[Q] e-Tab 5 - We need help - General Questions and Answers

Hello
I am writing this one for a large number of students so this is not a personal request.
Recently (Turkish) government issued us tablets for our education but they are not really useful for their purpose. As it is an only education device it is pretty restricted so no apps installed, no webpages accesible instead of a few government pages and we can not even turn off wifi. We want to have a privilege escalation to make it useful for at least everyday tasks. Settings are restricted, no developer options, bluetooth, apps management section etc. accesible. And its device manager software blocks USB connections and is responsible for the other restrictions. Any tips for possible bugs to enter unrestricted settings app? Because in older versions of the tablet they were two seperate settings menus - the one that is unrestricted(original) and the one govt. modified to be restricted. In older versions this was possible by small bugs like settings widget or some other apps(e.g entering settings from the calendar app). Those seem to be fixed and we need advices. If required, we will write our hardware as we can learn.
Thanks in advance.

[Q] A Grad Project in App Usage Stats

So, I learned almost everything I know about "adjusting" mobile devices from everyone in the community here at XDA, but this is my first help request.
I'm working on a graduate project designing a model for targeting users based on their demographics, and that demographic's usage trends. I am designing a survey that will hopefully match the empirical data (part i need help with a gathering technique for) within an acceptable deviation.
The piece I need help with is finding a practical solution for pulling data from an android phone into a database for mining. (like if I could export the data from Spare Parts?)
Data I need:
1) device usage time
2) app usage time by app name
3) number of app launches
(basically what spare parts gives you, but if there's more in the logs more data= better!)
Here's the preconditions I have:
1)I have physical access to the device, computer, and any hardware I might reasonably need. No need to do this over the air, but if its practical to do so I'd love some direction.
2) It should be able to pull past usage, like spare parts does. So it's not dependent on a user installing it and then coming back for us to collect results.
3) I'm reasonably sure there won't be, but if there's a way to build a platform independent tool that could collect data from as many major platforms as possible i'd love to hear about it.
Overall I'm looking for brainstorming help, or things like sys logs I don't know about, but coding help would be appreciated as well. HURRAY CROWDSOURCING!
There may even be some grant money come fall for someone interested in solving this aspect of the problem.
Thanks in advance to anyone with a good idea!

Feature request for Android market: filter by Build.DEVICE: need your help

Hi pals
As many apps developers here on XDA what I develop and publish on Android market is device-specific.
(Free and Commercial)
Those apps
- require certain hardware features (like an Audio codec, Super AMOLED screen & driver), often related to additional Kernel features.
- can only support a limited set of devices but also Kernel versions.
And like everyone I'm really annoyed by 1-star comment.
"pure crap, doesn't work on my beloved phone"
Of course, it's not the majority, but its always increasing with the popularity.
It's annoying when its free apps, but when you decide to sell apps and try to give the best service, it becomes really bad.
And people disappointed is really not what you hope when you share your creation.
This is why I'll appreciate some backup from you by leaving a comment on this thread named
Missing filter by Build.DEVICE and ability to contact customers from comments
I propose the idea of filter by Build.DEVICE because it's useful for my app. You need additional filters too right ?
By custom ROM? By Kernel version? Explain you needs
− in this thread on official Market forum of course - writing your comment here is nice too.
We are all used to an unprecedented level of user support here on forums, by the hackers themselves or the community of users. This is really something special.
Its maybe a bit bold to say that, but I'm sure Android Market has a lot to learn from communities like ours in order to improve its consumer satisfaction... so lets show them how to
PS: sorry for inviting people to another page (Google's one) at the occasion.
This is, I guess the best way to be heard by them: by posting on their dedicated tool for requesting features (they'll read)

Filtering by ROM / kernel is way too specific, but by device is great. I support this proposal.
this would be an incredibly useful feature for developers on XDA. since many hobbyist developers put an app that only works on the device they're developing it for, it would make sense to be able to whitelist or blacklist certain phones so they can be restricted to certain phones.
for instance, I'm sure the developer of RealHDMI (the Droid X HDMI mirroring app) would have loved this feature when people with EVO's were trying to install and were (not shockingly) unable to use it and giving the developer negative feeback. for a community such as this, I can't help but see how this could be an amazing addition to the marketplace.
I don't think its realistic. Google may well come round to a warning message (after accepting permissions perhaps?) saying 'your device is not supported'. This would help in situations such as the Android 2.1 Galaxy S's inability to play ball with Skype, and various games that don't support or fully support some chipsets, as well as your own, very real, problem.
Filtering per device will only pave the way for more fragmentation jibes and claims by Apple/Microsoft that Google are inflating number of apps available. We have to remember Google's priorities: PR > OEMs > Developers > Consumers > Facebook. They *need* to stop any fragmentation claims and *need* to boost app numbers in line with App Store, all to prevent counter PR.

Its not by ignoring facts and developer needs that you prevent fragmentation.

[Q] Technical Feasibility / Android Dev

Hello I am an entrepreneur and I am trying to determine technical feasibility of an application idea. If this is viable, I am willing to hire developers.
Please let me know if this is feasible.
The basic idea is an app that blocks users from opening other apps for a specific time period. for example, you open an app, determine the time frame that you do not want to allow yourself to be on facebook. save the information. then if you try to access the facebook android app, you will get a notification from the other app that says you cannot access the app turning the specified time period.
I'm aware of the sandbox structure but I want to know if permissions can be altered so that the information entered in one app can block facebook usage for a set time.
I greatly appreciate this.
Luke B
I am not familiar with Android per se, but am pretty familiar with several comparable app sandboxing schemes.
Sandboxing is specifically used to prevent this kind of thing. If you go low-level (break\mod the operating system), you can go around it.
Low-level techniques are not "mainstream" and will not work for a consumer app, as most users will not be willing to run in a custom configuration required for this to work.
sorry bro me not familr

Dev wanted for tablet project - paid (NYC)

*Mods: if this is posted in the wrong place I apologize, couldn't find a more suitable forum.
Hello XDA,
My client, which is a company based in NYC is looking for a serious developer to help create their own "closed OS" (think Amazon.. etc).
Knowing how many insanely amazing devs are on XDA I figured i'll give it a shot
Please see the ad below:
We are looking to design a company only closed system tablet.
The tablet will be used by our employees and should be restricted to company specific apps.
Users will have no access to the full options / settings of the system, will not be able to install anything.. etc.
The system we are looking for:
• Closed OS system that will only run specific apps. Users should have no access to well.. anything but the apps we need on it. (think Amazon tablets).
• Ability to push updates and notifications.
• Ability to remote manage the device.
• Multiple interfaces (2 to start with) – based on the login.
• We are open to device suggestions, whatever will make development easier. 8-10”.
The person we are looking for:
• Local - We are based in NYC (Manhattan) and would like someone that we can work face to face with.
• Professional and knowledgeable – You need to know the Android system inside out, or at least well enough to strip / adjust features as needed.
• Have time – We need someone who can dedicate the time needed, when needed (within reason of course). Would like to have an alpha version ready within 2-3 months (again, if possible).
• Must be allowed to work in the U.S.
You will be required to sign an NDA and non-compete during the first meeting.
Interested ?
Shoot me a PM with a little info about yourself and an email you can be reached.
And please, serious inquires only, this is a paid project which will be on going for a long time if it works out.
Thanks everyone!

[Completed] Dedicated tablet for business promotion

Hello, I appreciate the help in advance.
I am wanting to give inexpensive tablets to agents who can show potential clients information about my company. On this tablet would be a dedicated video or 2 with links to files and that would be the only thing on the tablet. There would be no benefit to anyone to take the tablet as there would be no additional apps or the ability to change the tablet. Any Suggestions?
Depends. There are guest modes of a lot of Android devices now with 5.0 and 6.0. And you can restrict what apps and functions those guest users can use.
Go to Settings > Users to set the permissions.
