I am starting a new topic, because I fear that I am not the only one that is going to have this problem - basically no mater what I do, I can't make the phone (idol 3, 4.7") to install apps to the sd card.
I tested two thing.
Method 1: There is a option in settings -> apps -> preferred install location. I chose "removeble SD card" there restarted the phone and tried to install something -> it goes striate to the tiny less-than-4-GB memory on the phone.
Method 2: Android SDK Tools - after method 1 failed I used the Android SDK tool, to change the default install location using CMD and the "adb shell pm set-install-location 2" command. The location was changed successfully (according to CMD), but when I tried to install something it again goes to the phone memory not the SDK.
Soo... after this didn't work I decide to simply move the apps to the SD card. I didn't have problem with Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft for example, but most of the apps actually don't move correctly. For example I installed Asphalt 8: Airborne and move it to the SD card. According to the phone, everything was ok (see attachment 3). Sadly the free space was suggesting something different. Checking with Link2SD Plus reviews a ugly picture - the major part of the app was actually on the phone (attachment 1). Removing the obb files resulted in the game downloading them again... on the phone.
So at this point the only logical solution for me seemed to use the "Link to SD Card" option in Link2SD. Sadly this doesn't work because "Link2SD could not obtain root access" (attachment 2).
I don't know... maybe I am missing something, but at that point the only other solution that I can think about is rooting the phone, witch is not yet possible. If you have any ideas - pls shere.
I am not entirely sure if the problem is connected to Android 5 or Alcatel did something to the OS, but after 3 days of using the idol 3 (4.7") I am on the verge of throwing it in to a wall.
This problem is the fault of Android.
I have the HTC m8 and the problem was the same and no solution before rooting and installing custom roms and special kernels and apps.
I know, very disappointing, but can be solved very easily when rooting will arrive..
Well, then - fingers crossed that we will get rooting solution soon.
Just realized that the same thing is happening with my phone. Looks like I'll use the phone for apps and the SD card for other data. At least my Google play music downloads were saved to the SD card
Sadly I am using Spotify and can't make it save on the SD card.
Same issue here basically, but with photos. I can view, but not delete files using apps such as Solid or ES File manager. They ask to be granted access, but it doesn't work. Native apps like the phone's task manager and Gallery app can edit and delete these files just fine. Other phones such as my S6 and M9 are running the same version 5.0.2 and I don't have this problem. Is it something inherent to this particular phone? Yes, rooting when it comes will solve the problem, but I thought most 3rd-party app developers had solved this issue by now. Why didn't any reviews indicate this problem before I made the purchase? Grrrrr.

You can probably blame lollipop....they've gotten more strict about apps being able to access the external sd card. System apps like Gallery have permission to access the external sd.
I just got a reply from the developer of QuickPic and he says it is definitely a bug they cannot fix. Oh well, don't expect to use any 3rd party apps with your SD card on this phone.

Have you tried using any apps after moving them to the SD Card?
I moved about 6 apps to the SD Card. Then I noticed that the widget for one of the apps on the SD card started displaying an error message (Soundcloud). I clicked on the widget and nothing happened. Decided to reboot my phone and then I realized that none of the apps I placed on the SD Card were accessible any longer. Had to re-download them all again to Phone storage.

You should not be moving apps that have widgets you plan to use. I verified my apps [ Amazon appstore, F-Droid, Lightning Browser, WPS Office etc...] just now and all are working fine...this is also after a couple of reboots since I moved them.
Yep, you can't more the app if you plan to use the widget. That's been normal for a long long time.

Why on earth would Google make it so files can't be deleted using 3rd party apps? That's just dumb. I use both ES File Explorer and QuickPik and this ruins the usability of these apps. hope this gets fixed in an update.
I hope they fix it soon too. This phone only has 10 gbs of internal storage. Putting photos and videos on an SD card is almost a necessity, not to mention music. Other devices running Lollipop 5.0.2 have fixed this. As I said, QuickPic, ES File Explorer work fine on my Galaxy S6 and HTC M9 as regards the SD card. I plan to write Alcatel tomorrow and maybe they will read this forum.

I need someone to check for me please that has this phone and an external sd card. If you would be so kind as to install the free app Quickpic or even the free app ES file explorer. I use ES File Explorer - and I got the same prompts while attempting to delete something from the external micro SD card. Honestly - I was not able to exactly follow what it was asking me the first time around. But eventually I was able to do what it was asking me to do ( although I couldn't repeat it if you asked me to !! ) and now I am able to delete files from the micro SD using ES File Explorer.

PROBLEM SOLVED!! My 64GB Micro SD card was formatted to exFat.
It needs to be formatted to Fat32. I used a guide from this XDA thread:

Nice info there. I did the same after seeing your post. I formatted my 128GB card with a 65536 byte allocation unit size which is the fastest. I tested the sd card with flashbench to see which was the fastest. After formatting I loaded a few test files. QuickPic works fine but ES File Explorer still does not. I will delete the data and reinstall the app and see if that works. Right now I'm copying all my music back over to the card which will take a while.
ES File Explorer still won't delete from the SD Card. I cleared the data, uninstalled and installed again. When I delete a file (picture) I do not get the option to select the SD card. Any other solutions?

If QuickPic now will delete from the SD card, so should ES File Explorer. While this was going on, I downloaded 2 additional file managers (Solid and Root Explorer) and they too wouldn't delete from the sd card. Once I reformatted my card, all 3 file managers were able to get permission and delete the files including ES. My only suggestion would be to try reformatting again and if still not working, if you have one, try another card from a different manufacturer. Since ES File Manager now works for me, it should for you too. Let us know if you sort it out. Root Explorer is a very good file manager, but costs $3.99. (Root is not required with the latest update despite the name).
I tried Solid and it didn't work. Then I tried a couple other generic ones and still nope. Then I tried Astro and it worked. I went back to Solid and it worked. Then went back to ES and it worked. Damn so strange but glad it's working now. Thanks for the help.

I recently bought a 16GB card for my G2X, and I started downloading more of my music directly to the phone. The problem is, I can't seem to figure out how to move my music to the External SD. I tried to use Astro, but when I selected the Amazon MP3 folder and tried to copy it to the External SD, I got a move error.
Now that I look further, I can't seem to do SQUAT with the external SD. I see it listed in SD and phone storage, but I can't move anything to it with Apps2SD or with the native GB app manager. Am I just missing something?
Are you rooted? If so, try using a Root File Explorer, such as SUFBS or Root Explorer.
I am not. Do I really need to root to use that external SD slot?

No, but I just figured, you'd be able to have SU Access, hence, more permissions in Android to move files.
Just try a different file manager from the market. I always had trouble with Astro when moving files to the external sdcard. Anttek File Explorer and Super Manager are two good ones and they're both free.
First thing you do is unmount you external sd card in the sd card settings of the phone and then take it out right away after it says unmounte dof corse then reinstall it and wait till it is done scanning it then see if that works. If not then I would try a different card one that you know works in something else and also try that on in a different device like your pc and see if it workes there this way you can determin if the card is broken or if the phone slot is brokem and if the phone seems to be broken I would try a factory reset.

Just moved from a 8 GB to a 32GB card. And cannot use it...
First I unmounted the old SD card on the phone, and put in the new, unformatted 32GB. I then choose to format it in the phone. Its a Galaxy S GT-9003i with firmware I9003XXKPN v2.3.5
It formated fine. Then I unmounted the new card, plonked in the old card and connected the phone in USB mode to the Macbook. I also connected the newly formatted SD card via a card reader, and it promptly showed up, with the correct free space (although there was a directory on it already called LOST.DIR)
I then copied all apps from the phones 8GB SD to the 32GB card, using the laptop (drag and drop). This also went fine and without a glitch. I then shut down the phone, swapped out the SD cards and booted the phone on again. As expected, it went to do the usual Scanning USB memory. It completed. The space appears to be taken up, but all apps that are on that USB are inaccesible. Their icons grey Androids with a small SD logo in the bottom right corner.
All other apps (the ones on the phone) work fine. The SD card can be used to copy files to on the computer and to take pictures...
Phone is not rooted.

Have you tried rebooting your phone? If it still does not work, try to unmount your SD Card via settings and then wait for it to successfully unmount and then mount again

Thanks, but I canot make sense of this. Firstly all apps on the old SD card will never fit onto the phone (8GB, vs 2GB space), and secondly elsewhere online they always talk about copying files to the new card and then inserting that instead of the old one....

When apps are moved to the SD card, it isn't entirely moved to the SD card. Only part of it is, that's why when installing apps the space for apps still decreases. Therefore you should use titanium backup or similar backup programs to move the applications.

Thanks,I had a look at titanium backup, but it requires root access (my phone has not been rooted). I really dont think one should need to root their phone to move from a small to a larger SD card without having to re-install all apps from scratch...!?

Without root you will not be able to backup data(AFAIK)

OK, so I rooted the phone and used Titanium Backup. It created a backup file on the phone memory. I thought, voila, I am good then, popped in the new SD card, formatted it, and did the restore from Titanium Backup... but:
still getting a lot of greyed out files in the application folder and on the home screens... I really cannot believe all this work is needed to swap out SD cards from a smaller to larger capacity! what a pain in the •••

I have the same problem to, just backed up my old 16gb card to my pc, installed and formatted a new 32gb card in my S4 and copied the data back over and all the apps that are on the sd card are showing up grey.
Ok, after a quick google, i've found that making a clone of the card and then copying the clone to the new card works
you can use HDD-Raw-Copy-Tool to do this (you'll have to google it as I don't have enough posts to post external links)

Thanks! Yeah that works perfectly! (Apparently there are some "secure" folders in the SD card that start with a period, and the contents do not get copied at all. Those hold the apps and data.) However after using HDD-Raw-Copy it will create an exact replica of the smaller SD card on the larger one and the larger one will appear to be small too, so you must resize your partition or you won't gain anything, your new card will be exactly the same as the old one! You can use MiniTool Partition Wizard home edition which is free to do this: partitionwizard.com :good:
I had the same problem but I was able to fix without extra software. Took old card out of my phone and installed both externally via flash readers to my pc and copied files from one to the other. View hidden files is turned on just in case any hidden items is also copied. This work great for me all apps are accessible now. Hope this helpped

There are two ways described to do it successfully:
METHOD 1 uses the xcopy (or xcopy32) command in a Cmd Prompt windown on Windows. The /h switch used on the command allows the hidden and system files to be copied!
METHOD 2 uses a straight copy from old SD card to the new SD card (or from old SD card to folder on computer, then from folder on computer to new SD card) using the simple drag and drop on Windows. BUT YOU MUST HAVE WINDOWS EXPLORER CONFIGURED TO SHOW SYSTEM AND HIDDEN FILES!
Just to be clear, the solution to the problem is trivial. You are simply copying ALL the files from one SD card to another. There is absolutely no reason that copying ALL files from one SD card, including the complete file structure, to another SD card should not work. Your phone can't tell that you switched SD cards. It only knows the files and file structure it can see on the SD card and if they are EXACTLY the same as they were before the switch, your phone should work exactly like it did before the switch except now it will see more free storage space on your larger SD card (which was probably your goal in the first place) AND your phone may possibly even run faster by accessing the data much faster if your new SD card is a faster class of storage media.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO ROOT YOUR PHONE OR INSTALL ALL KINDS OF CRAZY APPS ON YOUR PHONE OR SOFTWARE ON YOUR COMPUTER TO DO THIS!!!
BUT, the key is that YOU MUST ALSO COPY ALL THE HIDDEN FILES and there are lots of them on Android! Everytime I hear of someone having a problem with switchinging to a new SD card, it is because they did NOT copy the hidden files OR their SD card was not properly formatted (FAT32) for the phone.

so I've never run into this before and I've been modding smart phones since they were invented, so I'm sure someone else will run into the same issue, thought I'd share the answer:
Edit the file at:
system/etc/permissions/platform.xml
to add <group gid="media_rw" /> in the following location like so:
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_r" />
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
<group gid="media_rw" /> </permission>
Save the file or copy it back to the original location overwriting the original and reboot the phone, TiBu will now show folders on the external SD card as writable.
This is a general problem for all kitkat devices on 4.4.2 as Google butchered sd permissions. I had this same issue with my S4.
If you're rooted running xposed, you can download the module "Kitkat SD card full access". This will fix writing to the SD card. (For titanium, camera, etc.)

I just came over to an LG G3 from a Note 3, which I had upgraded to KitKat. Nothing on the Note 3 (Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, etc) would write to the external SD card. On my G3, they all write to the SD card without any problem whatsoever; I can use Root Explorer to rename files, for example. and I couldn't do that on my Note 3. I did nothing to the G3 except root it, and install/change my system font (oh, I installed G3 TweaksBox too, but had write access to the SD card prior to that).
Anyone know why I have write access to the external SD card on the G3, when I didn't on my Note 3? I thought this was a problem across all KitKat devices.
I'm just curious as to why this might be, that's all.

It does not do it for me. I have tried
a) SDfix from the store
b) This module
c) Another Xposed module (Handle SD storage)
So far they all fix the SD card access for things like camera but TiBu stubbornly refuses to budge.

I don't mean to grave dig but I'm having the exact same issue as you. I've tried the manual fix where you edit platform.xml via a root explorer and the SDfix apps from the store. Still no luck. TiBu still says insufficient storage and no folder write permisssions.

Go to Settings/Apps/Titanium Backup and clear cache. Open TB, select menu/preferences/backup folder location and press detect!. With the manual fix or apps, TB should now detect the external SD card.

It can detect the external SD card, it just can't write to it. Since it can't write to it, whenever I try to perform any batch action, an "insufficient storage" error comes up. I've attached a screenshot.

Use the back key to jump to external SD card. See pic below. You want sdcard1. Press on sdcard1 to select. Storage/emulate is internal sdcard.

Ok, I think you must be confused with what I'm trying to say; TiBu recognizes the external SD card, but cannot write to it because of the lack of the permission. This is an issue in KitKat, as I've said I've tried the manual & app fix but TiBu won't recognize the fix. Since it cannot write to the SD card, it returns on a "insufficient storage" error on any batch action that I perform...

I'm not confused, you are. I'll let someone else help you. Your screen print shows you are using the internal sdcard. Is your external sdcard write locked?

Yes my external SDcard write permissions are locked. I've added the permission to platform.xml by doing this:
The simple solution, if you're rooted, is as follows:
1. Using a root-enabled file manager, navigate to /system/etc/permissions and make sure you have mounted the file system r/w.
2. Edit platform.xml and find the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.
3. Add an additional group definition for this permission...<group gid="media_rw" />
4. Save the changes to the file.

but it still doesn't work. I've also tried patch apps like the SD KitKat fixer which was successful BUT TiBu does not recognize the changes. My platform file has the permission present yet TiBu refuses to recognize it. Sorry for being so blatant, I'm just extremely frustrated.

in your picture it clearly does NOT recognize the external SD since 'external_SD' is not listed under /storage
the problem isn't the permissions fix, the problem is the phone doesn't see your sd card
I went to Wal-Mart and picked up a 64GB SD card. I just purchased the tablet yesterday and rooted it using towelroot but that's all I've done. I put the SD card in and it's recognized and showing the correct available space. I'm able to create a file using ESFile explorer but I can't do anything with it. I tried a couple torrent clients to download files to the SD card and it keeps saying unable to write to folder or that it's write protected. When in file explorer I can create a file and under properties it does show it's able to be written to. I also have downloaded and tried the kitkat SD card fix app. I've gotten pretty frustrated with it so just did a complete factory reset and going to start from scratch. I was able to move apps to SD card using an app but that's all I could do. I'd really like to put any/all downloaded apps and files on the SD card since I only have a 16GB version.
Any ideas what I can do?

Well just an update after doing a factory reset everything seems to work now, of course i get to download everything again. I think it might have had something to do with the OTA update. After doing the factory reset it kept the update. Now I can freely move to and from the SD card so all is good.
FYI, since you are rooted I would suggest installing the Xposed Framework and then install the "HandleExternalStorage" module, the KitKat update cripples external SD card access so file managers, emulators, and the like can no longer write to the SD card. Installing this module re-enables external SD card read/write access for all applications, it is not the device. There is also an app on the Play Store call 'SDFix: KitKat Writable MicroSD' which accomplishes the same thing, however the Xposed module is much safer as it can be enabled and disabled at will. Simply install the module, enable it, and that's it.
Hi, I have a Huawei P8 lite. I'm having some issues with the SD card on my device. I have rooted the phone and installed an unofficial build of Lineage OS 14.1. Some time ago, I started to have troubles with apps that want to write to SD card. Note that this didn't happen before. My phone seems to be unable to properly give write permissions on the SD card to apps. You know how you need to "Select SD card" on apps in order to give permission? Well, that window doesn't pop up at all on my device, therefore I can't give permissions to apps. Whenever an app tries to write to it, it freezes and then crashes. I've tried many different file explorers and all of them crash when writing to the SD card. Read access is fine, music apps are able to see and reproduce my music which is stored there. I haven't found much info on the topic, I modified the "permissions.xml" file that you can find on the system partition to no avail. This doesn't happen with my PC. My PC is able to read and write to the SD card both inside and outside the phone. Any clues on what I might do?
