[APP][4.0+] Battery Use Manager with custom auto brightness - Android Apps and Games

I am looking for any and all feedback, bug reports, suggestion, or feature requests on my first real app. I know battery managers and screen dimmers have been done before, but I wanted something that was lightweight and simple to understand for non-power users. BUM is a battery manager that includes:
*Battery drained x percent in y hours alert
*Custom auto brightness with temporary bright control
*Wifi enabled or disabled based on location
*Mobile data turned off with screen, background updates on fixed intervals (except on 5.0+ - I'll add support for rooted devices if that's something you guys think would be useful)
*Low battery alerts
*Extra savings settings when alerts occur
*Custom screen timeout (any value between 0 seconds and 60 minutes)
* Coming soon - network activity detection before turning off wifi or mobile data
* Coming soon - expanded screen dimmer notification bar controls
A select few customization options are paid features but all of the core functionality is free. The only non free feature is the temporary brightness notification button for the screen dimmer.
Play Store link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.compass.bum
Thanks to everyone for taking a look at my app. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

What auto brightness notification bar controls would be most useful to people?

Man, if you could implement something like this for rooted users, It would be awesome
When WiFi = Off Then
Mobile Data on for 2 minutes, then Mobile Data off for 8 minutes - Repeat routine, only happens when screen off
Mobile Data on when screen On

I could definitely do that. I'll work on that soon.
Two minutes is actually the time it re-enables mobile data when screen is off, and the paid version let's the interval go down to 15 minutes but I could easily change that to go as low as 10 minutes. That would give the exact cycle you requested. Every ten minutes it enables mobile data for two minutes, give or take. I use inexact timing to save power.

If you're willing to test it, send me your Gmail account associated with your Google play. I don't have a rooted device to verify it's working so I'll need some help testing.

Alright, I have a build with possible android 5+ mobile data operation. I'll post it this evening.
If anyone with android 5 and android 5.1 rooted phones could let me know if it works for them that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, everyone.

It doesn't state explicitly for rooted users right? So I assume that non-rooted users will be able to test out as well?

Correct, root would only be needed for people on android 5+ and only for the mobile data option due to Google locking down programatically managing mobile data. Everything else is this app does not require root.

Published root mobile data access for 5.0+ but I don't have a rooted android 5 phone to test. Can someone verify, please?
I also added a check for network traffic before disabling. There is a 10 second delay after screen goes off and then it checks network traffic every 20 minutes until it can shut down data. This let's you stream music.
I'm experimenting with some Bluetooth management as well.

So I added functionality to turn bluetooth on when driving and off when no longer driving. Hoping to help out the people who tend to leave bluetooth on all the time so they can sync with their cars stereo. Please let try it out and let me know what you think.

Use Tasker to toggle 3G for better battery life

I have been using Tasker the last couple of days and I am really started to like this app. I havent even scratched the surface of what this app is capable of but it would be nice to have a thread for all Tasker users to share the Profiles.
I currently have mine setup to shut off 3G when the screen is off and turn it back on when the screen is on. Its been working great. I got home today from work and was at 70% battery life after 10 hrs of light usage throughout the day.
So far I have
GPS Auto on and off when I open maps
Display off / data off
Display on / data on
Home area wifi auto enable
Battery full alert
NightSMSResponder
Missed call Auto reply
Call recorder
Screen off / Data off: do you still receive emails and mms?
Best app out!
I've been using this app for awhile as well... I've been able to fully automate the processes that I had to remember to do to conserve battery.
This is my setup.
1.At Girlfriend's house - GPS off, auto brightness on, notifications silenced and from 3am - 7am text messages are set to auto reply and calls sent to voicemail.
2.Headphones plugged - Load music app, adjust media volume, and turn screen off after 30 seconds.
3.Any power connected (USB or AC) - Key lock off
4.If USB plugged and file explore (Astro, ES) loaded, mount SD
5.Maps,Navigation loaded - GPS on, Auto Brightness on, System vol to max
Just some basic profiles.
I'm still in the trial period, do I have to purchase to be able to import the download-able profiles from the step through section of the site?

I was able to download profiles while in the trial period. The only problem I had was downloading profiles that had multiple downloads. What version are you using? I am using 1.0.8b2 but I see that b3 is available now.

No I do not. I can set it up so that data will toggle on and off every 5,10,15 minutes or whatever you want it set it.
I would like to figure out a way to have tasker enter my passcode that is required with my exchange lock since lockpicker does not work with Froyo

I was trying to set that up last night but it was telling me to install APNdroid for it to turn the data off. APNdroid states on their market page that it doesn't work with CDMA, so I have to ask, how did you manage to have Tasker turn data on and off ?

If you install the latest beta version it will toggle data without using APNdroid. I do not have it installed and it works fine.

Try copying what I have showing here just to see if data is toggling. I set the delay for data on so that I could actually see the data come on. I didnt believe it was working either until I put the delay in there.

My battery life has been noticeably better.
Ya know I tried this earlier after seeing this post and it got a little annoying to figure out, I honestly have been using a program called overclock widget and it has increased my battery by at least double.... and I am running stock rooted with Sprint bloatware removed

[v1.3] Tasker: Screen off=wifi/data off(no traffic+)AutoSync+Night/Reduce CellStandby

Cell Standby Battery Drain:
Hey Guys!!
Maybe some of you know it. The cell standby drains a lot of battery. I live in a mounterial arrea and it's really annoying. So I searched a bit on Google and build a small Tasker "Script" to reduce the draining. I'm using it now for 6 weeks and it's working good! It reduced my cell standby from 35% to 2%.
So what's the magic?
First tasker will turn Airplane Mode (only cell!) on if you don't have signal. Then it'll wait for 5 minutes and check it again. Yes this sounds really simple but it was hard to build it.
I hope I can help you with sharing my experiences!
Screen off=data/wifi off it no traffic (with Night Mode):
Hey Guys, I have been looking for a solution for this problem for quite a while myself. Now I found a good solution to collect the current traffic on all interfaces. I will share a detailed explanation on how to set it up.
First off, what will happen?
If you want tasker to turn Wifi or Mobile Data off when you the turn Screen off normally you have the problem that it will interrupt all downloads. This Profile will try to read the traffic. If the traffic is below 15 kb it will turn wifi or mobile data off. If not it’ll wait until it is below 15kb. Later If you turn your screen on again tasker will activate mobile data and wifi. It'll wifi doesn't connect to a network (in the next 30 seconds) it will turn wifi off.
How does Tasker work? How can I optimize these profiles/tasks for my needs?
First what does tasker do? This is for the people who don't understand tasker. Tasker has 4 tabs (Profiles, Tasks, Scenes and Vars) but I won't talk about Scenes cz I didn't uses it yet. I also won't talk about Vars (variables) cz they are self explaining.
What are Profiles?
Basically profiles contain conditions (for example if display on/off or wifi on/off) and run a task if the condition is true. Example: If display off turn wifi off.
What are Tasks?
A task is something like a list of actions which the phone should do. (for example turn data on/off or run a specific app)
How do the profiles from this thread?
The profile AutoSync (Screen off) runs every 10 minutes while the screen is off. It turns data/wifi on checks for new messages and turns it off. It has a variable called "%SLEEP". It will only run if "%SLEEP" doesn't match "1".
The profiles Display (Data) and Display (Wifi) turns data/wifi on when the user turns the screen on. When the screen is off again it will check traffic for 30 seconds. If the traffic is below 15kb/s it will turn data/wifi off. If not it will wait 2 minutes and check the traffic again for 30 seconds until the traffic is below 15kb/s.
The profile Night (week), Night (weekend) turn the phone into airplane mode and sets the variable "%SLEEP" to "1".
The profile Wifi connected just changes the variable "%CONNECTION to "1" or removes the "1". This is needed for the Display (Wifi) profile.
On my todolist:
You say..
Changelog v1.3:
Added Greenify's hibernate now to both screen off tasks
Changelog v1.2:
Added AutoSync (every 10 minutes if screen is off)
I'm using this profiles on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus and it works very well!!
Feel free to ask me if you have problems! I'll try my best to help you.
These profiles include the greenify hibernate action from its plugin. If you have troubles with it you have to remove and readd it (on both Screen off tasks) cz my plugin is german. (plugin → hibernate)
You need Secure Settings for tasker or it won't work!! I used Secure Settings because Secure Settings can off only the cell radio. Tasker supports it, too. But not for Jelly Bean and I'm using 4.2.2 :/
How to import *.prj.xml files:
Unzip the *.prj.xml file in your Tasker/projects directory and then import it in Tasker by long-clicking the home icon or any of the other tabs. If you don't have the home tab, swipe down from the top in Tasker to show the tabs. (beginner mode must be disabled!)
Thanks for this 8D!
Useful for a beginner like me ^^!
In task screen off, why do you wait for 30 sec's in Action number 5? Also how important is the Stop Task Action? What happens if I don't include it? I mean anyways, the following 'else' won't be executed if the Mobile data turned off by the 'if'.
Just what I looked for, but How can I install your *.zip file to tasker? I just cant install it, any hint? where should I put the zip file?

You have to wait 30 seconds or how long you want to wait cz in action number 2 tasker gets a traffic number from the system. After 30 seconds it gets another. Tasker subtracts the values to get the actual traffic in bytes. So Tasker can look if the traffic is below 15 kb/s. Yes you're right. It's my fault. You don't need the Stop Task Action. It's from the old Script. I forgot to remove it. Thanks for your hint!

Hi RLicher,
Some people had the issue with the maths calculation of CHECKB_WIFI - CHECKA_WIFI. So tasker will set the variables to 0 if they aren't set. (cz wifi is off or something else). And I deleted/merged some Actions.
You can use the version from the other thread if you don't have problems
I'm using this on SGS3 but notice two issue... While listening to Pandora when a song ends the data or wifi will get disabled so the next song cant start. Second wifi or data will not be reenable when the screen is enabled.
For the record i just imported the files within the zip.

First you have to increase the 30 seconds from the two Screen off tasks [A5] because Tasker checks the traffic for 30 seconds. If Pandora loads a song for example in 40 seconds Tasker will disable data and wifi after it has been loaded. So data and wifi are turned off when Pandora tries to play the next song. Increase the value and you should be good.
And for your next issue:
Delete the imported profile and create a new profile:
Name: Whatever
Context: State → Display On
Task: Create a task which enables data and wifi
Exit Task: Screen off

Sorry I didn't read your previous post.
Unzip the *.tsk.xml files to sdcard/Tasker/tasks and the *.prf.xml to sdcard/Tasker/profiles. Then open tasker tap on tasks and hold it until a menu appears. Tap on import and you should see the files. Do this for the profile aswell.
First tasks and then profiles!! Or you'll get an error that tasker couldn't find the the task for the profile.
Thanks just pinched your files and made it turn on when the screen comes on.
My current profiles means that Wifi turns off when i leave the office and stays off until I turn it on again.
If im somewhere with no wifi will my wifi be turned on when my screen is turned on?
Would i need to create another profile which says if wifi is on and not connected to a network after X minutes
then please disable?
If so is that an easy one to create?
Thanks

First yes it will enable wifi.
I solved it with 2 profiles. One changes a variable if wifi is connected or not and the other one is turns wifi on, waits 30 seconds, checks the variable. If my phone is not connected to a wifi it will turn it off.
Do you want my profiles?

It have nothing to do with my profiles and tasks. They only enable connections, check traffic and disable the conncections. Maybe another profile isn't working correctly.
And next time you can edit your post. You don't need to make 3 posts.

Auto Pilot Mode
Current Version: 8.00
Auto Pilot Mode is a very lightweight tool to enable airplane mode. Battery rapidly drained when the phone is out of service/signal and tried to search for a signal to use. In order to prevent this battery drain, Auto Pilot Mode will detect when the signal is below a certain threshold. Once this threshold is met, airplane mode will be turned on for a specified amount of time. After this time, airplane mode is disabled and the checking process repeats.
Settings/Features Explained
Scheduling System - Automatically changes thresholds and times according to a schedule set by you (Great for when you sleep)
Threshold - This slider will determine the threshold of the signal. If the signal falls at or below this threshold, airplane mode is put into queue.
Pending Time - Specifies how long airplane mode is in queue for after the signal falls below threshold.
Airplane Time - Specifies how long airplane mode should be enabled before performing another check.
3G/4G Basic Detection - First step toward mobile data support, checks whether you are connected to a network or not
Ignore If Charging - If the phone is charging, ignore the status of signal and never enable airplane mode
Only Disable Cell Service - When airplane mode is enabled, WiFi, Bluetooth, and all other forms of communication are untouched
Start on Boot - Start the service automatically when the phone boots on.
Prevent Call Drop - If you are receiving or initialing a call, the service is paused and airplane mode is not toggled until the call is finished.
Maintain User Airplane Mode - Keeps user toggled airplane mode until user manually disables airplane mode.
Hide Status Bar Icon - Hides the icon in the status bar
Remove Notification Buttons - Removes buttons from the notification
Display More Info In Notifications - Adds more information to the notification
Send Feedback - Allows users to send feedback to the developer. (Found in the menu)
Help Option - Explanations of each settings

Any plans to add 4G/LTE support? The app seems to work great except when I'm connected to LTE. It seems to think I am out of service and enables airplane mode even when my LTE reception is great. On a Moto X on AT&T. Also the Moto X uses on screen keys, your app states that there is a menu but I can not access it as you don't have the 3 dots or hamburger menu for people without that key.

Very interesting app !! Indeed one of those functionalities that really should have come pre-built in the OS.
I have just installed it, and thus haven't had a chance to test it myself - although I have no doubt it will work as advertised.
A few ideas for improvement come to mind immediately though:
1.) As others have already asked: an option to remove the status bar icon. Also, when an icon is present in the status bar and thus there is an entry in the notification queue, tapping on the notification message should have some useful purpose, like opening the app. Currently, tapping on the notification message doesn't seem to be doing anything.
2.) As others also have noted: for a user, it is a bit unclear what would be good threshold values. We rely on the developer to provide us with sensible initial/default values. Are GSM:3 and CDMA:-113 the best choices ? If so, it might be good to indicate in the app description that the app comes with sensible defaults. Also, a "restore thresholds to default values" button or menu item might be a useful addition.
3.) The option to restore WiFi is a nice bonus. However, the underlying issue is that the problem the app wants to address really doesn't require Airplane Mode, strictly speaking it only requires the cell radio to be shut down.
a.) Why would you even want to do that ? One might be in an area with really bad cell service, but still have access to a WiFi network (e.g. in a hotel in a very remote area, but even in cities: my battery sometimes drains just from being in a building with a special type of walls).
b.) And is it even technically possible ? This app (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=the.radioshutoff) is able to do it, and I can personally vouch that it works as advertised. Note that it may not be possible on all devices, as I suspect the different radios are integrated tighter in some devices than in others. That probably accounts for the very dichotomous ratings for that app.
Do you think you could implement this into your app ? The downside is that you might have to rename it ...
Anyway, this seems like a very useful little app with a lot of potential. Thanks for releasing it !! :good:
I have being using this for a few hours and it seems to be working well at switching to aeroplane mode when the mobile signal is poor.
However it also seems to have switched off my wifi on a couple of occasions. Anyone else encounter this?

I have debated whether to implement this on release and now that there has been a lot of talk, I will add an option to remove the icon on the status bar. I initially hoped to keep the icon there to remind users the app/service is running.

Congratz, its on XDA Portal Posts
btw is it possible to have option that only signal strength (-dBm) as the threshold but not the signal bar count..?
and if i may suggest please also add option to hide notification icon on status bar, aka app service will running on background..
Thanks and Regards

It has become clear to me that my app is a little on the confusing side. The CDMA Threshold slider is measured in -dBm, I just removed the "-". Also, the app does run in the background. Although it is considered "Perceptible", if Android is running low on memory and stops Auto Pilot Mode to release memory, Auto Pilot Mode will be able to automatically restart after memory becomes available by Android; however, I will look into checking the status of the app.

I'm not sure why you have Reserved this post, I'm assuming you will edit your post with a response to my app. I just want to make it clear that you're not the developer or that you have ever helped me in creating this app.

Adding this app as an apk file to this thread will not help in future releases because I will be implementing Google's In-App Purchasing. It is required for the user to be linked to their Google Account in order to purchase from an app.

i test it and it's works perfectly..on all my phones..N5,Lg P880,hd2 and ideos...
thanks again..
I would suggest to you if it's possible add an option that search signal (when aero mode is enable) on screen on,even bypassing timer..So when i wake up my phone automatically autopilot search signal if aero mode is on...

It is impossible to search for a signal if Airplane Mode is enabled. Airplane mode disables all communication radios and does not receive or send any information.

My testing has been limited to only 2G, however, I will try my best to implement 3G and 4G detection as soon as possible. I will also add a menu button to the app.

Android versions above 4.1 should open the app when you touch the notification and not the buttons. Android versions 4.1 and below should toggle the service on and off if the notification is touched because there is not support for buttons in notifications until Android 4.2+. I has quickly come known to me that my app is rather confusing. I will attempt to write a more in-depth description and have an tutorial option in the menu. Lastly, I will look into better ways to implement what I am trying to do in a more effective manner.

The "Recover WiFi" option will only re-enable wifi if the wifi was on before airplane mode was enabled. If this isn't happening, send me an email with more information regarding your situation.
Thank you all for the feedback! It is greatly appreciated!!!
First off, thanks for the feedback on the feedback !!

Your last sentence is an understandable concern, but the reality is that this kind of app ideally is one of those set-and-forget services. Many users (especially the kind that can be found on XDA) may have up to 10 of those apps/services running and icons for all of them would drawn out the true notifications. Even on a desktop PC, where there is much more screen estate, Windows 7 has the option to hide individual status bar icons. Sorry, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings there

I installed it on a phone with 4.0 ICS and indeed, touching the notification toggles the services, I simply didn't notice it before. Would it be difficult to implement that upon toggling, the icon changes color ? e.g. a gray icon when the service isn't running. That might be a useful improvement for those wishing to keep the notification icon.

[APP][4.0+] Introducing BUM!

So my first attempt at an intelligent lightweight battery manager was severely lacking. I've learned a lot since then, so please take a look and send any and all feedback my way. Thanks!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.compass.bum
Battery Use Manager is more than a battery saver. It intelligently manages your battery consuming functions in a way that enhances your experience rather than detracting from it.
For example, BUM, as it's affectionately called, will turn your wifi off when you leave your home and turn Bluetooth on when you are driving so you can listen to music. BUM is smart. It can disable wifi or mobile data when your screen is off, but will not do so if you are streaming music. Special alerts warn you before your phone battery gets too low! The custom auto brightness and color filter will not only conserve battery but it will also improve your experience when using your phone in a dimly lit room.
* Intelligent WiFi management - automatically turns wifi on or off based on where you are, without GPS!
* Customizable Auto Brightness with notification bar controls - dim your screen at night and adjust daily brightness levels. Change the color tone of your screen to improve your sleep!
* Automatically turn on/off bluetooth when driving
* Mobile Data Management - turn on and off mobile data and wifi based on your usage (such as only one when screen is on) while still allowing streaming.
**** Root required for mobile data management on Android 5+ ****
* Set any screen timeout length - customize in 1 second increments up to 1 hour.
* Emergency Battery Saving Mode - save what's left of your battery automatically.
* Custom Alerts - Alerts for low battery and high drain!
Any feedback? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

My Tasker battery saving profiles

HELLO, so first I want you to know that I have the S6 so I don't have xposed, im limited with tasker and greenify only.
So, what my profiles do is :
- Always, but always, only one of wifi or mobile data are on.
- Hibernating apps when screen is off, but also if I am using it a lot, it will hibernate too.
- Adjusting the brightness.
- Controlling auto-sync as I want.
Im writing this guide from my phone so I am sorry if something is wrong or just bot beautiful, so lets start
Auto sync controlling
Option 1 - for email readers, needs sync a lot.
Sync on always when charging.
Option 2 - for email readers, needs sync a lot.
Sync on every 2 hours for 10 minutes and then off, you can control the time.
Option 3 - for users who don't need sync a lot(me).
Sync on only when battery level is 100% and phone is charging. ( using if condition.)
Mobile data and wifi switching So here.. I used to have a profile that turns on wifi when I am home, a little more safisticated profile I created..
Actually it's more then one profile, I split it up.
Note:lollipop users, if you have problem with mobile data, use secure settings plugin, if you have problems with the plugin too like me, use toggle data 5.0 xda version- posted in the forum.
So profile number one - when screen turns off - turns off wifi, turns on mobile data. always when screen is off, use mobile data.
Profile number two - the more complicated one - when screen turns on - turn wifi on, wait for one minute, and then (turns off wifi if not connected and keeps on mobile data) ( turns off mobile data if connected and keeps wifi on).
Hibernating apps regularly So here, what I have done is - when screen turns off hibernating all greenified apps.
I am not always turning off the screen and sometimes I use it a lot of time so every 10 minutes if screen is on hibernate all greenified apps, also I don't know maybe some apps are turning on because some wakelocks etc when screen is off (not sure) so every one hour if screen is off, hibernate all greenified apps.
adjusting brightness level When screen turns on - set brightness level to 70 and auto brightness on. Can use the phone regularly with this settings.
So that's it, if you have some more I will be glad to add and if you want some help, just ask.
