Curious, what have you done with your rooted stock ROM? - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone,
So, I've just rooted my Xperia Z3. I'd rather not unlock my bootloader to lose low light camera functionality, but I'm curious what y'all have done with your Z3 after rooting but have stuck with stock ROM?
One thing I've done is replace the hosts file to reduce/remove ads from my apps. This has worked well previously so I figured it would work well now.
Any suggestions?

@nedooo,
If you don't mind, can you provide a list of things you've removed from your Z3?
Also, with the system app manager, how do you use that to push updates?
Yes, backups are always great.

I'll try
When you open system app manager and tap any app shown (all apps - installed "white letters", phone system apps "red letters" and "greyed" - updates that can be integrated in system) on top right corner there is big button - "Manage", tap it and select integrate update to system...only one app you must avoid "Android System Webview" do not touch only that app...all rest you can integrate etc...
Well I removed bunch of stuff...Google Now, Maps, Keep, Drive..File Commander...all live wallpapers but Sony one...Small apps...Sony longue...Office...Chinese and Japanese keyboard...
Roughly that's it, but adapt it to your liking...

nedooo,
Are you referring to the Settings > Apps screen? If so, I don't see that option on any apps.

Some of my apps that require root:
Adaway - blocks ads
Greenify - puts apps to sleep when they're not needed.
Better battery stats - helps identifying energy hungry apps.
Afwall+ - Firewall
Recently - makes the recent panel useful again.
I use Tasker with the secure settings plug in (root) to manage brightness, sound, lockscreen security,... And then you have the seemingly endless world of xposed modules, e. g. Xprivacy, true silent mode, app settings, unicon, notify clean, 20mp superior auto, Xperia xposed,...
If you want to, you can stop using your phone and just mod it all day long

Bloatware That is Safe to Remove?

so i rooted my tb. i want to keep it as close to stock as possible, but want most junk off too. so ive done this a few tiems and removed things like facebook twitter quickoffice and a lot of widgets. but each time i do, my wifi wont work. if i click it on it turns itself on in a few seconds and tells me error, cannot enable wifi, and things like that.
anyone know what specific file im deleting and shouldnt be? or are they all tied and signed together so no matter what i touch in root explorer im going to mess up wifi? or does anyone have a list of the files in /system/app that can be deleted? i want my free space to be 500mb or more
well more bad news for me. i switched back to my bloated rom this time and didnt remove a single thing, an dim still getting the wifi error 'unable to scan for networks' when i toggle it on. then under wifi it just says error.
i saw a few other phones experience this and by deleting the file bcn_supp they solve this, but i just searched for the file and could not find one on my phone. i guess doing a full factory reset will make me lose root? ugh, its my only option at this point. i flashed that virusrom and wifi works under that, but its not what i want to keep running on my phone

You can freeze them with Titanium Backup instead of removing them. The apps will still be installed (taking up space) but they won't be allowed to run (no CPU or RAM use) and it's safer than uninstalling. That's what I did. I'll probably get CM7 so I can just wait for that; no bloatware there.
or in root explorer you can rename them to xxxx.apk.bak and they'll be still on the phone, but gone and you get a chance to find out if removing it causes force closes or not..if it doesnt, then you can delete it for real.
i use titanium to back up, but i dont want to freeze them. i remove them with root and put them on my sd for storage. i want the free system space. i restored my bloated back up, did a factory reset and voila. it worked. so i deleted all my widgets and bloat. still works. problem solved. no more com.htc.bgp errors either.
on to the next problem..

My battery had definitely got better. I removed a few more things based on these lists and now I have 520mb free. Plus a clutterless app drawer
This is a good topic, very informative.
Anyone know the directory where all the system APKs are stored?
I tried /system/app ? I don't see them?
woops, gotta mount first. Answered my own question. Sorry

After you've rooted, just use root explorer, navigate to the system/apps folder, in the top right you'll see "rw" click that so it reads "ro"
then you can rename the apk's to .bak and see which ones will be fine to erase (i put an 'aa' or something in front of the files i rename so they'll all be at the top of the folder for me to delete or move once ive tested the phone to make sure there's no force closes

Hi. Im new. lol But I just rooted yesterday. Was looking for a list of bloat apps I could get rid of and just had an interesting idea. I aplogize if it has already been discussed but...
Has anyone ever thought of replacing wanted orignal apk's with updated versions, such as youtube? And supplanting unwanted ones with other useful app apk's that don't come with the phone, but using the old file names? Would the phone recognize the difference if later unrooted and factory reset?
Thanks for any input.
wow sorry, 1.5 year dead thread ;(

What's your list off freezing apps?

What apps do you freeze/remove after installing new ROM? I thing this could help some users that want to improve performance of their phones, by freezing apps, but don't know what to freeze.
So, to start, here's my list:
Black Hole, Bubbles, Magic Smoke Wallpaper, Music Visualization, Phase Beam, Android Live Wallpapers, Live Wallpaper Picker (all live wallpapers that I don't use...)
Voice Dialer (I'm not native English speaker, so this is pointless...)
Tags
Sound Recorder (I don't record anything....)
NFC Service (Really, how many of you use this? I don't see the point....)
Movie Studio (I don't ever edit videos on my phone (nor computer))
[DESKTOP]Launcher (I use Nova Prime)
Face Unlock (Nice feature to show off your new phone, but not working that well on our NS)
Email and Exchange Services (I don't use Email apk, as I only use Gmail for my mails...)
None of those will improve any performance, to be honest. NFC only works when, well, when it's being used. Live wallpapers don't even show up in the app drawer. If anything, disabling the Google apps you don't use may help, but I only disable them so they don't show up in my app drawer.
My current list:
DRM
News and Weather
Email & Exchange Services

[APPS] List your apps.

There was an apps list thread on the HTC hero forum way back which I found quite useful. If you use any apps other than the standard one list them with a brief synopsis of what they do.
E.g.
Utorrent - torrent downloads straight to phone
Mx player - media player
Snapchat - instant disposable photo sharing
Root explorer - my fave file explorer
Better battery stats - find out what's draining battery
Greenify - hibernate apps, helps speed and battery
Candy crush saga - great puzzle game
Bike race - race against friends (current fave)
Fast and furious - drag race style
Tetris - a classic throw back
Wallbase - the best in wallpaper selections

I've got over 100 apps on my phone but I'll just go through and name my favorites.
Superbeam - Use WiFi direct to send files. Far better than android beam.
ESPN ScoreCenter - Simply the best app for sports notifications.
Weather Channel App - Nice interface that gives you weather for your location or others.
GSam Battery Monitor - Great app for checking what's using your battery and displaying numbers.
Snapchat - It's like MMS... but more fun!
Reddit News - My reddit client of choice.
Nandroid Manager - An elegant way to extract data from nandroid backups.
Titanium Backup - You should know what this is by now.
Notification Lockscreen - Receive notifications on the lockscreen for android 4.2. I prefer it to DashClock.
Nova Launcher - My favorite laucnher, because of it's pure quickness.
Flipboard - A pretty way to get news.
xda premium - Support xda and browse the forums!
Baseball Superstars 2013 - Addicting baseball game.
Battle Cats - A game... hard to explain if you haven't played it.
Greenify - Save battery and free up RAM by hibernating apps.
Google Play Music - Music by Google.
Flixster - Great way to see local movies and a quick glance at their reviews.
AdAway - ADS BEGONE!
Others: Gmail, YouTube, Facebook, Dropbox, Google Maps, Hangouts, Netflix, Translate, G+, and more.
AccuWeather - my choice for weather app
AirDroid - wirelessly connect to your computer
Podkicker - simple but reliable podcast catcher
Rotowire Fantasy News - best source for quick fantasy player news updates
Tunein Radio - streaming radio
Tweetcaster - my favorite twitter client
Google voice - voice mail & more
Waze - because Google Maps hates my phone
X-plore file manager
Zedge - ringtones and wallpapers
Swiftkey 4 - best keyboard ever

My Go To Apps
These are my go-to apps...
Accuweather (Go to Weather, especially on AOSP roms)
Amazon Kindle (Kindle apps rock though I wish they had more fonts available on Android)
Bacon Reader (Reddit client)
BetterBatteryStats (GSam for Sense, I use BBS to get in-depth info for testing AOSP/AOKP ROMS)
BuildProp Editor (Very useful)
Candy Crush Saga
DashClock (Notification lockscreen sounds awfully tempting though @RollTribe!)
FalconPro (Unfortunately it's days are numbered but I'm going to hang with Falcon for as long as possible.)
feedly (Google Reader replacement)
Firefox (I use Firefox at work, the bookmark sync works and seems more stable than Chrome. I dunno, I dig it.)
Glowfly (Nice MMS notification for lockscreens and popups)
Google Play Music (Just dumped Spotify in favor of All Access)
Nandroid Manager Pro (No more Tibu, this is what you need to restore apps)
No-Frills / Kernel Tuner (No-frills most of the time but KT gives some extra dual core controls)
Nova Launcher PRIME (The best launcher, period)
Pocket (Go-to app for keeping up with articles I can't finish atm)
RunKeeper (Gotta get out and break a sweat, might as well track it #NerdAlert)
Snapseed (Forget Instagram, this is my choice for editing pics)
Swiftkey Flow (So smooth)
Tapatalk (bought XDA premium but the lack of a search feature is a deal breaker...if they added search within a thread let me know!)
Here's what it looks like..

[Lightweight App alternatives] - Pump your phone with energy!

Hello,
recently I became obsessed with replacing Batter Hungry applications with their low power alternatives which has almost same functions. Every app I try has one full battery cycle. I do not have the values of how many power the apps consumed, you just have to trust me or ignore it. Some of these apps are very simple (I am a simple user, I need phone with awesome battery life and good funcionality).
I am open to alternatives, so write what you are using and think it will be better and I will give it a try
I have Huawei Phone, so I do not need Greenify. EmUI does stopping services by itself.
So here is the list:
Mails : AquaMail(Free/0.99Cents now on sale!) - It does support all email types, Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, FastMail, Apple, GMX, AOL and more. It has unified inbox. You can select if you want push notifications on some account or just download messages every X minutes. It is very customizable and more power saving than everything I tried. The interface is kewl too, you can from notification delete /mark as read message etc. Definitely worth a try, now it is on sale ( with free app you can add to the app just one email account). THIS APP SHOULD NOT BE GREENIFIED/KILLED IF YOU WANT PUSH NOTIFICATIONS!
I tried : Gmail, BlueMail

Music: ??? Now my favourite is ported app from sony called Music - It has all kind of features I expect from music player while keeping battery hungriness low.
viz. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2728110
I tried: Google Music, Huawei Player, PiMusic Player, and a lot of another one (15+) I did not wrote it down.. Now I will.
Browser: Lighting browser (Free/Paid 0.99 cents) - This browser is amazing, compared of others its incredible. It needs less than 5 MB of storage and has nice minimalistic UI. It has everything you expect from a browser, adblock, tabs, speed, clean UI without adds and more.. Definitely worth a try and did I mention the battery? <3
Link to Google Play : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=acr.browser.barebones
Tried: UC Browser, chrome, Naked Browser, Opera, Firefox, Doplhin Browser, Puffin
Facebook Messenger : Messenger Lite (Free) - This messenger is a masterpiece, I do not need the circle overlay from FB messenger, and I do not need to video call to my friends.. This messenger has everything you expect from it, you can connect with your friends and write them messages, emoji and be calling them. I can see who is online and all your contacts. Well I do not need integration with SMS app because for SMS messaging there is a stock app. This is a huge memory and battery saver!! I liked the overlay from original fb messenger but now I do not want it, I am just used to used my phone efficiently.

Launcher: Now is wining Nova Launcher (Free/Paid) - It is highly customizable launcher, it supports dynamic unread badge, has dark design, you can scale icons and basically do everything with it. It is easy on memory and battery compared to another launchers.
Link to Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.launcher
I tried : Arrow launcher, LppLauncher, Flick Launcher, Evie Launcher, Cold Launcher, Apex Launcher, KK launcher, Nougat launcher, DailyDo Launcher and more which I can not remember.
Weather and Widget : Transparent Clock Weather (Free/Paid) - This is a tricky category, I except from weather widget to allow me get to the Clock app ( to setup alarms etc.) by clicking on Time on widget. And this one do, also its battery friendly (depends on fruequency of weather actualizing). It has nice weather and the predictions follows your location.
Link to Google Play : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.droid27.transparentclockweather
I tried : Yahoo weather, Yo Weather, Weather Live, Weather, YR Weather, Today weather
Facebook app : Simple for Facebook (Free/Paid) - Well this section depends on how much you using facebook, I am a simple user I just read feed and sometimes post some status or upload pics, if this is what you want then this app is for you. It works as a wrapper on facebook web API. If you courious you need to give it a try. This app is huge memory and battery saver. Also its very small it needs just 5,6MB of your storage
This app will help you to get better battery life on your phone Mainly if you are runnning out of RAM or Storage the replaces for FB App and FB messaging app will save you.
I will be updating this post as I will be testing more apps. Currently I am looking mainly for Music player and Weather widget If you know any awesome APP which is battery friendly just let me know and I will try it

Anyone used this enough yet care to give a review?
Placing calls and the my apps widget are both not working for me. I can launch my dialer, textra's or contacts but the launcher won't place phone calls. The My Apps widget says drag here, but after doing so is blank. I've tried reinstalling the app and rebooting. I'm on AICP nightlife's with magisk root. Android version 8.0.0 on a Nexus 6P.
Edit: After reviewing screenshots, the theming is not working either. It changes the system information panel but none of the app names have any color behind them not a border. They are just text. The icons are also not showing in the app menu. I shot the $.99 your way before testing and I'm cool with that. The app has a great concept. If you need any logs or other information let me know. I'll attach screenshots when I leave work.
1. Neon mode won't enable.
2. Apps in side menu have no icons when option is enabled which also results in them not being able to be dragged to home screen.
3. occasionally crashes for some reason
Pixel XL 8.1 DP1
For those who are experiencing problems on android 8. Try version 1.4.2.
The app crashes too much and needs many bugs to fixed and also add some more features.
Bugs like
Gmail is not connecting in email.
Always crashes.
Please add one more app drawer beside sidebar you can take idea from TSF launcher.
Its the best app on the planet of earth.

Android version: 6.0
Rom: stock rom
Phone: Lyf water 11
Version: 1.4.4(installed now,testing)
Hmmm. I tested it for about two months on Android 6 and Android 7 and on my devices it works stably. The problems were on Android 8, but I fixed them in versions 1.4.3-1.4.4.
Can you take logcat immediately after the crash. If your phone is rooted it can be done with MatLog app (type "aio" in search bar).
Or at least describe in what situations app crashes.
Just came here randomly in a way... love the concept!

Loving the new update!
Updated to 1.4.6. All features are working now. Well done. Glad to support the app. Keep up the good work. I look forward to what's to come on this app.
Using: AIO 1.4.6 on Android 8.0.0 AICP nightlies with magisk root for my Nexus6P
Tapping the Bitcoin price graph should open up coinbase or any other Bitcoin app that we have : )
Also maybe add the ability to change exchanges
I love the design of this launcher but I need to be able to choose weather data providers like Weather Underground, DarkSky or AccuWeather (using API keys) and also use my own RSS news feeds. Is/will that be possible? With that included I would buy the premium version right away. Great works. With a launcher like this the the date feed options becomes very important.

You can use your own personal news feed by holding the search button then settings then head down to the news feed section and you will see the option to add a RSS url
Loving it so far! Already bought premium to support. It gives me that old Windows Phone feeling where I can see all my info from a glance. Keep up the great work.
Bought premium ! Well made and well thought !
Suggestions to improve it :
- choose another provider for the weather
- choose another crypto, not only bitcoin
