I'm not sure if YouTube got updated but I used to be able to listen to videos in the background without having to be in the YouTube app but as of today I can no longer do that. Did you YouTube removed this feature? Is anyone else having this problem?
One option with the S6 is to use multi window by dragging from top corner to opposite bottom corner. I have never used YouTube in the background, not too sure about that functionalty.

I think that feature is only for Google Play Music subscribers, not sure if you used to be one of those. I'd do what shook187 says and drag it as far to the bottom corners as possible as a workaround.

Since the new Youtube App was released (with the minimize video feature), I can't for the life of me figure out how to get to the Video info screen to upvote/downvote or read comments. Both arrows just minimize the video and tilting the Shield sideways does nothing.
I rolled back to the previous version of Youtube and if I tilt the Shield sideways, I can get to that screen and read comments, see related videos, etc. From the video itself, I can like/dislike using the menu key in the top right.
I'm sticking with the old version for now, but does someone know something I don't? Am I missing something with the new version, or is it pretty much impossible to do anything besides WATCH the video?

have you set the Shield to auto-rotate in the settings?
issues i've HAD with youtube, is that it doesn't stream well connected to some wifi. like at my work, i can't really run HD. Or if tethered to my phone, streaming will keeping trying to buffer every few sec/min.

It's definitely on because it rotates with the older Youtube app.

but the new app won't rotate? i've noticed, rotation on Shield doesn't work very well...i'd have to kinda tap the whole device to get it to acknowledge. Lemme try it right now.

Odd. Mine wouldn't do that last night until I rolled back to the previous version of Youtube. I will have to try again.
I always watch youtube videos with the youtube app. Lets say i click on a channel and i click on the "all videos" tab to see all videos from the channel and scroll down, and then click on a video and make FULLSCREEN, no matter when i turn the s6 or click on the fullscreen button, then i am always at the beginning of the list!! also not there where i scrolled, im at the start of the list again BUT ONLY WHEN I VIEW A VIDEO IN FULLSCREEN, even when its only for 1 second. But when i view the video "normal" also not in fullscreen im there where i scrolled before!!! Is there anyway to stay where i scrolled before after i watched a video fullscreen???

So as the title says, I'm unable to play in background videos in Youtube RED, I double check that I had the suscription active and the right settings in the Youtube app and it simply doesn't work. This is happening on my S7 G930F firmware version U1DQB1.
Did someone got this error too? and how did you guys fixed it?

Coming from an iPhone 7 Plus, I used the feature of YouTube playing in the background on a daily basis.
On Android I start playing a news clip or song then tab out to my web browser or stop watch, or any other app, and the media goes off.
How do I keep YouTube playing the background ?
The only way on YouTube app is by having YouTube Red subscription. It's a feature for red on Android. Others could point something out but from what I've checked and seen when using YouTube is by YouTube Red.

Not sure that its possible without root and xposed. Xposed hasn't been updated to work with Nougat yet though and that could still be some time away unfortunately. Might just have to live with it as is for the time being.
Thanks for the replies. I recall on previous Android phones that are rooted I used that Xposed module. But Xposed isn't compatible with Android N and the S8+ is locked down no root anyways for me.
Dang, that's unfortunate. YouTube Red might be your best bet then. Depends on how much you want it and whether you're willing to pay a monthly subscription to get it I suppose.
Sometimes I use the multi window feature to watch YouTube videos while using another app. It is a bit of a pain though if you just want audio as the minimum window size is still 1/3 of the screen.
I've tried a few apps that claim to play YouTube videos in the background but none of them worked very well.
There a app call OG YouTube somewhere in xda that have playback.
Try swapping top corning down to make the screen smaller. You can still hear and see the video and also move the smaller screen anywhere you want.
Use Firefox browser. It let's you play YouTube in background or screen off

Can you explain how it works on iOS? It seems crazy to me that YouTube requires you to pay a monthly subscription fee for background play on Android, but offers it for free on iOS.
If you mean playing within a web browser, and then going to another tab of the browser, I think Firefox for Android allows you to do that. If, instead, you mean the YouTube app itself, then you need YouTube red or some other (probably unsanctioned) method.

On my iPhone 7 Plus, I was using some program called 'ProTube' on stock iOS, not jailbreak or anything;
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/protube-for-youtube/id931201696?mt=8
I could start a video, and then move to do something else, and it would remain playing in the background until I manually closed it down. I get so used to it, and really liked it, now it's a shock not to have something like it on Android.

Yep you have to download the APK. They stopped support so the latest APK would be the last one you can use.
So you have to search XDA as the website took down the download links for OGYoutube.
The app still works without problems and should be a while until YouTube updates something to make it obsolete.
The lat update is OGYoutube 3.5.
Only thing is that you won't have the crop to fit. If in case you used it.

I couldn't get it to work at first either. Try going to options in Firefox and check "Request desktop site". After doing that I was able to return to the home screen with the audio still playing in the background. It seems to work with the screen off as well! :good:
Go to Youtube app, play video then turn off screen with the power button (just a click). Video will pause. Click on power button again and youll see time on top. Swipe the time left or right and youll see the youtube play button . Click play and it should work. It will not work any other way if you want to text or call or be on your phone but it will if you want to hear music and conserve battery. This is on my S8+ .....PS make sure your Pandora or any other music app is off.

You can't do this on snapdragon versions, which is what op has.
You have to choose desktop mode in the Firefox browser. I know how you feel I switched from iPhone as well
og youtube works like a charm
....open in editor mode? The wife’s is the same and the only way open videos so that you have the usual controls is to click the three dots on the bottom right and chose open in video player.
I’m sure it only happened since the last update. If i need to use the editor I will switch to it but that is rear. Can it be forced to open in player at the start?
Best regards,
Considering there are no replies at all, I may not have explained the problem properly.
When I click to open a video, it opens as the first picture. I then have to click the 3 dots on the bottom right to open it in video player (picture 2), that takes me to picture 3. I never before had to go through these steps before, it always used to open in the video player first. Am I the only one with this problem?
Hope someone can help.

I'm trying to understand, why you opening videos via Gallery app.
(i presume it's via Gallery app)
Have you got the Samsung Video Library app also installed.
You have to, to view videos directly.!
Link...
Samsung Video Library - Apps on Google Play
You can browse and play video content.
play.google.com
All you do is, open video directly from this app. Even hover S pen over video to get preview video.
See screenshots
Good luck.

The reason for that is because I always opened it from galley and it had, till recently, opened in video player, which is Samsung Video Library. Also, if you have any videos in the secure folder, you have no choice of opening it in video player unless you go through the extra clicks. That is the reason for looking somehow to force videos to open in Samsung Video Library from gallery as it used to do. Hope that makes sense.
Thank you to taking time to answer.

Thanks for explaining. I understand.
For me the Samsung Gallery app (video)
is now intended (actually been, quite some time now) if you either want to edit a video or set a video as Lockscreen wall.
Bottom line,
as i see it Samsung does not actually see Gallery app, as video player, as such....anymore.!
Only linking it (hiding) access in Gallery app settings.
So your choice is,
either use the Samsung Video library or bear the extra taps.!
Good luck.
