Can't boot into recovery - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can't boot into recovery using volume down + power button, the only way I can access TWRP is if I choose "reboot into recovery" in advanced reboot options when I'm in the OS. My TWRP version is 2.8.6.0, and I'm running official CM12.1 nightly. Also, whenever I boot, notification light doesn't light up, which it should do because I have a custom recovery installed.

How are you implementing the button combination? A lot of people get it wrong. You need to hold volume down, and then power (so you're holding them together), when the phone reboots and you see the OnePlus logo you need to let go of the power button but keep holding volume down until you reach the recovery. If you keep holding the power button when you see the OnePlus logo the phone will just keep rebooting over and over, this is where a lot of people get it wrong.

Thank you! It worked. What confused me is that on my old phone the combination is different (Volume UP + Power), and the absence of LED indication of where I'm booting (my old phone would show orange for system & purple for recovery).
Thanks!

That's normal, the button combos can be different on different devices.

Preparing to use a custom recovery and write_raw_image/flash_image

In preparing for the official EVO release, where all us regular ppl will finally get the phone, have a few questions which there might be answers for or there might not yet be.
I know toast posted he is running a custom recovery.
What custom recoveries will work on the EVO? Will all the currently available recoveries need to be updated/modified to run on the EVO?
In creating an update.zip to flash partitions (load a new boot.img) through the custom recovery, is there a flash_image binary (samsung moment style) or are there commands, with partition information hard coded into the recovery, like write_raw_image ? If both exist, is there a preferred method?
I'm curious how we even get to a stock recovery on this phone...any idea?

Turn off (completely). Hold volume down while powering on, and keep holding it until the bootloader screen appears. Use volume keys to navigate up/down in the list, and press power button to select "Recovery". It'll take you to a black screen with a red icon in the middle, and shows no menu -- but if you press all three buttons (vol down+vol up+power), it'll show a recovery menu that we're all used to, with blue letters.
This will only work to apply a signed HTC update.

Isuues entering recovery

Hi,
When i press vol down + power button, the oneplus logo appers and then the phone goes off instead of recovery.
I'm using TWRP, Unlocked bootloader, latest CM11S with update cm recovery disabled.
From the power menu i can access the recovery with no issues.
Fastboot combination (vol up + pwr) works fine.
Any ways to resolve this issue? Someone else had this issue maybe?

It's all about timing, once you see the OnePlus logo, let go of the power button.

Thank you for fast replay and support, pressed the thanks button as usual
Yeah if you keep holding the power button it'll force a hard power off I did the same thing when I first started as I kept reading "hold volume down + power button" it didn't say let go of power button lol.

[Q] Titanium backup issue

I accidentally froze, by my mistake, all my apps with titanium backup, now my Phone is re booting itself after the message "optimizing x app of x"
I'm not able to reboot in recovery neither safe mode but only in fastboot but I'd like to avoid flash stock and restart from scratch, suggestions?
Even to save /sdcard
Thanks in advance

Why?
Shutdown phone from any screen by holding power button for 10 sec (or it turns off). You can do it also while it is optimising apps, does not matter now.
Then hold Vol down+ Power to boot into recovery.
What he said. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to shut it off by holding the power button and then boot into recovery. If you are already doing this then it's probably a case of using the button combo incorrectly (lots of people do). You need to hold volume down, then power (so you're holding them together), then when the phone begins to boot and you see the OnePlus boot logo you need to let go of power but keep holding volume down until you reach recovery. If you keep holding power after seeing the boot logo the phone thinks you just want to reboot again.

Thanks guys, maybe due to panic, cause I need phone and was not at home, I did the button combo incorrectly,
Booted in TWRP and wiped /data did the trick, then reinstalled TiBu and restored all apps

GT-P5110 unable to reboot directly to recovery after twrp installation

full stock, unrooted, GT-P5110
... connect to odin (3.12 PC)-> uncheck auto reboot -> install twrp -> PASS -> unplug cable from usb
but all I seem to be able to do is reboot into system.
I :-
hold power button for 1 sec, 2 secs, 3 sec.... trying to just turn it off (instead of reboot)
hold vol down + power button,
hold power button + tap volume down,
just hold vol down,
tap power button (does nothing), only long press restarts.
hold power button till screen goes black and then hold vol down + tap pwr button
hold power button till screen goes black and then hold vol down + hold pwr button
hold power button till screen goes black and then hold vol down on its own
search forum
pull hair out
type this
each time reinstalling twrp
any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
thanks
To reboot to recovery you need to hold volume UP + power.

well that's strange, as, on my device, from off:
Volume UP + power takes me to download mode... I have done this several times and it asks me to confirm by then pressing down.
AND, from off
Volume DOWN + power takes me to recovery.
and doing a search, via google and xda all agree with me.
.. but thanks
I never said I couldn't get into recovery... I cannot get from odin into recovery without it first rebooting and therefore wiping my flash.
edit: So I tried it anyway, and got back into download mode, which in a way is kinda good news as, my logic, if I can get back into download mode from a reboot then I should be able to get into recovery from a reboot.
Same same but slightly different

I am having the exact same problems and tried exactly the same things. I am just not able to install twrp because of this. ( I read that it overwrites the recovery with the stock one when you are not going straight into recovery mode after installation) I am stuck at the “Samsung Galaxy note 10.1” screen if try to go straight into recovery.
What is strange though is that with my device: VOLDown (towards the power button) + Power button takes me to download mode and the other combination supposedly to the recovery mode.
This is so frustrating. Done this so many times with other devices but this one just does not give up… I just want to get rid of all bloatware and other crap…..

I've given up, for now, tried every combination I could think... I have a sneaky feeling it must be rooted first. It is the only thing I haven't tried doing.
I am now trying to root it first

I am currently doing just that! Using the files from autoroot . chainfire . eu (can not post links yet haha) . I will let you know how it went!
UPDATE:
It worked! I rooted my device first. After that I flashed my recovery via the TWRP app. I also must say that my device is the GT-N8010 (p4notewifixx). I got confused of all the different models. Still I think it will work with your model aswell! Good luck!

Download mode

Hello.
What kind of combination of keys enter the "download mode" mode?
Vol down plus power does not work on the off U12 +, and under the system it even diminishes in dignity despite pressing "power".
Vol UP and power also does not work.
Boot to Bootloader and than select Download Mode with volume buttons (working for me).
From system you can try:
adb reboot download

Since u12+ has no physical button, and the edge sense doesn't support combine key,the method to enter the bootloader is special.
STEP.1 Press POWER button for 10s to hard reboot, you should feel a long vibration.
STEP.2 When you feel the vibration, press the VOL DOWN button immediately.Keep pressing it until you enter the bootloader.
STEP.3 Use VOL UP&DOWN to switch,POWER to enter

Thank you, for me step 3 is VOL UP. I tested it again and it is confirmed.
An other method for me is POWER OFF and then restart with POWER BUTTON pressed until vibration and then press VOL UP.

Good question. I am missing a twrp developing thread as there are already guys testing, but they only posted in the ordering threads:crying:
It works a little bit different on all treble A/B enabled devices. Those got two boot images, boot_a and boot_b, and don't have a recovery partition any more, as it got incorporated into the boot partitions, and is thus sharing it's space with the kernel. All previous device as well as treble A-only ones still had a separate recovery partition. But that very fact changed with such devices as the U12+ which got full treble support with seamless updates.

Has anyone succeed to run the stock recovery?
After booting in recovery mode I see a red triangle and cannot get any further. Power+VolUp and any other key combinations seems doesn't work.

The haptic keys don't work in combination, only one-at-a-time, so there must be some other way.

Lol, I take it this is your first Android phone? That's the normal stock Recovery. As it was said before, combination of buttons do not work. In Bootloader and Download Mode the volume buttons are switching selections and power selects the highlighted option.

On the older HTC's you could hold volume up and down then press power to enter the stock recovery options. I remember doing this with the M8 I think, it's been quite a while. Lets see if I remember how to embedd images, lol
Nope, lol

Yes I understand that part for combo buttons to enter recovery, bootloader and download. Now it is power down and restart holding down volume down button. However there is nothing to do while in stock recovery.

I didn't explain fully, my bad. When you accessed the stock recovery with the red triangle with the exclamation mark, that's when you held power down, up and press power to access the screen shot I attached before. Those were the stock recovery options.
It's irrelevant at this point since I don't think they include those options anymore for the newer stock recoveries. I could be wrong though.
I haven't tried to boot into the stock recovery in years so I haven't checked if it was included in the latest phones. I'm supposed to get my 12 today, I'll try to play around and see if it's included in this one, but I'm not holding my breath.
Edit: I love your themes BTW.

This works on all HTC devices prior to 12+. The question is only about the subj phone.
Easiest way - From powered off state, hold Vol down button and connect the usb cable to either power outlet or a PC, will boot to download/recovery/ etc .

There is no problem to boot into FastBoot mode and then choose any other option: Download/Recovery/System.
The issue is that I can't pass Recovery Red Triangle. HTC support also recommends to hold Power while pressing VolUP, but this does not work on U12+ with the haptic buttons.
