[Q] Managing my ROMs - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have Android, Cyanogenmod, Sailfish OS, Ubuntu Touch, and Firefox OS installed along with MultiROM. Can I update these ROMs as new versions are released without losing my data?
Can I delete my stock Android ROM? It seems to be important that it has the kexec patched kernel so I'm not sure if I can do that.

...

As for updating, it seems like there's a different method for each ROM. Is there a way to store my data separately from the ROM so I'm sure it isn't deleted when updating?
I'm still not sure if I can delete my primary Android ROM.

I've successfully swapped the primary Android ROM with a secondary CM12.1 ROM, and it looks like there is no option in TWRP to delete the primary ROM, only an option to perform a factory reset on it.

[Q] Mostly Stock ROM

Hey there,
I'm looking to create a custom ROM, based on a stock ROM. The only additions to the custom ROM would be the addition of a few apps in the /system/app/ folder (so they couldn't easily be deleted).
After the custom ROM is pushed to the phone, will it be the ROM that is used when a Factory Data Reset is performed?
This is all for a demo phone, so I'd like to be able to reset it back to my custom ROM every morning.
Thanks
breon

[Q] Few questions about 5.0 flashable zips

I'm running latest L preview (rooted, custom kernel), multiROM.
1. I flashed LRX21O flashable (NOT this one , can't find that one ) as a secondary ROM . It booted up properly etc but it didn't give me any option to restore my previous apps. I tried doing factory reset, reflashed. It didn't help. Is there any way to force it?
2. How do I upgrade my recovery from android L without using pc? (flashify doesn't work on L so I can't flash .img files without PC)?
3. Is it neccesary to flash new radios?
3.1. How do I flash radios if I want to keep my multiROM and L preview as my primary ROM until I move everything to 5.0 final (I am planning to have both ROMs on my phone for a few days until everything is really configured because I don't like it when I find something missing on my new ROM that I just had on a ROM that I just deleted)?
(I have quite fast internet so it is not a problem to download these flashable zips)
Thank you for your time

[Q] Sideload another ROM

Hey guys, I'm kinda new to the Forum and figured I'll just post my question here.
I'm running a nightly of AICP 7.0 on my Nexus 5. I previously ran Lollipop but discovered that it drained a lot more battery than KK so I switched back. Now I want to try the Cataclysm Lollipop ROM, but I don't want to install all my apps again or wipe my current ROM. Is it possible to just sideload the Cataclysm ROM over my existing AICP ROM via TWRP Sideload function? If not, you guys have any clue how to do this? The main reason I want to sideload and/or install without losing my apps is because I want the Google Cards and Google Now to work for me which it doesn't in Lollipop. I previously ran KK and sideloaded the Lollipop image and that left me with all my apps and Google Now as it is and everything was good (expect for the battery drain and camera FC on Lollipop)
Any help on this would be much appreciated

sideloading in twrp means to put the file on your phone via adb. what you want to do is dirty flash. first, make a nandroid backup in your recovery(in case dirty flashing doesnt go well, then you can restore your old rom). then download and flash the other rom in your recovery(su and gapps also). by dirty flashing, you dont lose data. if your dirty flash didnt go well, you can restore your nandroid backup.

[Q] Bricked or not bricked

Hi XDA community,
I updated my One+ one to OS Oxygen lollipop (succesfully) by loading the zip file from the TWRP menu, but I prefer the 4.4.4 version (main reason is battery life), so before reinstalling the original CM11, I decided to 'clean' a little bit my phone.
I think I wipe too many things (like system, data, sdcard...) (erfff, I know, I'm stupid and make a big mistake, but that's not the point !)
Now, I have a nice phone, without any OS.
Question is :
How can I copy a new ROM zip into the phone storage to install it from TWRP ? (the only way I know to inxtall a ROM)
Or maybe I'm totally wrong and I need to do something else, but what ?
I'm not a total noob, but I'm really stuck with a OSless phone and don't really know what to search.
Can someone point me to the correct direction ?!
Thanks in advance

Hello,
Since last ROM you used was based on Android Lollipop, you can flash any Android Lollipop based ROM without any issues by just pushing the ROM.zip along with GApps.zip in the internal storage.
If you want to rollback to any Android KitKat based ROM, you need to flash CM11S firmware first before flashing any Android KitKat based ROM otherwise you'll end up bricking the device.
And if you happen to flash Android KitKat based ROM first and then suddenly changed your mind to upgrade to latest Android Lollipop based ROM, then recommendation is to first flash any CM12 nightly and then flash any Android Lollipop based ROM.
Thanks Mister for your answer
My pb was more about how can I copy the ROM on my phone, but anyway, I found a solution with the USB-OtG :good:
I copy the CM11 rom on the OtG key, plug it on my phone, and from the TWRP menu, I successfully mount the 'otg-usb', so I can browse the additional usb key plugged on my 1+1, and select the correct zip file.
By the way, many thanks for your explanation and direction on how I can upgrade/downgrade my device without brick it !
Long life to XDA

[J700F / J7 '15] Trouble Booting Centaurus OS, stuck on black screen

Hey there,
I found a J7 2015 (the Exynos variant) sitting in my dad's drawer. I decided to come here after a full day of trying to get Centaurus OS (from here) up and running but in vain. The reason why I am here and not on its official thread is that the official thread is closed.
After powering on the device and seeing the Samsung Logo, it is just a black screen from that point onwards. I am able to go into download mode or recovery and restore another OS, which is good, but Centaurus OS seemed fairly stable based on the feedback on the thread. I am able to get other ROMs running, including ones that are based on Android 7.1+.
Here is a summary of my attempts. I will try to not keep it long.
Method 1: Starting from Android 5.1.1 stock
Flashed TWRP 3.0.2
Factory Reset + Delete Data
Flash ROM and go through setup
Stuck on that black screen after restart
Method 2: Flashed Android 6.0.1 stock from SamFirmware.
Tried with either TWRP 3.0.2 or 3.3.1
Factory Reset
Flashed a ROM with Android 7.1
Factory Reset again
Flashed Centarius ROM
Stuck again on Boot
I have done variants of those methods multiple multiple times but nothing really worked out. I am certain I am using flashable files that are 100% designed for my phone model.
So here's what I am asking for:
Could anyone help me fix the issue? OR...
May I know of another fairly stable ROM for the J7 2015 that is based on Android 7 or higher?
Thanks a ton for passing by
Oops, this was too ridiculous on my side. It actually worked finally. Here's my setup and what I have done:
Setup:
TWRP 3.3.1 tar file Flashed via Odin
Boot into Recovery
Go to Wipe > Advanced Wipe
Check Data, Cache, SYSTEM, etc, but not External MicroSD Card and USB OTG
Back to TWRP main screen, Reboot > Recovery, ignore warning
Flash the Centarius ROM from the external MicroSD Card
Should work after reboot
After trying quite a bunch of ROMs, there's actually nothing that matches the stock ROM for our J7. Other ROMs, whether LineageOS based or based on some other ROM from another phone, are half done with minor, but annoying issues.
This is the stock ROM I used. He got a more recent version of Android Security Patches, but still quite old now. Use that one, or if you are security-paranoid, then consider switching to another phone.
