I wasn't using Chrome on my N5 because I was always missing basic features in the android version. For me, a browser has to have a home button and a exit button. Chrome for android doesn't have any of those, at least that's what I was thinking until I recently got an update for chrome on my LG GPad. Suddenly, it was all there. A home button and a small x on the tabs menu to close the browser. Finally! I was excited and updated chrome on my N5 also but it still looked the same as always. I checked the settings but couldn't find any new options.
So to make a long story short: How the hell do I configure chrome on my N5 to get those features?? Check the screenshots, first is from my tablet, second from my N5. It's the same version of chrome so there must be a way.
Why on earth do you need a "home" button? Just set your new tab page to be whatever you want "Home" to be.
As for the "x" to close a tab, it's right in the tab list, which you get to by tapping the little box with a number "1" in it in your second screenshot. There is no list of tabs across the top of the screen like there is on the desktop / tablet version because it's a giant waste of real estate on a small screen.

Yes, but it doesn't exit Chrome as it does on my tablet, it just gives me a blank dark page.

That wouldn't be much of a problem, since it immediatly disappears as soon as you start scrolling.
But I think it's really interesting from a technical point of view. Why does Chrome look different on those devices? It's the same app, isn't it? Or do tablets get a different version from the same playstore link? Some browsers have own versions for tablets in playstore, but not Chrome.

It´s the same app you get on phone and tablet. The DPI triggers if it will show the tablet or phone version. You can change your device's whole dpi to let's say 240 (with WugFresh Nexus Root Toolkit for example, doesn't even need root for that), but then everything will be in 240 dpi, which may not be very helpful.
You could try to find an per-app-dpi module for Xposed, and then edit the resolution and dpi values just for chrome, to achieve the tablet-ui.
Thx a lot for this, milestone2mod!

Hey,
I've been looking for ages for a task switching app and I was wondering if anyone had seen something good?
I've always thought that it would be really useful to have one that shows the list of apps in the notification bar and can select what apps are show.
Thanks for any help with this,
Drew
Have you tried holding down your home button?
Hey,
Yeah, tried that one, but its usually filled with settings and other things that I dont ever want to go to, so I only see like three or four apps I want to change to...It allso shows apps that are closed.
I'm being a bit fussy, the home button does do what I'm after most of the time, was just wondering if there was anything else.
Thanks,
Drew

Advanced Task Killer is a free app that will switch between apps. It is essential on the androids. I keep it widget on my desktop. When launced, it will show all the programs currently running on your android. If you hold your finger on an app in ATK, a window will pop up and you can sellect switch too.
there are lots of them, check out multitasking pro, perfect task switcher, etc.
Just do a market search and you should find what you want.

There are a couple of things I think you might like. Since you don't like having your list of apps cluttered with Settings and the like, you probably want something that you can tweak.
QuickDesk
For one, maybe try QuickDesk. It is basically a single homescreen you can access from any app by either double-tapping Home or holding Search. On top of having any widgets or shortcuts you want, there's also a sliding list of recent apps on the bottom.
SwipePad Beta
If you want something faster and simpler, try SwipePad. Basically, you can create a gesture that lets you access a screen full of shortcuts from anywhere. You choose a corner or side of the screen that you swipe away from to create an overlay that displays shortcuts to different applications.
Wave Launcher
Wave Launcher is similar to Swipepad, only it creates a smaller list of apps that follows your finger around once you do the gesture. I'd recommend following the link and watching the video since it does a better job explaining that I could do.
You should give PreHome a try. You can configure it to only display tasks that are running.
Thanks all,
I'm loving PreHome, for the whole 1 hour I've been using it for...
The double tap home function is better than my 'notification bar' idea...
The other apps look good as well but think I'll be sticking with PreHome.
Thanks again,
Drew
Hey guys,
I bought Swiftkey3 for Tablet, to replace the limited default keyboard. It works great in almost all ways, but when I have the keyboard dock attached, opening up new pages in my browser (chrome, standard browser, firefox) the suggestions stay on the bottom on the screen. It's not the end of the world, but it's pretty annoying.
I can't find any reference to this issue online. Has anyone run into this before?

Absolutely - I've been trying to fix this too!
I've poured over the "Advanced" settings and the rest. This is so annoying as it takes away from the screen real estate - when the text input area has gone away. I really don't think that this is their intended behavior.
Has any other Swiftkey 3 Tablet users figured this out? Please let us know.
Thanks!

I'm on version 3.0.4.343 trial for about a week now. For me the predictions immediately go away when switching from word processor to stock browser, but they "stick" in Chrome. Here they do go away by hitting the back button

Hi,
because i'm "not permitted to post to development-related forums" i cant ask in the right thread:
At first: many thanks @all developer - this is a great ROM!
Im using LiquidSmooth 3.1 OFFIZIAL with ASOP Recent Apps. Within the first use Recent Apps after swiping to left, the switcher asked to enable "Floating Windows". I pushed yes and i worked. But i dont know for what this floating mode is useful. So i want to disable this floating mode with swiping to left and want to restore the default behavior (close app).
How do i disable this floating mode (swiping to left)? I cant find any associated setting in menu.
Regards

Thank you for your fast answer, but exactly this setting doesnt exist in my ROM (drdevs.com/devs/teamliquid/Official/3.1/)...
Almost same problem here (Note 2 @ Liquidsmooth).
Chrome beta started to open in the floating window and the page display is dimmed, making web browsing a horrible experience. The difference is that it opens as window ALWAYS, and not only when triggered by swiping on recents.
After spending ca 3 hours looking for the way to change it I realized that such a bug (even if the option is really hidden somewhere) combined with ART issues (rebuilding cache every reboot, a well known bug of dex2oat) plus updates released only as a full dumps (reverting all modifications to /system performed on my own) absolutely DISQUALIFIES the rom whene there are so many others around.
It's far away from my conception of flexibility.
All Links Open browser in floating window
I am having the same problem. All links in Google search open the browser in a new window.

Got almost the same issue. I never use floating mode, and today, chrome decided to make its appearance in float mode only.. very annoying as you can't pink to zoom without resizing the window.
I couldn't find out how to disable that, i tried unsinstalling.. but nothing seems to help.
By the way, I am using C-Rom v7.1 on Galaxy S3 i9300.
Looks like it is time to change the ROM

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54019293&postcount=585
And roll back chrome

just wanted to tell that chrome beta fixes this issue and it works fine for me.
as also written on chuckies link i just see
fyi, the recent chrome update also fixes this issue now
We all know the Nexus Player has a Chrome browser integrated in its firmware as it is used for some settings, google cast support, etc. However, it seems the browser can be somewhat user accessed and has a bit more capabilities than I expected, such as a desktop mode, mostly baked remote control support, ability to directly access web, image, map, etc search and so on. The interface for the browser seems close to having full remote control support. Amyone can sideload the actual Chrome from the Play store, however that one doesn't have a leanback interface like the built in one yet.
Here's how to find it:
Select settings at the bottom of the main menu
Select "About" from the first row
Scroll down and select "Ads"
Scroll down and select "Ads by Google"
Scroll down to "Ads Settings" link and select it
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select "Desktop View"
Now you can select from the top bar with your remote any of the quick links for Google services, such as "Search". Once you do so, you're brought to the standard Google search page... clicking in the search field brings up the standard software keyboard (or use your sync'd phone, otg keyboard, etc). The results are displayed in normal "Mobile" view as on a phone, but you can scroll to the bottom of that page and choose to view the results in "Classic" desktop mode which is preferable.
Once you visit a site you can scroll through it with your remote as well, however navigating and clicking links seems to be hit or miss depending on the site. Also, hitting "back" currently takes you back to the settings menu instead of the previous page. I'm sure there are other quirks as well.
The point of this is: it'd seem to be trivial for an enterprising developer to wrap the existing functionality in an app and expose this near complete built-in remote ready chrome browser for easy leanback web browsing on the NP. Or, of course, the obvious route of Google exposing this web browser to leanback itself. Interesting.
This is cool to know. Love or hate the old google tv boxes (the ones with honeycomb) that is one feature they had done really well was they had a really awesome version of chrome browser that was very similar to the pc version out at the time. Still one that is made to work with the NP is good too.
I was able to install Chrome Beta from the Play store, and after getting past the "I Agree" screen it works perfectly. I'm using a BlueTooth KB/Mouse.
I'm using ChainFire's Launcher to start it, as the Icon doesn't populate on the home screen.
Tried this but can't get beyond "Ads by Google". When I select this I get a black bar down the center of the screen (1/3 the screen) and it flashes some information but then goes back to black.

Same happens with me. I read in another post Chrome will work (non-beta) but launched through the Chainfire sideload launcher. Also read Nova launcher works. Will test this weekend and update.
Strange. I still have no problem getting in to the built-in browser doing what I wrote above as long as Chrome from the play store isn't installed. If you instal Chrome from the play store, it supplants the built-in browser and the procedure above doesn't work anymore.
I also have Chrome from the play store installed... it works ok, but not as well as the (near hidden so useless) built in browser when it comes to the remote control support - with keyboard and mouse Chrome from the play store works perfect. I also don't like the Chrome from the play store defaults to its "mobile" UI in search, etc.
Hopefully Google will surface the built-in soon and provide an easy link in the main leanback interface.
I thought I got rid of the Chrome browser I had downloaded as a test but I hadn't. Once I did, the built-in now works except it does not fit the screen correctly (menu items at top only display half).

Your TV is probably not in "just fit" kind of mode... it's probably over scanning or set to 16:9, etc. If you can change the aspect ratio through your TV settings that'll probably fix the issue. Most media content is designed for overscanning so won't be an issue, but things like web browsers, PC screens, etc are not.
I was able to get the built in chrome by just installing google search from the playstore..

Yes turned it off... didnt like it
At first (in the DPs, with Chrome Beta) I kept it off because I liked to switch among the tabs and close them using the gestures, but since the final 5.0 was released, I got used to have different windows for different tabs, and I really like the fact that you can manage the tabs directly from the multitasking view, without having to actually open the app.
Anyway, I don't think "it's great", but it's not as bad as it looks before one gets used to it
I dont like it at all it just makes browsing much more complicated so i turned it off

exactly
stupid feature to incorporate!
The only matter for me is with merged apps and tabs you can't find how many tabs you already open.
Yes I turned it of because can't see tab count and it is not useful for adding new tabs
Turned it off , stupid idea...
I'm not sure it's great, but I use it so that I don't have to open Chrome up to manage my tabs.
"Useful" I think is how I'd describe it.
Why did google scrap the swipe to side to switch tabs anyway? They had it originally when chrome came out, now you have to swipe the address bar, dont feel like swiping with my thumb at the top of the screen. This is the only reason im not using chrome, opera has some handy buttons at the bottom for navigation.

Exactly, with the recent tabs I have no idea how many tabs I have open. I was shocked when I switch it off and I have 20 tabs open wth. Also they really need to put a clear all or something on the recent apps, when the list gets too long it becomes kind of useless.
At first I thought it was a good idea. But then i got so used to the tab icon on old versions of chrome that I would sometimes press it even though its not there. Then I got annoyed that if you had many tabs, its not gonna show all the tabs in a row, sometimes you have to scroll thru other processed apps
Disabled!
If the recents / app switcher was not subject to the lag it has right now, (which is really disappointing when compared to 4.4.4's ease of window switching) it would be a substantial improvement. As it stands, there's just nothing that makes me want to see tabs displayed that way.
Didn't even know we had an option to do so. Turned it off right away.
