[Q] Long text messages getting split - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got the Galaxy S6 a few days ago with Verizon. I'm using the samsung messaging app it came with, and noticed that every text that I receive from someone that is more than 160 characters gets split up, rather than sending as one long one or showing as one long text bubble, I'll 2, 3, 4 message notifications. It's not really a big deal, but it's a little annoying. However just today, a long text message was sent and I got 8 messages/8 notifications. And each message definitely had only 60 or 70 characters. Was this because it was so long that it was spit up into 8, but then why were they not split up into 160 characters? Any fix to this or explanation?

I've seen this, as well. I'll get messages like this:
(1/3)Hey, what's going on? Want to h
(2/3)ave lunch today? How about those NBA playoffs? What is the deal w
(3/3)ith the Big Gulp? I mean, who needs this much Mountain Dew?

I have also had this problem on several occasions. The most recent was when someone sent me a text that ought to have fit into one text, (88 characters), but was divided into two

I believe this problem originates with the sender of the message.
Old phones used to split up long messages before sending them.

Sms problem Xda 2

Hey all, since upgrading my rom to the 172187 from o2, i seem to have problems with my sms...
everytime i send an sms with less than 160 characters, it sends to the other person as 2 txt msgs....
any1 else geting this problem ? or know of a solution ?
thanks
Do you mean it sends the same message twice or that it splits the message into two?
watch the character counter, some xda's have a problem counting
the counter goes 1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ... thus when you actually already have 3 characters, the counter says 1. If this is the case for you don't go over 158 characters.
it splits the msg in 2.....
and it happens even if i use like 80 characters.....
i think it's because it's set to unicode they take 2 time the space of normal chars making the max sms size ½

Good thinking
Something to try then is from Inbox, go to Accounts->Accounts..., tap * SMS and then uncheck the Send SMS using Unicode when necessary option.
excellent work chaps....seems to have sorted the problem .....
thanks alot
if it comes back il repost ....

Annoying messages.

Im running 6.1 on my Acer M900 and every time I send a sms I get a 'USSD Notification' saying my balance AND a message saying the message was sent.
This is very frustrating and just need to know how to turn them off. These messages dont happen on my HTC Diamond.
I've got sms sent notification off and they still come up.
Thanks, Ben.
This suppresses all USSD messages that originate from the carrier, even those that you might request manually:
HLKM/ControlPanel/Phone
New value: SuppressUSSD := DWORD(1)
That key is already there I took it off and now I get 2 messages saying my balance. One at the top in a bubble called 'Phone' and one at the bottom labelled 'USSD Notifications. This is really odd
I think Ill stick with HTC on my next purchase.
Ben.

[Q] New to the Captivate, text message help

Hey guys,
As the title says, I'm brand new to the Captivate.
When I'm having conversations over text message, is there any way to make the incoming texts appear on my screen in the order in which I receive them? Right now all of my typed messages appear at the bottom of my screen, and if I receive a text I have to scroll all the way to the top to view it.
For example:
Friend: Test
Me: Response
Friend: Test
Me: Response
If messages were typed in this order, it currently appears like this on my phone:
Friend: Test
Friend: Test
Me: Response
Me: Response
Is there any way to change that? I love everything about this phone, but it's getting obnoxious having to scroll up 10 or 15 texts every time I receive a new one from somebody. Thanks in advance.
Honestly, the simplest fix is to use handcent or another third party messaging app.
Edit...I see you are brand new to the captivate.....you heard of the inspire? Might want to give it a thought.
Hmmm... It's certainly not supposed to be like that. My phone always showed the messages in the order I received them, so something is wrong and I couldn't find anything in the settings to change it. You might want to try Handcent from the market, there's a free version and it is EXTREMELY customizable. I mean, it's down right ridiculous how much you can customize every aspect of your SMS and MMS using it. Maybe that'll be a simple fix for your messages not appearing in order. If you decide to go with Handcent, make sure you turn notifications off in the stock messaging app or else you'll get two separate notifications each time you get a text, which gets annoying pretty quickly.
EDIT: I guess I type too slow, newter beat me to the punch
I get the a very similar (or even same) thing running Cog or stock. What I have noticed....this only occurs if your reply has the same time stamp as the received message i.e. if you receive a message at 9:46pm and reply to it within the same minute (in relation to your phone's time), also 9:46pm, your message will show out of order.
Hmm....now that I look over my messages...I have a MILD theory...
Messages are organized in chronological order, but the time stamps do not include seconds, only down to the minute. Afterwards, the system has to organize by something....so it goes to Name. My first guess would be if the message is sent from someone with name that comes before "Me" alphabetically, their message (send at the same minute) would appear first, and vice versa if their name is after "Me." Errr.....maybe it is by phone number, not name.......errrr....damn, that doesn't hold up 100% either now that I have looked even harder.....jeez.....only 1 message might jump up?
eh, I've just learned to live with it. Can't be too picky. Every phone has its little quirks. Just depends on which ones you want to deal with
I had the smell issue with either stock or handcent messaging apps. The problem to me was the time in my region being sent by the cell towers was off by about 70 seconds. When I would travel to another region of the country, I didn't have a problem.
I solved it with a program from the market called ClockSync (though I'm sure there are others) which sets the correct time on my phone.

[Q] Long Texts Turn Into Random Characters

No matter what ROM I flash when I send a long text that converts to MMS it turns into random garbled characters. It appears to send fine on my end but whoever I send it to gets an unreadable text. This happens with every ROM and with any messaging app I try. I'll attach a screenshot of what it looks like. Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks
Also...
I have tried multiple messaging apps such as Handcent and I get the same results. I'm aware that I can split the messages into multiple SMS as a workaround but I really just want it to convert long messages to MMS like it supposed to and not send them as garbage. Thanks.
Ummmm.....I could be wrong, but I don't believe that has ever worked??? Have had my ns4g for over a year and it has always had to split SMS......or at least I have always set it to split......
10....0011....10101
Ok, that's kinda what I figured. Thanks for the quick reply.

Slow sending text?

Is anyone else having problems with HTC's stock texting app sending messages slowly? For example, when I type out a message and send it, the message remains in the text box for about 3 seconds before actually sending which can be annoying.
Also, I've notice that new messages take a while to load when you open the message app. I'm thinking about using a 3rd party texting app. It's becoming annoying.

This has started to occur for me quite recently as well. No way can all three of our accounts be connected in some way...
