Way to wipe phone of contacts and sync with Google? - General Questions and Answers

Hello XDA devs,
My client has a mess of contacts in her Android, but her Google contacts are clean. She'd like to wipe all the contacts on her phone, do a one-way sync from Google Contacts, and then start synchronizing with Google Contacts again normally. Any recommended way of doing this?
Thanks!
DJ

[Q] Best way to fully back up before root

So, now that I have a yummy Inspire to play with, I figure I'm going to want to try out a few ROMS, etc. Is there any way to back up the data on my phone?
Thanks!!
"MyBackup Root" is free in the market. It will save pretty much everything. Apps, app data, texts, call logs, dictionary, bookmarks, etc.
Just sync everything with google.

(The only android device I have owned is a rooted NC, so patience please)
When you say to "sync to google", can you clarify? I know I can sync my contacts, mail, and calendar. What else can I sync to google?
Thanks

Sorry. If you go into your google account you can add all of your contacts. When you sign into google all of your contacts will automatically populate with the pictures you had for them. Also all of the apps you downloaded will re download automatically. I find it the best way.

Contact pics not showing up inside sms app

Am I the only one with this problem? And is there a fix?

This happens to me sometimes. I usually just backout of messages, and go back in and it works fine. Hasn't hapened for a few days though.
Happens to me ALL the time...
Yeah from my searching it's been happening to all of us at one point or another. I usually delete my facebook account from the phone and re-add them. Pics come back.
Here is the fix - you probably ran permission fix in CWM. This is one of the results...
Go into Applications - Manage applications
Go to ALL applications tab
Scroll down to Contacts Storage and click it.
Clear its data
Scroll down to Market
Clear data
Open market - accept agreement
Resync your contacts. This only erases the picture cache not your numbers. It gets corrupted when you run permission checks in CWM.
I had this same problem, it wasn't storing the picture right in the SMS app, and other apps like LauncherPro weren't able to pull any of the contact pictures. I also had it not syncing my Facebook picture with my local contact (which I find annoying).
What I did is added the Facebook for HTC Sense account, and let this sync. When I installed the FB app I told it to not sync anything.
Now everything is working great.

Second of all, don't ever save your contacts on your phone, that's what google sync is for. When you start restoring saved contacts and letting google sync run, you're creating a huge mess.
In your case I would clean up the contacts on google, then wipe your phone (not restoring any contacts saved on the phone) so that everything you have on google is what you have on the phone.
I did this a while back, and have been happy ever since.

Absolutely agree with you. After I rooted, i dont know what I did, but after i rooted, all my facebook contacts ended up on my phone. )And no, I didnt tell the facebook app to sync all) I think i added the google account and facebook accounts too fast and then hosed it up when it brought up suggested linked contacts. I just went to Google contacts, cleaned what i didnt want, made some changes to other contacts, cleared contact storage data, and had them all back how i like less than 2 minutes later. and i still had facebook for htc sense setup and it had everybody synced in about 5 minutes. been perfect ever since.

[Q] HTC Sync issues.

Ok, so I'm having a sync problem. I know it has nothing to do with the rom I'm using but after quite a bit of searching I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. (must not be using the right terms)
After a clean flash of Saga 1.0.1 last night I restored my contacts from a backup I made within people. This morning when I got up I had some duplicates & even triples of contacts but not all, kinda weird. I've had this happen in WM on my Tilt2 when I sync'd on multiple pc's but that's not the case here and when it happened then it would be all contacts not random ones. Another odd thing that happened is a couple of received mms's got sent back to the sender. I think it must have something to do with Gmail and/or Htcsense.com
Well when I got to work I sync'd with my pc then cleaned up everything in outlook & wiped contact storage on the phone thinking that I would just resync with the pc and all would be good. Not! When I tried to sync with HTC Sync it will not load the contacts to my phone and Gmail would not add them back either.
Also, being the moron I am, I had also deleted the backup on the sdcard because there were several linked contacts and I wanted to start from a clean slate. The only way I could find to sync back up with the pc was to do a FDR and select manual syncing in the setup. Is there a better way of going about this?
The pc is running 32bit win7 & I'm using outlook 07. Any help will be much appreciated!!

okay this seems REALLY confusing. to clear some things up, what all does your phone sync to (htc, google?, outlook?), and where are your contacts stored that's kinda like your home base for contacts from which everything is synced? Outlook, or google?
also, your google account on your phone, is it the android google account? or do you have a separate exchange server set up?
and yeah, if you try a FDR, let me know what happens with this. that might just be a good way to clean up all the residual stuff...

When I initially got the phone I used HTC Sync to pull office 07 contacts from my work pc. Since then I've been using a vcard backup on my sdcard. I also had google setup to sync with as it also restores apps, wallpaper, etc after flashing. I thought that google would ignore existing contacts, it did for some and not others.
The google account is the gmail account I setup when I got the phone.
The FDR did work and everything is fine now but I want to be sure it doesn't happen again the next time I flash a rom.
Thanks for your help!

Where does google store the info at? When I log into my gmail account on my pc there are no contacts stored. If I'm going to let google be my "home base" I'd like to be able to edit it. At the same time how safe is the data? I have birthdays, anniversaries, addresses and so on in my contacts.
This is my first android phone. It's funny that I had no problem rooting, flashing, adding themes or side loading but the **** that's supposed to be simple is what's f'ing me up.

"People" calendar is missing, how do I get it back?

hello
I was messing with my calendars trying to clean it up and I accidentally deleted the "people" calendar, this is the calendar where I record birthdays and anniversaries for my friends.
The People calendar options is simply not available anymore, how do I get it back? Thank you
not a lot of info as are you rooted etc
if rooted restore a nandroid, or fresh flash of rom, wipe system, and all else
if someone has the apk, you could push it thru adb then change permissions, all thru adb

Perhaps just clearing cache and data in the Apps settings for calendar?
that would be a good first choice
but, unless I misunderstood, I think he lost the whole calendar apk-

I checked the HTC calendar app and it has one named "People"...I'm guessing you'd get it back clearing data.
worth a shot, unless OP already has it sorted--
easier than the options i listed--
Thanks guys for the replies and ideas.
I am simply missing the people calendar option, the calendar app works otherwise fine
My phone is completely stock and no rooted
The problem actually occurred after I cleaned the cach for the calendar app. The calendar list was initially empty and it slowly got filled wth all my google calendar entries , Facebook calendar etc.... Everything came back except the people calendar.

Why are you not syncing with Google servers? Moto Portal is junk, you need to be syncing, so whenever you need to wipe data/factory reset, you'll just re-enter your Google account information and your contacts will re-populate...

What do you use for your email service provider, Yahoo, MSN, Hotmail, other? If you're using something other than Gmail (as was in my case, since my primary email is a Yahoo! account), you need to log in, export contacts, then import to Gmail. Then, remove your Google account from the phone and re-enter...
