So I've been looking at all the various "lost phone" apps for Android.. it seems there are quite a number of viable options.
But one feature none of them seem to talk about is whether or not you can use the tracking tools from another mobile!
I'm usually out with my friends or family; if one of us lost our phone, it would be an incredible inconvenience to go home, get on the computer, and start trying to track down the phone then.
Do any of these apps have the ability to easily lock/wipe/track/etc. your phone from another phone? (I'm not referring to the SMS control of course, that's obvious. I mean like a Google Maps interface so I can easily track down the phone.)
Or, any of them whose websites work well enough from a mobile browser to fit this purpose?
Thanks!
Aiieee I thought I posted this in Q&A... Please don't hate me for screwing up my first post, haha...
Edit:
And I just noticed, this is in GENERAL General.. should be in Android Q&A. Derp derp..
How dare you post this over here. Lol. Welcome to the forums.
Avast Mobile Security can be controlled via a text from another phone. Also, if you install Dolphin browser HD and you switch to desktop view I dont see why you wouldn't be able to access the desktop version of websites.
I'm using Where's My Droid and you can use any messaging or smart phone to access your misplaced or lost phone. Texting the missing phone with preprogrammed phrases can ring the phone, return a Google Map location, or even wipe the phone's internal and SD memory. Another one I use is Mobile Recovery from Asurion which is the company that I have phone insurance with.

Check out cerberus. It is free for a week for testing and can be controlled from desktop or another phone. Does all you want. Search YouTube for "cerberus android". There is a great video that is 21:36 minutes or about that long.

Now that we have a root method via the weaksauce exploit, has anyone found a way to tether via WiFi on an unlimited data plan?
I haven't yet pulled the trigger on an M8. WiFi tether is a make or break for me.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WORKING METHOD #1 -- FULL HOTSPOT
Tethering App:
WiFi Tether router
Setup Steps:
1. Install WeakSauce root
2. Install Wi-Fi Tether Router
3. Launce Wi-Fi Tether Router with the following settings:
SSID=<user selected>
ecryption type=wp2-psk
WIFI Password=<user selected>
wifi channel = 11
interface=kept it at 'wlan0
method=hostapd
Known Issues:
This tool supports both Ad-Hoc and Infrastructure (Master) mode. Be sure to set to Master for best performance.

WORKING METHOD #2 -- NATIVE TETHER
Follow the steps outlined here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708548
I just added hotspot to my plan for $30. Did not effect unlimited data.
Sent from my HTC One M8 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Thanks, but I was more asking for a way to enable it without paying. I don't use it often enough to justify $30 a month, but when I need it, I REALLY need it.
To be clear, if I used it daily, or even weekly, I would happily pay. My use averages 3-4 times a year while business traveling where WiFi is sketchy or non-existant.

I want to make sure because if true, I will be getting an M8 this afternoon and donating to jcase.

can someone try this? i have an idea here... bear with me for a sec.
the tethering is blocked via a system setting. the settings are stored in sqlite databases.
can someone use the root sql view below to search for the setting?
acc to the link i posted, it is in Settings Storage, file "settings.db", table 'global', under the value name tether_dun_required
i just looked though my galaxy nexus (4.4.2) but i couldn't find it... possibly because i have a custom rom installed. the link says that this setting is used in stock android to block the carrier tether.
if it exists on the m8, then we can modify it.

3.3 appeared to install fine, after trying to enable got an error that there were errors and to check the log
tried checking the log, got a popup saying something along the lines of "what the hell?! your phone took control over wifi!"
After that there seemed to be a duel between android and the app, and I couldn't enable/disable wifi in the android settings, and couldn't force close wifi tether either
rebooted phone, uninstalled tether, installed the 3.4 experimental
Appeared to install properly, but got 0 down/up and nothing appeared in log and laptop did not see a wifi broadcast

Greetings, XDA Assist!
I want to know if there is a way to restrict internet access to an Android app *ONLY* when it is opened.
For e.g, if I want to hide my last seen on WhatsApp, I switch off my WiFi/Data, and open WhatsApp -> Reply to the messages -> Close Whatsapp -> Turn Data on.
Is there a way to restrict internet access to only certain apps when they're opened, and regain access when they're closed?
It would be of great help if you direct me toward a solution, maybe a Tasker profile?
P.S - Classic XDA Lurker. Lurking for two years. Joined recently. You guys are brilliant. Keep up the good work!
Thanks in advance!
Hi there!
Depending on root or not, there's different option available
In your situation, I'd personally use Greenify
Or some custom ROMs have App Ops built in. You can select permissions on a per app basis. I don't think its quite what you're after in this case.
See if Greenify suits your needs. Read about it in the opening post in the thread I linked. ?
Good luck!!
---------- Post added at 12:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:09 PM ----------
And no, I don't think your example is going to hide last seen. As soon as you read or post anything, I'm sure it'll make you last seen. No matter how you try to hide it. As soon as you do download or upload. .. It knows you were on. Nothing will change that.
---------- Post added at 12:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:13 PM ----------
Yes, I misunderstood your goal. You want the opposite of what I was thinking.
If the app is open and no data or WiFi...the app will not function while you use it.
If you don't want people seeing your presence on social apps....you'd have to not use them. Lol
Take care.

Thanks for the reply!
I'm aware of Greenify and my ROM does have App Ops.
I wanted to know how to automate it ONLY when you open the app.
Open Whatsapp -> App stops accessing internet (OR) WiFi/Data gets switched off. [Preferably former]
Close app -> Regains internet access.
Something similar.
I'm sorry, I searched Google and XDA....found nothing like what your after. Lots on keeping it off data when closed....but not open. Again....you can toggle airplane mode on, then open it and test your theory...but I doubt it will have your desired results.
Here's a tasker guide, you can check it out, or ask in the thread perhaps.

Okay, so at school on the Wi-Fi, I cannot log into Pandora, or Facebook. However, my friend on his droid can log in, as well as my other friend with her 4S. Now you need to access a portal to login to the Wi-Fi, but I logged onto my Wi-Fi on his Android and it is still unblocked even though on my Nexus 5 Pandora and Facebook is blocked. He logged into his Wi-Fi on my Nexus 5 and it's still blocked.
Why would only certain apps not work on my Nexus 5 on the WiFi but on their phones it still works? I'm really confused? Even if I login to the WiFi on my account on their phone it's still blocked...

You just solved your issue. Obviously your account has a restriction on it for accessing social sites, and their accounts don't. If you're blocked when using their phone, that's the only answer.
No one can help you here.... You need to ask your account administrator.
Good luck!

Oh... And your account must also restrict your particular device.

No, that isn't the case. Because if I login to my account on THEIR phone, it works. Only on my Nexus 5 does those apps not work. So, no, it isn't my account. Also they work on my Inspire 4G but again, not my Nexus 5.

Well, I can't help. If WiFi works for some things, and not others.... Then it must be an issue with those apps, or your setup or something.
Have you tried clearing data on those apps in phones settings/apps.

Perhaps you should edit post 1 to make sense then because you said the opposite as per the quote.
It doesn't make sense. I brought my old phone to school and FB works and everything. Nexus 5? Nope. My Nexus 5 won't load it, like it's blocked but its not. Guess I'll bring my old phone if I want to use Wi-Fi at school for FB? I mean Wi-Fi works. I can search and go on Instagram. But FB? No.
Any ideas?? I also had to flash stock this weekend due to a boot loop. So that isn't it.

Or the traffic protocols are different for apps than web and thusly the admins forgot to block them.
Spoiler
Now I do not condone this action, however on desktop and web browsers there is a work around (sometimes) just add https:// before the social network site. Ex.https://www.Facebook.com
Or if it is blocked like that try http:// instead.
Again, if you get caught and punished because this works, I am not at fault.

No lol it's the actual apps themeselves. FB just says there id no connection, Pandora loads infinitely but on my Inspire, another droid and an iPhone it works just fine. It isn't my account because I signed into the WiFi on their phones and their apps still loaded.
So my phone was rooted and i flashed it back to stock and most current update. Thinking that was the end of my issues i stopped thinking about it. But today i unlocked my phone and an app i had not started since yesterday was open also my phone has been randomly screen on and she knows more info then i have given. Cerberus is a security app that allows complete control over the phone. From a computer or even other phone you can get a complete SMS log, location, call log and much more. As a security app is good, but It can also be used for other reasons like spying on your SO. Cerberus doesn't requiere root and can be disguised as "System Framework" and no icon in the app drawer but it will appear as system framework on the device administrator list.
www.cerberusapp.com
If rooted, Cerberus survives a Factory Reset. (You can make it a System App with Link2SD)

If in doubt, just do a factory reset and it will wipe out everything but the stock apps.
Save everything off of internal storage first like photos, it might wipe internal storage I cant remember.
