I'm using lollipop ROM and sometimes there are problems and I wipe cache partition but what about dalvik ? Because lollipop uses art
"Wipe dalvik cache" is a legacy title (kind of).. It will wipe your current virtual machine cache.. You can check it by wiping and rebooting (if android optimizes apps on next boot, dalvik/ART cache was wiped)

There may be some boost after 2nd boot because of cleaning cache of uninstalled apps and caches that got bigger and bigger over time

I have a few question in the menu of CWM.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
-reboot system now (reboots system)
-apple update from sd card ( what does this do? )
-wipe data/factory reset (you have to do this everytime u flash a new rom)
-wipe cache partition (what does this do?)
-Install zip from sd card (install rom and kernels)
-backup and restore (make back ups and restore)
-mounts and storage (what does this do?)
-Advance (battery calibration, dalvik cache, right?
-power off ( shuts down )
Edit:
When I see rom and kernel that says 'Clear cache' is that partition cache?
From eagle blood
WIPE WIPE WIPE
wipe data
wipe cache
wipe dalvik
back to main screen
mounts and storage select format/system <<< (What is this? Is this required before you can install any rom?)''
--
Also, if I click wipe data/factory reset, than I don't need to do wipe cache and dalvik right?
I know for a fact that...
Wipe cache- just wipes the extra cache (does what it says)
Apply update- can be used to install updates like kernels if the zip is changed to update.zip
Yes when it says wip cache it means the cache partition, and you still need to wipe both caches after a factory reset.
Hope this helped!
So everytime you install a new rom, it's best to do
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition
-wipe dalvik cache
right?

Updating ROM:
-wipe cache partition
-wipe dalvik cache
-wipe data/factory reset(good in practice, but not necessary)
Changing ROM:
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition
-wipe dalvik cache
-Format System
How do I format the system?
I'm asking this because I'm going to get this phone in like 1-2 days.
Is it necessary to format system? Say Eagleblood to cm7.
When changing kernel, I should do only cache partition and dalvik cache right?
EDIT:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158377
What is this? Seems like people deleted their internal partition? What caused it?
Sorry for being a noob. :/
Edit2:
Say I got my phone running stock gingerbread, and I have CWM installed. And I wanna flash CM7.
Are these the correct steps?
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition
-wipe dalvik cache
Than install from sd card and select rom.

What's the consequence if I don't '-Format System?'
Also, if I format system, that means everything even the rom will be deleted right? Won't mess up partition table or anything like that right for cwm?

This is my first Android device, coming from a iPhone 3GS.
I have flashed rom before using CWM, but that was on my friend's HD2.

Yes. Everything will be deleted. The partitions will not be touched.
Everything I use is as follows:
Wipe data factory reset, this clears all data on your phone, including the present rom and kernel, to make room for the new one.
Wipe cache partition, this clears all saved data and stuff you've been doing on your previous rom.
Install zip from SD card (External SD)
Install zip from internal SD card, normally when you download a rom from your browser lies here.
Advanced:
Wipe Dalvik cache, this I'm not sure what it precisely does, though it clears data from previous roms.
Key test, this is mainly used for fixing broken or not working keys.
And reboot system now speaks for itself.
That's all I use for flashing anything

[Q] "Wipe cache partition" in recovery mode seems useless? What is it for exactly??
Hi. I'm using Samsung Galaxy Ace, Android 2.3.6, rooted.
I had 2 apps with cache data:
1. the system app "Internet" = 444KB
2. a user app called "RedLaser" (for reading QR codes) = 45KB
I turned off phone, went into recovery, then "wipe cache partition", then reboot.
It did nothing! The two apps still had cache, and I just deleted them manually in Settings -> Manage Applications.
So what does the "wipe cache partition" do anyway?
Also, if a phone is unrooted, is there a way to clean the dalvik cache?
Thanks all!
Its for wiping the cache of your phone application..some times if you not do this then you r apps will crash in the new rom..so its optional thing.but some times it needed...understood??
shyamjptpm, did you even read the details of my post? The cache of those two apps were not deleted through "wipe cache partition" in recovery mode. So I was wondering what it does, exactly, since it DOES NOT wipe the apps' cache.
The cache is an app cache, but not a cache of application data. You wipe that through application management (or manually with a file explorer or shell).
Think of it as an Android cache that it uses for apps and components.
Hey Archer, an app cache? Like the dalvik cache? The dalvik is for starting apps faster, correct? So is "Dalvik cache" same as the cache referred to in "wipe cache partition"?

No it's not apps - I explained that badly. It's regularly accessed data and app components, but not app-specific data. The Dalvik cache is the application cache - they are two different things.
Additionally depending on which recovery you are using, wiping the cache might not properly work all the time, that is why you read so many posts saying wipe +3; meaning to run the wipe cache (and dalvik) at least 3 times. I know I had issues with one specific recovery and switched to another because of it...

Hey, is it possible to wipe cache partition without getting into recovery mode?
And wiping the cache partition and dalvik cache will delete my game progress??
Please clarify this for me bro...
I have samsung galaxy ace rooted running on ics (myth rom). 2 days ago i formatted (factory data reset) my phone . i have a total inernal memory of 180 mb. but after formatting it it shows only 117 mb left. therefore i did it for the second time, then too it showed the same .what should i do ????? please help me and tell me how to completely format it ....
do complete wipe
wipe data/factory
wipe dalvic cache
wipe data cache
wipe battery status
goto advanced>there you can find this
what is dalvic wipe? where to wipe battery status ????
There is no noticeable memory degredation, even if you flash over 9000 times.
You don't need to wipe the battery stats.
The dalvik-cache are cache files that are needed to run apps, and it gets recreated on boot if you wipe it (so the purpose of wiping it, is to get a freshly generated dalvik cache).

Dalvic cache is the dalvic compiler cache
The battery status is deleted by the following method
Goto cwm> advanced> wipe battery status...

Try df -h in terminal and you'll see your system and sd patitions.
I did a complete wipe of data (dalvic, battery stats ,factory data reset etc.) then too it is showing the same. Is there any other way or should I approach Samsung Gallery?
Hi,
Today I successfully rooted my galaxy Tab 2 7 P3100. What I am not sure is when and why we need the
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Wipe Cache Partition
Wipe Dalvik Cache
I want to understand because I plan to try couple of other ROMs. Should I follow the above procedure every time I flash a ROM or is there a better way where avoiding any of the above is an option.
Regards.
to minimize the conflict that would occur if you use a different rom base
try it without wiping, usually meet force close dialog after booting
all i know is that wiping cache will clear data related to applications, so if you have an app force closing all the time it is sometimes handy to wipe that app's cache from the settings or wiping the entire cache from recovery.
wiping data/factory reset however will remove any app you have installed and all your personal files that you've put on the device.
Basic breakdown,
If going from one base ROM to another base ROM like stock to CM, CM to AOKP, stock to AOKP or anything like that you will need to do ALL 3 wipes.
If going from like a CM10 nightly to a newer nightly you can usually just wipe CACHE and Dalvick
If you flash addons you will usually need to wipe cache and Dalvick
BASICALLY just do what the INSTRUCTIONS for the ROM your flashing SAYS to do.
Wiping Dalvik cache before and after flasing of ROM

First of all a BIG THANK YOU.
Now One more doubt there is this ROM which I want to flash and it says to wipe dalvik cache before and after flasing the ROM. Please confirm only Factory reset will clear the existing ROM and wiping Cache and Dalvik cache wont affect the existing ROM(or internal SD Data)
Thanks again.

OK well flashing any ROM will replace your current ROM, NONE of your files (music, pictures or things like that) are touched by ANY of these wipes, Factory reset wipes out installed apps, wiping cache and dalvik after flashing or hell wipe data/factory reset won't touch the apps "built-in" to the ROM.
remember the ROM is your operating system and your files (music, pictures, and other stuff) are in the internal SD which is a separate partition from the ROOT system folder where the OS files are.
Wipe Data/Factory Reset - wipes all APPS and Google account information and resets all devices settings to default
as for the other 2 read through the answer here http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/25859/why-do-i-need-to-wipe-dalvik-cache it explains what the other wipes are about.
Hope that covers it, basically jumping from one ROM to another the most you can lose is your basic settings and your APPS (which can be redownloaded, if you didn't use an app to back them up first, but you would lose any progress in your games if you don't back them up).
i mistakenly wiped the cache and dalvik cache ..what will happen inside?? it normally booted and nothing seems to be changed ....so please tell what ares the consquences
Nothing
wiping cache- Means that The useless data of the Internet browser, Google play and etc
wiping Dalvik Cache- It Frees Up the Internal Storage Of The Device
thanks
