New N5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys
I just got my N5 and i'm so excited right now .I come from a galaxy nexus device and i wish if someone can recommend a good setup for my new phone.
I love stock android but really don't like that white color of lollipop. What do you guys think is the best combination in terms of stability and battery life at present?

Any 5.1.1 Rom should do you well, and there are some with dark themes I believe.

AICP is a great ROM. Based on CM with a bunch of nice added features from them and other ROMs as well. It's on 5.1.1_4 (I think), and because it's CM based, it has Theme Engine, allowing for almost a complete redesign with themes.

Is there any stable one with a good battere life and performances?

Flash the M dev preview and find a nice dark layer to use with it

[ROM] VanirAOSP [official] [nightlies] [4.4.4] organized, clean, fast.

Welcome to VanirAOSP. Our mission is to deliver a clean optimized version of Android with subtly improved versions of the features you love to as many devices as possible. we've tried to incorporate and improve our features in a way that makes them more cohesive to improve the overall user experience while correcting any performance regressions and improving functionality..
What to expect:
- This is not a McCopy ROM. What goes into our build is well thought-out and not a bunch of stuff duck taped together because we could.
- maximum optimization. We do our research. We test hard. We build -fstrict -O3 globally and include a massive array of code optimizations and memory leak fixes that we write ourselves and eventually submit to AOSP or Linaro.
- originality in our source. We generate a lot of new commits being features or general code improvements. We are open source to share and improve the community but we also try to make sure we offer a unique experience.
- aesthetics.. hopefully in your opinion
General features:
stock mode - ability revert to stock AOSP code with the exception of a few custom features we chose to keep active
enhanced performance.. longer uptime with less slowdown
custom written CRON and init.d.
UI and graphics improvements
custom navbar, navring, and hardware key features
halo (active display & lockscreen notifications are in review)
usability improvements like power reboot menu and sound
animation control
Improved Vanir keyboard
CM's profiles & quicksettings
additional quicksetting tiles
immersive mode
statusbar mods
clock & battery mods
lockscreen blur and other mods
soon to come -> quick cam and flash notifications
busybox, embedded root, init.d, cron etc
yatta yatta yatta
more to come when i feel like updating the op

you new to flashing custom ROMs?
every time you change ROMs you should factory reset. it will keep your sdcard contents. as far as saved games it probably depends on the developer that made the game but it should hang on to them.

i'll see if i can figure it out tomorrow. i've been meaning to get a nexus 4 build set up too i just don't have the device or know anybody that could test it for me.
So far, this with Bricked .58 seems to be rock solid and blazing fast. It's about time we got the 4.2.1 performing like 4.1.2.

that picture is the 4.1.2 version of my galaxy nexus rom that uses the same source. i no longer include the version # in the pulldown and i use the stock icons because of theme chooser. i didn't steer very var from AOSP to leave it up to the user to decide how they want the ROM to look.
also, it should be noted that instead of using a ROM control app like AOKP or most other ROMs i decided it was more intuitive to include the features in their respective menus ie sound options under the sound setting header rather than having them in both settings AND rom control. look around there are a lot of subtle additions. to turn on developer options click on the build in about phone 7 times. in there is the reboot menu toggle. i felt this was a good place since the developer options are disabled for non-owner users with multiuser. that way somebody's kids don't reboot into recovery and cause havoc lol.

in the eclipse thread. there's a bunch of inverted GAPPs out there. i'm having somebody put together an aroma installer for me right now that contains both regular and inverted gapps. pretty excited. also working on an inverted theme chooser theme to include with the ROM. options options!

Cool; thanks... The ROM is running really smooth already.

any AOSP roms in the works?

Not sure which section this would go in so sorry if it's the wrong one.
Loving the M8 to death probably the best phone I've ever owned other than my gnex but would love to see some AOSP roms. Don't really care for sense and would love more of a lightweight Rom like AOSP. I feel we would get better performance as far as speed and battery life as well.
So is anyone working on one? Or need any testers?
Do you think an AOSP Rom would be perfect for the M8?
The ROM section(s)? GPE edition comes out in 4 days, I'm sure there will be some ports relatively quickly after that.
There is a GPE port and CM11. They aren't perfect yet but you can run them. Aren't too hard to find if you look around.

Well I can't post in the Rom section and the way it sits gpe isn't a daily driver nor has it been updated since the first alpha release. Not a fan of cm but good to hear it's coming. Just tired of sense holding this phone back.
The GPE port works okay other than some lag and the camera is annoying but works. They were saying to look in those sections not post there. Once CM11 is working I'm sure we'll see more but for now those are the options.

I do not consider CM to be asop. GPE yes, which I hope gets updated to fix the camera and what not because I can't use a Rom with a non stable camera. And I've already checked the Rom section or I wouldn't 've posting asking just saying. I'll just sit back and wait for something which I'm sure is coming sooner than later. I may end up
Brewing an asop Rom myself. Thanks for the input though guys!
To be clear - when I say GPE, I'm referring to the actual phone (One M8 Google Play Edition, ships on the 9th), not the ROM posted in the Android development forum.
Also, I literally just picked up this phone about an hour ago, and while I'm a huge fan of "stock," HTC has done an incredible job with this release.

I definitely agree HTC stepped their game up with sense 6 and keeping it's bloatware to the minimum. That being said I still prefer straight stock asop for its speed and battery not to mention I hate clutter. Also congrats on the new m8 which I'm sure you'll love. I love mine too that's why I didn't wait for the gpe device.

OSE hasn't been updated since April so don't know what issues it has. Liquidsmooth 05/06 Nightly can be flashed via TWRP now but has these following bugs:
*No In call audio (they can't hear you & you can't hear them)
*Headphone jack still broken
*FFC is broken
*Low Resolution MMS Quality

Works:
Installs on TWRP now, headphone works (using it now), camera works. Wifi works. Regular calls through the phone itself work.

[Q] Custom ROM

So... I'm planning to switch to Nexus 5 because my current phone (xperia zl) is lost...
Can you guys suggest me a good custom rom? I mean lag-free (no lag when you pull down the notification drawer), and stable ?
Thanks a lot, sorry if i'm asking such as unimportant question, i'm new in here
Since AOSP is built for Nexus range, they're all about as lag free as each other and all pretty stable.
Just look for the features you want and try the roms...

But i've read on some website said that PA, Carbon, and Mahdi is laging.. .Is that true?
If they are, its users poor setup or certain apps. ?
Stock is noticeably faster than pacman cm based ROM no matter what my settings were.
Going to try a couple more aosp based Roms like rastakat for the missing features from stock.
Will definitely be sticking to aosp Roms now though and not bother with any cm based.

Cm has always been a battery drain for me since cm6. Its never been more stable than anything else. Maybe their final versions are as stable as everything else, but all their nightlies and everything else released between the final versions always seem to introduce bugs. And they always change stuff that doesn't need changing.
I will never use cm again. Simply awful.

read the xda threads on xda in general, q&a. many many times its cm thats unstable. besides, i spent years on cm, i know what it can be like. anyways, for the nexus 5, there are many roms that id consider more stable than cm.
First time trying a cm based ROM on my n5 and first time I have stability issues. Had to hard reboot cause it wouldn't wake up at all.

You lose some of the stock features like quick memo and slide aside, but I think it's worth it for the improved UI (cleaner/less cluttered) and performance. Double tap to wake and sleep still works. Cm also has better themes that can change boot animation, on screen buttons, etc.

Cataclysm Rom orphans thread

Since development on Cataclysm Rom has stopped I was wondering which roms Cataclysm Rom orphans are switching to ? I cant decide between Chroma and PureNexus
Chroma is great Pure NExus is also good. Give them both a go and pick one. I stuck with Chroma for a couple days and it was solid.
Maybe Atl4ntis will post his mod in some other way, when new source is out...
why you need to switch it now ?!
i have strong belief that Atl4ntis will come up with new mod when new factory image will arrive...he won't punish tons of loyal users just because of few morons ! :fingers-crossed:
so just have faith and wait ( if you don't have any other reason to switch the rom ,i personally don't find any reason to ditch cataclysm as of now )
what happened? Can you link me to the post, please?
I use the latest PureNexus ROM with ElementalX kernel. Very smooth and functional Android Experience. Battery is also not bad with about 5h Screen-On Time. (2G, WiFi, Messenger, Tapatalk, Feedly, Spotify)

It's a shame that on xda, developers gets so frustrated by the community to leave it every month. I would lock the thread as read only and just post links, to report bug there could be just a thread in general section

Well, cataclysm is most stable rom around.
CM nightlies are not really stable (nobody expects so), and other ROMs which are mashups of all commits "dev" managed to merge can't be stable.
does someone have tried to flash catalysm 5.jan mod to stock MMB29Q?
Such a shame Cataclysm has disappeared. I enjoyed using it when I tried it last year. Well, I'm on stock unrooted as always these days. I like custom ROMs and the idea behind it, but seamless updates and mostly stability sway me in the direction of stock.

yes you can use Jan 5 mod on 29Q.
Is anyone staying on Cataclysm or jumping ship?

Staying. Until android N. Or if there will be significant changes in between but I doubt there will be.

I too am a Cataclysm orphan. I came across this thread, and am surprised I didn't see a link to the thread linked below. It is a great initiative by @magnamentis and @ben_pyett to create a support thread for users who want to keep using Cataclysm and help each other.

CataclysmMOD can indeed be flashed over Google's February Stock images, and possible later monthly Google Stock images as well.
It is quite remarkable that a ROM with such a rich feature set and so many customizations, no to mention rock solid stability, has been reduced to such a tiny mod (just 13 files plus the kernel) which can be flashed over stock images!
