrades.)
Torrents have multiple segmented hashchecks to make sure you get an uncorrupted download, but it might still be possible. I'm reasonably sure my file is OK since I've used it (can't speak for the non R file though).
Did you clear your cache, and if possible your dalvik cache? I've read that some of those files interfere with upgrades.
If you can pinpoint the apps that are force closing, uninstall and reinstall them. Some apps, particularly paid apps, store their data differently on KitKat, and will automatically fail as a result.
Other option would be to try a factory reset and see if that fixes it. (I understand not wanting to do that though.)
One more thing, if your ROM isn't stock, or stock rooted (custom kernel should be ok too), you may have to flash 4.2 before the 4.4 ROM will work on the device.

as stated i am having problems because my SM-T210 wifi only! and want to update to kitkat official release!

Just to triple check, by the above quote you mean that if my tablet is currently rooted, I should still be fine to flash this update correct? [obviously it would become non-rooted once flashed and I'd have to re-root it as you mentioned you rooted after installing]
Also, how much space does this take up?

That is correct. I was rooted running the Werewolf custom OC kernel. I still had my tablet upgrade without wiping, and one other user has reported back saying the same. But I can not promise upgrade as opposed to overwrite.
The flash file once extracted, is about 1.4 GB, I don't know sizes beyond that. It does not repartition the tablet however.

Well this is awesome, system won't mount and I don't have a backup. Samsung website does NOT have the stock firmware, and attempting to get it for another country just to get this to load so I can flash a ROM leaves me with having to download at 15kbs. I am in the process of selling this to someone for their kid... And there are ZERO seeders for these files. Lovely.

For some (unknown) reason, Odin3 nor JOdin3 doesn't seem to work for flashing my Samsung Galaxy Tab3 device. For that reason I tried Heimdall-Frontend, but to make that work you need to extract the content of a stock ROM first.
Anyways, it still didn't lead to get my device into factory reset yet.
But that's another story on which I still have not yet found the answers needed to get the device successfully back into factory reset.
My guess is that the 'system.img' file, of Android 4.4.2, successfully has been loaded from Heimdall-Frontend, yet by going into reboot right away after Heimdall-Frontend releases the connected device, the download may be deleted.
I read that the cause of that may lie in the fact that Android 4.4.2 is only an update and no full ROM.

Now, I really don't know anything about rooting or modding, but I just realized that my phone is starting to go slow, and there are some bloatwares I do not really use. I heard that if I root and mod my phone, all the bloatware can be erased and I will be able to have more space in my phone.
Can someone please link me or teach me how to root and mod my Samsung Galaxy S4? I've been reading around, but I am scared that the thread I am following is either out of date, or would not turn out well, so if you do have the time, please do help me!

Easiest way to root your phone is with Chainfire Autoroot.
Deleting system bloatware won't really free up space. The System partition is a set size, so while deleting some apps will free up space in that partition, it won't give you extra space for, say, games or photos or music or other non-system stuff. Any extra space will be minimal anyway. It's also dangerous to do if you don't know what you're doing. Read, read, and read.
If you install custom recovery, such as TWRP (easy to do on this phone after rooting), you can however flash custom ROMs. This includes ROMs like CyanogenMod that are based on stock Android, and also customized Samsung TouchWiz ROMs that have been modified and typically de-bloated like you wish to do with your phone. Omega and Hyperdrive are probably the most popular modified TouchWiz ROMs for the S4. Custom recovery is an essential life-saver for learning about root and ROMs, because it allows you to make an exact backup, so when you screw something up (and you will, we all do, it's all part of the learning process) all you have to do is restore the backup.
There's plenty of youtube videos that'll walk you through the processes, but the best thing to do is read, read, and read. Educate yourself not just so you know what to do, but why you're doing it.

First of all, I would like to thank you for your lengthy reply about my post. I really appreciate it a lot.
If I use the Chainfire Autoroot, it would do no harm with my files, am I right? (Well, I will of course back it up, but just to make sure!)
Next, what is custom recovery? Should I install this first before doing any mods?
I have heard about CyanogenMod (was thinking of modding my phone to it). What are TouchWiz ROMS though? Oh and other than CyanogenMod, are there any other mods that are nice to try out there? Would be nice to try something nice.

It's my understanding that as long as you're not using encryption, your data won't be wiped. But definitely back your stuff up first.

Recovery is sorta like the BIOS menu on a computer. The stock recovery on a Samsung gives you the options reboot, clear your data or cache, or do a factory reset. Custom recoveries allow you to flash things like ROMs, kernels, modem firmwares, as well as do full back-up and restores. The wiping options differentiate between storage and the ROM, so when flashing ROMs, you can choose not to wipe your data (music, pictures, etc). The most popular and easy to use custom recovery is Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP). There's an app you can download from the Play Store that will install it for you (and update) once you're rooted. A custom recovery is an indispensable tool for modding your phone, and fixing it when you screw something up. Read up on TWRP and its capabilities before doing anything drastic with it.

CyanogenMod is by far the most popular custom ROM. It's very close to stock (ie: Nexus) Android, with some very useful features added without bogging the phone down with tones of useless crap. Many other custom ROMs borrow from CM, many built upon it and borrow from other custom ROMs. Personally, I think there's better ROMs out there than CyanogenMod, but that's a personal preference, and CM is a good place to start for anybody venturing into custom ROMs.
TouchWiz is what Samsung calls their UI. It'll be the stock ROM on the device. As I mentioned, Omega and Hyperdrive are examples of customized TouchWiz ROMs. They're tweaked for performance, some useless/unwanted features removed (like KNOX), often they port over features from newer or more powerful Samsung devices; it's possible to get features from the Note series and the S5 and S6 on your older S4 this way. They can also add other UI tweaks like expanded reboot menus, audio mods, visual tweaks, etc. The main advantage for using a customized TouchWiz ROM is that it'll be familiar, yet greatly improved.
Apart from that, custom kernels are fun to play with too. I use Koontz kernel on my S4. The kernel, simplistically put, is a bit of software that tells the operating system (ROM) how to use the hardware. This includes everything from the screen and buttons and speakers to the CPU, GPU, and RAM. A custom kernel can give you options like overclocking, undervolting (to save battery), adding touch-wake options, screen calibration, etc. Koontz is a very adjustable kernel. Messing with kernel options can be very risky though, so do your research before making any changes (and do a back-up!)

Honestly, I'm not particularly knowledgeable about the S4; what I know is fairly basic and I'm relatively inexperienced with modifying this specific device. I got mine for $70, and after rooting and flashing TWRP, I tried a couple ROMs, found a custom kernel, and basically haven't really messed around with anything else for months. My S4 is not my primary device, that'd be my OnePlus One. Mainly I use the S4 as a mobile hotspot and to USB tether to my computer for home internet, since the battery is removable and I can use it for that purpose without ruining my OnePlus One (running a constant hotspot destroys batteries) .
Feel free to PM me, but it might be more prudent just to keep it public so anyone searching for the same answers can find them here, and if I can't answer them, someone else can. Right now though, it's bed time, then I'm off to work so don't think that I'm ignoring you if I don't answer in the next 20 hours or so.
Coming off of the Samsung S5 and going to the Honor 8 (Phone should be here tommorow)
On the samsung I had safestrap loaded for recovery, rooted, xposed, and many rooted apps.
I was also running stock rom because of lack of room, also lack of options.
The honor 8 looks like it is easy to get TWRP on it and get it unlocked bootloader.
Not sure about custom roms , looks like there are a few but is stock good ?
Also what about emui5 ?
Here is my current plan unless other suggestions:
Do titanium backup and nandroid on old phone.
Remove Sim and SD
Activate new phone with current sim (May need to go to att to trim)
Unlock Honor 8 bootloader.
Get TWRP loaded.
Root phone
load exposed , SU, Busy box, TB, (not in that order)
Load apps from Google play and overwrite data from TB if needed.
That is about it, so if I do this right should have stock rom and fully rooted and recovery.
currently looking at using Somboons tool for most of it.
This is a repost of my origional , but did in the wrong forums opps on my part.
I think before any mod on this device get used to the function of the unmodified device. And there after do your mods if you happy, unless you've already used this device.

I have just got my honor 8 and all my other phones have been rooted and using custom Roms.
With this and with the updates and beta N I'm finding that I don't have to.
Using this ROM and using the custom themes that are available it's enough to keep me happy.
I'm looking forward to 2 years worth of updates.
It's an excellent phone and I really like the EMUI 5
Think hard before you root etc. There ain't any finished custom roms as yet.
There is no need to root to get rid of bloatware as the Rom let's you delete most of what you don't want.
Why you need to root ?
Try the phone and see what you can do.

I root for many programs , titanium backup , es file explorer, APs toSD pro, xposed and some others.
On the same Samsung there was tons of junk on it.
I know if I go TWRP there isnt much use at the moment. Unless I need to sideload something.
Don't really need a custom rom, not yet at least.
Wondering if I root and keep the stock rom would be the best thing.
Can I load TWRP later ?
Heard it will break the EMUI 5 update.
Or I could always do TWRP , Root etc and then load EUMI 5 or custom version manually someday.

Yes mate you could root and keep the stock ROM but you will lose the option to get the OTA updates.
Just way up the pro's and cons and see if you really need to root.

Or is it possible to flash it or any custom coming out with it. ?
I seen there is a signup for beta now.
I do need root ( I dont save anything to the cloud services) all local
Apps themselves will load from play store and amazon store, just the game data or any other data will be manual reinstall.
From what I understand if I dont install custom recovery I can still get the OTA update when it is time.

When I got the beta N update it came as an OTA update although i do think that there are some links to getting it via twrp over in the roms thread. I might be wrong with that though. Have a look

I were also used to root on all my previous phones including the last one I moved from which was the Galaxy S4.
EMUI has so many nice functions (including choosing whether standard storage should be internal or external) so I actually don't need root anymore. Not even for blocking ads since that can be done through VPN.
If you want to move over your app date without root then do a backup with ADB.
Search for "adb backup" and you'll find a XDA thread about it. I made such a backup and got all my app data moved over along with the apps.
Oh yeah, and personally I'm using Evie for a launcher but when EMUI 5 is published I think I'll move back to the stock launcher.
Bro, the stock ROM rocks with its customisability!
And one more thing; if you're eligible to get an extra year of warranty plus 3 months of free screen change in case it cracks then remember to sign up through the HiCare app.
I'll also be getting my Honor 8 shortly. The only reason I've rooted my phones in the past is for ad blocking. I see there's an app called "Block This" that does not require root? Will that work on this phone?

I've used AdGuard and it's brilliant, but it's not free.
EDIT: I'm currently using "Block This!" and it's working very well!
I use root for some games, game guardian.
Some games are pay to win. ( I don't mind paying some but don't rob me)
I did get the phone working with my cell company and currently getting the Sd card backed up just in case something goes wrong somewhere.
Looking at getting a bootloader unlock code, but there site doesn't seem to be working right.

Read multiple tips and ideas.
Next step is get SD card installed and getting google account loaded up.
Well I installed everything, only thing I don't like so far is it forces apps like hangouts.
I know it was recommended that I do not to TWRP or root, but I did anyways. ( I took suggestions very serious Thank you)
Now trying to get used to setup is a little challanging, maybe playing around with it will help a lot.
Such as hard to find what actual apps I have like an app drawer.

Just got my H8 on monday (FRD-L14) and am in the same boat- thinking of Rooting but with the lack of ROM support at the moment I think I'm going to stay stock for a bit. There are some xposed mods that i'd like to get back but the stock features are pretty solid as it is. I did the CM theme, Apex launcher, changed out Icons and I'm pretty damn happy with it!

I have the same model now FRD-L14.
Recovery , rooted, SU, xposed, F-droid.
Loaded my 20 root apps
I did not see a way to root without loading recovery.
There is another thread on TWRP.
What my plan down the road is to keep it like this , then eventtually (I assume early next year) see some development from Roms etc.
Hopefully a modified EUMI 5.
One of the major reasons I did not wait to start the process is because when you unlock bootloader it wipes.
So doing this now I cna set the phone up how I like. Then when the updating begins I can always go back to nandroid backup if something goes wrong.
Even though ATM the TWRP isnt backing up my rom (will update recovery when it does).
Nice- so i assume all the current "how to's" work fine for the L14? I've been reluctant to meddle too much since our model isn't specifically mentioned in most of the post here (though i assume anything for L04 applies). That and I don't see a stock firmware package out there to go back to if something goes wrong. I'm not a total noob but have only rooted and ROM'd with samsung devices so far (GS 2 and 3) which are so well documented and tested you really can't screw it up.
I'm really conflicted. I want to root simply because of the option for backing up app data rooted. I could care less about custom ROMs right now, but I want to be able to back up the data inside my apps like all the settings, messages, accounts etc etc. It is really annoying to me that I have to reset that when switching phones. I hate to say it but it seems like Apple does this better with iTunes backups (which is not an option for me though because I don't want to pay the money for an iDevice).
My issue on the H8 though is I rooted it just fine but then realized I forgot to do OTA updates first. So I did the OTA updates (full download) which basically re-locked, re-stocked my bootloader and unrooted the phone. Now in order to re-root, I have to go through unlocking again which is going to wipe all the customizations I already did. I really wish there was a way to keep a stock image WITH root but continue to do OTA updates...

Can you recommend a stock based rom to the 3g p3100 version or a custom ROM? I try many roms but I have the same problem sometimes random restarts, lag in basic things like watching videos and opening the pic gallery it happen when open the settings too, I tryed now the Resurrection Remix latest security patch and cant watch videos looks a problem in codecs or something, to work I need reboot but the videos runs so slow and browsing too its impossible (Not using chrome or another browser downloaded from playstore, thank you.
All flash that I do is FULL WIPE System, Data and Storage 100% clean.
Don't expect to much. It's an old tablet.
Make a backup of your ROM and maybe check some 4.4 or 6.0 ROMs. If you're still not happy, go back to stock or it's time for a new Tablet.
