Can I use towel root? - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got my sprint galaxy s5. Since lots of root method are outdated, I was wondering if I can use towelroot with what I currently have without tripping knox.
My galaxy s5 is currently on android 4.4.4.
The kernel is dated November 2014.

Towelroot only works on pre-June 2014 builds. If I remember right you can Odin to an earlier build and use Towelroot.

Do you know where I can find directions for that? I found some post about this but no specific directions on how to actually do it.

Okay.
Steps:
1. Download odin3.09
2. Download NE5 Kernel and NK4 Kernel onto the computer.
3. Download towelroot to the phone.
4. Power down the phone and go into download mode (hold power + home + down vol button at the same time)
5. Open odin on the computer and connect the phone to the computer. The first square will be blue when connected.
6. Load the NE5 kernel on the AP and check the AP box. Start it and let it reset and remove the usb cable.
7. Power up the phone to the home screen and install towelroot and make it rain. (There will be some force close when it boots up after NE5 kernel is install.)
8. After that, turn off the phone and go into download mode again.
9. Go back into odin and load the NK4 Kernel in the AP slot and check the box. Then start it again.
10. Once done, it'll reset.
11. Go into playstore and get SuperSU app.

Can't finish installing Serendipity VII

I followed the following instructions on the serendipity website but after going through steps 1-12, I ended up with an unrooted Samsung GT-I9000 2.3.3 which cannot be rooted with SuperOneClick 1.9.5 (using both GingerBreak and psneuter). Since the last portion of the installation requires CWM Recovery, I think this might not work.
I am pretty sure that somebody is going to scold me for posting this thread with the answer right in front of me; I swear that I tried looking for somebody who had this same problem, but couldn't find anything remotely close.
On a side note, this phone is a Samsung Captivate. When I did the first instance of Odin, I pressed volume up and down at the same time to get into download mode. When I did it the second time (after it had been upgraded to the GT-I9000), I had to press power and down volume to get to Download, so I'm pretty sure the version of phone has changed.
I don't know what I did wrong in the instructions; I would have posted this to this thread, but xda-developers won't let me post to the developer section. I couldn't find anyone else with the same problem. Please help. Thank you. (This is non-vital, the phone still works and I'm able to send/receive calls, but for some reason the home button doesn't work. I can live without that for a few days)
Installation:
1. Download this package.
2. Open Odin3 1.7.
3. Select the PDA, PHONE, CSC, and PIT files in their correct spots.
4. Connect phone in download mode. Use a USB port that's on your motherboard (the ones on the back of the computer). Use the Samsung USB cable.
5. Ensure that Auto-reboot and Re-Partition are both checked. These have a tendency to change after plugging the phone in, so double check them.
6. This is where the bootloader will be flashed, along with stock Gingerbread. Hit Start.
7. Allow the phone to boot.
8. Close Odin3, and open a fresh one. Select Reorient_Kernel_1.1 in the PDA box.
9. Reboot into download mode (adb reboot download, or hold Vol Down + Power).
10. Plug the phone into the computer.
11. MAKE SURE RE-PARTITION IS NOT CHECKED. If it is, you'll soft-brick and have to start over.
12. Flash the kernel (hit start). Allow the phone to reboot.
~IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY ON A SAMSUNG-BASED GINGERBREAD ROM WITH BOOTLOADERS (NOT CM or MIUI), START HERE~
13. Place the ROM .zip (You know, the one you downloaded from the giant link up there) onto the SD Card.
14. Reboot into Recovery (adb reboot recovery, or Vol Up + Power).
15. Flash ROM with CWM.
16. Enjoy!
Note, you will get some popup at start about not having network time. Just hit cancel and pretend it never popped up.
if u did step 11 and 12 you should have the reoriented kernel installed and hold vol up+power to get into cwm recovery mode and choose install from zip option, choose the zip which should be on ur sd card before. then u can flash S7 .zip and wham ban thank you ma'am u got it done
There is a Serendipity sticky in the Q&A subforum where questions like this should be posted. Please use the sticky before starting a new thread in the wrong forum.

Restore to STOCK from MOAR V2.2 NE5

Hi guys.
So, I am running MOAR (android 4.4.2) on my GS5. I terminated with sprint, and need to return my lease.
I have a few APK's on this phone that I can't seem to find in the appstore - I took a helium backup of those and I hope I can restor them to my new Tmobile LG-G5.
But besides that -
I want to wipe/clear the entire phone and restore it to stock.
Tips? hints? walkthroughs?
Help!. Thanks.
:good::good::good:
the most solid way to fully restore to stock is to flash a tarball in Odin. Here is an OK4 based tar.md5 that will fit the bill pretty well. Im not sure how well versed you are in this kind of stuff, so forgive me if im telling you stuff that you already know.
1: download Odin here and the OK4 tarball here
2: run odin as administrator
3: inside odin, on the right hand side, click the button marked "AP" and select the tar.md5 file you downloaded
4: put your phone into download mode (press and hold vol down, home and power until it powers off then release power but continue holding the other 2. If your phones firmware doesnt force reboot with that button combo, then pull the battery out, put it back in, then hold vol down, home and power until it vibrates and release power continuing holding the other two. Both of those scenarios should bring you to a screen that warns you that you could break your phone if you continue)
5: Connect your phone via micro usb
6: let the drivers install on your computer
7: press start in odin
You should see a progress bar going on both odin and the phone and once its done, youll have a "factory fresh" ROM. Only thing left to do at that point is to delete internal storage and you should be good to go.
---------- Post added at 05:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:43 PM ----------
oh, those apks that you cant find in the appstore anymore should be in the root of the internal storage under system/app and the apk itself should be in the folder of the app youre looking for for instance google hangouts apk is in /system/app/hangouts/hangouts.apk
also, the odin restore will also flash a stock recovery, so before you do that stuff you should go into whatever recovery you use and wipe internal storage.
Hey thanks.
I'm about to do this. I just used TWRP to 'reset' the phone / wipe system data etc.
On Odin (3.10.7) options tab is a RTN for Sprint option. What's that? Do I need to check it? Auto Restart?

Damn my impatience.
So I did all this - used TWRP to wipe the phone / reboot into download.
Connected phone in download mode to odin
put the TAR.MD5 file in AP
Odin takes a minute or 3 to check this.
When ready, hit START (Options Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time are checked)
3:40 seconds later - PASS.
Phone, however, sits there with "recovery rebooting" in blue at the top left. 10 minutes now, nothing...

Any ideas? I don't want to end up owning this damed lease phone...
You booted to Download using TWRP, thats why it failed. Turn off the phone and do it as supposed. VOL Down + HOME + POWER.

Thanks.
I pulled the battery and rebooted to download, applied via ODIN a second time, and it failed.
Rebooted, phone said "update failed - attach phone to KIES and try again" - so I applied via ODIN > WIN!
I'm good to go now!
Thanks for all the help, really. Yes, I thought I booted to download cleanly, but you're right - my impatience I probably had TWRP boot me to download.
John
glad to hear you got it working!

S6 international root on official nougat?

Im on official nougat for the s6 (international UK). Warranty is expired, and samsung pay isnt in the uk, so i dont mind tripping KNOX, but if i can leave it un tripped, then it'll be better.
How would i root it? Do i have to instal TWRP? If so, can someone lead me to a tutorial that is legit, and shows me how to root/install twrp and root?
Are there any issues?
Thanks

Download SuperSU.zip file and copy it to your phone’s internal storage.
Install TWRP and Root Samsung Galaxy S6/S6 Edge Android 7.0 Nougat
1.Open Odin3 V3.12.3.exe that you extracted on your PC.
2.Enable OEM Unlock on your Galaxy S6 Edge or S6. To do so on your phone, go to settings > about device > tap the build number for 7 times to enable developer options. Get back to the settings and open developer options. Under developer options turn on “OEM unlock.“
3.Put your S6/S6 Edge in download mode now. To do so, turn it off completely. Now turn it on by pressing and holding Volume Down + Home + Power Key. Once your phone boots up, press the Volume Up key to continue.
4.Connect your phone to your PC now. The ID:COM box in the top-left corner of Odin3 should turn blue. This indicates that your phone is connected properly.
5.Now click the “AP” tab in Odin and select the TWRP recovery.img.tar file that you downloaded. It will take a second or two for Odin3 to load this file.
6.Make sure that your Odin3 looks like this. The only option ticked should be F. Reset Time.
7.Now you’re all set to flash the recovery. Just click the start button in Odin3 and sit back.
8.Once the process box above ID:COM box shows green light and flashing process is finished, disconnect your device.
9.Without rebooting the device, we have to boot into TWRP recovery now. To do this, press and hold Volume Down + Home + Power key on your device, as soon as the screen goes black, immediately switch the key from Volume Down to Volume Up while having the Power + Home Key pressed. This will take you to the TWRP recovery.
In TWRP Recovery, Swipe to allow modifications and then tap “Install > Locate the SuperSU.zip file > Select this file > Swipe to confirm flash > flash it”.
10.Once SuperSU.zip file flashing ends, reboot your device into system.
As it boots up, checkout the SuperSu in application drawer. Also install BusyBox from Play Store.
Verify root access using Root Checker.

[HELP!!] Hardbrick after installing TWRP

Hi guys,
So today i tried to install TWRP on my Galaxy S8+ with odin
after reboot it asked for somekind of reset so i did but TWRP wasnt installed.
I tried it again but before it rebooted i checked if TWRP got installed and still no TWRP
so i flashed it again without booting in to the phone.
Phone reboots.. well actually NOT.
its not booting up and keeps showing me the Samsung Galaxy S8+ text with powered by Android below.
So now i tried to flash the stock firmware again but odin keeps saying FAIL (DeviceInfo).
i only can get into download mode, recovery mode buttons doesnt work.
also tried it with Smartswitch & Kies but after downloading the firmware it wont recognize my phone.
Please someone help? i really dont know what to do anymore...
You can download Samsung Smart Switch and choose the emergency software recovery option. You'll loose everything on the phone but it sounds
as if you're already there.
It will ask for your phone serial and exact model no., then it will download the latest release and install.
Usually will work from the screen your on, but if a prob., boot into download mode.

What device model do you have?
I assume its a 955F or FD?
Please dont tell me you have a U version.
sent from my Note FE, S8 plus, S7 edge or S6
1. Download earlier firmware AQF7
2. Hold power, volume down and bixby button for download mode
3. Open Odin on your PC
4. Add the AQF7 BL and only this
5. Hit start and straight after this hold the 3 buttons in again power, volume down and bixby (this should fail at first and bring you straight back into download mode)
6. Now back on Odin spam the start button this time (this should flash the BL and have you sorted again)

This - you probably have the newer AQG5 bootloader, which TWRP doesn't support yet.
So follow the instructions above, flash back to the previous bootloader, the you'll be able to flash TWRP ok.

I had the same issue once before. What the fail device info. I think I fixed it by using the most recent update (I think). And messing around with csc files. All this was done half assed in desperation. Then went back to the unlocked firmware and stopped messing with it. Yes Smart switch didn't do crap. Use updato.com to obtain your firmwares

TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, I WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY SIDE EFFECTS OR ISSUES THAT COME FROM FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS
This is what I did:
1. Go to https://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ and pick your variant of the Note edge, download that autoroot file.
2. Go to https://odindownload.com/ and get the latest Odin.
3. Put your phone in download mode by pressing power, home and volume down buttons. Press volume up when shown warning sign. Now plug your phone into your PC.
4. Go into odin, click on AP, and select the autoroot file.
5. Now press on start, and let Odin fail.
6. Unplug the phone and now take out the battery, put it back in and follow the same instructions to get into download mode. Once in download mode, plug the phone in to the computer again.
7. Go to [29/03/17][twrp recovery][v3.1.0] and get the ".tar" for your specific model.
8. Flash that the same way as you flashed the autoroot, it should pass this time.
9. Unplug the phone and take the battery out. Use the power, home and volume up buttons this time to boot into twrp.
10. Now, you can go to the adb sideload section and sideload Magisk. I would also recommend you get some other ROM for this phone as I don't know how much magisk likes Android 6. Most ROMs on the Samsung Note 4 xda page have builds for the Note edge as well.
