Looks like an unlocked boot loader is on the way! - AT&T LG G3

Shamelessly taken from the non branded LG G3 thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/lg-unlocks-officially-bootloader-t3125666

Here is LG's Bootloader unlock website. I guess keep an eye out here for when they add more devices, hopefully they add the G3.

This will never come to AT&T because AT&T would have to agree to it. That is never going to happen, so don't get your hopes up. Maybe we will se it on the international versions, but it won't be coming to the US.

This is why I will be leaving AT&T and take my account to T-Mobile as soon as my 2-year contract is completed this fall. I can't wait to raise my middle finger to ATT and say good riddance.

Not sure of your exact situation with At&t but I did the same thing and just switched over to T-mobile just recently.
I was also under contract with At&t until year end but T-mobile paid it off. So why wait? Also I was able to take advantage of their 4 lines for $120 with 10GB/per line deal going on. If you are on LG G3 and want to switch to LG G4 Tmobile has that on sale as well for $479.xx which is a great Deal with added battery, wireless charger, and an additional leather back plate...
Make sure you have unlocked your iphone with at&t before switching...but i'm sure you probably already knew that!
Good Luck. Let me know if you have questions as I just went through this entire process.

It specifically says on the G4 in EU.
I remember them saying we will get unlocked bootloaders. I'm just assuming it was a false promise.

not true because htc will unlock your bootloader without att agreement

[Q] HTC Arrive on Verizon?

Ok - I tried Sprint, and the coverage is just too bad for me to tolerate... But I really want the Arrive. I do not want a phone without a keyboard, so the Trophy won't do it for me.
I'm going to end up going back to Verizon, but I want to know if I buy an Arrive without a plan, can it be made to work with Verizon, and what consequences there would be? Someone suggested on another thread that if I wanted to get my hands dirty, I could change the ESN. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, but I need someone to show me what I need to do. Also, as far as consequences, would an Arrive on Verizon get updates? If no, would I be able to get updates from someone on here doing something similar?
Thanks for any suggestions.

AFAIK, changing the ESN is the only problem. I think you gotta have someone at Sprint/Verizon do it for you though. So hopefully that person owes you a favor
I also need to know if this would prevent me from unlocking the phone using the official dev channels. Thanks.

Grrr... I don't know anyone at either place. Any way around that? I was hoping it would be as simple as unlock it, find the ESN, and change the ESN to match that of my Verizon Touch Pro 2. Not so simple?
While I can't help with the Sprint/Verizon transfer stuff, I can tell you that, no matter who your provider is, you will always be able to officially dev-unlock your phone. Also, you will get WP7 updates, but they will likely appear only when Sprint authorizes them even if you're on Verizon.
Thanks... Since I don't have a lot of money rolling around, I really can't afford to have a phone sitting here that I can't talk on, so I'm really interested in whether I'll be able to get both talk and data working on Verizon with the phone. Someone from Microsoft on the Windows Phone team suggested buying a phone from Zones, the official site for planless WP7 phones, saying that the people at Zones are pretty good about getting the unlock codes for the phones. Would this make a difference in getting it onto Verizon, or am I likely to still have a problem getting my phone onto their network?
I've done this before and in 2008 it was much easier than it was now (posting how to get the tp from sprint on vzw at ppcgeeks)
that said, its not as easy for a variety of reasons. Personally I haven't tried to hit up pst to see if it even works
Verizon did block the hole that was previously used in 2009, so the only way to do it is through esn hacking. And on many places, that can't be discussed.
With windows phone 7 I am unsure if the process is still the same or if sprint still used msl to lock pst on their windows phone devices. Personally I would sell the arrive, wait a few weeks, and then go to the htc mozart on vzw's network. I know it's just me, but I haven't really begun to look at a cdma htc arrive to see if an esn change/hack is even possible on this platform.
I know vzw's stance on adding esn - they won't do it no matter who you are. You can try to send the device to them, but that has a very low rate of acceptance. The vzw handset alliance is a joke imho, which leaves users frustrated and with very little options.
Fooling around with the htc arrive I have to say its quite different but not a bad different. It's a shame you may have to sell it because of verizon being verizon
I know some of the regional carriers will flash/alter the ESN for you, but Verizon is pretty staunchly against it. Good luck getting it to work.
Sent from my Magnolia Incredible.
Flashing HTC Arrive
This is what i did to flash HTC Arrive using another CDMA operator (in this case, Smart Telecom Indonesia):
1. get the MSL/SPC of the phone. you can ask Sprint, or buy it from an unlock service provider (i bought it from nick flash cricket dot net)
2. put the phone in diag mode, using ##MFG#. i use winXP 32bit, and use this driver "HTC BMP USB Driver.zip"
3. connect to QPST. you can change the MSL, network code, IMSI, MDN, PRL, and auth HDR setting (evdo parameters)
4. connect to CDMA workshop to enter the AKEY
5. reboot.
now, my HTC arrive is with Smart Telecom. but alas, i can not unlock it to sideload apps

You know how rumors, Windows Phone 7 and Verizon are..... a bunch of bull****... I'll believe it when I see an offical press statement. That phone is just another one of the "Arrive" phones that passed FCC, no other info, it could be going to all the small CDMA carriers for all we know.
To the OP, you said you can't afford to have a phone sitting around and not working. How do you feel about spending $500-600 on a phone off contract ? That would be about what they would want for one.
I'd be interested in getting this working and trash the ESN on my TP2 (with a cracked display) if this was possable (and getting everything working, internet, SMS, etc with no issues) but, I'm not willing to dump $500+ on a phone that I might have problems getting working...If I could get it for $150-200, I'd be all over it though..
Edit: Checked on ebay...brand new, no contract, there is a buyit now for $360, so cheaper than I thought
Latest word on VZW is May 5th...(Next Thursday), I'd wait for that point before even attempting this.

Yeah, I saw the rumor of 7 Pro coming to Verizon (posted a link to it on another thread yesterday), and I have just about as much faith as you do. I'm unemployed, so no, I really don't want to spend $500 on a phone, but if I had to, I could, but only if it is going to actually work. And yes, I've already been looking on ebay. For the moment, I'm waiting on my refund from Sprint for the two Arrives that my wife and I had, and then I'll decide if I'm going to try it, or if it looks like VZW might actually DO something.
I'm growing more disgruntled with Verizon with every passing day, but unfortunately, they may as well be considered a monopoly where I live. I switched to Sprint for the Arrive, but had to switch back. I can look out my window, across the parking lot, and often see my pastor standing outside the church so he can talk on his ATT phone, and I'm just not willing to do that. So I guess I'm stuck with waiting until VZW gets over its grudge against MS for the Kin debacle. It's just ridiculous.

Can you, as in physically? Yes. Will they add the ESN for you? No. I read about the process and it has to be done by some really high-up tech guys. They'd lose their job doing it.

i don't know about verizon's policy. if they won't put a non verizon esn in their system, then HTC arrive on Verizon will never gonna happen, unless you can change the esn (i heard it's illegal in there).
AFAIK, in Indonesia, cdma operators will be happy to insert as many as possible other operator devices, to increase their ARPU. Competition is very tight in here, so flexibility and new technology adoption are very important. We are expecting evdo rev. B available to public in June

Yep and with the Microsoft eployee poster, it's been coming from mid Jan...We are talking almost 5 months of waiting for a phone to be released. You can show me 10,000 pictures of some phone that could of been photoshopped with a VZW logo (I do think its real tho) but, till we have a press release, it does not matter.
Verizon could wait till June 30th (as some have claimed) are you willing to wait that long ??? I know I'm not.

I'll tell you what, If we don't have at least a press statement by May 15th, I'll work with you to figure this one out. I'll call and pester tech support to get someone who will activate one (and share it with ya, if possble).
If that won't work, I'll figure out the...ugh...ESN cloning thing and use it from my TP2. I'm serious, you can PM me here or on PPCgeeks under the same user name.
I want this quest to end, if this is what I have to do, I am willing to do it... I'm tired of waiting for VZW to get off their ass and get us paying customers what we want.
I'm so pissed about it, I am seriously looking into going to AT&T and they are ok in my area but, not great. I can always go back within 15 days if I had to

Yeah... We know that at least the poster is official, so the Trophy WILL come to VZW. The question is how long they're going to jerk their paying customers around before it does.
As far as getting an Arrive to work on VZW, it would be so much easier if the new 7 Pro rumor is true AND happens sometime before Jesus comes back. But if you get an Arrive working on VZW, I will definitely be with you. I'm unemployed, so I can't afford to buy a phone if it's going to end up bricked because I did something wrong, and as far as programming, I'm just your basic .NET/SQL programmer without much experience, because at the manufacturing plant I worked at, I was the only IT guy, so I had to do it all, therefore didn't have time to specialize in anything (which is why I'm having so much trouble finding a job). And as far as whether it's legal or not to clone an ESN? Frankly, I don't care. It'd be my phone, so I really don't care what they say I can and cannot do with it.
I really want a phone, though, because I'm planning for this to make me some money, selling in marketplace. I've already paid for my developer account, and had my Sprint phone unlocked the official way, but had to send it back, since I went back to VZW. But that means my dev account is sitting there not making me any money, while the expiration date creeps closer. Also, I signed up for the MS App Garage event in Atlanta next month, so it would be great to have a phone by then. Hopefully we'll know something OFFICIAL soon. I'm so ticked at VZW.....
still would like to know if it's possable to use a ESN from my TP2 and put it on a Arrive...but, if someone could get QPST to work with it and save settings for Verizon, it should work but, it's just getting them to enable the ESN or,,,<G> clone it

I know many of you are coming from Vibrant / Galaxy S 4G and hence would like to buy Tmobile G2X unlocked.
I thought it'd be a good idea to have a thread where we have consolidated discounted unlocked pricing options.
Currently it seems $529 - $540 is the unlocked price. Please post if you know any better pricing....

I think that T-mobile price is off contract, not unlocked. Please correct me if I am wrong as i too am looking to pick one up, but live in another country so must get it unlocked as well.
I was always under the impression that if you bought a phone off contract then all you had to do was call T-Mobile and ask for the unlock code. I don't think they require you to be a T-Mobile customer. After all it's your device.
Word around the campfire is that T-Mobile isn't selling this phone to non-contracted customers, and if you contact them with the device and request a code they'll deny it. It's a t-mobile exclusive phone in the US, and they won't offer up unlock codes unless you're a customer and wait the 90 days, or the phone is no longer exclusive.
This is all rumor so far, but here was a T-Mo sales rep in another thread that said they were given new directives regarding selling off contract phones to non-Tmo customers.

So your telling me, since I am no longer under contract with T-Mobile, I can't walk into there store and purchase the device for $499 retail even though I am a T-Mobile customer?
I would hold off on buying this for AT&T (or other providers) until we get clarification on what bands it supports and how to enable them if needed.

They did it for me and my Vibrant back in July and I wasn't on contract. Did you word this wrong because if you purchase a phone through a upgrade and are under a contract they will not give you a unlock code since you do not own the device. If you aren't under contract and you purchase the device at retail price then it's all yours and they will give you a unlock code. Whether or not you have to be a T-Mobile customer is a different story.
If you have to be a customer then just purchase the phone retail and sign up for the cheapest plan possible. Ask for a unlock code which you will get within 3 days and then just cancel your account.
I did not word this wrong. I was very explicit about wanting to buy the phone, without contract, and that I am NOT a customer of T-Mobile. Every answer I received was very candid about the fact that their policy is to not give out codes and that they do have a SIM subsidy program for those who are T-Mobile customers. I will add with a grain of salt one might get lucky when they call up customer support and find a representative who does not know the current policy and unlocks your phone. Not likely.
I am going to take a chance and go through a website and pay $14.99 for it.
Customer support does not provide unlock codes. The Sim Unlock Team does.
Read this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12981927&postcount=19
They have always unlocked devices for me but I guess it's because I am a T-Mobile customer, just not locked into a contract with them. My Vibrant being my most recent device I got unlocked. Just called customer service and they emailed me the unlock code 2 to 3 days later.
Thats kind of childish on there part. There not losing any money by giving you the code since you paid for the device in full. They may have made a little bit of money off you actually. I'm sure they didn't have to pay LG $499. Like you said, your best bet is to pay a 3rd party $15 for a unlock code.
I got great news I just called T Mobile and was upfront of what I was wanting to do with the purchase of the G2x and they said as long as you buy it at full retail price, they said they have the options under their policy to give out unlock phone code at the moment of purchase. So I'm thinking of buying the G2x and than buy a phone on contract with AT&T that has good resale value and sell it, and in a way AT&T is subsidizing my G2x.

If you don't currently have a contract with AT&T, one has to ask. Why the hell would you want to go into one? If your in a area where T-Mobile has service, they have less dropped calls and faster download speeds. Every phone I get through T-Mobile has been better call wise and data wise than my Wifes iPhone with AT&T. We live North of Baltimore.

I stated nothing as fact... bro... I was merely stating that in another of the AT&T threads, someone who said they worked for T-Mo was told just what I wrote. It seems very location specific. Some people are being told they will sell them one, some are saying that they'll sell it, but not give them the code, and some are saying they're not being offered either. So, there you go... bro...
Must be something new...
It has always been T-Mobile's policy to only give unlock codes to current customers who have been with them for at least 90 days and have a good pay history. This is something new if they now allow non customers to buy a device and obtain a lock code. Since the unlock codes must come from LG, I highly doubt anyone would be provided with a unlock code on the day they buy the phone.
Could be some CS reps looking to up their quotas by giving less than accurate information. Get it in writing before you buy.

This is definitely weighing in on my decision to keep my gnex. That and I came from sprint to Verizon about a week ago and -- damn this network is fast!!! I was gonna - maybe - return, the gnex and pick up an s3. This the first I've read about a locked bootloader.

This is really disappointing to hear...what the F verizon? And wtf Samsung, where's that backbone now ya jackholes...
Wow! Im on Sprint but I feel your pain. Hopefully a unlocking method is found asap. Truly a bi*ch move by Verizon

Guys.. I am so so soooo sorry. I switched to tmobile at the last second (Verizon customer for 8 or so years)
I knew Verizon would pull this bs.

Hah. Well this sucks for you Verizon people. If I was in your shoes I'd keep it just long enough for an "unlock the bootloader petition" to be ignored, for hacks to fail, and then return it on principle, and tell them why you returned it. as long as the bootloader's not also encrypted, there's a bit of hope.
Gnexus w/ jellybean > locked down sgs3 w/ touchpizz.
Apple is definitely paying Verizon off to do this.
haha im sure it's just Verizon being douches.
Can I cancel my preorder without paying an etf? It hasn't shipped yet. I'm beyond pissed at this bull****. I'm coming from a droid x and specifically wanted AN UNLOCKED ****ING BOOTLOADER.

If it hasn't shipped yet (and you haven't been billed), I'm assuming you can.
If you receive your phone, you have 30 days to activate it.
If you don't activate, no 14-day clock start.
Ouch.. I can't wait to tell my buddy who has Verizon. He is going to crap his pants.
I should have known.
I think I will be selling it and either getting a Galaxy Nexus CDMA, or keeping my Droid 2 Global until my contract is up, then switching to something like T-Mobile's prepaid plan and getting an unlocked Nexus device.
I cannot deal with this, unless Samsung's bootloaders are different from, say, Motorola's, and can be unlocked somehow.
Verizon, the network where you can't have nice things.
Wow that sucksss! I would be beyond pissed.

[Q] GSIII Sprint to ATT?

So xmas coming around I'm getting asked what I want. I have been wanting a new phone as I've had my OG Evo for over 2 years and my contract is up in March. I was thinking of getting the GSIII but my question is, I've also been thinking of going over to ATT once my contract is up... can I swap the phone over to ATT or do I have to get another again?

Yes you can but then it will be like taking another data plan so you might have to pay extra
I'd really look into this before doing this because everything I see after doing a quick Google search says that no, you can't - the Sprint GS3 has an embedded SIM for LTE that's soldered into the phone. So you can't just pop an ATT or T-Mobile SIM in there.
There might be a way to hack it to work, but, really, I wouldn't waste my time with it outside of "let's do this for a fun hobby" - not "let's do this to use as our daily use phone". For all the work you'd have to do completely taking the phone apart and replacing parts and doing who knows what to get it to work - you'd be better off selling the Sprint phone and buying an ATT one especially if you're not good with that sort of hardware and hacking thing.
I'm going to cut to the chase, and tell you as someone who used to be a Sprint and a Verizon technician, and also someone with common sense (no offense to anyone) that, no you can't make a CDMA phone with no accessible SIM card slot work on a GSM network. The Verizon works with some hacking around, but that's because the SIM card slot is accessible and the phone has the necessary internal hardware. You'd need either the T-Mobile version (it gets AT&T HSPA+, but not LTE), the International i9300, which I use (It gets AT&T HSPA+ but not LTE), or the AT&T version (it does LTE).
Thank you for the quick replies.... So it's safe to assume that any phone I would get on sprint would follow the same course of actions as they're all CDMA. Any advice on whether I could sell my sprint one for the same price or would ATT do an in store trade in for their GSM version????

I'd guess so.
You could try to sell the Sprint one used and buy a comparable used one and maybe break even or only lose a bit to the tune of eBay fees - if you're lucky and patient. And are aware of the risks of buying used and make sure eBay has you covered.
I don't know about in-store trade-ins. Do that do that with phones from other networks ? If they're going to recover costs, I'd think they're probably not going to give you the best deal. I mean, Sprint told me my old phone had a $5 trade-in value, but it's going for $40-50 on eBay (it was an old dumb-phone, so I wasn't expecting much - but $40 is still a lot more than $5).
Personally, I would check out the ETF you have left at this point and probably just pay it if you're sure you want out instead of waiting until March and having a phone that will deprecate in value that you were never intending to keep.

There is a lot of T-Mobile branded V20's on Swappa right now.

Like 23 right now compare that to 6 AT&T and 7 Verizon branded units. What exactly is the deal with T-Mobile?
maybe people who are stuck in twrp bootloop?
Tmobile service sucks maybe

A good number of All but one of 'em are unopened/New,they probably bought 'em to take advantage of the $200 Rebate & headphone offers.
As long as they have a net gain from purchase price/rebate/sale price,I suppose it's a worthwhile endeavor.........

T-Mobile is basically giving these things away. If they used the trade in thing, it makes the phone either free or less than $200. They probably have another phone they are using and don't plan on leaving T-Mobile, so they just got one and are selling it. T-Mobile, effectively, puts you in a contract doing this. They take the price of the phone and give you bill credits for the whole term of the EIP. If you terminate service, you owe the phone. Combine that with the free line promotion they had a few days prior, I am guessing this is what is happening. The contract does not say anything about using the phone. As long as they keep their bill current and keep their service, it will be able to be used (I think...). I would be careful buying one of these V20s in case you are not allowed to use the phone on a line that isn't associated with the account, but that is me being a worry wort.

Swappa won't let you sell a phone that still has anything owed on it. They check the IMEI.
I assume the bill credits wouldn't affect this as long as the phone is free and clear.

I assume lot of the unopened were bought with significant discounts. They are being sold for $500 +/- $15.
Watch out t-mobile is the carrier that's gets the lg partner purchase program phones. They can not be carrier unlocked. That's why there up and cheap.

Won't work. When they go to get the unlock code from T-Mobile the imei isn't in their system so they can't get it and it can't be done. Trust me. I've seen this happen on the v10 and g5. Just look it up.

If that's the case, I'd think the sellers would know better than to post a listing on Swappa.
Guess we'll find out soon enough how many of the listings are fraudulent.....

There not fraudulent. Not sure why u think that. Theres nothing wrong with selling lg partner purchase program phones. They just can't be carrier unlocked and the sellers don't go out of their way to tell you. They just say their not sure.

Full disclosure is a given when selling on Swappa, anything less would be fraudulent,if not to the letter of the rules,it certainly would be in spirit/practice.
This is some good information though, glad you brought it up. :good:
I'm betting a lot of folks have never heard of such a thing.
Yeah ur right. Lol I wast trying to buy a v10 and g5 earlier this year and ran into this situation. Very difficult to deal with. Most sellers selling them do t really understand them selves and they blame T-Mobile. It probly is T-Mobile fault since it's branded T-Mobile. Just want everyone to be aware they can't be unlocked, even a third party unlock service can't. Having it on ur account for 40 days doesnt matter either. It's a crappy situation lol

I'd heard of employee deals/mfg-partner phones/etc..,but,I didn't know about the SIM Unlocking issue.
Again, many THX for bringing this up,you've no doubt saved some people a lot of trouble. :highfive:
FWIW,here's Swappa's policy on clean ESN's:
https://swappa.com/faq/sell/share_esn_numbers
Bulletproof,no,but,it sounds as if they're doing their due dilligence w/researching the ESN/IMEI,perhaps w/more tools than the general public is armed with.
Some sharp individuals here on XDA/Swappa running the show,I'm guessing/hoping they have this scenario covered, enough to ensure the buyers are protected in a worse-case scenario.
A little bit off topic, can you get square trade insurance for phones purchased at swappa?

Um I'm not trying to be a pain but I bought my G5 from Tmobile and had it unlocked in 24 hours as I was traveling out of the country. I used the app on the phone and the code the rep gave me. I've traveled to 7 countries since then and used sim cards from each one no problem.
