Update Failed - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an AT&T GS6 (SM-G920A). The new update isn't working for me.
I rooted it temporarily using PingPing root, since I wanted to use AdAway to modify the hosts file, and PingPong doesn't trigger the KNOX flash counter.
Anyway, I tried unrooting using SuperSU, but it just got stuck at "uninstalling", so I used root browser to manually delete SU and the SuperSU apk file. After that, I did a full wipe.
Anyway, it still isn't letting me update with the latest version. It says it is unrooted and KNOX is still at 0x0. However, in the Odin screen, one of the options DOES say custom. (the binary one is Samsung Official, but the other is Custom.)
So after looking around, I found out that flashing a stock MD5 will not trigger KNOX, so I figured I would try that. I found a stock GS6 MD5 and downloaded, but Odin said it failed the hash check. This was the same error I got when trying to update. (dafuq?)
ANyone know how to get my phone back enough to update? I might leave it that way until I decide if samsung pay is work giving up custom roms.

In the ping pong thread is mentioned that you have to Odin back to stock, let the OTA update run, and then re-root using ping pong again.

Yeah, I tried that, hence this line:
"So after looking around, I found out that flashing a stock MD5 will not trigger KNOX, so I figured I would try that. I found a stock GS6 MD5 and downloaded, but Odin said it failed the hash check."
Most places didn't seem to offer a stock ATT ROM anyway. I finally found one, but it seemed to say "REV_02" at the end. I gave it a try but it failed the hash check.
Thanks for the reply, though.:good:

OK, I was able to get the System back to official using the ROM I found.
Now it starts updating properly in that it gets to the loading bar.
However, it fails at about 25%. According to the log, I'm getting Status 7.

Try downloading the latest firmware from sammobile , flash it by Odin , then re-root with pingpong again , no need for OTA if the new firmware is there for donwload .

OK, I found out the problem. There are 4 files INSIDE the file I downloaded. I had to flash all 4 of them (Bootloader, AP, CSC, and something else). From there it worked just fine! I consider this solved! No knox trip, either!:good:
For future reference, I'll see if I can post a link to the ROM I used.
Found it in the OP here.
Or if the direct link stays up, try this direct link.
Remember to flash all 4 files using Odin (I would post a link but they keep changing). I used 3.10.

[Q] Unable to take 4.4 ota VRUNC1

I was rooted via saferoot but somehow lost root (not sure exactly how). My phone is currently pushing the 4.4 ota update but it generates an error every time I try to take it. I have ran root checker and it says I'm not rooted. Any reason why the update would error like this?

Is your Device Status "custom" in About Phone > Status ?
I'm having the same issue myself with the OTA failing. (Trying to get 4.4 myself!)
Still looking into a work around - we can't use Triangle Away to reset it due to a locked boot loader unfortunately, so we need a way to flash the official stock 4.4 rom... not sure if this is possible, again, to the locked boot loader.

I flashed that using Odin, which doesn't delete any of your data. Rerooted with towelroot, and installed supersu binaries.

Bummer I keep getting "<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)".
I've used ODIN before - uninstalled drivers, using updated ODIN.exe.. can't think of anything else I'm doing wrong.
Was hoping to have this squared away by now lol.
Edit: had to unzip the file. I'm a dummy.

Sorry for the late reply. To your original reply, yes I still have the custom unlock symbol on startup. It seems that you've had success with the odin method? I'm a noob with odin so is it the case that you can use odin when you've lost root, and just flash the linked filed here to get back?

SM-P905 new update

Did anyone take the September-october update?
(Italy / Nordic countries /switzerland/ slovakia/ poland/ portugal)
Pda- P905XXUANH3
I'm trying to understand if it messes up the towelroot or not.
Thanks.
I took the plunge, but Towelroot refused to work on the new rom. Apart from that the tablet started rebooting spontaneously every 15 mins or so after I installed the update.
Def NOT recommended to install it.
I had to downgrade to the previous rom using Odin and now I'm back to normal.
Hope that helps.

Another possibility could be to install H3, then flash xxuanc3 firmware, towelroot it without tripping knox and then reflash h3 firmware. A similar procedure works on s4, but unfortunately I'm not enough expert on firmware and odin stuffs, so I am not sure if there are possibilities to brick the device and how to prepare the extracted firmwares for odin flashing. I found some procedures that should work for doing that but nothing about a way to check in advance if such procedures are sure.
A developer should be able to do this, but, in wich part of the forum this can be asked?
.?

Regarding towelroot someone says ok, other say it doesn't work...

My device is rooted and I installed new update (KOT49H.P905XXUANH3) by flashing full ROM by odin, without wiping.
Now I'm experiencing random reboots (pretty often). The question is - is it because it was dirty-flesh or just new updated rom is not working properly?
Are you also experiencing such problems?

rooted NH3 with towelroot
Ok,
I successfully rooted NH3 with towelroot, acting as pointed out in my first post. The only problem I had is that once you load the XXUANC3 firmware you loose the wifi connectivity, obliging to rely on your provider's internet connectivity to complete the rooting proicess.
To remove the knox and update stuff I used a debloating script that in another thread for the sm-p905, but no other stuff, as this script was written for the previus version of the firmware.
No knox trip nor reboots, so far.

No WIFI after update
Hi Guys,

However, after today's update, it does not connect to WIFI nor it recognizes my WIFI name.
I don't know what to do.
Many thanks in advance.

- Check that developer mode is enabled
- Download and install Towelroot and supersu
- Shut down the tablet
- Reboot (Home Key + Volume Down + Poweron, then volume UP) in download mode and flash with Odin 3.07 or 3.09 the latest firmware (XXUANH3).
- Shut Down the tablet
- Reboot the tablet and flash only the Kernel of the previous firmware (XXUANC3)
- You loose the WIFI connectivity, so connect to the internet through your phone provider internet connection, then - Launch Towelroot and root your tablet, Then launch Supersu and disable Knox. The tablet may freeze at this point (didn't happen to me), but in any case you have to shut down.
- Reboot in download mode and flash the latest firmware (XXUANC3).
- At this point you're done, but, to avoid random reboots you have to completely remove Knox, something that you can do with several tools. I used a debloating tool for SM-P905 that I found in this forum.
About the Kernel files needed for this procedure, I tried to attach them to my posts, but it looks like I'm not yet enabled to do that (too few posts, may be).
To prepare them from the original firmware files I used a Windows script called TAR_MD5_PAKAGER, that you can find searching in this forum.
Hope that the above results clearer than my previous posts

[Q] Reliable root method for a P900 build BNK1?

I'm ready to root but virtually every email I see identifies problems rooting with the latest OTA updates. Even the experts appear to have a problem. Is there a reliable method that does not involve extensive after the fact troubleshooting.

Gatsrom thanks for responding. I gave it a shot and don't know where I am at. I am not rooted. I downloaded and installed Odin and following all the precautions I could find I downloaded TWRP and went through the installation process. Odin showed RESET then PASS. I did this twice and it passed both times. I also tripped knox (which I expected to do). When I boot into recovery there is no sign of TWRP. I go to the standard system recovery.
Did I need to be rooted before TWRP will work? If not, could you point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
Keith

Hmm let's see what we can do. If you are booting into stock recovery it's not flashing the recovery. You grabbed the recovery for the v1awifi right? https://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/v1awifi/openrecovery-twrp-2.8.0.0-v1awifi.img.tar
You put the tar file in the pda slot? It says successful (1/1) in the info/log window at the bottom?

Gatstrom, I believe yes to all of the above. I attached a file that shows the Odin screen (didn't take - screen readout below). The successful line says (succeed 1 /0 failed) The recovery file is correct. Odin 3.09 does not say Note pro. I have also tried Odin 3.09 from a different source with the same result. The other thing I can think of is after flashing and I take the usb cord from the phone my steps are to turn off the phone and turn it on to recovery with the three finger steps. Is their anything else I need to do at this point. Should I be in TWRP now? I find myself in stock recovery system and it gives me I think 5 options. I am just rebooting. Should I be using one of the other options.
I unzipped Odin with 7z. I am using an original samsung USB cable connected directly to the computer and I turned off antivirus before flashing. There is no indication that Kies is operating any services in the background. I also downloaded he latest drivers

I got it to work. On the TWRP thread at original development forum on page 48 or 49 there was someone with the exact same problem. Bigbiff told the user to uncheck auto reboot in odin and then to boot directly into recovery. I did and it worked. I was unaware that you could root directly from TWRP and a quick stop at the play store. I then loaded your debloated rom and I'll see how it goes once everything updates.
I am so F$%^King excited. I have spent scores of hours attempting to get this to work.
Thanks for all of your help (it helped)
Keith
Ya that was my next suggestion to not reboot and go into twrp directly. Let me know how the rom works. If you have any questions/bugs throw them in the rom thread. I'll see it quicker and it keeps problems and solutions centralized.
I would say give the xposed framework a shot. I put a list of the ones I use. They are incredibly useful.

Got replacement S7 Installed UK firmware - Service Provider stuck on KT 'twophone...'

My Samsung Galaxy S7 replacement arrived today. SM-G930F (UK) 32GB BLACK
- I wanted to remove the bloatware, followed a tutorial: https://theunlockr.com/2016/09/04/remove-bloatware-samsung-galaxy-s7-s7-edge/
- I then installed ADBoot, USB drivers, etc...
- However when using Odin3 to flash the 'Rooted Boot Image' it got stuck in a boot loop with the message KERNEL IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING.
- I kind of gave up rooting it by this stage, so I then figured I'd have to reinstall firmware md5 as it was corrupted? So I download the standard United Kingdom firmware 'G930FXXU1DPLT_G930FOXA1DPLT_BTU' Nougat mdf (as seen here) http://www.droidviews.com/download-official-android-7-0-nougat-firmware-galaxy-s7-s7-edge/
It seemed to work fine, except the keyboard was a little glitchy (the same letter would repeat itself when typing an email to sign in to on Google Play, fixed by removing predictive text). I eventually got all the apps set up etc, however finally to get a tapping on service provider brings up 'KT twophone service' and when I tap on it, it crashes. However my phone seems to be working fine with my service provider Giffgaff... so I'm very lost but feel sketchy about the whole this.
Does anyone have any idea what exactly caused this?
I had that problem too. It might be down to the firmware you have. I downloaded one and had that problem, so found another BTU firmware
Make sure you flash the 2 files that look like these.
Using ODIN
Flash CP (Your filename will look different).
CP_G930FXXU1DQC2_CL443934_QB5909108_SIGNED.tar
Flash CSC
CSC_OXA_G930FOXA1DQB1_CL10422490_QB12282417_REV00_user_low_ship.tar
Failing that, also flash BL
BL_G930FXXU1DQC4_CL10422490_QB12768203_REV00_user_low_ship.tar
(You might have to re-flash TWRP and Root if you want them.)
Do not flash HOME CSC
HOME_CSC_OXA_G930FOXA1DQB1_CL10422490_QB12282417_REV00_user_low_ship.tar
Also, wipe, factory reset. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I managed to Flash AP, CP, CSC, and BL. That's where I went wrong. All tutorials seem to only state AP forgetting everything else, must be unique to Samsung?
Anyway I got it working. Problem is that with a rooted phone Snapchat and Pokemon Go don't work, they can detect the root. I got a workaround working for Snapchat but not Pokemon.
So I decided it's not worth the effort rooting the device and just went back to stock... I imagine more and more apps will detect roots in the future, it will be more hassle.

If you use Magisk root, it has a facility to "hide" root from apps.
I've attached Magisk to this thread. Place in the root of your internal SD and then flash Magisk-v12.0.zip - the other file's use is obvious

Help with rooting Galaxy S7

Hey all,
I tried rooting my Galaxy S7 today with Odin 3.11.1 and I thought it all went fine, it said it passed and that it was successful. However when it starts to boot it gets no further than the boot screen which says "Samsung Galaxy S7" and then "Powered by Android" at the bottom. There isn't an unlocked padlock on the screen either which I thought there was meant to be. Any help would be much appreciated and at this point I am more than happy to just go back to stock firmware and forget rooting even exists.

Nothing is a guarantee when you flash devices with custom stuff and break them
But flashing stock is guaranteed to take you back to stock obviously, so long as it flashes successfully (It will not reverse KNOX 0x1 though, good chance you've tripped KNOX already)
Seems you have reservations about flashing stock, but quite happy to try rooting the phone using an outdated ODIN?
Try downloading a stock firmware from sammobile (make sure to find the right model and android version), extract it and then flash it with odin (assuming that you can still enter download mode). File is quite large to download, but Internet Download Manager (IDM) could speed up the process by 4-5 times. As for rooting, I have an S7 myself and I managed to successfully root it using Odin and chainfire's auto root file. However, I was also stuck in your situation the first time I tried and had to factory reset before trying again. Can't remember the cause though.
The easiest way is using samsung smart-switch.
There is a menue "emergency-recovery" or similar.
Follow the instructions and it will automatically download the actual firmware and flash it.
Good luck
