Sorry for the noob questions, I've been looking through the tutorials and FAQs for hours, and am still not quite sure, so bear with me.
1) I would like to get a Nexus 5 from my friend. She is on Sprint. I am on Verizon. Will this work?
2) I would like to root the phone. It is upgraded to Lollipop. Still root-able?
3) Currently watching the Google I/O and Android M looks nice. Will I be able to update Android and keep root? If I lose root, will the Nexus always be rootable with every Android version?
Thanks all.
1) The Nexus 5 doesn't work on Verizon. Sorry.
2) Yes. You can root via a custom recovery.
3) The OTA will probably fail if you're rooted. Besides, going from Lollipop to M I'd probably do a clean install instead of an update.

Hi all, I just get my Nexus S and gonna root it.
I'm not sure if rooted Nexus S can get OTA updates in the future? (Just rooting, without ROM flashing)
U will still be able to get updates as long as u dont flash any custom roms but u will probably lose root an have to reroot it. Thats what happened to me when i got the ota for 2.3.1
yup, you'll get all the updates, you'll just loose root after every update.

Just in case this is where you are coming from OP before your Nexus S (like me), it's similar to an iOS jailbreak where you jailbreak it, then a new update comes along and you loose the jailbreak when you upgrade.
But I don't even know if you had an iOS device Just thought I'd add this in
Hello,
I rooted my Note Pro 12.2 and now it won't update, says: Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available.
How can I update it? Should I install Xposed Framework?

If you don't have xposed framework installed, wiping cache from stock recovery might help. Or try to update using Kies 3, not via OTA.
But remember, you might lose root, and if you got Knox 0x0 still, there might be no way to root again without triggering KNOX flag, if samsung pushes some patched kernel update and you install it.
+1 to what Spere said.
I root every android device that I own and my #1 rule is never actively look for OTA updates after rooting. There's too much risk of problems. If updates come out, wait for factory images of the update to be posted and let more experienced users or developers test things first.

Root + OTA = a really, really bad idea. The first rule of Rooting, after 'RTFM', is 'DO NOT INSTALL OTA UPDATES.'

Note Pro 12.2 P900 rooted with stock rom
Guys, thanks for all the info you provide here. I'm a long time follower, first time poster and need some help.
I've recently rooted my new note pro 12.2 model P900 using chainfire's autoroot. I used ODIN and the image provided in chainfires zip file... root was successful. I did not flash a new ROM nor do I want one. I am probably in the minority, but all I wanted was root just to delete the bloatware. I am not interested in customs mods or ROMs. I want to stay on stock Samsung firmware, just minus bloat. I'm an operating system purist... I feel more comfortable with the stock/official op system.
I tripped knox, but I suppose I don't care. Would be great if eventually it can be reset one day. But whatever
I know you guys have said root + OTA update is a bad idea.... apparent I won't be able to do it anyway. I get that error message when I check for an OTA update from Samsung saying my device has been modified.
My question is how can I get the USA version of the current stock firmware and then the future versions of any updates FROM A TRUSTED SOURCE? Doesn't seem like I can get it from Samsung anymore . I'm afraid that if I just download a 1.5gb zip file from some fileserver on the Web I may get something that's not quite legit.
Also, is it because I am rooted, or because I tripped knox, or because I deleted stock apps that I get that message during the OTA check I tried to run?
Thank you!

Both http://www.sammobile.com/ and http://samsung-updates.com/ are reliable sources. I haven't checked if they actually have the firmware, though.

If you have changed the recovery or the structure of the system (for example removed syatem apps) the OTA will fail.
If you flash the stock recovery and reset or reflash a stock rom the OTA will complete and you will lose root
So I have a new shield tablet on the way, in the mail. I'm not sure yet if it will be sent to me on Lollipop or KitKat. It is the 32 gig, LTE variant.
If it is on KitKat, is it best to root it on KK and stay there or should I take the OTA up to Lollipop and then root it from there? Is the best bet to root and stay stock or should I look at some of the roms available? Have people found that the tablet handles emulators well like Reicast, FPSE and more?
If you want root your best bet is to unlock the bootloader. This can be done on kitkat or lollipop.

Is it done via the typical fastboot and then oem unlock?
Edit- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2399737
Yup. Typical bootloader unlock. Is there a preferred recovery most people like for the tablet? I know for one of my old phones (Rezound), you could use a few but devs preferred usually 1 out of the many. CWM is the way to go for us?
Lollipop root is independent of having root on KitKat or not. As of right now the only way to root is to unlock the bootloader, flash a temporary/permanent custom recovery and then flash the SuperSU. Being that the bootloader wipes the device I recommend doing it before you dig too into the tablet and load it up. Follow this guide and you should be golden ponyboy http://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tablet/development/root-root-lollipop-t2945044
Or if the tablet already has Lollipop on it then follow these instructions. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56888108&postcount=23
The LTE version will come with kk. They haven't pushed lollipop to the LTE version yet as it's pending carrier certification. I rooted and flashed recovery all without unlocking the bootloader. I followed the lollipop root instructions in the dev section. First you root kk, install recovery, flash the ota zip, flash the su zip, flash the rooted boot image then reflash custom recovery if you want. Im now running lollipop rooted with clockwork installed and my bootloader is still locked(follow the locked bootloader root instructions in that thread)

So you took yours up to Lollipop manually because the LTE version doesn't have the carrier approval yet?
Does lollipop introduce any headaches or anything to be aware of in comparison to KK? The tablet did get cleared for Grid correct?

Yeah I flashed it manually. Honesty, I can't tell you if it brings problems compared to KK.. haha I got the tablet yesterday and as soon as I powered it on I started updating and rooing it so I was only in KK for a few minutes so the only experience I really have with the tablet is on lollipop

I really prefer Philz. I love TWRP but I don't think there's a working TWRP recovery for the Shield tablet yet.

I will plan to do the same. I'm going to unlock/root it before I do any work on it so I don't lose anything during the wipes. Does the tablet handle emulators well like FPS and Reicast? My guess is their performance would be phenomenal on this device.
Just of the lollipop update not too major a problem, battery life seems a little bit worse for me....but I have a question what is that star icon beside my WiFi bar? Idk how to take a screenshot sorry I just got the tablet

Star means that you put the tablet into Priority mode - only notifications that you deem as priority will alert you.
I was given an S3 by my brother. I did a factory reset and after a few hours was given a notice that I an update was available. I tried three times to update my phone but with no luck. Contacted my brother he told me it maybe because he rooted the phone, but has no has no recovery on it. I also had problems setting up my gmail account but I did some research and saw I need to install Total Commander and insert a # in my files.

Correct. You can't take the OTA to 4.4.2 without first uprooting it. Keep in mind it's already on a locked bootloader and updating it again even limits the ability to put somewhat of a custom rom on it. The 4.3 update was also bootloader locked but there were more roms available with that update versus the newest one

I'd highly suggest not updating but it's your choice to do so. And people have indeed had success updating to 4.4.2 and keeping root. Personally I don't know how to do it as I never officially went past 4.1.2

Hello everyone,
Back in October, I had rooted my phone to install xposed etc. A little after that I received a notification for the stagefright update (i know that was a long time ago) and I ignored it (because of little time, I wanted to install cm13 but I never could find the time). Since marshmallow is a little more stable than lollipop, I would now like to shift to MM.
I distinctly remember trying to install the stagefright update (after rooting lollipop), and my phone went into a bootloop.
Two questions,
1. Does rooting not allow you to update your phone? Does it cause bootloop problems?
2. I want to stick to stock, so should I download the stock images? I'll be losing a lot of my data, I'll back it up but some of it is bound to get lost. Is it worth it?
Thanks in advance
You won't be able to update while rooted. Actually updating with a factory image is probably safer than taking an ota update. Personally, I think the update is worth it.

Your presumption that Marshmallow is more stable than Lollipop is... well... many people would argue that the opposite was true.
You should never take an update after rooting, especially if you have custom recovery installed... OTA's are designed strictly for purely stock, unmodified phones.
At this point flashing the factory images is preferred, you do this from a PC not the phone though. You could try to unroot (SuperSU has a full unroot option in it's settings), but the real key is to restore your stock recovery, there are threads here to show you how to do that.

Perhaps stability is not the real argument here... both are stable, as are most production ROMs, I have been using Marshmallow since early December and never had any real problems. But there are pros and cons to both and depending on your situation one may be better than the other, but I guess that wasn't really the point of this thread so I will say I half agree with your statement.

Nope, in fact, you can't relock the bootloader even if you want to. The bootloader lock state is not relevant to taking an OTA.
Thank you everyone
